Double whammy!? Stolen laptop w/itunes + dead ipod (reinstall = no songs!)

Friends,
Last week my ipod battery died while on a road trip and my laptop was lost in the mail by UPS. I reinstalled itunes on a new laptop to refeul the ipod and get my songs to my new laptop. Well, after installing the software on the laptop and syncing the laptop, I now don't see any of my songs on my laptop or on the computer. Can I recover this data? Free or for free? Is it still buried in the confines of my laptop somewhere? Or can I only get itunes songs back by calling tech support.
Help,g

If your talking about purchased songs, you can email apple about this. Just keep in mind they are under no obligation to allow you to "Redownload" your bought songs, and even if they allow you if the songs have been modified since you bought them, you won't be able to download them. Some people have emailed them and had success in "Redownloading". http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/download/
There are programs out there that can search a blank iPod and TRY to recover bits and peices of songs off it, but usually your better off redownloading from wherever you got the tunes or importing them from CD again.
If they do let you do this, heres a link on how to backup bought songs which Im sure you now see how important this is http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/backup/ If you have an external harddrive is better and easier to just use windows explorer to copy and paste the whole "My Music" folder over to it. this will backup all the music inside, bought and imported AND backup the iTUnes Library file which contains all the playlist, ratings, playcounts ect ect

  • ITunes sees iPod but no songs

In iTunes, my iPod shows up with the correct name, but no files show up. When disconnected from my PC, all of my files show up and play just fine. Help! Thanks.

The songs that you had on your original computer are saved on that computer, and your iPod. You cannot drag songs off of an iPod and place them into a new library.
You can, however, use your iPod as an external hard drive, and use it to transfer files to a new computer:

  • I am restoring the data from my itunes account to a replacement ipod touch. After all is finished in my laptop through itunes the ipod stays on the same page and does not let me finish the process, wht shoul i do?

I got a replacement ipod and did the restore data through itunes with its sync in my laptop, however, after itunes process is finished the ipod does not let me choose to continue or to finish the process, what should I do?,

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • ITunes and iPod show different song counts... not all songs sync

    Hi,
I've been having this problem for many many years.
I have more than 18,000 songs now, and the song count in iTunes is always 5 higher than on the iPod.  I have my iPod set to sync the entire library.  All songs in the library are checked for sync as well.  I get no error message during sync that something might be missing, incompatible, or corrupt  When I look at iPod music in iTunes it has the wrong count as well.
Every time a new version of iTunes comes out, I send feedback to Apple regarding this issue.  As expected, Apple ignores their feedback, and from what I can tell they ignore the community forums as well, and they have yet to address the issue in any way, or even contact me about it.
I'd like to find which songs are bad and remove/delete them from my library and collection or fix them.  Is there a sync log hidden somewhere that I can check to see which songs will or won't sync?  Why doesn't iTunes tell us whether or not it expects a song to sync or if it's iPod compatible?  Why does it say less songs will sync without giving a reason why?
I've heard that iPods don't sync duplicate files, but I've looked at my duplicates.. At some point, Apple screwed that up too, it shows songs that are from different compilations as duplicates now, instead of looking at the data proper to determine if it's a duplicate, it seems to just look at the Artist and Song Title and even that doesn't seem to be correct because I have more duplicate song titles listed and in some cases it lists songs from two different artists as being duplicates.  I have many more duplicates listed in itunes than the discrepancy in the song count would suggest... 3,835 more songs to be exact.
I've tried to select only checked songs and get the same results.  I've tried to restore the iPod and I get the same results.  I've tried clearing the library completely and reloading all songs and I still get the same results.  I've scanned through the library and all songs appear to have compatible settings.   All my songs are either mp3 or m4a(aac) formats.  I don't use playlists at all.
If anyone knows of a solution, please let me know.  I don't want to have to check every single file.
    Thanks!

So that you know, for the future, Apple makes it very clear (specifically so, when you submit Feedback) that they do not respond to the feedback directly. They do however, read the feedback and consider suggestions for improvements to iPods. They also look for - and act upon - bug reports etc. That's what the Feedback is for.
They also make it clear that they do not monitor or respond to these discussions. (That said, Apple employees are free to - and do look at - some of the posts and have been known to contact posters directly when looking for further information regarding bugs.)
As you have now found, this community (as Apple now prefers to call it) can often help sort out your problems, espcecially when skilled users such as tt2 (aka Steve) are let loose!

  • New ipod to replace stolen one, current iTunes, PC laptop - not happy! Help

Okay so here is my problem - I'll try and describe what I've done as best I can. I've been through all the Apple help and can't see any error message info like the one I've had.
Recently got new 30gB black iPod to replace a stolen one. As they only come with USB chargers I decided to charge mine on my work PC computer which does not have any iPod/iTunes software (this is where I think it started to go wrong...)
I then plugged it into my laptop with iTunes already installed from previous iPod. Error message came up on laptop saying iPod recognised, but there may be a problem with the new hardware and it may not work properly. Then the icon disappears and I can't access the iPod through anything - not seen in iTunes, My Computer - nowhere. Hmm...
Incidentally my wireless internet at home is down and I can't get online on my laptop (which might also be part of the problem).
However, I plugged the new iPod into a colleague's work computer with iTunes installed, it recognised my iPod, and I was able to register it online and give it a name. Tried it back on my laptop again to update my iTunes library and nothing. Incidentally I have got the latest iPod update on my laptop but seeing is it's not recognising it in the first place other than saying there's a problem, I can't do anything with it.
I've tried putting the iPod into disk mode when attached to the laptop but it says Ok to disconnect, there's no other change in the screen. And I don't see a folder with an ! nor a sad face so all in all I'm totally stumped.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? I'm really worried about totally uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling because I don't have an external storage drive yet and I'm frightened I'll lose all my music.
Please please please can anyone help? thanks x

    hiya!
interesting. was the previous ipod also a video? the videos and nanos have more features, and that seems to make them a bit more sensitive to a slightly flaky USB connection than some other models.
let's check to see if this is an issue for you:
iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB
... i've also seen the Toshiba treatment work on a Dell (note that the video probably won't charge off the Dell if you try this).
iPod not recognized correctly on Toshiba laptop
    keep us posted.

  • Laptop with Itunes went dead...how do I get all my music from Nano to IPOD?

I had my iPod nano hooked up to a Dell laptop with iTunes. Of course the laptop went dead and now I don't know how to get the music from the nano to my iPad?
Anyone have any ideas or instructions to assist?

    Hi,
You music is not in your iCloud account, it is in iTunes in the Cloud. Whether you use iCloud personally or not, it will not have an effect on the iTunes in the Cloud functionality. If you are using iTunes, then all of your purchases through iTunes will use iTunes in the Cloud as a backup for your purchases.

  • Laptop stolen - now need to put ipod tunes 'back' onto new itunes......

    Hi,
Well other than the utter crap of having my Macbook stolen (and changing all personal account numbers etc.), I am now trying to piece together what I can, and would really appreciate advice.
I have recently picked up a new Mac and am trying to rebuild what I lost including music:
    1. I did not back up for the last few months, but have songs on my ipod Nano, that I would very much like "back" on my itunes in my new setup. I'm scared pluggin my nano into my new Mac will erase what is on my Nano - and or not let me 'sync' it. As this is the ONLY copy of certain songs I have (Downloaded from iTMS) I thought I"d play it safe and ask for advice before I go plugging and syncing....
    2. My understanding is that itunes song's I've bought, if I no longer have the physical files, I can't 'redownload' them without paying again. correct?
PS. I authorized itunes on my new Mac, and drag-dropped the latest itunes library from my Backup HD.
Thanks for any and all help.

The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only

    PodUtil Mac & Windows

The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting to your new computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase & Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • I have the iPod touch and I had iTunes on my computer. I was prompted to update my itunes. When I was going to, it said first I should sync my ipod, so, with it connected to my laptop, and itunes on, I did so. Now that it finished, it's messed up!

First of all, I have an iPod Touch which is connected thru my Windows 7 laptop. It has been working find up til now.  I have been prompted to dl the latest iTunes update, so I clicked to do so. But I was advised to sync my iPod first, which I did. As soon as that was finished, I got an Apple logo on my iPod and an an empty loading bar.  I went to a discussion forum on Google where they said "uninstall iTunes" so I did. I then re-installed iTunes 10 and nothing changed, so I uninstalled it again.  One thing I noted was that "Deborahs iPod" was no longer on iTunes when I did re-install it. So now I am at the point where I have a "dead" iPod with only Apple logo and bar against a black bg and nothing else. And I do not currently have iTunes installed on my laptop. My iPod is plugged into it.  What do I do know???  Thanks very much for any help.

    - Do you have to right boxes checked in the Tones pane of iTunes for the iPod to get them synced to the iPod:
    - Were the tones purchased with the same account as all the other media on the iPod?

  • Stolen laptop-purchased music from iTunes

My laptop was stolen - if I purchased songs from iTubes Store, is there a way to download those songs again?

If you have an iPod with the songs on it, you can make use of this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Other than that your options are limited.
Apple's policy is clear: iTS purchases can be downloaded only once. It is your responsibility to make back-ups . (For most people, this will involve either CD's/DVD's or an external drive .)
That being said, at their discretion they have made one-time exceptions to this policy. You can ask for an exception by submitting the form on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/
Good Luck! But whatever the response from Apple, remember:
Your music is valuable - please back it up!
    P.S.
If you want to get a bit of a "bigger picture" on back-ups, you might want to make yourself a cup of tea and have a look at this article on the PC World web site and this Microsoft support page .

  • ITunes Content on Stolen Laptop

I recently had two laptops stolen. Is there a way (1) to "deauthorize" the stolen laptops so the music on the laptops can be "authorized" for use on other laptops and (2) obtain copies of the lost music purchased from iTunes?

You cannot yourself deauthorize a computer that's not working or to which you no longer have access. If you really feel you need to deauthorize that system now - it won't do much other than getting you back that authorization to use on another computer if you're already approaching the limit - you can try contacting the iTunes Music Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of their web page and explaining the problem to them. They might be willing to clear your authorizations for you.
As to recovering the apps and music, applications can be downloaded again. If you didn't make a backup of your apps (something you absolutely should be doing on a regular basis), go through the purchase process as normal and it should allow you to download the apps again without being charged. Music, videos and movies are not the same, though; they cannot be downloaded more than once per purchase. You need to restore them from your backup or from an iPod, if you have one. If you have neither, you can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis, but don't count on it.

  • My ipod was connecting to my home wi-fi just fine until I uploaded new music from my Itunes on my laptop. Now my ipod and my iphone will not connect to my wireless network. I've tried resetting the network settings etc... Nothing seems to work. Help!

My ipod (version 6.1.3) was connectiong to my home wi-fi just fine until I uploaded new music from my itunes via my laptop. Now my ipod and my iphone will not connect to my wireless network. I've uplugged my wireless network and reset my network settings etc... nothing seems to work. Please help!

Does the iOS devices connect to other networks?
Does the iOS devices see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Since both iPhone and iPod stopped connecting I suspect a problem with your network.
