Double files

I note that all my music is included double in iTunes. A study reveals that all files in d:\Music ("My Music" folder) is included, but also all files in my external backup drive L: (l:\music). How can I tell iTunes only to look in D:\Music?
I also like the folder organization imposed when backing up my iPod using Sharepod. It organises the files into \artist\album\00 - track.mp3 based on the tags. I would like to organise my music folder the same way (it doesn't all fit on my iPod Touch).
Is there an easy way to achieve it? I use Tag and Rename, but it doesn't seem to help with folders.

If you already have songs on your iPod, from your computers library, and then you decide to just put the whole library onto your iPod, yes songs will double up. Its an easy fix though, once you get the whole library of songs onto your iPod, click on your iPod in the left panel of iTunes, and it will bring up what all is on your iPod. You can go through from top to bottom deleting all of your doubles by clicking on the song and hitting delete. It is time consuming, but it gets the job done!

Double file extensions keep showing up when saving a file in Illustrator CS3???

I just installed the CS3 suite and when I am saving files in illustrator I keep getting double file extensions. For example if I save a file named "filename" as a .eps file it shows up in the save window with filename.eps.eps Also, if I click through the possible file types to save it keeps adding them one after the other so if I click. say pdf eps and ai the file in the "Save As:" window looks like this " filename.pdf.eps.ai.ai" Any ideas why this is happening? I keep having to mouse click in the "Save As:" box and delete the extra extension. This is really annoying!!

I've seen extra periods (.) and extra extensions.
then you and Dave have the same conflict with a third party software, corrupt font, corrupt preference or the like because it is not happening o my Mac Pro and I have the same model Mac as you do and I am working fine in 10.5.1 and only problem I have had with AI CS 3 is when I tried to place a 3D CAD file with the extension .dxf which is not really supported.
I have not seen this even once. Would you like to see screen shots, it honestly is not a 10.5.1 or Illustrator issue on its own. This has to be user specific.

Find & delete double files

How can I quick find double files, selected them and than delete them on my hard disk.
Problem: in my Itunes music map, I have stored 40GB of, and almost every file is double in several maps. Each musician has is on map.

Final cut pro doubling files

final cut pro has been basically doubling all of my files. One was the original file straight from the camera and another was a final cut event. if i delete the one from the camera will it effect the final cut event?

Luis, not sure which browser screen you're requesting. The only place I can find the folders is as FC Events.
That folder is organized into sub folders:
Name of Project
Backups
Original Media
Render Files

Yes, I was asking about something else; not looking for stuff in the Finder, but inside FCP X - see the image below, and note the red rectangles. My point was that either changing the pop-up menu in the left red rectangle to something other than "All clips", or entering some text in the text box (red rectangle on the right), even a space, filters the displayed content, and can make clips "disappear" - they are still there, but are not displayed in the "browser".

I am seeing double...double files

Hello,
I can't figurer out what to do. My remote site and my local
site are generating doubles of folders in different levels of my
site. I am getting so confused I can hardly handle it. I have
inclosed a link to what my dreamweaver files window looks like. You
will notice two css folders, 2 image folders, etc. My styles are
screwy and I don't know what to do. I think it is a simple
solutioon to do with dealing with the unnamed folder at the top of
my remote site.
Please take a look and give me a hint. It maka me cwazy.
I'm going to go and drink some toilet water.

Did you redefine your site somewhere along the way? You have
a site within
a site, so to speak. What is the folder that is called
francistannahill.com? The whole site is in there and also
some of the
folder are outside also.
Looks to me like the root is supposed to be the
francistannahill.com folder.
You can put that under the Host Directory in the remote site
definition so
everything FTPs to the correct level.

Does raid 0 double file access in a MP?

I am thinking of a MP (Quad 2.66 or 2.94) set up with dual drive striping or, the iMac i7. I know both have the same processor (Xeon has a slight edge) but, will there be a big difference with the striping so I should go the distance and get the MP instead?
Any one with knowledge if the striping will double (probably 2- 2TB drives in the MP (Hitachi), vs. the 1 - 2TB in the iMac) file access of photo processing an advantage with the MP?

All one can say is that in a perfect striped RAID using identical drives the read/write speeds are roughly double for two drives compared to the single drive.
However, the advantage declines as the RAID array becomes filled. The more files on the array the slower it becomes losing most of its edge over a single drive. Also a striped RAID is vulnerable to drive failure. If one drive fails then all the data on the RAID are lost and unrecoverable.
In the vast majority of home systems there's little justification for using RAIDs. Striped RAIDs are used mainly in enterprise installations where large amounts of fast server storage is needed and where mirrored RAIDs are used to provide data redundancy and backup.

RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. Quicktime doubles file size - Why?

In Quicktime Pro I open up a dv video file that is one hour, 12 GB. I select Save As and it tells me that to save the file as an .mov will take 24 GB.
Q1: Why is this the case?
Q2: My properties window lists a video track, a sound track, and a track that appears to be the original DV file. Why the redundancy?
Q3: Can I reduce the file size without exporting or using the Save as Reference Movie option?

To some extent it is a numbers game. In an MOV file the DV audio and DV video are counted separately and added together in both the "Inspector" window and the Finder "Info" window. In the DV file container the "Inspector" window still doubles the file size but the Finder "Info" window only counts a single DV stream. If it Bothers you, either do your trimming in MPEG Streamclip (free) or, if you've already saved some files in MOV containers, then open them in MPEG Streamclip and use the "Save As..." option to re-save them but select the "DV" file container this time. When done, compare the DV file with the MOV file using the Finder "Info" window.

Quicktime save doubles file size!

I'm trying to archive boxloads of HI8 tape to DVD. The imported size of the iMovie imported 2 hour tape is almost 25 gb. I figured, if I used QTPro to cut and paste video into roughly 6 segments, each would easily fit on a SL DVD. I cut all but 20 mins of video and pasted into new movie, approximating that the new file would be roughly 4+ gb. When I saved it, it was double that, almost 9gb!! As a test, I chose SAVE AS on the original 25gb videot, the SAVE AS window told me that the new SAVE AS file would be 50gb!! I'm new to all this, so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong! Any help on this, or other advice on the best way to convert these tapes to DVD would be appreciated!

Making a .zip doubles files when Windows opens it

So I just found out that when I make a .zip using the 'compress x items" service and then someone uses winzip to open the file, it duplicates them and creates two folders - one of which is full of duplicate non-files. What's going on here and how can I fix this so that what I see when I unzip the file is what PC users see?

actually I don't know. Someone told me that the second folder was called "meta [something]" and was filled with what looked like duplicates but were unreadable. I think I read somewhere when looking into this that OS X makes this meta information when compressing files that contain icons and whatnot.
BUT, I tried that zip program and it seemed to work, but I haven't been able to check it yet. Also the file size was about 5 megs larger (which isn't that big of a deal, but I thought interesting to note).

How to delete the doubled file after exporting through iTunes?

When I exported an iMovie project from the iPad to Mac via iTunes, it created another file about the size of the movie project (about 5GB in my case).
Now that I exported the project, I want to keep the movie on the iPad but free that extra 5GB used to prepare the file for export. How do I do that?

Just delete the project in the iTunes/Apps/Sharing pane.
Once you have saved the file off, you can delete it from the Sharing Pane.
IMovie uses an internal area to save the project it edits, so the project in the sharing pane is a duplicate as you say.
You can only delete this file in iTunes though.

Double file sizes due to 1.4 mb album artwork!!!

So let's say I have a 4.5 mb song and 1.4 mb album artwork in JPEG format. I add that artwork to my song and the file size should be 5.9 mb, no?
Well, I am currently getting exactly 9 mb files just because I added the artwork.
What's going on here? Is iTunes converting the image to some ridiculous proprietary format or is that just the way it is?

On the iPod, you would not be able to tell the difference between a 75kb and a 1.4MB album art.
Besides, that is 1.4MB for EACH song.
The file is 1800x1800
The iPod screen is only 320x240 so right off the bat, you have 3,163,200 more pixels than you can use.
iTunes downloaded artwork is only 600x600.
But hey, if that's what you want, have at it.

How to detect and delete double files like for iPhoto

I have a high number of double photos in iPhoto and would like to know a possibility to detect and delete the doubled ones

Are you looking for an option for you Mac/iLife version of iPhoto or the iPhone/iPad version of iPhoto for iOS? Since the pictures in iPhoto for iOS are from the built-in camera or synced with iPhoto on your Mac, I would guess you should look for a utility like that in the iPhoto of iLife forum.

I've been looking into this quite for a while... but couldn't find a suitable solution
_in short:_ 1 miniMac, 3 (relevant) User Accounts using iTunes, 2 of it with iPods to synch!
goals:
- have the songs only *one time on the drive*
- available in all accounts (using iTunes) - independent import seams a must, but that's no problem
- *easy import* for the 2nd and 3rd account to (out of one place not song by song)
- *independent rating* for the songs
any real WORKING solutions ?

The only real way to do this would do a home share to one computer then view all duplicates, delete the duplicates then move them to the desired location. If you dont want to do it this way then a one by one transfer would be called for.

Project File Size Nearly Doubled?

Hi, I've been exporting video for a good year and a half in Premiere Elements 11 using the following method.
Publish & Share -> Computer -> MPEG -> Presets HD 720p 30
My file size has normally been quite reasonable every time I exported a video.
However, today after a good 3-4month Hiatus from making videos, I created another video (very similar to my previous made ones) and tried to export it. I realized that the file size is about double that of all of my other videos around the same length.
I also went back to an old saved project that I did and it's also showing a doubled file size (2g now), despite the previous file that was exported from this project saying 1.3gb.
I don't recall editing anything to the bitrate at all either so I am quite confused as to what is going on.
Can anyone help me?

Yes, I am looking at an older project to see if it was just the new video I was using in my newer project that was increasing the size. It seems this is not the case.
a. I'm not sure where to locate the bitrate of all of the video on the time line. If you are talking about the original video and not the edited versions, the properties state that the bit rate for each video is about 17200kbps. I do have photos as well as video on the timeline.
Frame Size: 1920x1080
Frame Rate: 29.97
File Size: 2.1gb
b. No I am not customizing the preset at all.
c. File Size: 2043.39 Duration: 17Min 49sec
d. I am finding the export dialog and the newly exported file are one in the same. Initially I was reading the exported file size by looking at the properties of the file.

My files is double in itunes.

How can I remove all the double files in Itunes? In some strange way, all my files is double, and it is double on my hardrive in Itunes folder. The songs are stored like this in the folder: fame.m4a and fame1.m4a. It is too much work to delete them one by one.

Using Windows, do an Advanced Search for the Name 1 in the folder where you have stored your iTunes Library. The results will give you a list of the duplicate files which you can then delete in one go. You may then have to rebuild your iTunes library by deleting all current content (making sure you choose not to remove the files from your computer) and then add the iTunes folder again.
