Downgrade from Vista to XP (ThinkPad X301) - are there benefits here?

Hi,
i wonder:
whether it is worthwhile migrating to Windows XP from Vista?
what profits are? disk space? boot time? performance? speed? power utility?
I am interested in your opinions, what you would do?
stay? (vista) downgrade? (XP) or wait? (for Windows 7)

That is incorrect.  The new version of TVSU was released today, and reports are coming in on the TVT board that it's working fine.

  • Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom after downgrading from Vista

    Hi everybody.
I successfully downgraded my T61p from Vista to XP Pro SP2 using the downgrade cd-roms send by Lenovo.
Everything seems to work well. I downloaded all drivers. No problem.
But I recently installed a rather old software that I frequently used on my old A31p. This software (a Microsoft program !) has automatically modified some files from XP Pro without any autorization.
Once it was done, I was asked by the system to insert the original Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom to repair this modification.
Of course, the (Vista to XP) downgrade cd-rom set was not recognized by the Thinkpad as the original XP set.
    An original cd-rom which I finally don't have !
I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful.
Where could I find the XP Pro SP2 cd-rom corresponding to the downgraded system ?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
    Regards.

    Thinkpad A31p - T42p - T61p - TP Tablet

    James,
    thanks for your answer.
But I wrote on my first post "I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful."
Thus, I don't see any difference between an original Microsoft Windows XP2 Pro SP2 version cd-rom and one created by burning a downloaded version of the OS. An original was not recognized, what would a copy do ?
If possible, it might be probably better to create an XP Pro SP2 cd-rom from the "Rescue and Recovery" files which were reinstalled when downgrading from Vista to XP. (I hate the word "downgrade" : while I was doing it, I had the feeling I was upgrading my Thinkpad !)
I have been using for several years (and still use) an A31p (Since 2002, 8 to 10 hours a day) and a T42p. IMHO, the T61p is the same category of "great" notebooks. Thinkpads are really the best notebooks I have ever used. I noted no significant difference between IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads.

  • Soundcard does not after downgrade from Vista to Xp on Equium L350

Hi I have an Eqium L350 Laptop and i just recently downgraded from Vista to XP.
All other drivers work fine apart from my Sound Card.
Does anyone know where to get the drivers i need for my laptop?
I know what the drivers are called
VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM and SIS 7018 Audio Driver
Only problem is i dont know what ones work with my Toshiba L350-10L
There is different versions of these drivers.Does anyone know anyone which one it is?
    Thanks in advance :)

Realtek do not have the sound card drivers are you sure it is a Realtek card?
I have seen L350 -10L models with the Realtek ALC268.
But i have installed the Realtek ALC268 Audio Codecs and when i check on Driver Detective and Driver Max it displays the ones i mentioned when i started this topic.
If you can could you maybe find me a link to both drivers that will install and work with my model of laptop from Toshiba if it is not too much trouble for you?
    Thanks alot in advance :D

  • Help on small issues after WinXP downgrade from Vista

    Lenovo 3000 v200
I recently downgraded from Vista to WinXP Professional, and I must say I'm much happier with XP.
Some issues on the install: although I downloaded all drivers from the Lenovo site, the install didn't work from my usb floppy drive.
It recognized the floppy on the F6 portion of the install, but then later it kept asking for the disk to be inserted (it was already in the drive).  Workaround was to install by changing to "compatibility mode" in the BIOS, and after install, loading all drivers and changing BIOS back to SATA.
All features of the laptop appear to work perfectly; camera, fingerprint reader, wifi, etc.
HOWEVER: in the device manager, there are 3 yellow exclamation points in the "Other Devices" section, and each of them is labeled "Base System Device."   Does anyone know what these are?  Why are they not recognized as specific devices?  LenovoCare doesn't recognize them either, and I have no idea what drivers to attempt to install for mystery devices.
Also, "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" won't install.  I have the current driver, and I've tried updating from LenovoCare, but no luck.  As I don't use a modem, this seems irrelevant, but I'd like to install it just the same if possible.
Finally, the LenovoCare recognized a need to install a "Hotkey" update, and it claims to successfully install, but everytime I run LenovoCare it says I need it again.  Any comments or observations?
Again, the computer works just fine even with these small issues.  In fact, it is better than fine; it is a joy to use and a real speed demon with XP instead of Vista.  So I'm not trying to do any rocket science or potentially screw up a very nice situation, but I am trying to iron out these small nuisances.
Thanks to all of you who consider my trivial problems.  I really appreciate having knowledgable individuals like yourselves help out a very modestly skilled, but reasonably ambitious user.
    Cheers,
    Fred

    Hello Fred,
I created a blog on this forum called.... "I Explain How To Downgrade From Vista To XP Successfully On A 3000 N100 Laptop" Locate this message and read through it. Try the "Auto Detect This System" I Talk about. It will load the latest drivers and the latest...BIOS..... for your particular model if you have not already upgraded it. You did not mention if you had upgraded your BIOS...... if your running an  "OLD" version.... THIS..... could be your problem.

  • Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?

Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?
    I have a Sony HDR-FX1 that records in HDV 1440 x 1080
I have already captured the footage to miniDV tape.
Can the intensity card get the full 1920 x 1080 video ?
I now use Premiere to capture my video and my HDV is in mpeg2 and my SD is in DV type 2 AVI
What format does the intensity card capture at ?
Are there other ways to capture that would make the footage better.
From what I have read allot of people have had problems with these cards.
Im just looking for the best way to get the footage off my camera with the best resolution.
    Thanks:  Glenn

    Glenn,
I have posted this before in the PC Buying Guide (post #23 and later), but have a look at this diagram:
The problem is that once recorded to tape, the material is compressed to MPEG and there is no way to get the data back, that were lost during compression. The only thing you achieve is that you lose device control, lose all timecode information, lose all metadata like date and timestamp and exposure data and lose the capability of scene detection. There are no gains to compensate the losses.
Compare it to a glass of orange juice, that was made by heavily compressing oranges. How do you think you can reconstruct the original oranges that the juice came from? Were there 4 large oranges or 6 small ones or a mixture? Were they light colored or were they dark or a mixture of light and dark?
BlackMagic in their marketing may lead you to believe otherwise, but the truth is they can only guess at how many oranges were used, their size and color. It is nothing more than a guess.

  • Are there benefits to buying an Unlocked phone?

Are there benefits to the above question? I hate being LOCKED into anything. Like my brother asked " Why buy unlocked and go with no contract"? I really coul not give him an answer he liked the stupid SOB

Thanks for all the info. Yeah I did buy a no-contract phone. So I'm aware of the difference. Just you hear all these guys saying how nice it is to have an un-locked or jail-broken phone but they never go into the reasons, well I guess they do. I guess but I still don't se the benefit other than the ones you and others here have given.
    Thanks again,

  • T400 downgraded from Vista to XP resulting in system freeze after 10 min activity

    Hi,
I just purchased a T400 and have gone through the process of (re)grading the OS from Vista Business to XP. From the moment the setup dialogue for XP started (machine name, date, users etc), the whole systems freezes after working the machine for around 10-15 min. First, I suspected it to be a mouse freeze, but I get no reponse from neither the keyboard nor mouse (not sure if it is a complete system freeze or to do with mouse/keyboard drivers). Even the clock in the bottom right corner stops running.
To get the system going I need to force the system to reboot using the power on/off button.
The XP restore disc I used came from Lenovo with the computer, and I have followed the instructions by point. Do any of you recognize this problem? And more importantly, know how to deal with it

    Hi,
I posted a message on the forum 5 days ago, and got no replies.  I agree the  problem description might be a bit vague, so here we  go again:
I recently purchased a T400 (model 2765, 21g) with the XP downgrade option (the MS Windows XP Conversion Kit containing 2 CD's: Lenovo's Rescue &  Recovery plate + XP product recovery plate with SP2). During the installation of XP (the end part where you set up your user) the computer freezes (no response from keyboard). I power the machine off and on again, and the installation continues as it were. I finish the installation and the computer is set. After additional 10 min the computer freezes again in the same style.
I imagine it to be a powermanagement disagreement between MS system and Lenovos powermanagement system, and set every parameter to be always ON and full performance ( I am running on AC). This time the freeze doesn't happen for an hour. I then begin to reinstall the powermanagement drivers and the general drivers for this particular model running XP (from Lenovos drivers Matrix), and now I am looking at two hour before each freeze. That is if I don't plug in any external hard drives (then the system can crash within 15 min or an hour), and we turn a blind eye to the occational freeze after 10 min on the first boot of the day .
At some point I suspected there to be a conflict with the existing SATA drivers that I also have reinstalled for the occation.  Still the system is NOT stable.
And the frustrating thing is that I have no clue why. The sympthom is always the same, complete screen freeze ( I do not know if the system is active behind (no hard drive running)), that can only be cured with a forced boot.
If any of you reconize this, please assist me to a solution. I have by now installed all programs to my liking including all MS updates (SP3 etc), and hope there is a way to get to the core without a complete reinstall (or worse, return to the realm of Vista)

  • Are there benefits to streaming Hinted H264?

Are there any benefits to streaming hinted h264 files?  I'm creating h264 mp4 files using Telestream's Episode and all of the streaming presets are hinted, so the files are twice as large.  When I normally create h264 in quicktime or Adobe Media Encoder CS4 they're not hinted, so I'm wondering how flash media (interactive server 3) handles hinted files.  I'm assuming it ignores the hinted tracks.

Thanks for all the info. Yeah I did buy a no-contract phone. So I'm aware of the difference. Just you hear all these guys saying how nice it is to have an un-locked or jail-broken phone but they never go into the reasons, well I guess they do. • Missing Drivers - Downgraded from Vista Home to Windows XP Pro SP3 - Lenovo 3000 N100 Notebook

    Hey,
I have a lenovo 3000 N100 as well and recently downgraded to Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3.
However, I have a lot of hardware drivers missing (yellow question mark) -
    1) Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
    2) Base System Device (listed thrice so I'm guessing there are three separate drivers needed)
    3)Network Controller
    4) Video Controller
    5) Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
I have no audio or wireless either. Lastly, I have spoken to lenovo and they asked me to download some drivers from lenovo.com. I did and also downloaded every possible driver for XP on the lenovo site but still had no luck.
I would really appreciate any help/guidance you can offer. I have exausted all resources at this point.
My email is xxxxxxxxxxxxx so feel free to reach out to me there as well.
    Thanks a ton.

  • D10 Downgrade from Vista to XP Pro 64 Bit?

I was thinking about downgrading? Anybody have any experiences with Windows XP Pro 64Bit on the D10s. Was it worth the time and effort to downgrade.
    Please let me know.

I just upgraded to 7 and boy system is very snappy. Vista was a Resource Hog Big Time, even with 16GB Of memory and two X5460 and 15k SAS Drive, now system feels much more alive. I see the running services are like half of what Vista used to run. Very cool, microsoft finally made a nice OS. I would suggest everyone should upgrade to 7, throw away Vista! All Drivers installed fine, expect for the Linksys, usb wireless card. No unknown drivers in device manager. Also, didn't have to change any settings in the Bios. Now time to learn windows all over again .

  • Can't Find Create Recovery Media Feature on T500 (XP downgrade from Vista)

Laptop is a T500 (2082-RF1), with XP Pro (sticker on bottom says Vista).
I cannot find any option to create recovery discs.
There is no Recovery option in ThinkVantage.
Doing a search for "recovery" finds only 3 files in PC Doctor folder.  None of them are launch files that I can recognize so I dare not attempt them.
How do I access (or install) the Create Recovery Media function?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Okay, for anybody else this could help...
    Go to Control Panel...
Click the Levono's System health and Diagnostics icon
and follow the flow of instructions...  you'll be led to download the Rescue and Recovery.
Now, why lenovo didn't include this with all new laptops, or make it easier to find (on the start-up screen, through ThinkVantage, etc) makes you wonder.

  • Does anyone from BT read these postings? Are there...

Reading all these posts regarding BT's latest inferior product, I've seen dozens of people leaving BT, or threatening to leave BT's broadband service. Does nobody at BT care about the number of customers they are losing, or risking losing, by the overselling and hype of a product that only works properly on their glossy TV adverts?
    It's absolutely RUBBISH!!!
On Saturday I tuned in to watch the match of the season and, no disrespect to anyone from Norwich or the midlands, Norwich V Aston Villa exclusively live on BT is hardly a challenge to Sky Sports! Anyway, needless to say, it was hassle right from the start!! Click here, click there, watch this, choose this.....my mouse has never worked so hard!!
Eventually I saw an image which may even have been the image of a football match??
I still wasn't sure if it was indeed football at the point when I gave up watching! I couldn't see a thing (apart from error messages!). I wonder why, when you click on the 'help with player' message, there is such a long list of known errors??? Didn't BT want to sort out these issuse before they launched BT Sport? After all, the only people it is going to affect are BT customers!!! Why should they bother with us?
I'm pretty sure though that the people who pay extra to watch it via Sky aren't getting a single problem with it? Maybe it's just because they are paying extra???
Maybe it's my broadband that's at fault? Maybe I'm not getting the right speeds etc?? Who provides my broadband? Of course we all know the answer to this question!!!
BT, YOU NEED TO ANSWER YOUR CUSTOMER'S CONCERNS AND GIVE US WHAT YOU CLAIM TO PROVIDE AS A 'BONUS' TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!
I wonder will BT ever reply to any of these threads? Has anyone had a reply from BT? I'd love to hear.

Not true. It works fine for me and the great majority of customers.
It's a pity that some are having difficulties. A fair number of those have found solutions here, but usually when they've posted a rational account of their problem rather than an aimless rant.

  • Are there benefits of erasing disc before upgrading from Lion to Mavrick?

A friend suggested backing up only my necessary files on my Lion based MBP, wiping the disc clean (erasing), and then installing Maverick.  He says it will clean out any old junk and make my MBP run really fast.   If true I would like to do that, but would like confirmation and suggestions on best steps to accomplish the feat.  Thanks!

Yes. On the off chance your old system is somewhat corrupted a fresh install prevents any of that from corrupting the new system. I recommend it. But, if that is not feasible to do, then be sure you do this before any change:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Are there benefits to migrating an old iMac from 10.3.9 to 10.4x .....

...... I'm giving it to my Mom. She will primarily be using email and a little bit of Sarfari for browsing and viewing pics in iPhoto. Is there a difference or should she be OK with 10.3.9?
What is the cost of going to 10.4x?
    Thanks

You might want to put a question like this on the "Panther and earlier" forums. As BDaqua points out, browsers get out of dated and older OS versions are not supported. I know this is a serious issue for people still running OS9, though apparently some browsers are out there that still work with new websites and run under OS9. Panther is nowhere near as old as OS9 so I would check on that site if this is a serious issue, especially if you were willing to move to a non-Safari browser.
The reason I say this is Tiger has become a much in demand product but Apple no longer sells it. I have seen suggestions on this website that you can still purchase it from Apple if you can convince them you aren't simply upgrading for the sake of upgrading (Apple wants you to buy Leopard if you want to do that but the problem is there are still many Macs out there in use that cannot run Leopard and hence the demand for Tiger). The only "easy" places to get Tiger are at third party retailers who can now demand a pretty penny for Tiger. I think it used to cost around $120 at Apple Store but websites are now charging $170+. Or you can join in the fray at places like e-bay, but if you do that make sure you get the black colored retail installer, not a machine-specific gray installer.
Another cost factor is if your machine requires any upgrades to hard drive, memory, etc. in order to run Tiger. Tiger doesn't require a lot more resources than Panther but if you're running marginal right now it might be a consideration. Need to know more about your computer to give an opinion on that.

  • Thinkpad 11e - Are there any 32bit drivers?

<-We have purchased several hundred 11e laptops and need to put our standard Windows 7 pro image on them.  It is a 32bit image and there doesn't appear to be drivers available.  Do 32bit drivers exist for the components of the 11e?>

    dskinner1,
why do you need systemboard manufacturer? You need the system components IDs (ven/dev, vid/pid).
The most systemboard components should work after you'll apply Intel chipset file, it's the single file for almost all modern chipsets. No problem to find wifi, grpaphics etc adapter drivers if you know their IDs.
HWiNFO, AIDA, PC Wizard diagnostic tools might help.
But I'd suggest to figure out whether the drivers are stored on laptop's drive. Usually it's the SWTOOLS folder. Also, Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update might find drivers even if they are not public accessible. If you'll get a success on the single machine you can collect downloaded drivers (packages) and prepare the image you need for others.
You can even install administrators tool for TVSU - Update Retriever.
