Downgrading (for the time being), can someone walk me through it

I'm going to downgrade macbooks for a while. Going to sell my 13" macbook pro, (will probably buy a 15 or something soon).   But in the meantime I'm going to use my white macbook that just sits around.
The problem is, my pro has a 250 gig HD and my macbook has a 160 (I think).   I want to put only certain things on the macbook (iTunes music (not movies that take up about 60-80 gigs)), address book, maybe my pictures??
Both machines are running Lion, and I have a 500 gig external HD that I've done a few TIme Machine backups on.   But I cant just do a restore on the white macbook cause it would be too much stuff.
How do I put just certian things on the macbook and leave the rest on a time machine backup for a future macbook pro?
Can anyone walk me through it?

I didnt think so either. But can I just copy those certian things manually to the external? Then back to the white macbook? If so how do I do that?
Then obviously if I get a new one I can just do a restore.

OS X 10.6 comes in the form of a physical CD. You could start by calling your local Apple store and seeing if they still have any.

Their are some display adaptors you can get. I have an older Mac Pro with DVI but my monitor is a Thunderbolt Display. This used to be around $250. It is way cheaper now.

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

ok, thanks. couple other questions...
1. will it sync to my reminders on my MAC too if i enter via icloud? if not, what's the reason for having the reminder list available on my Mac if it can't sync?
2. I have 2 different email accounts, one with a .mac address and another with .msn. both can be accessed via icloud. i ran a test using my msn acct as the signin and it logged the reminder onto both the iphone and ipad fine.
however, when i try with my mac address, it only shows up on my iphone, which list reminders under icloud(which worked on both devices and then under mac which worked only on the iphone, not ipad. any idea why that might be happening?

It worked! I did put my SIM card into my replacement phone and Sha-Zamh lol! There are ez instructions as well when I logged into my Verizon acct. I clicked on "My device" then "switch my device" and followed just a few simple steps, with the final being switchin the SIM card, like you suggested. I think Verizon has to know what I was doing. In order for this to be a success I needed to obtain my "something something number" which is located on my phone (the one I was switching over to) Anyway, I appreciate your help, it led me right to where I needed to be, Thanks!

Go to the folder containing your catalog and delete the folder with the extension .lrdata. Then start Lightroom, and it will begin creating a new cache file.

If a new SIM is activated on the same account for the same number, any existing SIMs for that number are deactivated.

I forgot the passcode to turn off restrictions. I have restored my iPad back to the factory settings and then synced it with the latest backup. The restrictions are still on and it is asking for the passcode. Can someone tell me how to get that off.

The only option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings. Hope you have a backup.
Follow the instructions in iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.

if your logic board failed then connecting an ext. drive will be non productive.
if you take your hdd out of the failed mac and replace it into the borrowed mac you can then extract everything from that hdd. simply connect the external hdd, go into time machine preferences select your new ext. drive as the destination.
the external drive has to be formatted to mac os extended journaled. however you can purchase ext. drives already formatted for mac.
if you are having the logic board replaced then just put the old hdd back in, it will boot up normally.
you can rest easy knowing that if anything goes wrong, you have the ability to use your fresh backup to produce the same operating environment that you were using before things went wrong.

Hi- I was dogsitting and the dog chewed on my 6103. He broke the screen but otherwise the phone seems to be working fine... However I cannot see the screen/menu in order to turn Bluetooth ON so that I can get my phone numbers and pictures of my dog (who passed away in Feb. I kid you not)
If someone has this phone, can you "walk" me through the steps-- in other words if you write down which buttons to push in what order I can turn on bluetooth (My phone is already paired with my Mac so I should have no problem once the Bluetooth is on)
Just write out steps like;
- hit middle button
- hit left arrow twice
- hit the top left blue button
etc

A glaring reason to not buy a Thunderbolt or any 4G phone for the time being.

I just spoke with a Verizon rep at their customer loyalty office and was informed of a rather disappointing piece of information. Apparently If one upgrades to a Thunderbolt they will loose any promotional pricing they may have on their existing plan.
My wife and I have a Motorola droid X and an HTC droid incredible. I got in on a promotion for two phones on a family share plan that saved me $20 a month on the two data plans. Why would I be forced to give this up to buy a phone that doesn't even have 4G capability in my location yet? Furthermore, why should buying this handset ever effect my current billing structure if im only using 3G to the same capacity as I am now? This makes no sense to me and I would love for someone to tell me what I heard is wrong as at this point (eligible for my last new every 2) I may never renew and the thought of a new carrier sounds like an option.

The plans that offer the 9.99 credit are for a limited time (24 months, I think) and are tagged to the specific device purchased under that specific promotion. In other words the promotional price plan is the mechanism for the monthly credit.
I'm guessing it would be possible to activate a replacement for a defective device (as long as it's the same device) and not lose the promotional plan. If someone wanted to activate an older phone so they would not be required keep paying the 29.99 data plan, they would only be able to do so by dropping the promotional price plan.
While it's frustrating that the same requirement applies to the purchase of another smart phone, it is a feature/ requirement of the promotional price plan.
