Down loaded Mavericks, will not install on my computer because it says "this hard drive is used for time machine back up".
Down loaded mavericks, it will not install on my computer because it says" this hard drive is used for time machine back up". So I used my old computer hard drive for back up and reloaded the program but it still says the first hard drive is being used.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Make sure you have selected your MacBook Pro's hard drive as the destination to install Mavericks. If so, you have the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive.
That's the folder used by Time Machine to store backups of your files, and the Mavericks installer understands that your internal hard disk is the Time Machine drive.
To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb", empty the Trash and run the Mavericks installer. Finally, install OS X Mavericks

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and when I attempted to install Yosemite the MacBook Pro Drive is greyed out and a message appears that read,"drive is used for Time Machine Backup." How do I change this to install Yosemite?
Thanks,
ScottWell, if you don't want to use that drive for Time Machine anymore, then you should format it using Disk Utility. Then you can install Yosemite on it.
You should, of course, have another full backup somewhere. I really can't state this strongly enough: You should have a full and complete and up to date backup of all your data before you upgrade to OS X Yosemite. -
I have a Windows 7 OS 64 bit, ZT desktopcomputer with 16meg memory. I have not been able to install any updates
to itunes to my computer. It downloads, but then when installing, it looks like it is going to complete the install
and then it rolls back and says the errors occured and to try again. I have a win7 64bit HP Laptop that installed
the itune updates with no problem. I have to sync my iphone to my Laptop as it will not work with my desktop.
Please advise.
Thanks,
RogerDo you have any other drive connected, which has a copy of FCP X?
I would make a copy of the application in some drive, just in case; then disconnect the drive, delete the application (could use FCS Remover to delete everything related).
Then, try installing from the purchases tab in the App Store. -
I cannot install ODX Yosemite over OSX Mavericks as my Mac Book Pro (early 2011) advises that the disc "Mackintosh HD" is used for Time Machine back ups. This is not the case however as I use a separate external HD for this purpose, help please ?!

Can't load Mavericks says that my disk is used for Time machine.
I am unable to progress with the loading because when it asks which disk to load it on, I mouse over my hard drive and says this disk is used for Time machine back up. I have an external hard drive for the back up and there is nothing in my Time Machine settings that has my hard drive. It is a Macbook Pro 15" 2011.
Disconnect the external drive. Sometimes, that message appears because the folder used by Time Machine to store backups is in the root level of the hard drive, so open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb" and empty the Trash. Finally, open the Mavericks installer again and install OS X Mavericks -
Can not installed mountain lion msg" macintosh hd is using for time machine back up" please help
I downloaded mountain lion but can not install, msg" macintosh HD is using for time machine back up , how can I change that...thanks
Somehow, a Backups.backupdb folder got created on your startup drive.
You won't find it via a Spotlight or Finder search, so open your internal HD via the Finder.
That folder is at the top level. Just delete it. -
I just installed a larger hard drive, and used my Time Machine Backup to transfer my files back to the new hard drive. When I open Iphoto, my thumbnails are there, but they aren't linked back to the actual photos. I see the original photo files in my HD. Is there a way to link the Iphoto thumbnails back to the original files?
Use the Firewire cable and t boot the old Mac's hard drive to the new Mac's desktop and transfer your entire iPhoto folder.
Use Disk Utiliy to erase'format HFS+ Journaled your TimeMachine drive and use the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your new boot drive to the external, it's hold option bootable. -
2012 Macbk air, with OSX 10.8.5. See my question above. Mavericks won't install on my Air's HD, says that both the HD - AND - the external HD (which has a different name from the laptop HD) are used for time machine backups. I've deleted my time machine plists, restarted, repaired permissions, turned time machine off, repeatedly selected the external drive in time machine preferences. HELP. (Install went perfectly on my desktop Mac, which also has an external HD for time machine).
I need to add that the only place I have the "Backups.backupdb" folder is on my backup external disk, and it's not on my HD :-( . If it were, I'd delete it!

I've downloaded Mavericks, but the istaller says my primary HD -- used for OS and files -- is used for Time Machine and Mavericks can't be installed.
Primary does NOT have TM files on it . . . it's on a separate, dedicated HD.
What can I do?OS X v10.6, OS X Lion- Cannot install Mac OS X v10.6 or later on a volume used by Time Machine for backups

Tried to upgrade from 10.7.4 on relatively new MBP. It appears that Mountain Lion successfully downloaded from App Store. However, ML will not install to the hard drive because "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer". Thanks for advice.
Try going through the steps described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3926.

I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes. Now my iPad will not sync. I get the message: "This iPad cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device is not started." What do I do?
Type "apple mobile device service" into the search bar at the top of this page by "Support" and read the resulting help articles.

I can not find my seagate hard drive that contain my time machine back ups how do i do that?
my airport extreme can not locate my seagate hard drive with all my back ups how do i fix this i need to restore some settings?
As Bob says, that's problematical.
If you were backing-up to that drive while it was directly-connected to your Mac, and now want to move it to your Airport, there's an extra problem. See the blue box in #E2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If you had previously been backing-up to the drive over your network, the backups may be corrupted (that happens rather often, and is the reason it's not recommended). If so, you may be able to repair them, per #A5 in the same article.
Or, you may need to reset the Airport. See Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ. -
I am trying to install itunes on my pc so I can upgrade my Iphone. I currently have windows vista. When I try to install itunes it says I am operating in safe mode and won't install. I have tried to reboot my computer and selected "normal start up" but it still won't work. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
Is that on a 64-bit system?
If so, try the following user tip:

I've just received Snow Leopard disc and tried to install it but nothign is ever that easy. It says that hard drive in use for Time Machine backup so can't install. I've never used Time Machine and settings appear to confirm that. I don't want to set it to restore and lose everything and have to install it again so not sure what to do. Can anyone advise me

Please update your profile info, then Jane - we can only go on the info you give us.

Can't install Lion on my HD. Says this disk is used for time machine backups
I just downloaded Lion to install on my 2008 macbook and i can't get past the window that asks me to select the disk where I want Lion installed. It says my hard disk is used for time machine backups. Any suggestions on how I can select my hd to install Lion?
ThanksThat means there is a directory on your HD called something like backups. backupdb
It thinks you're using the drive for TM. Delete this directory and it will then load.

Captfred
