Downgrading Airport Express 2nd gen. to 7.6.1

Hi there,
I've just acquired another Airport Express today, 2nd gen., replacing a 1st gen. (n draft version) because of dual-band capabilities. Like other people, I have trouble with firmware 7.6.4 when playing music over AirPlay and optical to external DAC (see e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/message/19806591). I hear frequent high-pitch high-volume glitches, which ruins the listening experience. My 1st gen. could downgrade to 7.6.1 through AirPort Utility, but I can't do that with the 2nd gen. The message is "The selected firmware file is not compatible with this AirPort base station." I got the file as detailed on this site: http://www.laszlopusztai.net/2013/02/11/downgrading-airport-extreme-to-7-6-1/ (I tried all of them called 7.6.1.)
TL;DR: Is there any way to downgrade AirPort Express 2nd gen. to firmware version 7.6.1 so that optical out to a DAC works again?
Thanks!

Tks for the info.
I read tons and tons of posts here... have the same problem : can't downgrade from 7.6.3 to 7.6.1 because my airport express has been shipped with the 7.6.3 firmware version (how lucky ! ;-(
And no way to manually install the 7.6.1 binary as well (found here : http://www.laszlopusztai.net/2013/02/11/downgrading-airport-extreme-to-7-6-1/ see comments) when using the option key (option "Other").The install failed.
So, no solution at all ?? This is crazy !

  • Airport express 2nd gen best setting? plz help!

My airport express 2nd gen setting right now are Radio mode is 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (Automatic) 2.4GHz Channel (Automatic) 5GHz channel (Automatic) I use it as my main router i used it for my macbook pro, macbook, ps3, ipad 4, iphone5s, and iphone 5. What the best setting i should use and sometimes when ever someone use the microwaves it knock off my singal so can someone plz help me with that also? Thank you!!

Microwave oven operate in the 2.4 GHz band. Unfortunately there is not much you can do if your current one does interfere with your Wi-Fi network on this band.
    Some options are:
If capable, connect your wireless clients to the 5 GHz radio.
Relocate the base station farther away from the location of the oven.
Replace the current oven with a newer model that does not "leak" any microwave RF energy.

  • Airport Express (2nd gen), Airport Extreme and Airport TimeCapule (3rd Gen) interoperability

Airport Express (2nd gen), Airport Extreme and Airport TimeCapule (3rd Gen) interoperability
When all configured to provide wireless the network (Wired/Wireless) become unstable and very slow. When I disable wireless on the Airport Express the problem disappears. The problem effects all endpoint clients (iPhones, iPads, Mac's and windows) Any ideas?
    I own the following
    Airport Express 802.11n (2nd gen)
    Airport Extreme 82.11ac
    Airport TimeCapule 802.11n (3rd Gen)
    Config
Each of the Airport's WAN port is connected my AT&T Uverse modem
    Latest firmware on each device
    All use static IP's (192.168.1.x)
Airport's are all configured to "Create a wireless network" with same network name, security and password.
Wireless options are using Automatic for Radio's and Channels
Router mode is "Off (Bridge Mode)"

Don't do that. Decide which one of your AirPort Base Stations is to serve as your router. Connect that one, and no others, to the modem. Connect all the others to it, and configure them as bridges.

  • Airport Express (2nd gen): Radio Mode & Channel Set-Up

    Hello,
I am hoping somebody can help me with an Airport Express question.
I have recently purchased an Airport Express (2nd gen) and iPod Touch (4th gen) to stream music. I experience connectivity problems when my neighbour’s WiFi is turned on. When their WiFi is on my iPod rarely can detect the Base Station and when it does detect it - it cannot connect. The Airport Utility cannot detect the Base Station either when their WiFi is on. Yet when they are away and their WiFi isn’t turned on I have no problems and the system works absolutely perfectly.
I gather that I can change channels but I am looking for some advice on how to do this.
In work (because I can open the Airport Utility there –as there is no interference) I connect using the Airport Utility I have found the following options:
    Radio Mode:
5 GHz Mode:  Automatic mode, 802.11n (802.11a compatible) or 802.11n only (5 GHz Mode)
2.4GHz Mode: Automatic mode, 802.11n (802.11g/g compatible) or 802.11n only (5 GHz Mode)
    Radio Channel:
    5 GHz Channel: Automatic or four channels (36, 40, 44 or 48)
2.4GHz Mode: Automatic or choice of eleven channels
There are dozens of combinations using Radio Modes (5 or 2.4 GHz, manual or auto, 802.11a compatible) and Radio Channels (4 options using 5GHz and 11 options using 2.4 GHz).
Where should I start? Both radio mode manual and also manual channels? The possibilities seem endless!
    Can someone please help?
    Thank you.

    Hello, Tesserax,
My apologies if I have breeched community etiquette in asking for your advice.
I use a second generation Airport Express base station, Ethernet fed with category 6 cable, Radio Mode locked to 5 GHz for best data throughput, the station close to my iPad. The set up has improved YouTube video streaming performance significantly. No streaming freezing so far.
Are my base station's WiFi Settings are correct?
This is what I have done via iOS AirPort Utility -
Edit > Advanced  > WiFi Settings > 5 GHz Name: AirPort Lounge -
Radio Mode > Manual > Automatic Off > 5 GHz Mode > 802.11n only (5 GHz) > 802.11n only (5 GHz) ticked. Automatic off to allow access to 5 GHz only.
Radio Channel > Manual > Automatic On > 5 GHz Channel 149. Automatic on to allow switching between 5 GHz channels.

  • How to find MAC address for WAN port for Airport Express 2nd Gen.

The New Airport Express has a LAN and a WAN ethernet ports. How can I find the MAC address for the WAN ethernet port as my Service Provider needs it for provisioning....I can fid MAC address for Ethernet and for two wireless 2.4 & 5GHz but not for WAN ethernet port using Airport Utility 6.1

Many thanks for the swift response. However, there is no WAN MAC address on the box or on the device anywhere. I even used magnifying glass to find one .
The airport utility shows only three mac addresses. One for 2.4GHz, one for 5GHz and one fo the ethernet (LAN port) whereas there is another ethernet port in the device mentioned as WAN port and I am still not able to find the MAC address for the WAN ehternet port for Airport Express (2nd Generation).
Will appreciate a response to make th device work wiht my service provider as providing them the WAN mac address is a must. Had there been an option for cloning mac address, the issue would have not been there.
Many thanks again - in advance.

  • Airport Express 2nd gen will connect to the internet through LAN but not over wifi?

Interesting issue, I can stream Apple TV connected to the LAN port, send Airplay music to my receiver from my iphone, but cannot access the internet over wifi. So it's not Comcast, it has to be the Airport Express, but not ALL of the Airport Express, just the part that sends the internet signal. Is that even possible? I've restarted reset (hard and soft), re-setup, and unplugged everything 100 times, but to no avail. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Ok, thank you.
I know you already tried a number of resets, but please give the following a try to verify that you can get basic Internet access via a wireless connection to the Express from any of your wireless network clients.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation

Is it normal that Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation? I want to play music synced in my ATV 1st gen. to a nymber of speakers in the house. In the list of speakers I can see Apple TV itself and my two Airport Expresses 1st generation but not my Apple TV 2nd generation or my Airport express 2nd generation. For the ATV 2nd gen. I found a solution: when I enable the Airplay setting of XBMC which is installed on my ATV 2nd generation, then AirTunes in ATV 1st gen. sees the speaker "XBMS (Apple-TV)". Itunes can in my Macbook pro can use Airplay with all my speakers, i.e. ATV 1st gen., ATV 2nd gen., Airport Express 1st gen., Airport Express 2nd gen.

Last time I checked ATV1 could not use Airtunes to send audio to an AppleTV 2 or 3 - highly annoying as you think they would have kept backwards compatibiility for audio, but it seems Airplay is more than a superset of Airtunes.

  • Airport Extreme 2nd Gen - can not retrieve or assign an IP address

I had two 2nd gen Airport Extreme base stations. One connects to the internet, the other bridges the network to my office where I have wired devices connected. The office base station was no longer allowing me to connect to my USB drive for time machine backups, but all of the wired devices were routing to the internet properly.
I purchased a new base station (5th gen), bringing my total to three extreme stations and two express base stations (one express for an old wired network printer, the other for streaming music).
The old main base station is moved into the office, and the new base station (5th gen) becomes the "main" internet access point. I reset both devices and they install without a hiccup. Ditto the new express stations - they connect without having to reset them. Everything works as it did before the upgrade.
I take the old office base station (the one that would not allow me to backup via time machine) and do a factory reset. It reboots, the light flashes yellow (not surprising). I hook an old macbook (10.6.8) up to the old base station (and turned off the wifi) using a wired ethernet cable the ethernet port is assigned an IP address (10.0.1.2) via DHCP. My other macbook pro (10.8.5) running the latest AirPort Utility sees the old base station using wifi (under other wifi network). I select the old base station it automatically connects it to my new base station stating:
"This Airport Extreme will now be set up to extend <my new 5th gen AirPort Extreme base station>"
I change the default name and click next.
Now when the old office base station boots it will not connect to the network - it still flashes yellow. It will not assign itself an IP address, the macbook plugged into the ethernet port (using dhcp) shows (under network settings):
"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet."
    (the 169.... number)
Now the funky part. I manually set the wired ethernet's IP4 configuration (IP, subnet, router and dns server) on the old Macbook running snow leapord (10.6.8) - remember the wifi is turned off - and bingo - I am connected to the internet. All the while my old AirPort Exreme continues to blink yellow. If I manually assign an IP address to the AirPort Exreme's light turns green.
Clearly the old device is working. The ethernet port works, the wifi works - routing traffic from the wired ethernet through my home network and out to the internet. My AirPort utility on all my macs can see the base station, and can configure it (via wifi). I have even tried (via wifi) downgrading the firmware to 7.6.3 and then to 7.6.0 and the back up to 7.6.4. The only thing it will not do is give retrieve an IP address, or assign an IP address to wired devices.
    Any ideas?

I attempted to see/access (via the Disk Utility on my iMac) two drives already connected to my AirPort Extreme, but could not.
These drives are shared "network" drives, which Disk Utility cannot access. Disk Utility will only be able to access a drive if it is connected directly to a Mac.
If you need to format the drive(s), partition them, etc., you must do so with the drive connected directly to the Mac, then move them to the USB powered hub location at the AirPort Extreme.
These drives are available through the Finder and are used for Time Machine
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive connected to the AirPort Extreme, but some users seem to be able to make this work.
    1) Can I see/access USB drives (properly fomatted and visible/accessible in the Finder window) attached to my AirPort Extreme (2nd gen-firmware version 7.6.2)via a powered USB hub?
Probably. Some users find that one powered hub will work for them while another might not. To "see" the drives, you must first click on the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder. Then, if the drives are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), each drive will appear as a folder. Double click the folder name to mount the drive on the desktop.
    2) Can I use my iMac (running Lion 10.7.4) to create a concatenated disk set with USB drives (of varying size) attached to my AirPort Extreme via a powered USB hub?
The drives will all appear as separate drives, which must be accessed separately. If you were thinking of trying to start Time Machine backups on one drive and have them continue automatically on another drive when the first drive is full, that will not work.

  • Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update

Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPort

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

    Hola:

What model and firmware is the 2TB TC?
    What firmware is the AE?
Does the AE get good signal from the TC in its current location?
Signal can only be extended that is received intact.
Is it extending on 5ghz? As I remember it a Gen2 AE is only single band, although you can choose either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
I am fairly sure you are going to tell me your TC is AC model..
I would do a couple of things..
    1. Fix the wireless name, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    2. Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz so it is not going to jump around.
    3. Get real results from the AE in its current location for signal strength.. this is really only possible on v5 utility. And that is a double pain with Mavericks because you cannot use it.
Apple have removed all the useful diagnostics from the airport utility. There is next to nothing left. So you need to use the computer and its diagnostics to find signal levels in the location.

  • Can the WAN port be used as LAN when AirPort Express (2nd Generation) is setup to join a wireless network?

Can the WAN port be used as LAN when AirPort Express (2nd Generation) is setup to join a wireless network? (IE: 2 LAN ports)
I haven't been able to get a clear answer on this. I believe the 1st generation would act as WAN/LAN depending on setting, but what happens with the 2nd generation?
    Thank you for your time.

If the Express joins a wireless network wirelessly, in other words its WAN port isn't connected to anything, the correct way to connect a wired client to it is by using its LAN port.
I don't know what would happen if you were to connect a wired client to its WAN port instead — it's just not supposed to be used for that purpose. It won't permanently break anything if you were to try it though. If you were, the worst that would occur is that your network would become unresponsive as packets continuously traverse its WAN port in a circular fashion, which might require that you power down your router to reset your whole network.
If you are already using your Express's LAN port and you need another, the way to provide more ports is to purchase an inexpensive ($10 or so) switch. Connect it to the LAN port and as many other pieces of equipment as the switch's available number of ports.
You're correct about the first generation with the single Ethernet port. It could be used in either capacity depending on its configuration.
