Down-saving CS6 or CC to CS5 breaks vector drop shadows?

My pre-press house cannot use CS6 or CC files. They have not yet upgraded all of their workstations. So, they ask us to save files as CS5 files. When I save CS6 or CC files to CS5 the vector drop shadow effects get converted to embedded raster images. Is there a way to down-save as a CS5 file that keeps these effects? I used to be able to down-save CS5 files to CS4 or CS3 without this issue.
We have to keep using CS5 for some jobs that make use of vector effects. Its really a pain.
Thanks!

I just discovered if you convert an object with a vector shadow to a SYMBOL in AI CC and then down-save to CS5 from CC the down-saved file retains the vector effects. At that point you can release it from being a symbol and edit it in CS5. Not a perfect work-around but its better than having to rebuild all the effects if you have to down-save to CS5.

  • In InDesign CS5 Vector Drop Shadows Flattening at 150dpi

If I have an InDesign Vector Element (Box or Type) with a drop shadow effect, that is not interacting with an image, I am getting 150dpi or under image created for the shadow when flattened (I am exporting a PDF1.3 out of InDesign for the flattening). This is not consistent at all, one machine will do it at 300dpi, so there is definitely a setting. We have tried all the usual suspects, Flattening Settings, Spread Overrides, Export Settings, etc, but we cannot find the control. If an image is put in, which interacts with the shadow, the resulting image from flattening will match the image resolution. Has anyone else seen this issue?

Went through all the settings, including this and they match. Even tried creating another Flattener Preset increasing the Line Art and Text Resolution and the Gradient and Mesh Resolution, and still got the same results.

  • Illustrator CS6 Rasterizes Drop Shadows When Saving Back to CS

I am working with Illustrator CS6 and when I save a file to an earlier version - CS3 or CS - that has a drop shadow effect, the effect gets rasterized. Drop shadows are not new to this latest version of Illustrator so shouldn't they still be editable when saving to a version above CS?
    Thank you.

Actually Gaussian Blur was indeed updated in CS6 to be much faster. All drop shadows use Gaussian Blur, as do outer glows and inner glows. If you need live drop shadows and glows in CS5, then apply them in CS5.

  • Can a PDF saved from cs6 be opened in cs5 with layers intact?

I have a client who insists on receiving final files as PDFs saved as Illustrator Default with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities ticked. This wasn't an issue until I upgraded to cs6. In cs6 I'm saving the native file as cs5, and then saving as PDF with the following options:
The client is able to open the PDF in cs5 but the layers are all flattened into a single layer. Is there way to Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities for any version other than cs6?

The only way is to downsave the AI file to a CS5 and export from there. There are too many changes from CS5 to CS6 for this not to happen.

  • Downsaving, Backsaving, or Legacy Saving CS6 to CS5 Rasterization (a bug)

I have this image that I've created for a client in Adobe Illustrator CS6 on WIndows. Their designer has CS5.5 on a Mac. The image contains the following:
    Multiple artboards
    Inner Glow
    Layer transparency
    Transparent Gradients
    Strokes on gradients
    blends
    multiple clipping masks
When I try to save the file back to CS5 I get a rasterized image in an Illustrator file instead of what I'm expecting. Has anyone else had this problem?

    What's really happening:
The problem is the strokes on the gradients because that's a new feature in AI CS6.
    Work-around:
When I expand appearance on the strokes on the gradients in CS6, it makes the gradient strokes into mesh gradients (not completely desireable or intuitive. However when I and save back to cs5 format it opens as expected in CS 5.5.
Original: If you have to do this, you can still adjust the thickness of the now expanded stroke (technically a mask over a gradient) by selecting the path and using object path offset path.
Correction: The option to use offset path is not the same as it would be on a mask containing a gradient. If the stroke is of a complex shape (eg. a stroke with rounded tips containing a gradient.) it will more than likely have to be redrawn to preserve the appearance.
Suggested work-flow: If you know something will ultimately be saved back to a different version
    Suggestion for Adobe:
Because the PDF interpreter in the older version of CS5 doesn't understand the new feature it throws an error. If you copy from CS6 and paste to CS5.5 it will show you the error, then CS 5.5 expands all of the editable features in the file. What should happen is when someone saves back to CS5 from CS6 in the plug-in it should expand appearance on all strokes that contain gradients to be an outlined path container for the stroke with the gradient as the fill. Converting to mesh gradients is highly undesireable on spot color images.

  • CS6 upgrade for photoshop CS5 gives errors

I recently purchased your Photoshop CS6 upgrade.  I had been using Photoshop CS5 previously.  When I entered my serial number I got a message stating that no qualifying product can be found on my computer.  In the product drop down box I found and selected CS5 but when I enter the serial number of my CS5 Master Collection (which Photoshop was part of it) I get a error saying that serial number is not for a qualifying product.
    What should I do?

You cannot upgrade a component of a Creative Suite to the next version - which is what it sounds like you're attempting.
e.g. you cannot upgrade to Photoshop CS6 using the Photoshop CS5 from Master Collection CS5.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/faq.html#upgrade-eligibility
"Am I eligible for upgrade pricing from an earlier Creative Suite edition to an individual CS component?
No. Adobe does not offer upgrade pricing for customers wishing to move from a suite edition to an individual CS component. For complete upgrade information for the product you are interested in, consult the upgrade eligibility chart on that product's buying guide page."
From Master Collection CS5, you can only upgrade to a CS6 Suite (does not have to be Master Collection CS6).
If Photoshop CS6 is all you want then either purchase a full version of CS6 or consider joining the Cloud.

  • ACR processing in CS6 much slower than CS5

A big advantage of hosting ACR in 64 bit CS5 vs in bridge was that then ACR would process multiple images at once when saving them to jpg which would reduce processing times by 30% or more. For some reason this doesn't seem to be the case with CS6. I just did a short test and CS6 won't process multiple images at once, and was 33% slower than CS5 at saving a batch of 5dmkii images to jpeg.
Has anyone else noticed this? Hopefully this limitation is due to beta status and the final release of ACR will be fully optimized for 64bit processing.

It seems strange that their is hardly any improvement in 64 bit cs6 speed vs 32 bit cs5.    I agree, gpu support for acr would great!

Bridge in CS5 was 32 bit only, and I observed the 32 bit converter as run by Bridge (or Photoshop 32 bit) wouldn't exercise all the cores, so the way I interpret your numbers is as follows:
    1.  ACR7 is 50% slower than its predecessor (34.25 seconds when run in Photoshop 64 bit vs. 22.59).
    2.  Bridge is now 64 bit, so you're running the same code in both cases, which is why you're seeing essentially the same number in Bridge as Photoshop.

  • How to recover artwork saved outside the artboard from CS5?

To put it simply, I worked on some logo designs at home using CS6.
The next day at my friends office I opened the file up in CS5.
Now it read the Document as a PDF form (not sure why). I had 3 pages of Artwork that I had to open seperately.
I saved 2 of the Docs as new CS5 docs and cotinued working on my logo development on the original CS6 doc opened in CS5.
I continued to work off the original file outside the artboard parameters without 'saving as'.
I have spent 5 hours working on designs and kept saving the file until home time.
When I then tried to open the same file that had registered the save (time shown) and file size increased I was left with 1 Artboard and no surrounding designs.
I know illustrator very well however this process has stumped me.
I know my work is in there somewhere due to the file size and fonts it keeps asking for that I used outside the artboard.
    Please help.

Thank guys. I know there was only a slim chance but I was hoping for a miracle.
    Cheers

  • Is there a way to set your Illustrator CC to always save down to CS6 as a default?

At our company a select few of us have been upgraded to CC and most are still on CS6. Is there a way to set saving down to CS6 as a default so we don't need to remember to Save as every time?

    No.

  • Unable to open cs6 psd files in cs5?

I am a student, My school uses CS5 - I have CS6 - I am unable to open my homework at school (cs6 wont open on cs5) But I can still open school work at home (cs5 can be opened in cs6)
I need to know (please) if there is a way to save my cs6 psd files as an earlier version so I don't have to keep redoing my work - Please help!

    CS6 files are backward compatible.
But when opening in an older version, you can get warnings about text layers, or lose some effects that are specific to CS6 (like strokes on shape layers).

  • How to open Premiere CS6 files with Premiere CS5.5

Hi, I've ran into a problem I recently got the Premiere CS6 trial and had done some projects on it that I started in CS5.5, but now the trial expired and many of my projects are stuck as CS6 files. Luckly I was able to put the trial on one of my older computers so i can still access the files for now but its extremely slow and the rendering takes forever so I dont want to render out any projects on that.
I know that Premiere is not backwards compatible but is there anyway to export the file or convert it to a CS5.5 file? I need to export the project by tommorrow and my old computer wont have it done by then. I will be buying CS6 in a couple weeks here but right now I cannot afford to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the original project files from CS5.5. You had to enter a new file name for CS6, so using the CS5.5 names will solve it under CS5.5. It will not solve the editing you did, that is lost (unless you dare to modify the XML files).

  • Premiere cs6 won't load cs5 file

This project contained a sequence that could not be opened.  No sequence preview presetfile or codec could be associated with this sequence type.
The project was created in CS5.  I get this messge again, again, and again, even after CS6 DID work once.  CS6 is supposed to load CS5-created premiere project and  sometimes converts it, etc.  Then won't load the converted project!!!!!
    I am using creative cloud.
    What is going on?

Jim, Thanks for the quick reply.  The problem is indeed a missing codec, viz. intra100.  There is a related problem that Adobe apparently has not solved: A/c to a technician.    CS5 overwrites CS6 files and vice-versa (in creative cloud anyway).  So,  I am constantly having to re-activate CS6  because of using CS5 for things like markers.
The tech said they would be working on it (two or three months ago).  Have you heard anything on this issue?
I am wondering if there is any simple way just to copy this particular coded for the moment.
    Thanks again.
