Double Libraries

I recently copied over my whole music library from my old PC to my new Macbook Pro. Importing the songs from files into iTunes, iTunes makes another copy of my music. Is it necessary to have double of everything? It does take up a needless amount of hard disk space...

You can tell iTunes to show Duplicates and then you can delete the excess - or for any future stuff you can go to iTunes prefs-Advanced and turn off the copy feature. Usually when adding new tunes it is best to leave the copy feature enabled then iTunes will copy the tune and you can delete the original.

  • IPhoto Yosemite Double photo libraries

    Hi there,
In the apple support article concerning the advanced settings within iPhoto '11 Apple explaines: "if you uncheck this marker (the marker in front of the option "Import") iPhoto will use threads to these files"
I tried this but it seems not to be working.
I have a photo library of app 80 G filled with both jpeg and NEF files. Before importing my photo's I unchecked the marker for importing photo's, so it is to be expected that iPhoto uses threads to the original files. But to my surprise the iPhoto Librbary is approx 22 G and my Aperture library is approx 55 G. It seems to me that I now have double libraries. (the original and the iPhoto/Aperture).
Anyone know how to solve this?
Furthermore, why is my Aperture library growing when importing files into iPhoto?
I really hope you can help me figure this out.

It is simple if you do not work at making it complex
Be sure you have the latest version of iPhoto and of Aperture  - since  you do not tell us what OS you have we can not help here - for Yosemite it is iPhoto 9.6 and Aperture 3.6
Create a new library using either program - if you are sure that you have all of you photos outside of the existing library then you can trash it - although I o=wouodl probably not empty the trash until you complete your imports and have at least one good backup
Be sure that imported items are being copied to the library (In iPhoto the preference to copy imported items to the iPhoto library is chekcked)
import your RAW photo  into either program and delete the source photos - do NOT import multiple copies of he same photo (like a RAW and a JPEG for example - only the RAW or if there is no RAW then only the JPEG)
Once you have done this you can access all photos using either program - all photos will have the original safely in the library and a preview JPEG and a thumbnail
I have no idea what you have been doing but your descriptions above make no sense at all and your conclusions are incorrect
It is very simple and if you follow the simple steps outlined above you will have no problems
As a side note there is never any reason to mucking around inside of either an iPhoto library or an aperture library - it is not designed for you to use - it is only designed for the SQLite database applications (iPhoto and aperture) to access - stay out of it - you can only mess things up by mucking around inside the library

  • Will there be problems if I move referenced iphoto pics in aperture 3

If haven't imported my pictures from iphoto because I want to keep it around and don't want to have double libraries.
But what if I move or delete pics in aperture - which will be my main editor? Will they move in iphoto as well? I'm thinking this may cause problems in the long run.
Or am I just being paranoid?
    Thanks
    Frank

I'm sorry your question isn't clear.
If haven't imported my pictures from iphoto because I want to keep it around and don't want to have double libraries.
So: Guessing at what you're asking...
If you have referenced files in iPhoto and Aperture, then unless you deliberately trash the Masters, deleting the files from Aperture will not affect iPhoto, or vice versa.

    TD

  • Missing iphoto pics after downloading photos from iphone

I downloaded photos from iphone to iphoto and now the only photos that appear in the iphoto library are the ones I just downloaded from the iphone, not any of the earlier ones. There is only one iphoto library to open.  I was able to get all of the earlier photos back by option clicking the library but now the ones from iphoto are missing, despite there only being one iphoto library to open.  How do I unite them?

This is likely the case.  The only time I see double libraries is when I "Show package contents".  Then there is a "library" (which has all the pics) and a library.photo and a library6.photo.  Both look exactly the same as the real photo library but neither can be opened.
I can retake the pictures - it's only 20 or so now and recent too - I just wish I knew what had happened so that it wouldn't happen again!
Thanks for all of the help!

  • ITunes block my iMac

I have the latest version of iTunes with Mountain Lion. If I'm working on my play lists: importing, changing informations, so on, iTunes block my iMac. I saved play  lists, however, importing them it losses some files or doubling libraries one in other one.

How much free space on the iMac disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
My actions are carried out 30 seconds later,as the computer is extremely slow.
Not enough free space can cause the problems you are describing.
I tried to reinstall Lion, iTunes several times but nothing is there ...
If your Mac won't boot to the Desktop, use Lion Recovery

  • Do two libraries double the number of photos?

If you have two libraries with each having some photos that are the same, have the number of photos doubled for the ones that are the same on the hard drive?
As I created each library and imported photos into each, a few photos were the same in each library.
Please do not raise the issue of merging libraries which I know how to do, nor the issue of having imported the same photo into each library for reasons of my own.
    Thank you for your help.
    Vernon

Thank you for your immediate response and answer to my question. I had assumed that there would be two copies of each of the photos that were the same in each library and you did answer that question.  However,  I really did not want any mention of the issues which I requested not be addressed.
    Thanks again.

  • Different iTunes Libraries on same comp- will it double space taken up?

    Hey all,
Quick question- I have my iTunes Library with a bunch of songs, and my wife's iTunes library on our iMac.
My Library is full of songs that she would like to add to her Library.
Both libraries are on the same User (Me), and when I want to open hers I simply hold down 'option' and choose her Library from there.
My setup from Finder looks like this: Finder > My User folder > Music > iTunes (my Library) and also Wife's Library
My question: If I move songs from my iTunes folder to her iTunes folder within this Finder window, so she can have access to the same music, will it double the space taken up on the HD, or will it just reference my iTunes folder?
Thanks in advance for the tips!

missed a very important step necessary to achieve this, in the summary tab in iTunes there is a check box... "show only synced items".. if you uncheck that box then unsynced items will will appear on the appleTV menus and when you click on them they will be streamed... this gives you the sync and stream from the same library part of what the OP wants.
the other part of the puzzle is to let items inside and outside of the iTunes Folder exist in the iTunes library... the library is file that contains all the files that you see in itunes... files don't need to be in the iTunes folder to be in the itunes library though..
the trick here is that when you drag the files from your external (the ones you don't want on your computer) and into iTunes... press option as you drag and the files will be added to the iTunes library (a reference/path to them really) but the files will not be copied to the iTunes folder... when iTunes looks for that file (to play it directly or to stream or sync to appleTV) it looks at the reference and says.. hey i can get this file here (on your external) and goes and fetches it.
on a PC you press SHIFT as you drag into iTunes so the item(s) don't get copied to the iTunes folder.. no OPTION key on PCs.

  • How does one merge existing IPhoto 11 Libraries on an External HD?

I have an IPhoto 11 Library on my IMAC.  I have multiple IPhoto Libraries on my external HD.  I use Snow Leopard 10.6.8, IPhoto 11 (v. 9.2.3).
I am not sure how I got them, other than Apple at one point backed up all my files onto my external Seagate HD in order to completely wipe out and do the most extensive reinstall they could due to a malfunction of Time Machine located on a Lacie External HD.
In addition, I must have backed up my IPhoto Library onto my Seagate HD.
My question was how to merge two or more libraries located on my Seagate HD, backup my IPhoto Library onto the Seagate, and eliminating duplicates.
I think I have found my answer after 3 days of searching YouTube, Apple Discussions, Books, google.
It may be long and convoluted but I think I am doing nothing wrong.  I wish comments as to improvement or flaws in my procedure.
From what I can glean, IPhoto does not permit merging of multiple libraries, that external programs such as IPhoto Library Manager and IPhoto Duplicate Annihilator are what most recommended.  In addition, Aperture vs. Lightroom were discussed.
My solution using just the external HD's and IMAC for transferring photos in their original format (RAW, Jpeg, etc) from my IMAC to an individual IPhoto Library on my Seagate HD.
    1.  Locate proper IPhoto library, the one on my IMAC by holding the ALT/Option key then depressing and holding the IPhoto Application key located on the Dock until a window pops open, slide my mouse to the window to the line that says, "Open" and releasing only the mouse key while still depressing the ALT/Option key. This will open a window which will permit me to select from the different IPhoto Libraries.  If some bear the same name, a look at the pathway on the bottom of the window will show which are on the Seagate HD.
    2.  Click on the library desired to be opened, in this case, the IMAC IPhoto Library.  This will open IPhoto.
    3.  Select an image, from the Events, Open that image, Open the Info pain (lower right) noting name of file and file size, example CRW_0555  6.5mb a Cannon Raw file.  Click on "Edit" which will permit editing.
Hover over image of photo and Right Click with Mouse, window will open, slide cursor down to "Duplicate" the photo and Left click.  A duplicate RAW file will be made.
    4.  Click on Info to close out the Edit mode, Click on the Date Arrow (Upper left of IPhoto window) to get back to the name of the event.
    5.  Highlight the selected photo or photos, File > Export, select "Original", not the Jpeg that automatically appears.
    6.  Click Export.  New window will appear, in my case telling me it will go to Pictures.  Move cursor to window and select via arrow, Desktop to export to.  The duplicate RAW file will now appear on your Desktop.
    7.  Close IMac IPhoto Library.
    8.  Follow steps 1 & 2 above to Open the desired Library on the Seagate External HD.
    9.  Drag the RAW desktop Image into IPhoto Library, either into Events or Last Import.
    10. Close IPhoto Library.
    11. Reopen IPhoto Library by clicking on the IPhoto App located on the Dock.  The last library opened, will now be the default, which was the Seagate External IPhoto Library, will open.  Click on the RAW image you imported from the Desktop, verify through Info that the Image name and file size and type are exactly the same, in my case, CRW_0555  6.5mb.
    12. Drag Image on the DeskTop into the Trash. (Empty at will).
    13.  You have now taken a duplicated Image or group of selected duplicated images which you created, which you have highlighted in IPhoto on your IMac, dragged them to your Desktop, switched libraries to a selected library on your External HD. and transferred an exact copy into that external IPhoto Library.
Utilizing this basic technique, you can now do any of the following.
Backup your entire IMac Library onto an External HD into a library of the same name.
Take one or more selected images, highlighting each image in an particular Event on your IMAC HD.
Transferring an exact copy of those Images into any particular IPhoto Library on your External HD.
Transfer one image in an external  HD IPhoto Library-1 into another external HD IPhoto Library-2 on the same HD (by simply opening up  HD IPhoto Library-1, selecting photo, duplicating photo, Exporting Photo to Desktop, Closing IPhoto, Switching Libraries to IPhoto Library-2, opening that Library, dragging Desktop photo into IPhoto Library-2.
You can identify all IPhoto Libraries on all drives and rename them as follows.
    1. Open Finder and locate IPhoto Library on the MAC HD under "Pictures", looking for the IPhoto Library Icon in the My Picture Folder (at least in my case).  It is simple to find, as it is brightly orange colored and as a description it states, "IPhoto Library"  not to be confused with the similar Icon which has a camera in front of it, identifying it as an Application.
    2. Double click on the IPhoto Library name and rename it.  I named mine "IPhoto Library IMAC-1"
    3. In Finder click onto Macintosh HD.  In the Search field, type in "IPhoto Library".  All of your IPhoto Libraries will show up that are on your IMac and on any currently connected HD's.
    4. I renamed them, example, IPhoto Library Seagate 3TB 1, IPhoto Library Seagate 3TB 2, IPhoto Library Seagate 3TB 3, IPhoto Library Lacie, IPhoto IMAC-1.
Items like Library6.IPhoto of only 4Kb (when one opens "Get Info" in the finder, is listed as an "IPhoto Library" "Kind" of file type.
When opened, it appears to contain full size images in a full size library, so perhaps this represents the icon pointing to the "Last import".
Can anyone tell me what that represents?  I will not rename nor delete that.
By keeping the names of the IPhoto Libraries, consistent, descriptive of type of drive and the name of the Library you have assigned to it, then simply opening Finder and searching for "IPhoto Library" and looking for the colored icons, one can see, at a glance where each is located (by looking at the bottom of the Finder window for the path which will tell what drive it is located and the pathway to reach it).  One will see each of their names.
This saves me from purchasing 3rd party programs to locate duplicates, to merge and establish and rename libraries.  This probably will work well if I do no more than a batch of 50 pictures at a time.
It would appear that I will only do this massive procedure one time, making one library on my External HD, eliminating all of the duplicates as long as I let them have the same first part of the name, i.e., CRW_0580, and simply making a search.  They should all pop up in my search.  I can add on additional suffix names such as CRW_0580edit1, or pano, etc.
Does anyone see anything flawed in my above procedure?
Is there an economical easier way?
I am not sure I want to purchase Aperture, which apparently is overdue for an upgrade.  I may want to wait.  I may decide on Lightroom, my Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 provides for far better editing capability than IPhoto, at least in terms of exposure corrections.
Pros as I see it to my method -
Inexpensive $$$, no extra cost for extra programs
Full manual control as to what gets transferred, picture by picture
    Cons
Seems quite timeconsuming for a first runthrough of the 3,000 photos, both individual and edited.
May have unforeseen consequences that I am not aware of.
Advice is appreciated.  Though I have had this machine for several years, I am still trying to learn and have limited understanding.  I find written instructions hard to understand and follow, escpecially not understanding the differences between different what I believe to be synonymous terms.  I find YouTube videos informative but now answering all of my questions.

The duplication is unnecessary. Exporting creates a duplicate of the file. So now you'll have a duplicate of a duplicate. Exporting is not "working on" a file.
No it's not merging, it's exporting from one to the Finder and into another. No matter what lose something. If you export the Original you leave behind all the work you've done in iPhoto. If you export anything else, you lose the non-destructive editing and the ability to revert to the original. With merging you preserve that work. Yes, you can trash the old Library when you have completed the manoevre but no it's not the same thing as merging.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue. But in brief:
Current gets you the iPhoto Preview, used for sharing via media browsers. It's a jpg, medium quality missing metadata. Original gets the file you imported, unchanged and then you can export different version of the current version at different qualities. If you choose to export anything except the Original you do not get a Raw. There's no such thing as an "edited Raw", and you lose the connection between the original and the exported version. That means you've taken a non-destructive workflow and turned it into a destructive one.
The Tiff will certainly be higher qulaity and less likely to suffer generational loss in future editing but the file sizes are vast, often more than 10 times the size of the jpeg.
Put it this way, it would be cheaper to buy Library Manager than the disk you'll need to contain all the Tiffs. Unless you plan on a lot of editing, I'd go for a high quality jpeg as a reasonable compromise.
    To be clear:
So, I guess my new question is, how can I edit the Raw image and keep it in a RAW format that IPhoto recognizes so that I can reprocess without any loss at a future time, or is it that once you edit a RAW image, then it is no longer a RAW image?
Once you edit a Raw it can no longer be a Raw. End of.

  • Double / Triple copies of loops in loop browser.

This is probably really common occurance, but I haven't been able to find a thread on it here.
I have multiple copies of certain, but not all loops listed in the loop browser, when i use the loop browser search function.
If I just list the loops by category, or by instrument, they appear singularly. However, if I search for a loop, i get multiple copies listed.
    Reindexing does not help.
    Note:
I have checked the loop locations:
    / home / library / audio / apple loops /user loops/ (loop folder)
    and
/ home library / audio / apple loops / user loops / single files /
    and
    / root library / audio / apple loops / single files /
There is only one copy of the loops in question among all of those locations.
    Any ideas?

    I would do the following:
Trash the content of home/library/audio/apple loops index/ and the same in the root library. Restart the computer and then manually drag and drop your apple loops folders (default locations are in root and home libraries, audio folders) on the loops area in Logic arrange window. Perhaps this helps??? And if it doesn't, it means you have your loops doubled, I belive...

  • Can't find (and possibly don't have) the -lglut -lGLU -lGL libraries... or at least when I try to compile a program, it returns with that error.  Any ideas (I really need to get this popgen program running on Lion)? Thx!

    Hi all,
I'm trying to compile a population genetic software program onto my Mac Lion.  It was originally compiled to Tiger and worked beautifully.  But now I'm getting an error  'library not found for -lglut', and now I'm trying to figure out how to download the library. I've installed the command line code for Xcode, and am thinking I possibly missed installing the libraries.  I could be very wrong here... all I know is that I'm no longer near the people I would ask to help me with this so I'm asking you!  Thanks in advance for any help!  I guess my questions are: 1) where can I download the glut (potentially OpenGL) libraries (if I don't have them already)? And 2) once downloaded, how do I install it so the makefile will compile my program (in terminal, not Xcode)? Cheers,
    C

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • After Aperture 3 update, I can't access old libraries. It tells me to close and relaunch but when I do this it just opens again on the same library. Please help!

I have just downloaded the latest iOS update for my computer, and then I was unable to use Aperture until I upgraded its software also. I did this, and it seemed to work fine on relaunch with new version - the last library I had open worked fine. BUT yesterday I tried to open a different library and I got a message saying
"the selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch"
I click the relaunch button and it relaunches but it just opens on the same library again. I don't know how to make it relaunch properly with the different library. Please help!! Thanks

TThe message is a bit deceptive the old libraries need to be upgraded before they can be used. To upgrade quit Aperture select one of the old libraries with the Finder and double click it. This will open Aperture on that library and ask if you want to upgrade it.
WWhile the procedure is safe it is always a good idea to have a backup of the libraries before doing this.

  • How to Share music between two libraries / Apple ID's?

So my boyfriend and I have moved in together and will soon be utilizing the same computer. I have an Apple ID and music library, he has an Apple ID and music library. I would like to create a separate login to the computer so we can still keep our separate ID's / libraries for syncing purposes (making sure we each have our own Calendars, Contacts, Photos, etc...) but would like to Share music with one another and be able to add it to our iPhone's without having to buy or download it twice.
    A couple of things below
What's the easiest way to transfer all of my current information to his computer? External hard drive?
What's the easiest way to share music and / or apps while keeping individual Apple ID's?
Will the Home Sharing option work here?
OR, will we have to create a new Apple ID, transfer our information to that new ID, and create two separate libraries off of that?
Any and all advice is appreciated. Trying to make this as easy and painless as possible

Thanks so much identd! So with that first option, we won't have to double download the music correct? I just want to make sure it's not taking up too much space on our computer either. It will always be updated b/c the iTunes library folder's will be public now correct?

  • "Volume not found" I have 3 iphoto_libraries stored in a external disk, while the actual files are in other external disk. Ive moved together iphotolibraries and files but: HOW CAN I TELL THE LIBRARIES WHERE TO FIND THEM NOW?

I have three iphoto_libraries stored in a external disk PASSPORT (one for each trip imovie Im making -Ive managed this way the libraries so to not confuse the trips) while the actual files are in OTHER external disk LACIE. And everything was fine: imovie find each library, could work with it, or iphoto could edit the files.
But one day everything crashed at the same time: i opened iphoto to find 3 different scenarios:
    1) iphoto_library GREECE was there, but not the albums i prepared. no events. when double click in any of them: "Volume not found"
    2) iphoto_library ITALY was there, and the albums i prepared too, but empty.
in both cases I can only see the photos in 'photos'  because 'events'  shows some events with photo preview and some with no preview, just some kind of preset clipart palm tree, but if i enter the event, photos are there but again: when double click in any item: "Volume not found"
    3)  iphoto_library ISRAEL was there, the albums too, when double click in any of them: all OK
The 3 libraries was managed the same way. Meaning: Ive imported photos to iphoto from external disk LACIE in a iphotolibrary stored in another external disk PASSPORT. Also: I don't have unchecked the option "copy to file" or something like that. photos where moved, not copied. Also i have all the movie_libraries in the PASSPORT as well. What happened??
Solution? Nothing yet. Ive moved now all the photo folders from LACIE together in PASSPORT with the iphotolibraries but problem persist:
HOW CAN I TELL THE LIBRARIES WHERE TO LOOK FOR THE VOLUMES NOW?
"Volumes" are the original files aren't them?
Please help. this is so annoying to try and find in the forum, to tricky to explain
    I have a Macbook pro retina Yosemite 10.10.1 / iphoto 9.6 (910-29)/ iMovie 10.0.6
    THANK YOU
    Vicky

The 3 libraries was managed the same way. Meaning: Ive imported photos to iphoto from external disk LACIE in a iphotolibrary stored in another external disk PASSPORT.
This is not clear, especially when you say
I don't have unchecked the option "copy to file" or something like that. photos where moved, not copied.
Especially as the message you're getting is typical of a library where the ' option "copy to file" or something like that' is unchecked.
    So it's a simple question:
Are you these Managed or Referenced Libraries?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • HELP!! I had two libraries in iPhoto, Photos imported the wrong one, and now I have lost 10,000  photos. How can I get them back??

I originally had two libraries in iPhoto, my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why. Anyway, I updated to OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3 with the new 'photos' app. It asked me to choose one of the libraries and evidently I assume I must have chosen the wrong one. It only imported 322 random photos, not the 10,000+ we had in iPhoto. I can no longer find these photos or the other library anywhere, it appears to have been deleted. I have tried 'alt' clicking the icon which used to open a 'choose library' box, but this no longer works in photos or iPhoto. I have no idea where it has gone and it contains precious memories over the years including the birth of our children. Can someone please help???

Where is your iPhoto library stored?
my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why.
Since you are sharing it between two Macs, is the library on an external drive or a NAS, or another remotely mounted volume?
If the library is not on a directly connected disk, formatted MacOS Extended, move the original iPhoto Library to a directly connected, correctly disk.
And the try first the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on that library.  Repair the permissions, and repair the database in iPhoto.  Then try to migrate again to Photos.
To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto Library to launch the iPhoto Library First Aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
The select "Repair Permissions". And then repeat, but select "Repair Database"
But make a current backup of your iPhoto Library before you try this.
