Downgrade Windows 8 ent to windows 8.1 pro

(I asked this in the general windows forum but this may be a more appropriate place)
I have perpetual developer licences for Windows 8 under a now discontinued msdn subscription. My main box has Windows 8 ent (MAK license). I also have (as part of the ex msdn subscription) Windows 8 Pro retail licences.
I wish to migrate to windows 8.1 but do not wish to re-install all my developer software (Visual studio + sql server plus others) I think it would be possible to upgrade my win 8 pro licences to 8.1 pro as part of the free upgrade (presumably via the
store) if I could convert/downgrade my 8 ent install to 8 pro (i.e. downgrade first).
Is any of this possible without a current msdn or technet subscription?
(further info : tried https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/default.aspx and could see many of my kms/mak keys but nothing for windows 8 or 8.1. Also checked
my msdn keys (offline backup) and it looks as it the keys came from here, now when i log into msdn I see nothing as expected. Seems odd my details under that vlsc link contains no ref to windows 8 as it was certainly rtm months prior to my msdn sub expiring
Nov 2012)
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

Hi,
I have to say that we cannot downgrade from enterprise to pro without re-installing windows.
Thanks for your understanding.

    If you have license for Windows 7 or you have downgrade option. You should do reinstall of Windows 7 and there is no direct downgrade option. It is possible to backup data and then restore files from user profile manually but there is
    no direct downgrade option and you have to reinstall all programs.

  • Downgrading Windows 8.1 pro back to windows 8.1 regular

    okay so my friend sent me a code for Windows 8.1 pro (I already had windows 8.1 but I thought I'd use it so I could try out hyper-v) and it all worked perfectly, apart from the fact that the code was only an activator code and now I need to enter another
    code to get it to stop asking me to activate it, I'd be happy going back to windows 8.1 non-pro version but I just really need it to stop asking me to put in a code as it gets very frustrating while I am doing this on my pc. I know I shouldn't have used the
    code without asking my friend if it worked properly or not but I just need to know if there is a way to downgrade back to what I used to have, thanks for the help!
    I should also say that I am on a laptop that came with windows 8 already installed and have no product key for my original version

    Hi,
    Let make clear something.
    Was the Windows 8.1 pro or Enterprise 64 bit on your computer?
    Hyper-V is only available in the following versions of Windows:
    • Windows 8 Pro 64-bit Edition
    • Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit Edition
    • Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit Edition
    • Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit Edition
    If your laptop came with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, how did you enable Hyper-V?
    Please don't use the shared key with others. The key is the unique license for one copy of Windows.
    Meanwhile, please reset or refresh your PC to roll back to Windows 8 If you upgraded your PC from
    Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and your PC has a
    Windows 8 recovery partition.

  • Downgrade Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 7 Pro

    I have Windows 8.1 Pro and with incompatible hardware must downgrade to Windows 7 Pro, where my work station hardware is supported.
    PROBLEMS:
    Windows 8 cannot read my Windows 7 original retail Installation media - Media is useless on DVD.
    Installation media is blocked.
    Windows 8 cannot read download ISO from Microsoft, extracted to DVD or to USB.
    Installation media is blocked.
    Machine BIOS will not read Windows 7 installation media with Windows 8 installed.
    BIOS will read Windows 7 installation media once Windows 7 has moved Windows 8 to Windows_Old.
    Download ISO from Microsoft to run Windows 7 installer from Windows 8 desktop - cannot complete Windows 7 setup.
    When ISO setup select Region screen opens, mouse and keyboard both freeze.
    SOLUTION (S)?
    Windows 8 Pro downgrade to Windows 7 Pro early last year, licenses had to be reset for downgrade to occur.
    Answer Desk junior personal support this year has no idea what to do.
    At least with ISO, Windows 8 File Explorer can read DVD title, "Windows 7 OS".
    But cannot open folder to view contents - File Explorer crashes.
    With original Windows 7 Setup disk, Windows 8 finds no DVD information.
    Does this mean the Microsoft ISO is not the full/legitimate version?
    Which would explain the installer's hang!
    ISO from
    here.
    It has been suggested that CSM on, Secure Boot off, and BIOS Crtc electrical current flush should help.
    No help here.
    I get the feeling that in addition to Licensing, very sensitive adjustments of machine settings are required - any ideas?

    It is impossible to guess without knowing the exact hardware specifications.
    What is the exact make, model, and series of your system/motherboard?  There are quite a number of Windows 8.1 system that simply will not support Windows 7 for numerous reasons.

    Hello,
    retail(FPP) licenses of Windows 8.1 pro are not qualified to downgrade it to Windows 7 pro. however, OEM prienstalled licenses allowed downgrade rights to Windows 7 pro.

  • Windows 7 Professional downgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro OEM

    Hi,
    I purchased new computers for a small business with Windows 8.1 Pro OEM licenses and disks. I was intending to install windows 7 Pro using downgrade rights but when I enter the product key that came with Windows 8.1 it gives me an error with "Invalid
    Character".
    How can I activate Windows 7 Pro using downgrade rights from Windows 8.1 Pro?
    Thank you.
    André Gomes

    You cannot use a Windows 8.1 product key with a Windows 7 installation.  You must "activate by phone" and hold on to speak with a Microsoft Activation
    Specialist and explain your desire to invoke your downgrade rights to Windows 7.  The Microsoft Activation Specialist will then review your request and if approved, will issue you an activation code for Windows 7.

  • How to downgrade windows on C445

    Hello
    I have a Lenovo All In One C445 at work  and have many trouble with it.
    It have Win 8 from factory so I tried it, it's crap but didn't have time to change it since someone install virus on this computer... As I don't want to spend hours erasing all of it, I tried to install Windows 7 instead of using win 8 recovery.
    I disabled the BIOS OS change security (why this useless thing ?) and tried to install win 7 on the same disk as win 8 (wanted to replace win8 even if it's a dirty way) after reboot the win 7 logo move, and move and nothing appen even after 1hour...
    I restarted on win 8 and reduce it's partition to create a new on for win 7. After install, same "freeze", unable to complete installation.
    So as I need a computer to work I tried to use the win 8 recovery, launch it from win 8 but after reboot I have an error message "recovery partition has been destroyed" and now can't do anything, each restart end with this error, I can't boot from CD, I even can't go to the BIOS... NOTHING !
    I didn't destroy the recovery partition, i just splitted the big one and create a new one, but as the letter (X by defaut) seems to not be the recovery now, it's stuck in an infinite loop...
    How can I unlock this stupid computer ? Any "reset" jumper on the motherboard ? Or some magic keyboard key ? (I tried classic F2, F8, F12, del, escape...)
    Why do you offer win 7 drivers if you don't let use install it ?
    I'm so boring about OEM computer, we buy stuff we can't use our own way...
    Thank you in advance

    Actually that's where you are wrong, according to Microshaft's website, Windows 8.1 PRO installations have "downgrade rights" BUT ONLY to Win 7 PRO or Win Vista Business (BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that's a joke)
    http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/licensing/sblicensing/pages/downgrade_rights.aspx#fbid=-wiBOot8mXl
    Sadly this leaves Enterprise/Business editions out of the question...This has been extremely bothersome considering BitLocker is only included in Win 7 Business and higher (Being part of a HIPPA compliant Mental Health Agency this is EXTREMELY important
    to our functioning, especially now that TrueCrypt has ended their support and no longer even offers a download that will let you encrypt the system drive! Leaving us fumbling around trying to find a new solution)

    You must upgrade your Windows 8.1 Pro to Enterprise Edition (I've been told the upgrade is only 40$ (USD)) then you may Downgrade to Win 7 Enterprise...Still a little bit obnoxious just to downgrade but if you aren't working for a company with 100s of PCs

  • Upgrade Windows 8 Pro (VL) to Windows 8.1 Pro or Ent (VL)

    Hello,
    I have Windows 8.0 Pro from VL, and I would like to upgrade to Windows 8.1 either Pro or Ent from VL.  I downloaded both versions from VLC, but every time I start the installation, it just does nothing.  It says - Preparing - all the way to 98%
    complete, then goes away.  Then I try to upgrade by using the CD, and it says you must run setup.exe from within Windows, so please restart.  Like going in circles.
    If I run setup.exe from the sources folder, then at least setup launches, but then I get "Windows cannot find the Microsoft Software License Terms.  Make sure the installation sources are valid and restart the installation".  Hmmmmm.
    Does anyone know why the setup.exe does nothing (there is nothing in the background running) when starting from within Windows 8?

  • G580 BIOS Upgrade and Downgrade(Windows 8.1-Windows 7)

    I got a issue with my G580(20157) I have UPGRADED from Windows 7 Home Basic Preloaded to Windows 8.1 Pro by using DVD after OS Installation i have Updated my BIOS[62cn97ww_64] from [62cn40ww_64](My Bad) I'm able to Boot into Machine by Changing Boot Settings In BIOS(UEFI to Legacy and all that) it works fine.I Installed Energy Manager(Windows 8.1) the Function Keys Works Fine.Then After 3 Months I just rolled back to Windows 7(OEM)by Using OKR(One Key Recovery) Using NOVO Button Now I'm not able to use My Some function keys which works well with Windows 7(Fn+Esc,Fn+F4,Fn+F5) While (Fn+F1,Fn+F2,Fn+F3,Fn+F9,Fn+F10,Fn+F11,Fn+12) are working.
    So My Question Is
    1.Can I Downgrade My BIOS(62cn97ww_64) to (62cn40ww_64).
    2.I cant See My Fan Dust Removl In Windows 7 Energy Management(7.0) But in Energy Management 8.0 Version I Can See and use It and the brightness bar(when i increase and decrease brightness) and the wifi Interfarence of turning ON and OFF is not coming.

    Or should i wait For Windows 10 because I I m thinking to upgrade when Windows 10 come(Because there is a rumour that Lenovo will provide a free Upgrade to legit users.
    I Request all Techies and Engineers to please answer my Questions ASAP.

    It can be made into a nice system, powerful and stable.  But to do so takes an unprecedented amount of effort.  To make Win 8.1 as powerful as a well-tuned Win 7 is doable, with a fair bit of configuration and 3rd party software.
    I didn't care for Windows 8 at first either, but right now, after all the latest updates and quite a lot of tuning I feel it's the most powerful and most stable system I've run at my company.  I just finished a 14 hour work day developing
    software, collaborating online, running heavy applications like Photoshop (we do graphics software development), doing research, and my system just sailed through it all with not even the slightest hiccup.
    Windows 8.1 is finally mature and can (just barely) be coerced into being a damned nice desktop system.

    HI,
    what I want to know is when Downgrading Windows server 2012 64 bit to windows server 2008 R2 32 bit, will there be any issues of the license? Can I use the same license of 2012 server for the new 2008 installation.

    Hi,
    Based on my experience, we cannot use the Windows Server 2012 license key to activate a Windows Server 2008 install.
    In addition, which channel the windows server 2012 was purchased through? It seems that the media and product keys to downgrade are not provided although downgrade rights are granted
    since Microsoft only supplies bits and product keys to Volume License customers and only for certain versions and editions of the software.
    I recommend you to contact the Licensing Activation Centers below for assistance:

  • Clean installation of windows 8.1 pro on Thinkpad e550 activation problems.

    I have installed a SSD hard drive and need a clean instalations of windows for development using multiple platforms.
    My plan was to have a tri-boot on three partitions on a mbr formated drive.
    -Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit;
    -WIndows 8.1 Pro 32bit, and;
    -WIndows 7 Ultimate 64bit using downgrade rights.
    The following steps were used:
    1. Switching the hard drive and cloning the oem copy to the first partition;
    2. Activate windows getting the OEM key from the system (so I had no hardware changes);
    3.Use the anytime upgrade in the system properties to upgrade to pro;
    4.Clone the windows 7 OS from the old PC and place in on a partion;
    5.Download both install media for windows 8.1 Pro from MS Creating Install media;
    6. Create media as detailed here;
    7. Modify the install to allow entry of key after install as shown here because pro license and oem keys where not acepted during install;
    8.Went to BIOS. Turned on Legacy and disable secure boot;
    9.Install Windows 8.1 both versions, and;
    10. Repair boot to load all three OS.
    Good, Now I have all three OS installed all working. However, The pro product key will not activate the windows 8.1 pro and the oem key won't be acepted saying it is the wrong version of windows.
    So called MS activation line and they say i need to contact the OEM for activation and downgrade keys for 7 even though i paid for the upgrade through the MS store and the product was already activated once on the system.
    Questions:
    1. How can i activate the Windows 8.1 pro via Lenovo?
    2. How can I activate the Windows 7 copy under downgrade rights with Windows 8.1 pro?
    3. Am i missing something with the UEFI/BIOS? (Note:I need to use mbr not GPT format on the drive.)
    I have switch the UEFI mode/duel modes during install without success.

    What VC are you using?
    I use VMWare Player (free) and use it to create virtual clients as needed.  Typically the virtual clients are "clean installs" from ISOs.  VMWare has it so well mechanized that there's not much to it.
    It's pretty quick and easy to install Player and give it a try.  Another advantage to that approach is that there's only a single OS at the top level and backups can capture the whole mess w/out having to deal with 2 or 3 different OSs and their partitions.
