Downgrade HDD from Sata 3 to 2

Is there anyway to force, and limit a Sata 3 HDD to operate at Sata 2 speeds?
its a 1.0TB, 7200 HGST Travelstar
Thanks,

Johhnylane,
that would depend upon the particular HDD’s firmware. You can try looking on the HGST Web site to see if that drive has SATA II firmware support.

  • SSD HDD from R61e doesn't work in T61p

I've removed the HDD from my R61e and put it into my T61p, the computer doesn't recognise it at all. Tried another SSD HDD from another laptop of mine and same deal. Any ideas why the T61p doesn't seem to be able to run SSD HDD?The one from the R61e is a OCZ Technology Core Series v2 SATAII 2.5" Sold State Drive and the other is a Silicone Power SSD 2.5" SATA Solid State Disk 64GB.

What is the machine type and model for your T61p?
Did your T61p orginally come with just a traditional HDD or did it come with a SSD??
If your T61p came with a regular HDD, just placing the SSD drive in it will not work.. You need the storage container for the SSD
Take a look at the link below and you'll see the part number for the Storage container (12) and the part number for the SSD (13).Both parts are needed for the SSD. See types below:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68229 <--  ThinkPad T61, T61p 15.4inch (6457, 6458, 6459, 6460, 6461, 6462, 6463, 6464, 6465, 6466, 6467, 6468, 6470, 6471)
NOTICE: All T61p machines do NOT come with a SSD!!
If you T61p is listed under one of the following types, it is NOT equipped with a SSD - See below (14 inch models)
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68208 <-- ThinkPad T61, T61p 14.1inch standard screen (Type 8889, 8890, 8891, 8892, 8893, 8894, 8895, 8896, 8897, 8898, 8899, 8900, 8938, and 8939)
Only the SSD HDDs that are listed on MIGR-68229 will work with the T61p.
I listed all the models since I don't know what your machine type/model is for your unit.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • New Drives - boot Neo4 Platinum from SATA II?

I am going to re-configure my AMD 64 3200+ K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo to have 2 Hitachi T7K250 SATA II hard drives (currently PC has a single IDE drive that will be removed).  I have XP PRO original as well as SP2 on a separate disc. Can anyone suggest a course of action here?  Any experience with booting from SATA II?  I guess I could leave the IDE drive in place simply to hold the OS and put the 2 SATA II drives in for data.

Quote from: Kaplan on 28-June-05, 01:30:10
Those drives "will be" SATA I until you download an utility from the Hitachi website. So they have to be manually configured to be SATA II.
OIC, I am running a T7K250 250GB Sata II Hiitachi as boot drive now. Hardware manager show it is set at Sata I 1.5
    If I manually configured it with the Hitachi utility,i.e. boot from DOS as instructed in the website;
    Hitachi web site does not say it must be configure before fresh installation of OS or it can be configure when OS is already installed on the drive;
Neither does Hitachi say any thing about configuring a OS installed drive.
Any effect with my installed Windows XP Pro on the HDD?
Willl it be able to boot again? Please help & advise, thanks!!!
By the way I am using MSI K8N Platinum SLi mobo.

    Hi:
You have to load the applicable SATA AHCI or RAID driver either by slipstreaming them, or by using the F6 key and installing the driver from a USB floppy disk drive.
See this guide for how to slipstream the drivers.  Read the intel section and then follow the instructions in the downloadable document to slipstream all of the drivers.

  • Mainboard PM8M-V cannot boot from SATA

Mainboard PM8M-V does not have BOOT FROM SATA in the BIOS settings. In fact nowhere in the entire bios SATA is mentioned.
The SATA HDD is properly partitioned. Windows is installed on it, but it boots from an IDE HDD and then continues to load from the SATA.
I tried to set the bios to boot from SCSI, but in vain.
I checked if there is a bios update, but the MSI website linked me to Live Update 5, which even cannot find drivers for the mainboard, not to speak for a bios update.
The version of the BIOS is
    Manufacturer : Phoenix Technologies, LTD
    Version : 6.00 PG
    Date : 03/23/2005 (mm/dd/yyyy)
    HELP!

    The boot options are:
    Floppy, LS120, IDE0,SCSI,CDROM,IDE1,IDE2,IDE3,ZIP100,USB-FDD,USB-CDROM,USB-HDD,LAN,DISABLED
I tried to remove the IDE HDD (also no USB drives were connected) while installing windows, it won't boot anyway.
Even if windows did not write correctly the MBR (well, I used the repair console to with FIXMBR and FIXBOOT), the BIOS should probably say something like "No boot sector", but it just hangs.
After that I installed with an IDE HDD connected.
Presuming that "as i recall boards of yours age listed all drives as ide" is true, shouldn't I have IDE5, since there are 4 IDE channels anyway? I will try all the IDE options, anyway.
I did not understand this question "is the make and size of the sata in that list"?
Quote from: Henry on 06-July-12, 07:31:06
It should ID the drive by model number or at least by brand & size as Wonkanoby said, at least it does on newer MBs.
Some options of the device are shown during boot (some RAID adjustments), but it is not displayed anywhere in the BIOS setup.
Also, on most bioses during oot a message is displayed "Press key XXX for boot options", but this one does not display something like this. Any clue if there could be such a key? F1 and F8 do not work.

  • I have a hdd from late 2009 that I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd.  Do I need to buy a new copy of mountain lion to install on the ssd?  If not, then what is the procedure to transfer?

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

  • I need to decrypt my factory hdd from my macbook pro.

I had removed my factory HDD from my laptop to replace it with a larger HDD. I placed the factory HDD in a case to use as an external drive, however, I can not get access to any of my files. I get an error saying the data is encrypted and i do not have permissions to access it.
I have verified that FileVault and all firewalls are off, and all passwords have been removed.
    Any other ideas?
    TIA

Put the drive back in the system and take the encryption off. You can't do that when it is installed externally.

  • Is it possible to install a 160 GB Toshiba slim-fit HDD from an iPod Classic 2009 model into a iPod 5th Gen Late-2006 model that originally had a 30 GB Toshiba drive?

Is it possible to install a 160 GB Toshiba slim-fit HDD from an iPod Classic 2009 model into a iPod 5th Gen Late-2006 model that originally had a 30 GB Toshiba drive?
I have had my 30 GB iPod video for about 7 years, it was a gift and has served me well. Unfortunately it was in my pocket when I brushed up against a very powerful magnet which latched onto the unit and scrambled the hardware. Sad iPod icon.
I was told I probably need to replace the HD in order to get it back to working order. What I am wondering is, would I be able to replace it with a larger capacity drive so long as I got a unit that was slim enough to fit into the casing?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? http://gigaom.com/2011/07/26/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
Which Windows version are you trying to install? If I remember right, you can't use windows 8 on these older machines.
Other than that it's hard to say what could have gone wrong. I can only suggest going through the steps again carefully and making sure everything worked the way it should.
Have a look at this article too for a slighly more verbose instruction on making a drive bootable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/

Can I Install Windows 7 on my portable HDD from Mountain lion ? And how i need to do it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Because of a Microsoft restriction, Windows can't be installed on an external drive (there are workarounds, but you need Windows). Apart from that, Boot Camp only works with the hard drive where you have installed OS X, so you can't use it to install Windows on an external drive

    Hi all,
I want to know how to downgrade rpd from obiee 11.1.1.5 to obiee 10.1.3.4.
    please share the valuable links.
    Thanks.

First, you will have to completely uninstall 11g, see steps below:
    http://obiee911.blogspot.com/2013/01/uninstalling-obiee-11g-instance-on.html
This should be followed by installing 10g, and then applying 10g patches to reach 10.1.3.4.1 version. I hope you have all the right 10g installation files available. Im not sure if you can download them from Oracle anymore, please check before proceeding.

Isn't this your 2nd post on this? Did you intel rapid storage (raid controller)? Are you able to see the drives in there? Did you set them up as simple drives or w/er you want?
Did you check in disk manager and assign a drive letter?
The directions for how to do this are in your manual towards the end.
The As Media controller ports 7&8 are SATA III, that is what I use for my storage HDD.

You will need to perform an Internet Recovery or be able to boot the computer using a Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later DVD. For the former:
Restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys until you see a globe appear in the gray startup screen. This may take a little while so be patient. You need to have an internet connection for this to work - preferably using Ethernet.
After a fairly long period of time - 15 minutes or more - the recovery screen will appear. Select Disk Utility from the main menu, and click on the Continue button.
    1. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    3. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    5. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    6. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Install OS X from the main menu and click on the Continue button. Follow the onscreen instructions to install OS X onto the internal drive.

  • Partition my HDD from 2 to 1.

If I partition my HDD from 2 back to 1 HDD will I lose my files in the my 2nd HDD?
I am out of room on my start up disk and have to set my partition back. I was trying to give my first HDD more GB but it won't allow me to...
I would rather just add more GB to my Startup Disk/ 1st Partition but at this point I'll do whatever I need to do .
    Thanks!

Yes, if you repartition to a single partition everything in the second partition will be lost.
You will need to first create two partition on and external disk drive to hold all of the data from each of the partitions.
Then you are going to have copy all of the data off of the drive. In order to be sure you get everything you will need to use cloning software, such as SuperDuper or CCC.
Once you do that you can boot from the clone of your system partition.
Then you reformat the internal drive to single partition and clone the partition of the system drive back to the internal drive.
    Boot from the internal drive
Then copy data from second partition to internal drive.

  • Accessing Secondary HDD from Boot Camp

My SuperDrive got busted so I replaced it with a 1 TB HDD. So just recently, I installed Windows 8 on my primary SSD. It was all going well, except I limited it very limited space so it can't slow down my Mac SSD. So the question: How can I access my secondary HDD from my Windows partition? I don't see any D:\ drives. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: My secondary HDD has 2 partitions: a 900GB HFS partition for my Mac to access and a 100GB FAT partition I want my Windows to access.

installing the bootcamp software should let you access the mac hfs partition as read only
to write to hfs third party windows software is required
or you can use an external hd in fat32 or ntfs or make another fat32 or ntfs partition on the other 1tb hd
