Double space being taken up on ipod

So when I'm syncing my ipod and it has the bar at the bottom saying xxx music xxx apps xxx movies and so on. There is this "Other" block that's taking up 1.5gb of my space but all I have on my I pod is about 1gb of music. So I am wondering what this mystery "other" stuff is and how do I get rid of it so I can have my space back? Any incite to this would be appreciated.

'other' is the section for firmware, contacts, emails, album art, notes.
however, unless you have LOADS of emails, then the 1.5gb is not correct. This problem is generally caused by corruption, and can easily be fixed by a restore.

  • Ipod Corrupted? No iPod in iTunes? Space being taken up on iPod when empty?

I have a black 80gb iPod classic, I'm pretty sure it's the newest generation. I've had it for about a year & use it constantly, & besides a few common errors it's always worked fine. Before I had my 80gb I had a 2gb iPod nano for 2 years & it worked fine also. The other day I was listening to it & turned it off for about an hour. When I turned it back on all my music, videos, and the one game I purchased were deleted. Default games still worked, clocks I had set up were still there, & every other default thing was still there; the thing is, 14 gb was being used & that's how much space I using before. I get home & plug it into iTunes & it says "The iPod 'Matt's iPod' is corrupt." It said nothing about how to fix it, but I thought of restoring it since something similar had happened to my nano & it was fixed by restoring it. Yet, when I clicked on my iPod, the screen said my corrupt & the normal screen with Update,Restore, memory used by iPod, picture of my iPod, etc. was gone. I close iTunes, take out my iPod & try again, this time my iPod's not even in iTunes. I searched Yahoo! Answers & other sites like that, the Apple Support site, everything & tried everything: tried updating my USB but it's updated as can be & Windows recognizes my iPod like normal, tried different versions of iTunes with no luck, tried searching my iPod (& iTunes) for viruses & problems, disk mode, dll's, even tried formating my iPod. So as far as I can tell, my iPod is working fine since it turns on & I can go through everything normally, but for some reason it can't be detected in iTunes.
My iPod has also been fully charged the whole time.
Try to help based on that info, the more I figure about what's wrong out, I'll update.

Not certain from your post if you have tried changing the drive letter of your ipod.
Try resetting the ipod, or putting it into disk mode before connecting it. If that does not make itunes recognize it, then you may need to change the drive letter of your ipod.

If you can't see the ipod in disk management, before you connect the ipod, open itunes, select edit/preferences. This will make itunes busy. Then connect the ipod.

  • HELP: 1.3 GB of space being taken by "video" files.  How do I free it up?

    Hi,
When backing up my iPhone 3G I noticed that the usage chart shows 1.3GB of space on the phone being taken up by VIDEO. But when synching and backing up ALL of the video files listed on the iPhone's video tab are unchecked. If the video files are unchecked and and I have no movies loaded how do I reclaim this 1.3GB of space on my iPhone?
Running 3.0 firmware and latest iTunes.

Yes, if you uncheck all podcasts and sync, all video and audio podcasts should be removed. I'm not sure what else could be using that space. If you go back to iTunes and connect your iPhone, click on the capacity bar and it will toggle from MBs used to minutes of play to number of items. At least you will know how may video items there are. You might have to do a restore to purge whatever this is.

  • HUGE amount of yellow "Other" space being taken up on iPhone 4S. Please help!

I looked around the forum for a solution of the huge amount of yellow "other" space that is being eaten up on my iPhone 4S. Even after a restore, the yellow "other" space is taking up 7.1 GB of space on my phone, up from 6.5 which is what it was before the restore. What is going on? Usually I just erase some texts (I send a lot of pics to my hubby and mom,) erase some voicemails and it drops down to around 1 GB. But I've noticed since iOS 6, that hasn't worked. 7.1 GB is ridiculous. Is there ANY way at all to get rid of it without having to erase absolutely everything about my phone and start over from scratch, including downloading 40 apps all over again?
This seems to be a problem a lot of people have been having over the past few years, why has it never been addressed? There needs to be some sort of utility or something that cleans things up if they have problems with junk not getting deleted or corrupted files sticking around.

Ok, so I appreciate the suggestion that it may be a corrupted file. But have you noticed that I am not the only person having this problem? Actually look. It is a valid problem, and I'm not the only one having it. So asking for Apple to fix it really isn't wrong.

Obviously the problem is not new. And it isn't huge, but it is inconvenient and annoying. How are files getting corrupt so frequently that they are taking up 8 GB of space? There has to be a cause. And the fact that before iOS 6 happened, all I had to do was delete text messages and that would immediately fix it. Why has that changed?
Also, it's a crime to say the word Google? Sorry it offends you, that's what I used to search.

    OTHER
Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    Yo can also try:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Why is there such a big block of space being taken up by backups on my computer's hard drive?

I'm about to leave for college, and I've gotten pretty much everything set up on my 13 inch MBP. I recently opened 'About This Mac' and went to storage to view how my storage was being used. I noticed the wierdest thing; that is, that I have a supposed 73 GB of 'Backups' on my MBP. I don't recall ever backing anything up, and I went through and deleted all mobile backups. I've also noticed that I have actually 27 GB of music and it says I only have 4 GB, so I know there are other faults too. I'm just hoping that the 'Backups' being displayed are really backups, and that maybe I can delete them and get more space on my MBP. If anyone knows how I could find these 'Backups' please let me know.

    I was using about this mac>more info>storage
for any others having this problem, it's referring to local snapshots.
to disable local snapshots enter this command in the terminal:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
then turn off time machine and restart your computer. You will find that all local snapshots have been deleted.
    Cheers!

  • Unknown Space being taken up.

My Macbook Pro has a 250GB Start Up Disk and it has said recently that it is full. I did some digging and apparently my Itunes is taking up 150GB . That is the weird part however. I checked my itunes and at the bottom of the screen on itunes it says that I only have 70GB of items. I don't know what is taking up the rest of the 80GB of my computer.

Yes, as long as you are sure it is a duplicate, get rid of the file iTunes isn't actually using.  Highlight a file and use command+R to reveal which file it associates with a track.  If there's another on your computer that is identical, get rid of it.
If you have iTunes set to organize your music then anything that is in your library but there is a copy outside your iTunes folder is almost certainly the one not used.  However, there is some confusion that arises from the fact that iTunes changed folder organization several years ago and started putting things in separate media folders inside of the iTunes folder instead of just in Music.  If you see something like the below it may be tricky to sort them out without a bit of labor.

  • When I plug in my iPod nano 4th gen to iTunes, a lot of space is taken up by 'other'. What is this and how can I get rid of it to free up some space?

When I plug in my iPod nano 4th gen to iTunes and click on my iPod, I can see a graph showing how much space is available on my iPod and what it is being taken up by.  A lot of space is taken up by 'other'. What is this? I have a big iTunes library, with about 2000 songs, so I don't want all this space taken up by something I don't know what it is. How can I get rid of it?

I restored the phone so had no apps on it at all and there was still this certain amount of space used up by documents ! I've already had it in to the apple store and they didn't seem to have a clue either ! Ugh ! Wouldn't mind so much if the phone was free with a contract but I actually spent 450 quid buying this phone and it's always full of "nothing" so virtually unusable

  • "Other" space being used in iPod memory ...

i have been trying to sync about 2.5 gigs of audio to my iPod (it's a second gen. 4 gig). every time i try, the screen shows about 1.3 gigs being taken up by "other" files. i have no idea what these files are, how they got there, or how to get rid of them. does anyone have any ideas or tips?

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • ITunes won't show how much space is being taken up on my iPhone?

Hi guys, whenever I plug in my iPhone, and click on it under "Devices", at the very bottom it shows a capacity bar, where it shows you how much space is being taken up by audio, video, pictures, etc. The problem is, I don't know exactly how much space is being taken up! In the past, I could mouseover the bar and it would tell me how much space exactly is being taken up by audio, video, pictures, etc. but now it doesn't. Any way to fix this?
Also, after updating to iOS 7, I'm noticing a teal/blue-green bar in the capacity bar, but it's too small to be labeled so I don't know what it is, does anyone know what that bar represents? It's a bit annoying that iTunes took away the legend for the capacity bar, and doesn't label the smaller bars so that I don't know what they mean :\ Combine that with the fact that it also doesn't tell me how much space is being taken up by each category and it makes the whole system arbitrary.

    Anybody?

  • Any way to find out where most of the memory is being taken up?

I've got a G4 Tower with the latest 10.5 OS. I have an 80 GB drive, with 19 GB remaining.
Single clicking on Mac HD, then "apple i" shows me this.
Is there any way to find out more specifically where most of the memory is being taken up?
Say, what folders are the biggest in size, and where they are? I'd like to delete any unwanted crap if i could...
    Thanks.

It's not memory, it's disk space which is a different thing.
you can figure out what's taking all the space using 3rd party tools like [Whatsize|http://whatsize.en.softonic.com/mac], [Omindisksweeper|http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper>, [Disk Inventory X|http://www.derlien.com> or [Grandperspective|http://sourceforge.net/projects/grandperspectiv>. there is also a terminal method described on [this page|http://homepage.mac.com/francines/articles/TigerMisc.html].

Much of it is OSX and other things needed to run your Mac.
See The Storage Display for an explanation, and don't miss the link to Where did my Disk Space go?

  • Automatic Double-Space after inserting a character (eg. &)

    Hi,
I haven't had this problem previously, but recently whenever I type a bracket or 'and' symbol it automatically inserts a space after the space. For example...
"everything was great (Decker,2004)." as opposed to "everything was great (Decker,2004)."
How do I turn off this automatic double-space? I've looked everywhere, can't figure it out.
    Thanks

    Hi Laura,
The forum is working against you as well. The forums software strips out extra spaces in the display of a post, although it shows them in the compose window, which let me locate them. I replaced the pair with sticky spaces, so the line above (and below without the quotation formatting) should appear more as you typed it.
"everything was great  (Decker,2004)." as opposed to "everything was great (Decker,2004)."
The first place to check is Pages > Preferences > Auto Correction. Someone may have added this to the auto correction list. Unlikely, due to the number of steps that would have to be taken, but possible.

  • I have bought a tv series and watched the episodes but no matter what i do with settings the memory is still being taken up on my ipad2? what can i do?

I have bought a tv series and watched the episodes but no matter what i do with settings the memory is still being taken up on my ipad2? what can i do?

If you mean that the shows are still taking up space on the iPad - of course they will unless you remove them. Is that what you mean?
You can transfer them into iTunes on your computer and kept them there via File>Transfer Purchases while the iPad is connected to the computer with iTunes running and if the iPad has been selected on the left side of the iTunes window under Devices.
If you just want to delete them - go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Video>Edit and you can select the shows and delete them. You can also tap and hold down on the TV show icons in the Videos App and the X will pop up to delete the shows.
