Downgrading from Final Cut Pro HD to Final Cut Express 4

I have Final Cut Pro HD I have chosen to go back to (or to) Final Cut Express 4. I just bought the upgrade version of FCE 4 and I am wondering if FCP HD counts as a former version of FC for the upgrade version. I haven't opened the box so I want to make sure in case I need to take it back.

No it does not. The upgrade requires a previous FCE serial number. You'll have to return the box.

  • Can you upgrade from Final Cut Pro 3 to Final Cut Pro Sudio 2 with upgrade?

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from Final Cut Pro 3 to Final Cut Pro Sudio 2 with $699 upgrade?
I purchased Final Cut Pro 2 years back and then purchased the Final Cut Pro 3 upgrade. I have not used it in years, but now I want to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. Is this possible by just purchasing the upgrade?

Apple's web page has the requirements:
    http://store.apple.com/AppleStore/WebObjects/BizCustom?qprm=78313&productLearnMo re=MA886Z/A
The $699.00 upgrade version requires a valid serial number from a commercial version of Final Cut Studio, Production Suite, or Final Cut Pro 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. Academic and not-for-resale versions are not eligible for this upgrade.

  • I have recently update my Final Cut Pro X to Final Cut Pro X 10.1. I downloaded the update from the app store. Now every time I open Final Cut it crashes almost instantly. What can I do

I have recently update my Final Cut Pro X to Final Cut Pro X 10.1. I downloaded the update from the app store. Now every time I open Final Cut it crashes almost instantly. What can I do?- I really need help!

It sounds as though you have a corrupt project - or possibly a file within an event that is causing the application to crash.
Quit FCP X, then move your projects and events (if you have any) to new folders so that FCP X doesn't find them, then relaunch the application. If it launches OK, there's a very good chance one of your projects or events is causing the problem.
Quit the app again, then move one event or project at a time back to the original folder and launch FCP X again - keep going until you find the cause.

  • Final cut pro 7 and final cut pro x

Is it wise to move from final cut pro 7 to final cut pro x for me who is already using fcp7 with no problems?

I think you should at least download the free FCPX trial and try it, for sure.  I've edited in FCP since it came out and when I really tried earnestly to learn X, after a week or two, I was really impressed.  The reasons are numerous, but one of the big improvements is speed.  FCPX is very fast at handling video, all kinds.
If you know FCP7 well, then you will already understand the importance of many aspects that apply to any HD NLE, such as drive speed, sufficient drive space, (external w/fast language, Thunderbolt, USB3 or at least FW800) etc., but also there will be a kind of learning curve to the different way FCPX organizes, maybe more of a learning wall.  But it's too much to lay on you in this reply - suffice to say I think you will love X.  Especially if you really stop to learn it.  It really is nice, and often receives completely unfair criticism.

  • HT200166 Can I upgrade fromFinal Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X

Can I upgrade from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X ?

Two more important tidbits of information:
    1) There is a free trial of FCP X, that is fully functional for 30 days, so you can try it out and learn the ropes before you buy.
    2) In case you want to bring in some old projects cut in 7, and work on them in X, you are going to need a tool called 7toX to convert them.

  • Importing final cut pro 7 to final cut X using XML

OK so I just read Apple's new FAQ and it says support for XML is forthcoming. Couldn't someone enterprising individual   just write an app which transforms FCXML from FCP 7 to FCP X XML. There could be some data loss, but better than nothing..

    the black sun wrote:
But they have said they will not be supporting import of FCP 7 projects. Sad but true.
    Factually incorrect. Sad but true.
Tell me what is factually incorrect? There is absolutely no mention or commitment to providing any sort of tool to bring in final cut pro 7 projects in any shape or form. They could have said "a limited import tool is being worked on, but will only support a limited feature set, and data loss/changes to your project may occur." But they didn't. Here's the exact quote from Apple's FAQ (emphasis added):
Can I import projects from Final Cut Pro 7 into Final Cut Pro X?
Final Cut Pro X includes an all-new project architecture structured around a trackless timeline and connected clips. In addition, Final Cut Pro X features new and redesigned audio effects, video effects, and color grading tools. Because of these changes, there is no way to “translate” or bring in old projects without changing or losing data. But if you’re already working with Final Cut Pro 7, you can continue to do so after installing Final Cut Pro X, and Final Cut Pro 7 will work with Mac OS X Lion. You can also import your media files from previous versions into Final Cut Pro X.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 vs Final Cut Pro X

I was told that Final Cut Pro X was terrible by pretty much everyone, including my teacher in my film class. I just got a macbook pro and I need a solid editing software. What is the big difference between Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Pro X? Is Final Cut Pro 7 still available for purchase?

FCX isn't aweful, it's just different. Older people (like me) who've been editing for a while and have gotten used to ways of doing things don't like it much because it's completely different in it's approach. Not ALL us older types are against it...but a lot. But it isn't horrible...it is perfect for a lot of editing jobs. It's fast, it's easy...it does a lot of what many people need done. But there are tasks that some editors like myself need to do that it just doesn't do...so we don't use it.
HOW is it different? There are lots of tutorials out there for it, so find them and watch and see.  Pretty different. Too much to go into. But I assume that you are new to this whole thing, so you don't even know how FCP 7 works....so you don't know how it's different.  It's a lot to ask for in a forum post.  It doesn't capture tape from non-firewire devices, for one. No biggie if you shoot tapeless and deliver tapeless, but I still work in a world where tape is very much alive.
FCP 7 was discontined over 2 years ago...only placed you can buy it are eBay and Craigslist and places like that. But I wouldn't suggest investing in discontinued, old software.  Adobe PRemiere Pro and Avid are viable alternatives.  But I wouldn't discount FCX...it might work great for you. I hear people just starting out editing find it amazing.

Can I export Final Cut Pro files to Final Cut Express?

FCE only works with DV for standard definition and the Apple Intermediate Codec for HD. Most FCP projects cannot be opened in FCE.

No, FCP X will only work with Compressor 4.

    thanks!

    Hi campus56,
If you didn't create Win XP's recovery discs, then you would need to order them from lenovo, whether you're upgrading or downgrading it's always recommended to create recovery discs through ThinkVantage of your previous OS.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downgrading from Final Cut Pro Studio to Final Cut Express

Will Final Cut Express let me use the Boris Title 3D Video Generator effect that I now use in Final Cut Pro Studio?
Does it have an outline text video generator effect?
Since I have DVDSP 4.1.2, will I be able to drag my exported non self-contained quicktime movie into DVDSP? I have read I can use iDVD.
I see from the tutorial (http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/) it does not have the ability to log clips for batch capture later but it does have a project button. Does anyone use that and can share what it does?
I have a Canon DV20 HD camera which I use for DV also. Since I have read that FCE will not read HDV from this camera, has anyone brought DV in using this camera?
Does anyone see any other negatives to downgrading?
I have been using Final Cut Pro from version 1.5 since it did what I needed it to do. Over the years they have added a plethora of packages to it, none of which I use. So why spend 700.00 to upgrade when I can spend 200 to get what I will use?
    Thanks for your input.

    Lots of questions:
"Will Final Cut Express let me use the Boris Title 3D Video Generator effect that I now use in Final Cut Pro Studio?"
    Yes.
"Does it have an outline text video generator effect?"
Yes, but don't use. Use Title 3D.
"Since I have DVDSP 4.1.2, will I be able to drag my exported non self-contained quicktime movie into DVDSP?"
Yes. Or you can use Compressor, which you should have, to encode your video.
"I see from the tutorial (http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/) it does not have the ability to log clips for batch capture later but it does have a project button. Does anyone use that and can share what it does?"
It allows you to log your material first, selecting the pieces on the tape you want to capture and then going back and letting the machine capture the selected pieces.
"I have a Canon DV20 HD camera which I use for DV also. Since I have read that FCE will not read HDV from this camera, has anyone brought DV in using this camera?"
    Never heard of camera.
"Does anyone see any other negatives to downgrading?"
    What version are you using?

  • How do I get the files from final cut pro trial to final cut pro

I purchased Final Cut Pro after using the trial version and I don't know how to get the project I was working on into the new purchased version?

You should be able to determine which version your trial is by control-clicking it on your desktop and selecting "Get Info" from the contextual menu that appears.

  • Can I upgrade from Final Cut Pro 6 to Final Cut Pro X?

    HI,
I am trying to budget up expenses to upgrade both of these machines. Unfortunately, I sense that I have to scrap my G-5 Pre-Intel
tower for one that is Intel, and can go through the Lion phase, as will my Macbook Pro laptop.   I have been pretty skimpy by only
upgrading Photoshop (CS 4) and Final Cut Pro (6.06; though I have the entire suite from 2007), and may have to continue doing so unless I can
imagine buying the entire Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and the entire FCP suite as well. I know that I can upgrade on the Photoshop from 4-6 but I am not finding anything that tells me that I can upgrade FCP from 6-X.
    Any comments?

There is no upgrade from FCP6/7 to X.  You have to either stay with 7 or buy X for $299.  Either way, an upgrade woud cost the same.
Trust me, X is well worth it and I dont miss 7 one bit.

  • Final Cut Pro Academic and Final Cut Pro 5

I am a novice with FCP, my question is can files created in FCP 5 be used by Final Cut Pro academic. Every time I try to open a file I created at home witth FCP 5, I can't open it at school with FCP academic

David's right. Files are not backward compatible. I had the same prob when I was in school. So I just worked at home where I had an academic version of FCP 4.5HD. Told my instructors the problem and they understood. Then I did the universal crossgrade to FCP Studio. It's the ONLY time Apple allowed an upgrade from the academic to the pro version of anything.
