"downgrade" iTunes software/change music from mp4 to mp3?!

I recently upgraded my iTunes software and all my music was changed from mp3 to mp4 format. That's great and all except for the fact that I just purchased a cell phone that has a music player that only supports mp3 files. I would really like to put some of my music on my phone. Is there any way that I could possibly "downgrade" my software or do anything else to turn my music back into mp3's?
Thanks!

The store has NEVER sold songs in mp3 format. The store files are in either protected AAC format or iTunes Plus format which is not protected. As Chris said, the only thing you can do with the protected format purchases is burn them to an audio CD. If you had purchased the iT Plus files, they can be changed to mp3 format. Just a suggestion, if you need mp3 format files, you may want to take a look at amazon.com, emusic.com, or audiolunchbox.com, just to name a few. The beauty of all of these sights is their downloads have no DRM.

  • How do i change songs from mp4 to mp3

Hi i hope some can help because i'm getting stressed out. I new to i tunes and have recently bought some music from i tunes store. I am trying to copy them to cd which as intrustions tell you how too, but when i try to play the cd it wont work beacuse its a mp4 file, i'm wondering how to change over my songs to mp3 format so they will work when copied to cd
    any help will be greatful
    thanks nicky

Most music in the iTunes store is m4p - DRM protected. You cannot convert this but you can burn it to an *Audio CD* which can be used as you would any other.
iTunes plus tracks can be converted, but you would only want to do that if you want to play them on a player that will not play AAC.

  • Downgrading Itunes software?

I know this sounds strange but I wonder if someone can tell me the process for downgrading Itunes software, if needed.  I pulled out an old Mac, with the hopes that I could Home share Itunes and my kids could watch tv shows on my old laptop.  It's a 2002-3 model so all the software is very out of date.  I upgraded the Itunes to 9.1 (the latest version my OS could support) but then when I went to open it, it told me my Quicktime needed 7.5.5. Unfortunately, 7.5.5 and even 7.3 requires a later version of OS than I have (I have OS 10.4.1).  Now I can't even open Itunes at all on the old laptop b/c I keep getting a popup window saying that I need the Quicktime 7.5.5 in order for Itunes to open.  So I'm worse off then I started!
Anyway to get around this or just downgrade the Itunes back to a version that can work with my Quicktime 7.2?
    Thanks!
    Bernice

OS 10.4 went all the way up to 10.4.11 which I was using with iTunes 9.2 less than a year ago. If you use the Combo Update to upgrade the OS from 10.4.1 to 10.4.11 then you will probably find you can get QT 7.

If by any chance you mean "m4p" rather than "mp4" be aware that the m4p's are protected with DRM that prevents conversion.

  • Error message when converting from mp4 to mp3

Three songs I just purchased won't convert from mp4 to mp3, although all of the other songs--including one from the same album these 3 are from--converted just fine. I keep getting "an unknown error occurred" message. How can I convert these 3 songs? Should I exit the iTunes store and reload it (in effect rebooting the store)? Or what?

Purchase only iTunes Plus songs, change the default encoder in iTunes to MP3 from the General section of its preferences, right-click the songs, and change them to MP3.

  • Software upgrade - reloading itunes without erasing music from PC or ipod!

Hello, I hope someone can help me?
My PC software has recently been upgraded. All my music has been saved but is now stored under windows media player not itunes. I want to get everything back up and running and to be able to connect my ipod, buy new music and have my itunes library as it used to be.
What should I do? Download itunes again? Authorize my newly upgraded computer? Help please! Not particularly computer lingo literate so advice in its plainest form would be much appreciated!!

    Hello Zosha15,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes. You will want to download and install the newest version of iTunes. From there, you will need to move the music from Windows Media player to iTunes by first finding where all this music is actually located on your system. Then you can go ahead and import it into iTunes. The article below should be able to assist you with this.
    http://www.jakeludington.com/askjake/20080329_transfer_music_from_windows_media_player_toitunes.html
You may have to choose the "Erase and Sync" option when you plug your iPod in because it will still associate it itself with your old iTunes library. This option will erase all content from the iPod and set it back to its default settings as well as allow you to sync it with your newly created library.

  • Why can't iTunes find the music from an external hard drive?

I moved my music to an external hard drive to free up space on my old laptop.  Since I moved to a new laptop, iTunes never seems to find the music.  I have to go through and manually select a song for it to find it one and then it says should it use this to find the rest of the songs.  Then it crashes.  I have reinstalled iTunes tonight with no real improvement.  I want to be able to create a playlist to upload to my new iPad as well as updating music on my iPod but I can't do any of it.  Please, any advice!

Has the new laptop given the external drive a different drive letter?
The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • I've copied all of my iTune's library music  from my PC to my new mac. Now how can my I get my iPhone to sync with this new iTunes?

I did the "home sharing" to get all of my music from my PC to my new mac (as told by a apple worker). Then I copied all of my music and playlists from the shared library to my actually itunes library. Now I don't know how to sync my iPhone up to this computer..? I've tried and it'll say it's syncing but the new song i bought to test it out won't show up on my phone.

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

  • Help with the iTunes 9, transferring music from older version.

I have a 2nd generation iPod Nano. I have a new laptop and attempted to download iTunes to manage my music library. I don't listen to the music on the computer just purchase from iTunes and then Sync with my iPod. I'm not good at techology. When I downloaded iTunes onto my new laptop, it deleted all my playlist but my songs are on my iPod just in numerical order.
I cannot get my Music from my iPod to transfer to the current version of iTunes. I am able to select Sync my iPod and it said Do Not Connect but nothing happpened with my iTunes library. Also, I purchased a song from iTunes and it will not transfer to my iPod.
Any suggestions other than to keep using my old laptop? I'm not even sure if the Music Library is set up on that computer because in the process of attempting to set up on the new laptop I select to move my Library to the new laptop.

Syncing music is a one way street with the iPod and that is from iTunes to the iPod and NOT the other way around. The only exception to this rule is with iTunes purchases. You can transfer them back to iTunes by plugging the iPod and choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.
Otherwise, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • ITunes deletes all music from my iPhone 6 when I sync

Just now when I tried to add some new music to my Iphone 6 (iOS 8.1.3) the songs appeared greyed out, but won't actually copy. When I hit the Sync button, steps 1-5 happened in a matter of seconds and then all the music (about 100gb) went offline - showing the ! next to each track. Further Sync attempts did the same super-fast 1-5 steps without actually doing anything.
This is not the first time this has happened, and it takes over an hour to copy all the files back to my phone. Please help!
    Zach

    Howdy Luna527,
You’ll have have change the Sync Music settings in iTunes, to delete the music from your iPhone and stop it from being synced back on to it when you connect it to your MacBook, as shown in the article linked below.
Sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod with iTunes using USB - Apple Support

  • Why does iTunes keep deleting music from off my iPhone

Ok so my music from iphone keeps deleting itself. I keep having to restore this dumb phone only to lose my information days and sometimes hours later. This is the final straw for me. I've restored this phone 20 times in a week! Im tired of dealing with all of these technical issues so when my contract is up I'm done with this thing. Is there ANYTHING I can do in the meantime to keep from losing my music.

I'll continue the discussion. I find the item in question. There was an app that I had deleted from my iTunes but was still on my iPhone dspite numerous syncs. I deleted the separately from my iPhone and no longer received the warning message described above.
Now however, when I delate an app in iTunes not only does the app stay on the iPhone but I do not even get the warning message.
My next step is to perform a restore. Perhaps this will clear up both this problem and a series of other issues like the wi-fi on/off randomly greying out on the iPhone and having all of my music on the iPhone disappearing after a sync.

  • HT4914 Will iTunes Match upload music from my iPhone?

No, you can only subscribe to iTunes Match and upload music to it from a computer's iTunes - turning 'on' iTunes Match on a phone will, I think, remove your current music from it

  • Trying to authorize my iTunes to play music from another account

I was trying to play music from another account in my iTunes. I got the message that my computer isn't authorized. I entered the email address and password of the account with which the music purchased and got another message that says  "This computer is already authorized. Including this one, you have authorized 4 computers out of your available 5."  Yet, I am still unable to play the music in my iTunes. Suggestions? Thanks.

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:
