Double email messages, erratic Mail behavior, confused

Hi there,
I am getting two of the same emails coming in. For example, if someone sends me an email, I get two of emails (exactly the same, time, same person etc.). Sometimes there are three of them, sometimes there is only one mail copy.
If I open mail for example, it will tell me there are 6 emails, when really there are only three, with a copy of each. So really there are 6, but only 3 original emails.
Sometimes, if I click on Mail, and my inbox will say those 6 emails (for example) and I click on trash, or junk mail, or some other mailbox, (before opening any of those mails) then back to the original inbox it will correct itself. (i.e. 3 mails). Usually not. It is hard to tell if there are copies or not; sometimes, I'll delete one of them and then later, they'll _both_ be gone.
I can't seem to find anything in the settings that make any sense, either that or I do not know the correct language for it.
Thanks for any help,
Keri

Me too. I just created a Mobile Me account the other day, and I'm receiving doubles. None of my other email accounts are though, just my Me account.
Solutions anyone?
* I just realized that after I delete the messages and check the Trash folder, they are not doubled anymore...

When I send an email message, my Mail shows two messages outgoing instead of just one.
What is going on?  Is it possible some "spyware" has crept in?

There is an email address on my website that automatically forwards to my "regular" email address, but this problem predates setting up that website.  My primary email is a bellsouth account (AT&T) which switched to a Yahoo mail-supported service....so based on your comments, perhaps that is why the activity is looking weird.

  • Imap inbox only shows 1 email message until mail.app is quit/restarted

i am having a problem with mac mail that has persisted for months and nobody i talk to has an answer. this started in leopard - same account in panther mail did not do this.
basically i have one particular email account on a well supported university imap server (eg it is a standard imap account, no funny ports, nothing shady about the server). i use mac mail to access the account but when i leave it open for a few minutes suddenly all the emails in the inbox disappear, except one. oddly, the one email message that shows in the inbox seems random - sometimes it is a message from a week ago, sometimes the most recent one, sometimes one from last year.
i have tried changing the imap settings, turning on/off idle mode, etc etc to no avail. the account previously had 1500 messages in the inbox and recently i trashed all but 150. still happening. when i restart mac mail all the messages show up again. it is just unpredictable and annoying because i have several accounts so i usually leave mac mail on all accounts inbox view and then go crazy trying to find an email in that account, only to realize it is this bug again
    any ideas?
    thanks

perhaps this subject line is clearer than my previous post

  • Duplicate email messages in Mail

    Dear Common Wisdom:
    Hi!
Can anyone think of a reason why I would receive duplicate messages in Mail?
I have communicated with my provider and they see only one message.
Thanks in advance for your assistance!
    kostas

Can you figure why this is confusing Mail?
It seems to me that you are using an IMAP account and storing your messages on the server, but you didn't answer my question as to what type of account you had. IMAP accounts let you synchronize your messages between your Mac and the mail server so they each have the same contents. But you say you're getting duplicate messages, even though your mail provider only sees one--that doesn't sound right at all.
Have you tried rebuilding your Mail index for those accounts, and/or repairing permissions? If not, you should do that to see if the problem continues afterward.

  • Email message notifications mail not there

I have 2 email messages in my iCloud account on the MacBook Pro that do not exist. They do not show up on iCloud, my iPhone, my iPad or my iMac. How do I get rid of them?

Click on the link I provided to the Tiger mail forum, if you look under Leopard, there is a Mail forum as well. They are both sub-forums of the OS.
Try deleting the ~>Library>Preferences>com.apple.mail.plist and see if that helps.

  • Email message crashes mail on ipad

I have a email message in my inbox and I cannot delete it.  Every time I click on the message, it crashes Mail.  I've tried clicking on the message and hitting delete.  I've tried clicking edit and deleting it along with other messages.  But when ever the preview of the message come up, Mail crashes.  It deleted off my iPhone just fine since I could choose edit and delete without the preview appearing.

I tried that, but it doesn't delete that email.   When I restart the iPad and open mail, it still crashes mail when I try to delete it.  The email is a spam email and the account is a pop email account that only puts a copy on my iPad.  I've alread deleted the email from my iPhone, my computer and is not on the server anymore.  I just can't delete the local copy on my iPad 2.  I've even tried clicking edit and deleting the message along with the one above and below it in the list.  It still crashes mail.

  • Edit Email Messages in Mail.app

Does anyone know a way to edit an email message already received in mail.app? I found this to be a useful feature of Eudora and even Outlook, but it doesn't seem to be in Mail.app.
Thanks for any help. - M.

Thanks for the replies. But that link does not solve the problem: it just provides workarounds.
I would like to know if there is any way to edit a message that has been received in my mail.app program.
As for any legal issues, I find them to be not very compelling. Although it is true that courts now admit emails into evidence as if they were any other document, that does not suggest that they should not be modifiable. That courts admit such electronic documents into evidence certainly imposes no burden on me, the email receiver, to maintain the email's original format. Moreover, there is nothing improper about making programs or add-ons that facilitate the making of such changes in emails unless and until Congress decides to take up the issue and make it a crime to modify received emails.
Since that has not happened, and is unlikely to in the near future, I would still love it if someone could provide either instructions or some mail.app extension that allows one to edit received emails.
Thanks for any help! - M.

  • After Yosemite, a new email message causes Mail to hang

After upgrading to Yosemite last evening, opening a "compose new message" window in Mail causes Mail to hang (crash?). I'm able to receive email messages, but  I can only send messages by booting my MacBook Air in "Safe" mode. (Opening Mail in "safe" mode does not keep Mail from crashing when I open a "compose new message" window.)
I haven't been able to get far enough to see if trying to "send" a message will make Mail crash. Just opening a "compose new message" window and trying to put the cursor in the address line, subject line, or message area will cause Mail to spin away into infinity.
I do use three Mail add-ins: MailTags, Mail Act-On and the Daylite Mail Assistant; but all of those are the most current versions and their developers claim that they are compatible with Yosemite.

Welcome to Yosemite beta. I havent been able to use Mail since I "upgraded" 4 days ago. Apparently the solution is to wait until Apple figures out what went wrong.

  • Un-hide an email message in Mail iOS7

I inadvertently clicked Hide on an email message--how do I unhide it, as it no longer appears in any list?

I can't believe nobody has answered this.
This is extremely annoying. I have hidden a few emails accidentaly and can't find a way to reverse this and make them visible again. I'm raking my brains here! Help!!!

  • Email messages in Mail won't open

For some reason, I can download email to my intel iMac, but they won't open when I double click on them. I can still open web pages and double click on links in my browser to open them. I also have to right click or control click to open folders in the finder.
    24" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There are more complex procedures with almost guaranteed success, but this generally works for me:
Select in the list of messages one that you want to delete and have been able to read without problems. Command-click on each of your problem emails to add them to the selection. Because it is a multiple selection Mail will not try to open them. Click the delete button, and hopefully that is the last you will see of them.
    Does the computer really roar?

  • Duplicate email messages in Mail.....what could be causing this?

I'll have 2 or 3 or more copies of the same email come in....same # and same time. If I delete one of the extras ALL of them end up in the Trash. So I have to go back to Trash and drag one of them back to the Inbox.
Anyone know what could have Mail doing this all of a sudden? It's been about 10 days this has been happening and I thought that it would go away on its' own.....like it appeared.
    Version - Mail 2.1
This is a recent development. The only thing that I have done with Mail is add another account......a POP account to retrieve messages from my gmail account.

Could you please confirm the number of accounts that you see in Mail > Preferences > Accounts and their type?
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, you may edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you wish to keep private, e.g. you may replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address if you wish; similarly, you may disguise any domain names you don’t want to be revealed. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Snooze email messages in Mail.app

What I am missing is a Mail.app plugin that allows me to snooze messages (just like it is possible with the Mailbox app for iPhone).
    Functionality:
    - I would like to be able to define a snooze period for a message. There should be user-definable presets and the option to exactly specify date and time).
    - Snoozed messages should be moved to a folder "Later".
    - They should be moved back from the "Later" folder to the Inbox when they are due.
    - The extension should work with all email accounts.

Thanks for the replies. But that link does not solve the problem: it just provides workarounds.

  • Invisible email messages in Mail

OK, so I have a client that sends me email on occasion, and after a little research, we realized that her signature makes her emails invisible to Apple's Mail on my two Macs.
I can see her email on the server through webmail, but not on my computer. If Mail has retrieved the email, it will show as "read" in webmail, but not show up at all in Mail... No, it's not in the spam folder, it's not even searchable.
The two Macs that can't see this email, which can be seen in Thunderbird, by the way, are running two different OS's. One running 10.5.8, the other 10.6.8.
I can't keep asking my client to remove her signature every time she sends me an email. Any ideas on how to remedy this?
Oh, she is sending them from her iMac using, you guessed it, Apple Mail.
    Message was edited by: ayola.com

I'm experiencing this too... it seems sporadic
Sending out of the office to a different email client seems to work OK
Sending to others on our own network who also use Macs with Apple Mail seems to cause a problem.
The subject line of the emails I send is OK
The body of the email is invisible
My colleague that received the invisible content was able to view it - by replying to it, the content displayed in the body of the reply email
    Anyone any ideas?
I had so many problems using MS Outlook 2011 that I decided to ditch it
    In favour of Apple Mail
It seemed universally recommended as the best alternative
I like the stability of Apple Mail
Only now I'm now wondering if I made a big mistake

  • Deleting email messages in mail

Please help!  while I'm using my macbook or ipad in mail to highlight an email so I can preview it in the pane, I'd like to be able to go through this process without having the highlight jump to the email above as I review and delete messages.  Is there away for the highlight to keep scrolling to the emails below without randomly jumping to the mail message above.  I have tons of emails to delete daily but I need to review each one before deleting and this would make life a whole lot less frustrating if I could figure this out.  thanks

That's correct - if you delete a POP account, you lose all built-in mailboxes (inbox, sent, drafts). Deleting an IMAP account doesn't lose your inbox mail, since it's on the server, but if your Sent mail is set not to sync, you may lose that.
On My Mac mailboxes are not affected either way.

  • Writing new email messages in Mail (OS X Yosemite)

I have often had need to reference other mail messages whilst writing a new one, and often copy and paste from one to the other, yet this doesn't seem to be possible since upgrading to Yosemite. When I go to reply to a message or write a new one, it brings up a new mail message window, but seems to disable being able to go back into other messages while having the new message open.
Is it possible to go backwards and forwards between different messages, or have both on screen at the same time without having to close, save as draft, go to the other message, copy what you want and then reopen the saved draft?
    Thanks.

That was it. I hadn't realised it had gone to fullscreen, as I was viewing the message window on my Macbook pro screen that I use with a 27" thunderbolt screen and I have it usually almost filling the 13" screen, but not normally completely full screen so I'd not had the problem before.
    Thank you.
