Down-loading software upgrades is being limited by "server timed out"

My broadband connection is of modest speed as I live many miles from the Telephone Exchange. When I attempt to download Apple software upgrades, say of 50 mb, I get cut off after about 12 mb with a message" sever timed out code -1001". When I make a second attempt, I have to start again "at the beginning" rather than continue at the point where the last attempt failed.
Grateful for any advice (apart from being told to move house nearer the Telephone Exchange!) I am only just computer literate.
regards

Hi,
Make sure that the software while upgrading and downgrading was from your service providers official site. If not, go to the following link :
http://in.blackberry.com/support/apps-and-software/desktop-and-device-download-sites.html
Now, if you have already upgraded and downgraded the software, and tried battery pulls. The only problem that i can think of for browser time out's could be with the service books.
Open the link and follow the instructions:

Adding to Jon,  that single /20 block  is a huge block   , you could brake  for example to  16     /24 networks,  254 ip host per /24 network.
    Example :
    175.106.16.0/24
    172.106.17.0/24
    x.x.18.x/24
    x.x.19.x/24
    x.x.20.x/24
    x.x.21.x/24
    and so on...
The key to keep in mind  is  how you would want these blocks be announce,  I suggest you do thorough analysis  of your company internet architecture , present and future and come  up with proper  allocation of your blocks to minimize the re-addressing and re-advertizing nightmares.
another example could be out of a /24 off your /20 block say 175.106.18.0/24  can be  further brake  down to smaller blocks to be announced in various sites , again , like Jon indicated in his post, it all depends on your company's requirements for example such as branch offices having their own internet ISP where you may have public web servers  requiring public IP addresses, or even requiring public IP pool blocks  for various purposes etc..
Another example of further braking  down your /24  you can have two /26's off that 175.106.18.0/24 that is still part of the /20 network , which could be 175.106.18.0/25 and 175.106.18.128/25 allowing 126 public IP addresses per network , and have these blocks being announced by  different  office branches  that have their own ISP , this is just an example , or announce both and separate  the routing at the perimeter device, there are so many variables in allocating and braking down that huge /20 block.

Why can't I update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1? Every time I try it gets all the way done downloading it; however when it's processing the file the page tells me "There is a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. Network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active. or try again later." and next to the file it has err = -3259. I have tried this 17 times and it won't work. My iTunes is completely up to date. I have made sure that my connection is fine and I have tried turning my firewall off with no avail. This has happened to me before but usually the update will go through after 2-3 tries, never to this extent. I don't know what to do. Help!

Error -3259 is a network timeout error, usually. This article might help:

  • Unable to update software 4.3.5 server timed out?

When I attempt to update my iphone with new software update 4.3.5 on itunes, system will attempt to download and after at least an hour it states "There was a problem downloading the software for the  iphone. Network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and network connection is active or try again later".  There is no problem with the connection - my internet is clearly connected throughout the process; I have tried again at least 5 or 6 times; I even uninstalled itunes and reinstalled - so no problem with itunes and I know its the latest version. Never had any trouble updating before - any suggestions??

This is asked and answered often.
Disable your firewall/security software and try again.

i get a '408' error--server timed out when i try to download from iTunes--this is straight after installing legit rosetta stone software--a windows site mentions this as a possible cause--and the timing points to it--other songs downloaded--but pretty sure it stopped after the software finally got properly installed--any ideas? Thanks.

  • There was a problem downloading the software for the ipod. Network connection timed out

There was a problem downloading the software for the ipod. Network connection timed out. This is for the latest ios for the iPod touch. Already walked through the steps to validate that all settings were correct with the firewall, Windows defender has been disabled. This has not been an issue with previous ios updates. Not sure what the issue here is.

    Hi,
You might have to place your iPod in Recovery Mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.
    Hope this helps!

The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be too much net traffic."  Comcast tells me server is not down all other network activity is fine.  WHat's up with this?

Starting earlier today, this also became my problem - can receive but not send in Entourage. The account settings are correct in Entourage - I even created a new account.  My Mac running 10.7.5 won't read the original Office : MAC 2008 disk, so I can't do a fix or reinstall from the disk.
This is not an issue if I log onto the Comcast site.
And so, I started using Mail but, unlike Entourage, Mail won't import my Entourage info.

I just had the same problem updating my iPhone 4. I found out by turning my Kaspersky virus protection OFF, then everything worked out, and I was able to update my phone.
Virus protection programs can cause alot of problems sometime, so it's worth a try if you haven't already tried.

  • CIFS AO down after software upgrade

    Hi all,
i'm currently starting software upgrade procedure in my WAAS environment.
    I'm upgrading from 4.1.5b to 4.2.3c
after rebooting my WAE's i'm having the following alarm:
    Critical Alarms:
            Alarm ID                 Module/Submodule               Instance
       1 cifs_ao_down              wafs                         WAFS
    Major Alarms:
    None
    Minor Alarms:
    None
    nkrwa222#sh licens
License Name   Status      Activation Date Activated By
    Transport      active      06/22/2010      guf
    Enterprise     not active
    Video          not active
    nkrwa222#
However even if i start the CIFS Accelerator the alarm still persists.
    nkrwa222(config)#accelerator cifs ena
    Enabled windows-print accelerator
    Enabled cifs accelerator
WARNING: Accelerator doesn't optimize the traffic until license is configured.
It takes up to 2 minutes to start the traffic optimization after the license is activated.
    nkrwa222(config)#
    nkrwa222(config)#
I'm running no application accelerator cause i'm using transport license. And so i do not really need CIFS AO however i need to clear the alarm especially on CM.
Any ideas how i can fix this?
    thanks for your input

    Dieter,
Correct, you can not enable any accelerators if you only have the Transport license.
I'd suggest you execute the following commands to see if the alarm clears.
    pdi-7341-19(config)#no wafs edge enable
    pdi-7341-19(config)#no wafs core enable
    pdi-7341-19(config)#no accelerator cifs enable

  • Long time to load a first page, get "the connection has timed out" frequently.

Frequently takes a long time to get to first page. Even a "speed test" to check my DSL connection. Usually can get to "google.com" quickly but it did come up slow today (just a test for a simple page).
I have a wireless N router with it's own Firewall (which I didn't want) and I think I've turned it off. Symantec firewall, don't think WinXP firewall is on.
Tried refresh of Adobe Flash Player per suggestion in this forum, no help.
Would like to have a tool to see how long each step of getting to the web takes so I can see if there's a bottleneck.
Occasionally "try again" button works on the "connection has timed out" message.
My PC is 6 yr old. xp-home, lots of ram, HDD available. Run Symantec AV/MBAM frequently. Ran Housecall and Dr. Web- no problems.
Talked to my DSL provider and Symantec in depth. Similar lethargy when I get IE running but not as frequent as under FF. Measured my DSL speed - 5MB as promised.
When the lag occurs, Task Manager does not show FF taking a lot of processor time.
Have done the things suggested in FAQ to help with performance.
Also going to bleepingcomputer.com to see if there are suggestions there.
I'm hoping someone has experienced an analog to this and has a suggestion to diagnose and solve. Thanks - Mike.

Here's your sign! This is my problem and its solution. Let me know if someone needs help to interpret.
If you frequently get "connection timed out", go to your ISP and get Manual DNS addresses. Then beat them till they put a real fix on their system.
Problem is in the DNS server service provided by my DSL provider, Bell South/AT&T. Result of a poor performing DNS is that one can't get thru to the selected site.
If you do a web search +dsl +"time out" you will see the history with Windstream. THEY finally issues a system-wide fix which, it appears, flattened the issue. Then add +AT&T to see that experience. I did not read it all thru, I'm wasted chasing this problem. I don't give AT&T ANY credit for customer service or heading off problems for their customers on this one.
    AT&T support offers me:

How do I check and update my DNS settings, if my DNS settings are not "server assigned"?
When you visit a Web site, your browser sends the site's alphabetic domain name to a DNS server. The DNS server translates the domain into a numeric IP address, then responds to your computer with the Internet location of the Web site. Incorrect DNS settings on your computer can disrupt this information flow and cause your Internet browsing to slow down or fail.
If you have trouble browsing the Internet, check your DNS settings. You likely have your DNS settings as "server-assigned." This allows DNS information to be automatically sent to your computer, which may improve your browsing experience. However, you may need to have your DNS settings manually entered
Note: If you are using a router to connect to your Internet service, check with your manufacturer's web site for instructions on updating your DNS settings with the following information:
    Primary DNS: 68.94.156.1
    Secondary DNS: 68.94.157.1
    1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel from the menu.
    2. Select Network and Internet Connections.
    3. Double-click the Network Connections icon at the lower right.
    4. Under the LAN or High-Speed Internet section, right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
    5. From the "Components checked are used by this connection" list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click the Properties button.
    6. Read the current DNS setting on the lower half of the TCP/IP properties screen. If the radio button Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected, you do not need to update your DNS settings. Otherwise, please continue.
    7. Input the new Preferred DNS server of 68.94.156.1 and the Alternate DNS server of 68.94.157.1.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Return to the Network Connections screen. If you have a DSL Connection icon in the Broadband section, proceed to next step otherwise you have completed updating your DNS settings.
    10. Under the Broadband section, right-click the DSL Connection icon and select Properties.
    11. Select the Networking tab.
    12. From the "This connection uses the following items" list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
    13. Read the current DNS setting on the lower half of the TCP/IP properties screen. If the radio button Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected you do not need to up date your DNS settings. Otherwise, please continue.
    14. Input the new Preferred DNS server of 68.94.156.1 and the Alternate DNS server of 68.94.157.1.
    15. Click OK.
    ================================= end quote.
So it appears I can't put screen shots in here. Well I hope you get the gist.
In fact this is a bit hosed up.
It says if you user "automatic dns" you're OK, that's opposite of my experience.
I changed to the specified DNS addresses and things seem 99.9% fixed.
I also changed my Router (wireless) settings.
If there's a survey of my experience here I'll take it.
