Dowloading applications - what to do with the files?

Hi,
I have downloaded MSN messenger for my new Macbook Pro. I have made a folder called Downloads under my user in which I save the dmg file. When I open this and installation starts I get another messenger file on my desktop.
If I then try and close messenger after installation and delete this file, messenger won't work. I want a clean desktop. When I downloaded firefox, I simply threw away the same kind of file and firefox still works great.
What do I do with this file/icon, after I have installed a program and dragged it to the dock?

What you did is just create a shortcut to the image that was on your desktop.
-- Do not drag the expanded image icon itself
(nor of course the compressed .dmg or .zip):
It's an application that you have to put in the Applications folder.
Where is the application,
step by step:
- download your compressed .dmg
- double-click it: it expands as a white icon containing an application and some ReadMe files or link to the author's website
- read the ReadMe file, so you can learn how to install/uninstall your application
- this expanded file acts like a CD or an external drive: its icon looks like a drive icon
- (usually,) drag the application from within this "CD-ish", "drivish" folder, to your Applications folder on your Mac.
- now you can eject the expanded white icon, just like when you eject a CD or an external drive.
The application is now copied in the Applications folder.
--> Now that the application is in your Applications folder, you can create its Dock shortcut, you can create an alias of it if you wish, etc.

What to do with the files on main HD?

My hard drive is almost full, primarily from movies( movie folder and itune movie category) and music( itune and music folder ) and photos ( iphotos and picture folder ). Even if I back up these item, my computer is still full. Am I to start using these files from the external drive, erase the other files from my main computer and just use the main computer for basic files? Is the the norm? If so how do I set it up so I can assess the files.

Unless you're in a position to upgrade the disk in your computer (not the easiest thing to do with an iMac), moving those files to an external drive is a reasonable approach. I'd move the entire iTunes folder from your Music library to the external drive. Once it's there, hold down an "option" key when you launch iTunes and it will ask you to select an iTunes library. Choose the iTunes folder on the external disk. Once that's working, as a final test I'd quit iTunes, move the iTunes folder out of the Music folder of your internal disk (perhaps onto the Desktop), then launch iTunes once more to be sure everything continues to work. Once you've verified that, you can delete the original iTunes library.

When downloading a *.cap or *.capx file Firefox opens it where it should ask what to do with the file. What to do?

*.cap files are generated by Capella from capella.de a scorewriter program.
Whenever I open a *.cap or *.capx file Firefox opens it always with a kind of lister-program i.s.o. asking what to do.
Internet Explorer and Chrome handle these files in a correct way. There I can define to open these files with a Capella program.
Firefox is the negative exception.

The firefox does not ask what to do with the torrent files, it opens directly into bittorrent. How do I switch it back to when it asks what to do with the file?

You can check the setting for that MIME type in "Tools > Options > Applications" and change the setting to "Always ask".
You may have to reset all download actions by removing the mimeTypes.rdf file manually.

When logging on to Hotmail, a window opens asking me "What to do with this file" for "default.aspx"

This morning, I am unable to log in to Hotmail. The homepage appears normally, but after I enter my email address and password and click to submit them, a window pops us asking me what to do with the file "default.aspx." I have a Vista machine, and last night my computer automatically installed a ton of Microsoft updates. In fact, the update list shows that one of the updates failed to install. At the end of this message, I have pasted the details of the failed update. I have checked the Hotmail support forum, and someone else posted that the have experienced the same problem this morning. The Microsoft "expert" asked him or her to contact Mozilla for support for this issue. Thanks in advance for whatever help you can provide, although I highly suspect that this is a problem on the Microsoft/Hotmail end, not yours.

Hotmail is rolling out a server change at their end which might be causing this problem. Mozilla has spoken to them about it and they are trying to fix it. I won't be able to provide you a time estimate by when it will be solved but hotmail/mozilla is certainly looking at this issue.

If you've already installed the latest version then the message may be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

Usually that error can be cleared up by renaming the personal config folder. Turn on your OS's hidden files and then go to...
C: > Users > your username > AppData > Roaming > Dreamweaver (version) > your language > configuration
Rename the configuration folder configuration-old and start DW up. That should create an entirely new configuration folder and correct the menu.xml file.

What to do with .m2v file?

I want to burn this .m2v file that compressor output but when I go to put it into DVD Studio pro it says that "one of the volumes is still in use." This whole process is really really frustrating I just want to make a DVD. Please work!

A .dmg file is an image file. If you open it a new "drive" will appear on your desktop with the files the image file contains. Applications commonly come this way and you drag the application to your applications folder, or maybe you run an installer from the image drive. I am guessing that what is happening to you is the dmg file is appearing and then automatically (probably some setting on your browser) opening so you are also seeing the drive. The drive doesn't actually contain anything so you can drag it to the trash when you are done with it. It's the dmg file that contains the original files and once you have dragged those from the drive to your folder you will have made a copy by doing so and you can get rid of the dmg file too.

What to do with CER file?

Hello all.
This is my first time working with security in Java and I am completely lost.
Here is my situation:
1) I have a P12 file given to me by a vendor
2) I imported the P12 file into InternetExplorer
3) I exported the certificate from IE to a DER "cer" file
4) I use KeyTool to import it.
No matter what I do I do not seem to be able to get this to work....
Where I am confused especially, is what to do with the CER file that I got from the vendor. I thought once I exported it I could import it in using the keytool but that doesn't see to work.
I'm basically lost and need some direction. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

When I open iPhoto 9.2.1 it says that my library needs to be upgraded but when I upgrade the library I am trying to open (33 GB worth of pictures from 2006) the new application says it cannot read the files and how to find them on the system to reimport?!

hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Léon Hoeneveld's response works for me. You will need to download a tool that allows you to edit the WSDL and reorder the values.
I've used a freeware tool like notepad++ collapsed all the levels and opened up the <wsdl:definitions xmlns:wsdl... segment and reordered the subgroups beneath it accordingly.

What's Wrong with the Artwork Feature?

I used to have all my files saved with artwork, but lately, I've been having files lose their artwork and some files don't seem to save artwork no matter how I put it in (either through right click and paste or info). There's nothing wrong with the files, as far as I can tell. They play fine, and their other tags are too. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

He didn't say anything about v2.4, so I have been using v2.3. I misquoted him in saying v2.3 or above.

Also make sure windows media player is set to NOT update from the internet. WMP can change things in the background without even seeming to open, depending on what websites you go to. The default is to get info from the internet.

"Performance" problems with the File adapter on Plain J2SE Adapter Engine

At the moment I'm on a customer side to solve some XI issues for a few days. One of the issues is the performance of the Plain J2SE Adapter Engine, using the file adapter to transfer XML messages(already XI message format) from the legacy system to the Integration Engine. The File adapter has to deal with "large" XML messages(max at the moment is 65 Mb) and the engine fails with the following error when transferring the big XML file: "ERROR: Finished sending to Integration Engine with error "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError". Skip confirmation and quit this loop".
As far I got the information from the customer the memory use of the Plain adapter engine is set to 512Mb. This is maybe to low. But I don't know where to look for this, I only have the adapter web interface in front of me, no access to the OS it self via for example remote connection.
On the Integration Engine I know there is the ability to split large message with the file adapter(File Content Conversion), but I don't know this for the Plain Adapter Engine. Is there a possibility to do this also on the Plain Adapter Engine?

On the first solution, yes that is possible, we first decided to see if the legacy system can do the splitting, before starting developing a Java program.
On the second solution, as far as I know is this solution possible on the Integration Engine. But we are facing the problems on the Plain J2SE Adapter Engine. I went trough that documentation(link:
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/6f/246b3de666930fe10000000a114084/frameset.htm ), to look for I similiar solution in the Plain Adapter Engine. So my question is, is this possible with the Plain Adapter? And if so, what kind of parameters I need to use to achieve this.
