Double tapping the home button iPhone 6

Not fully pushing the home button but double tapping it. Whats its supposed to be for? Whatever app I'm using pushes down about half way and then there is a blank space above it. I thought maybe it's another way to access open apps, but I opened some and they didn't appear in the blank space. I'm just curious if it has a purpose.

It's called Reachabilty.

  • How do I stop previews of recent activity appearing when I double tap the home button

HHow do I stop previews of recent activity from appearing when I double tap the home button

As others have mentioned, you are seeing the Multitasking bar which is a feature of iOS:
Understand multitasking and background activity on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If left alone long enough and after running many apps over a period of time, iOS will eventually close off the app(s) that have not been used for the longest period of time to gain back memory to be used to run other apps that are currently not in Multitasking. There's no way to automatically prevent an app from appearing in the Multitasking bar nor any way to shut them all down at once. You can easily close them off manually as needed by swiping up on the app's displayed screen shot (NOT the lower icon). Multitasking is by design and cannot be changed/modified.

  • Double-tapping the home button locks the phone

iPhone 4s, still running ios 7.1.2 because I don't want my phone bogged down even though I'd love to see some of ios 8's features.
This has happened a few times in the last few months.  I'll have an app up.  I'll double-tap the home button so that I can swipe/close that app.  The screen does not change.  All keys/screen tapping becomes locked -- nothing I do does anything.
I'll press the top power button and the screen goes black and then stays black - nothing I do will bring it back.
I end up having to hold the home and power buttons and reset my phone.
This happens from various apps -- not the same one every time.
    Anyone else?

  • I updated my 3GS to iOS5, but when i double tap the home button, it doesn't show the camera app, just the ipod controls?

I badly need help, i just updated my 3GS to iOS5, but i don't see any difference, i don't have the new features that they're talking about. When i double tap the home button, it just shows the iPod controls and no camera app shows up.

My iPhone 3GS is still on iOS3 but I think you could already change what double tapping the Home button can do before iOS5, by tapping "Settings" -> "Home".  That may have changed in iOS5 but I don't think it should have.

  • TS1702 When we double tap the home button, only about half of the icons appear at the bottom.  How do we get them all to appear?

WHen we double tap the home button, only about half of the apps appear.  How do we get them all o appear?

If an app freezes on you - you can try force quitting the app.
Force quit the app by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears. Let go of the sleep button and then hold down on the home button until the app quits. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • When I double tap the home button and delete open apps, they will just re appear if I double tap home again,...

I always delete my open apps but since i did the lates update the apps wont delete they will just re appear when i double tap home again,.. Whyyy??

    For clarification purpose:
You start by double clicking the Home button to reveal the screen as shown above. You then swipe upwards on the App Previews to clear all recently used Apps and end up with a screen like below?
You then tap the Home button to return to normal screen. Then you immediately double tap the Home button again to see all the recently used Apps as shown in the first picture? If this isn't the procedure you are following, please explain your process, and exactly what you are seeing. Attaching screen shots will help.

  • How do I clear apps after double-tapping the home button?

This is in relation to iOS 7.

    I found the answer here: http://ios.wonderhowto.com/how-to/completely-close-out-running-applications-ipho ne-ios-7-save-battery-0147375/
you still double tap the home button. There is a preview screen above the programs icon. swipe up, and the app is removed.

  • Does double tapping the home button ...

makes you feel like you're about to break the button?
I do. The home button seems so weak that the more I double tap the home button it's more likely to break real fast.

    No.

  • HT1688 when you double tap the home button to go back to your other apps are those apps always running and using cellular data even if I am not currently using them?  I thought it froze them and didn't use data other that a select few apps like Facebook,

when you double tap the home button to go back to your other apps are those apps always running and using cellular data even if I am not currently using them?  I thought it froze them and didn't use data other that a select few apps like Facebook, email, etc.  Also I always select no when I download an app and it wants me to have those push notifications.  Because that would mean that I would have to delete my apps after everytime I just them from that bar and that would be very annoying and just stupid.  Or maybe apps do use data and it's just a big scheme to make everyone go over on their data plans.

  • HT201365 On this new ios7 update how do I kill apps running in the background now? I used to be able to double tap the home button

On this new ios7 update how do I kill apps running in the background now? I used to be able to double tap the home button

Double tap the home button.  Slide the preview window upward.  You can do 2 at a time.
It's rarely useful or necessary to do this. Very few apps actually "run in the background" (such as audio streaming and navigation apps).  The vast majority are frozen and consume no resources.  The iOS manages memory for you to optimize running apps.

  • Triple-tapping the home button (iphone 6)?

I just got an iphone 6 last night, and while exploring the features, I accidentally tapped (not clicked, but just barely touching it) the home button and the screen moved down halfway to display a black top half of the screen. Does anyone know why, or the purpose of this feature? I couldn't find anything about it online anywhere.
    Thanks.

It's called Reachability. It's actually a double touch, not triple. It's designed to bring the top of the screen down so that it's easier to reach with one hand.
See the section titled "Everything Within Reach"

You should see the home page on the left, the app you were looking at, and previous apps to the right.

  • IPhone Status on Double-Tapping the Home Button

In full screen apps, we won't see the network connection status, time, and battery level.
If we want to see them, we may have to quit the foreground app.
Will it be good to have the status on the app switching screen?
