Downfalls to / Annoyances of Safari 5

I have noticed a few changed with Safari 5 that are annoying to me as a web developed. First, when you refresh a page with post data, the data is lost. It doesn't ask you if you want to resubmit the form or anything like Safari 4 (This may also be as a result of the latest version, 5.0.3). Second, if you use the back button to navigate back to a page, all of the input data and javascript actions disappear as if the page was refreshed, unlike in previous versions. Is there any way to disable these changes? Maybe it's just me.
Thanks

HI and welcome...
It doesn't ask you if you want to resubmit the form or anything like Safari 4
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences - Security
At the bottom of that window select the box next to: *Ask before sending a non-secure form from a secure website*
Quit Safari (Command + Q) relaunch Safari.

  • Annoyances in Safari 5.1 (Lion): Tabs, Resume, Reading List, etc.

Having recently updated to Lion, I am confronted with several annoyances in Safari. Considering how much — and how faithfully — I use Safari, these cannot stand!!! Please help me get old functionality back!
1.) Tabs now insert themselves left-to-right from their originating page. I prefer the old way, adding them to the end of the tab bar from the right. I am a big user of tabs and this is completely disrupting my workflow.
2.) Resume seems to be stuck on for my Safari. Although I disabled it in System Preferences > General, Safari opens up the previous page when I quit. Help me go back to the way it was where Quit meant Quit, and a new launch opens the home page.
3.) How can we get rid of Reading List in the bookmarks bar? I don't like that eyeglass icon taking up precious space. If I want to use this feature, I'll use the keyboard shortcut or menu item. Please tell me there's a way to remove the icon? (similarly, it's probably a good idea to remove the Top Sites or Bookmarks icon)
4.) Downloads folder as separate window. I prefer the way it used to be, where you could drag a link to a media file right onto the Downloads window, and you could show/hide it using a keyboard shortcut. Is there a shortcut to open the Downloads list? Is there a way to pop it out as a floating Window?
I'm sure I'll think of more, but for now please please help me run Safari the way I am used to!

Not that it matters, but I've figured out the twisted logic in Tabs.
For any individual page, every tab you open will appear just next to the source (let's call it source A), but will spread in the traditional manner, with new ones appearing directly to the right. So all the tabs launched from source A will follow in the order which you opened them.
However, if you had another tab open during that time, let's call it source B, that tab is now way down the line. Here's a ghetto-*** diagram:
    Before:
    Source A - Source B
    After:
    Source A - Tab A1 - Tab A2 - Tab A3 - Tab A4 - Source B - Tab B1 - Tab B2
And I presume what we all want is the classic way:
    Before:
    Source A - Source B
    After:
    Source A - Source B - Tab A1 - Tab A2 - Tab A3 - Tab A4 - Tab B1 - Tab B2

  • Small annoyance with safari

some website have menus that rely on a selection from another menu in the same page, i.e. catagory menu and sub catagory. i tried with demoniod.com
safari CRASHES, for a few seconds because of this, when i tried it in firefox it didnt crash, nor did it have any delay,

I'm not surprised that you find a third party application that or website that doesn't work with Safari since there are still websites that optimize for other browsers instead of Safari. So report the page to Apple using the Bug button or "Report Bugs to Apple..." from the Safari menu, but for the record, I have no trouble accessing the demonoid.com website but I'm not going to register just to test it out.

  • Is there a global way to turn off restore features?

The restore features are quite problematic.  Is there a way to turn this off globally?  Every time I open Textmate, or Preview, etc with a new document, I get window(s) with previous documents.  When I log back in, if I forgot to hit the logout-sabotaging check-box, all the previous applications re-open.  It is driving up my blood pressure.
Is the a defaults command or something I can do?
I can't believe this kind of "feature" would be implemented without some sort of obvious preference control, but I have searched everywhere to no avail.  Please help!  Between this and the heavy resource consumption, I'm almost ready to do what I never in 10 years of using OS X would have considered:  reinstlaling the previous version of the OS.

Thanks.  I found the 10,000 other postings after I posted this (the new search utility auto-dumped me into a new post).
Two additional defaults commands I found turn off the remaining annoyances in Safari and Preview:
defaults write com.apple.Preview ApplePersistenceIgnoreState -bool TRUE
defaults write com.apple.Safari ApplePersistenceIgnoreState -bool TRUE
Now if I can find one to permanently uncheck that check-box you get on log-out, I will be (relatively) happy.

  • Major annoyance - Safari switching tabs/windows after page load

When I cmd-click on a link to open a page in a new tab, it starts to load the page. If I switch tabs or windows before the page is loaded, it will switch back to that tab/window when the page load is complete.
Who thought this would be a good idea?!? This is the kind of impossibly poor user interface that I expect when I run Windows. Why has it infected my Mac? I DO NOT WANT MY SOFTWARE CHANGING MY INTERFACE ON ME!!! When I bring a tab or window to the front, I expect it to STAY in the front!!!!!
PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING SANE, FIX THIS NOW APPLE!!!

BTW, this does not happen all the time - only on certain pages. A good example is the Washington Post. Click on an article, then switch to a different tab/window before the page completes loading. When the page load completes, it will switch your tab/window, bringing the article to the front. Very annoying.
I suppose if could be an issue with the site using some severely twisted JavaScript. However, I have never seen this behavior before in Safari until very recently, and it does not happen in FireFox.

  • Safari annoyance - creation/modification dates are reset on downloads

When downloading files (images for example) by dragging them from a Safari window to a Finder window/drive, the files' creation date and modification date is reset to the date/time it is downloaded; this also happens if you choose "Save Image" from the contextual menu.
It seems the only way Safari will preserve the original creation date and modification date of downloads is by option clicking a hyperlink that points to the file. Anyone know if there is any other way?
Power Mac G4 dual 867 Mirrored Drive Doors   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks to the sharp folks at macosxhints.com I discovered that file creation/mod dates are preserved by dragging image files to Safari's Downloads folder, so I guess it suffices for my needs...still, drag-and-drop to the Finder should do the same.
Also you can paste the file's URL into the address bar and hit option-return, or option-double click the file's URL in the Activity window.

  • Safari and download validation annoyance?

I download a lot of files that end in .package, that are used in a game I play. They aren't applications. Is there any way to tell Download Validation that .package files are okay, and have it stop telling me, "x.package may contain an application" every time I download one?

It's going to be either all or nothing. If you want the warning to go away you can activate such using SAFT or Taboo. Both are 3rd party plug-ins requiring the use of SIMBL.
I find SAFT to be very useful for other Safari related features too.

  • Glaring safari omissions and annoyances.

As I may have mentioned before I 've deserted my beloved opera to go with safari for more interoperability between macs.
I love safari, it's great but there are a couple of glaring omissions that no matter how many add ons I ve got (and I am using or testing 10-20 of them) I haven't found a work around for:
    1. Impossibly miniscule fonts for bookmarks. I literally need a magnifying glass for them, on my 24" imac it's impossible to sort them out with these tiny fonts, I can't fathom how bad they are going to look on the new 27" ones. PLEASE, PLEASE, tell me a way to get the fonts larger for the bookmarks, even if it means a paid app, or getting a developer to do it for me.
    2. I absolutely loved the minimum zoom function in opera. Very simple, very effective and straight forward: Set zoom to 120% then all windows load at this setting, so no more constant ctrl +. How hard is this for apple to do? This is one of the few cases where I think they are just plain idiots for not including this. Their larger macs such as the 24" and 27" are impossible to read without the zoom, why should we all be ctrl + our way a few hundred times a day?
It's insane really. I know all the minimum font and default font settings, but the former just don't work as well as the zoom and are pretty pointless unless you want most websites distorted, and the latter as far as my understanding goes just don't work on most websites. The zoom function is simply irreplaceable and there's absolutely no reason why setting this value as a default % is not an option.
Again I d love an add on for that, please tell me there is one, or someone make one for me and I ll pay them.
    Thanks!

Impossibly miniscule fonts for bookmarks. I literally need a magnifying glass for them.
<Edited by Host> the only other ways you could make everything larger is to use the Zoom function in the Universal Access section of System Preferences, or reduce the resolution of your monitor.
I absolutely loved the minimum zoom function in opera. Very simple, very effective and straight forward: Set zoom to 120% then all windows load at this setting.
You can do that in Safari, too; you've just never tried to find a solution, because it's been posted here before.
    1. Create a file named defaultzoom.css (or any name you choose, as long as you save it with a .css file extension.)
    2. Copy and paste the following:
    body {
    zoom: 150%;
*(Note: This 150% value is used as an example only; you should enter the value you want to use.)*

  • Safari 4 scrolling annoyance

    Hi,
When browsing long pages, particularly RSS, I try scrolling down but the cursor seems to 'latch on' to the scrollbar as if I am still keeping my finger on the mouse button, therefore moving the mouse makes the page scroll at a ludicrous rate and I always end up far away from the article I was reading.
I assume it's a glitch and not a 'helpful' feature - if the latter it's the worst thing Apple have done since the Mighty Mouse!
Have I explained this clearly? Does anyone else have this problem? How on Earth do I get rid of it?
    Cheers!

    Guess not

  • Safari 6.0 crash when right clicking a link and choosing open in new tab

Hi all,  just a general question.  I admit i did not search the forums yet.  Hopefully this little annoyance can be resolved.
When using safari on say CNN.COM i'll right click on a link and choose Open in new tab.  safari randomly disappears.  no crash warnings,  just gone.  I can open it right up and be fine sometimes all day.   This has happened to me about 5x since ML was released (i wiped my laptop the day it came out)
This has happened on a couple of different website at different times of the day.  only safari was running. No other apple apps have this issue.
I have a MacBook Pro from earily '08 type 4,1
i have only apple software on this machine
i do have adobe flash installed v11.3 updated today.
    i do have lastpass enabled
    i do have ad-block disabled
While i'm waiting for help from you guys i'll disable all addon's and try to remove adobe to see if that is the issue.  Is there any other steps i can try like delete .plist file or maybe even trying a new user profile.  I am a IT professional and am not afraid to get my hands dirty trying to get this resovlved.
    Thanks in advance.
P.S. i'll search the forums too and if i see a similar post i'll remove this one.
    Bill Siegfried.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • IMac shuts down when using Safari 2.0.4

My iMac shuts down when I visit certain websites such as Pogo or video sites. Took it to the Apple store and of course the problem wouldn't replicate there. They kept it to check out the scripts and logs to see if they could find a problem - without success; although they did suggest my house is haunted. Brought it home and it quit again.
We thought perhaps we were getting interference from other wireless devices and unplugged our cordless phone which worked for a day. The computer always turns back on so its more of an annoyance than a real problem, but I'm baffled.
It also happened once when I was downloading from the iTunes store, but is most prevalent with Safari.
We have wireless internet connected via ethernet to an Airport Express.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi Barry -
Yes I do live near a ghost town (kinda) - Virginia City, NV. And I did tell any unwanted visitors to leave.
Actually, in the last year, they have replaced the Super drive, power supply, inverter and logic board. The only reason I'm not thinking power issues is that it only happens when I'm in Safari or iTunes. I would use Firefox except I've got java issues with that. I can (and do) use the machine for other things all day long without problems. I can use Safari all day long as long as I'm not playing on Pogo or certain video sites. Maybe Pogo is haunted?
It also doesn't happen on my husband's iMac on the other side of the house. Is there something that could cause enough interference to actually make the machine shut down? Oh, the antennae for the satellite TV and internet are on the roof directly above me, if that would have anything to do with it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do I stop Safari from Changing Visited Links Color's?

I recently switched from Firefox to Safari since I find Safari much faster. I do have one annoyance though. When I click a link (especially in forums) and revisit a page with that link, Safari is changing the link's color. Firefox did this too, it changed visited links from blue to purple.
I would like to set it somehow so Safari doesn't change the color of visited links at all. Is this possible? When I googled I saw many different posts about using custom made CSS style sheets. I just want to get an 'official' or more relevant answer since many opf those posts were years old. I'm using the latest Safari.
    Thanks!

AFAIK, it's not possible with preferences, per se. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7183566 and http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/stylesheets/csslinks.html for possible hints. You might also investigate modifying one of Safari's css files, inside the Safari app—left as an exercise, with no guarantees that you won't cripple something.

  • Toxic tabs in Safari 5.1 OS 10.7.1

Safari has just crashed 'unexpectedly'. I say 'just', actually about 3 hours ago and I've been wrestiling with the problem since then.
Restarting Safari, it works OK with the exception of three tabs that are remaining from just before the crash. If I try to do anything to close or make active any of those tabs, Safari crashes again. I have a fourth tab open, on this or any new tabs I open, everything works normally as far as I can see as long as I ignore the three bad tabs.
All three bad tabs are ebay pages, past experience tells me ebay page crashes are often related to Flash. I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling Flash, with no benefit. On revisiting the same ebay pages on a new, working tab, all work fine. I've tried all the hints about Safari crashes (including deleting cache & history files) I can find elsewhere in the forum with no success.
I can 'Quit' apparently normally as long as I stay on the working tab. Is there no way of forcing Safari to restart without attempting to reload pages on the previous tabs? If not, that would seem to be a major design flaw.
I'd be grateful if anybody has any suggestions to offer.
    Andy

Sorry to have wasted your time, I've answered my own question in the last few minutes - just realized I can simply disable the 'Restore windows when quitting & re-opening apps' feature which seems to have done the trick. I found the feature more of an annoyance than a benefit generally, so it's no loss!
Doesn't explain the original crash but I'll worry about this when it happens again.
    Thanks,
    Andy

  • Safari not rendering Arabic text correctly

I have Safari 1.0.3 running on Mac OS 10.2.8 and it will not render Arabic text correctly. Isolated letters appear at about half the correct size, which makes pages readable but only with considerable difficulty and annoyance.
I saw some solutions here that related to removing Microsoft fonts, but I removed all fonts from Home:Library:Fonts and quite and restarted Safari, and the problem persists. I also downloaded Firefox 2.0 and the same issue occurs - with the added feature that the tab titles on Firefox also display this anomaly, whereas tab titles on Safari render Arabic correctly.
And by the way, if this issue can be resolved, can safari and other apps be got to use a font other than the extremely ugly and hard-to-read default?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Thanks Tom. The problem though is not that letters
that are meant to be connected are coming out
isolated; letters that are meant to be isolated, e.g.
initial alif, waw, ra and final letters after alif,
waw ra, are displaying way too small.
    Sorry I misunderstood the problem.
Do you think it is worth trying your troubleshooting
tip no. 18? And do you have any idea what sort of
issue could be behind it that it would affect Firefox
    too?
Yes, you may as well try no. 18. That tip, which really has no logic to it, reflects the fact that voodoo is sometimes required to get Jaguar to display Arabic correctly in browsers. Panther was a tremendous improvement in that regard.

  • Content jittering in Safari when using linked anchors to scroll.

I recently launched a preview version of the website I've been designing in Adobe Muse CC 2014.2: http://spudniksavannah.com/beta-0.1.html
A ton of the feedback that I've been getting from Safari users is that content appearing on screen is very "shaky/jittery" initially as they navigate through the page using the menu (hyperlinked anchor buttons) or by scrolling (using this scroll wheel anchor widget, downloaded from: Use mouse scroll wheel to navigate between Muse anchors – Adobe Muse Widget Directory).
At first I was concerned it was the widget that was causing the problem, but after removing it I noticed the problem still occurs when you use the out-of-the-box hyperlinked anchors from Adobe Muse.
I'm a Google Chrome user first and foremost, and the scrolling looks fine in my browser.  I didn't know this problem even existed prior to receiving feedback from my testing group but apparently the site features a similar problem with Firefox browsers as well.
Once the site is launched I expect all sorts of users with a variety of different experience levels (and browsers) to visit the page, so this could develop from a relatively minor annoyance to me, into a fairly significant distraction for others.
Any suggestions/insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chris
