Downgrading to 3.1.2 and Keeping Contacts

I've figured out how to downgrade from the OS for my iTouch 2G from 4.0, which gives me loads of grief, to 3.1.2, but is there a way for me to keep my Contacts intact? The only backup that has my all my Contacts is the one 4.0. Thanks for any help.
PS: I probably have an older iTouch backup somewhere on my external PC hard drive, but I have no idea where to find it.

I ended up just retyping everything into Google contacts from my old (don't laugh) Palm Pilot and synched. It had the virtue of making me update everything.
What do people use to backup their Notes? I lost those too, because I didn't realize that Apple deletes the old backups (why?).
The good news is that I got rid of 4 and went back to 3.1.2. Look for the threads on how to do that -- if I could manage it, anybody can.

Switch 3GS phone to new user and keep contacts

My wife got my brother's old iPhone 3GS from him when he upgraded to the iPhone 4 over a year ago. The person at AT&T transferred my wife's contacts from her old phone to the 3GS phone. She can't buy any apps without using my brother's ID so she hasn't purchased anything yet.
She wants to clear the phone but still keep all of her contacts. I was wondering what steps she would need to follow to do it.
We did go to the Apple store but didnt our laptop with us to try and work through it there and the directions that we got were a bit confusing after we got home.
Any help would be welcomed?
Also, would it be beneficial to upgrade the iOS to the latest version as well since the phone is currently running v3.1.3?

Yes, upgrading to iOS 5 would be very beneficial. Have her upgrade to iOS 5, and then set up "iCloud." This will allow her to back up her contacts to the cloud. Then, she can wipe the phone, and once she re-enables iCloud after the restore, "Contacts" should be on and then appear on her phone.

I have a user who wants to do this same thing. I did not find any way either to default the attributes to anything other than what you see the first time. Seems like such a trivial thing, hard to believe they do not allow it. I did find a program for this called iDress but I can't seem to download it from any links on the Internet. I am going crazy. I have an iPhone 4 and my husband an iPhone 5. When our devices are synced to iTunes, our contact lists are merged.
I've previously set up a separate user account for each of us and we both have separate apple id's. I even tried setting up a new library for him but it keeps reverting back to my contact list on his phone etc.
How can I sync our contact lists and keep these details separately? He has work numbers in my phone and I have mine in his. Its driving me nuts deleting the numbers we don't use on each others phone!

I've done this and when i click done, it says to fix errors; i repeat the process then it says to contact apple support. Any ideas or other experiences with this? I've had this happen before and it got resolved after i called them and it took a few days, not very convenient. The same thing happened when I was just trying to update my account info with a new billing / account address.

How do I go about keeping Contacts and Apps Separate on 2 Smartphones on my Account?

I may be over thinking this. I have two phones, a Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 active on the same account each having their own phone number. When backing up and storing contacts and apps, I would like to keep each separate from the S3 and vice versa. Do I have to create separate gmail account and google play account? Also when backing up on the S3 it says I have to login using my Verzion account, but I do not want that info on the S3. Thanks

For backing up through MyVerizon, you DO need a separate MyVerizon login for each number. The primary phone will have access to both lines for adding/removing features etc, but NOT to the contacts and ringtones/ringbacks/music purchased for the other line. TO set this up, log out of MyVerizon, then REGISTER the other number for a username and password. If it says the account is already registered, clear cookies and cache, or use another browser to set up the second account.
You can then run and use backup assistant for each number, keeping contact lists and media purchases separate.
It probably would be better to have a separate Google account for each device as well. I have my tablet (Samsung Galaxy 7") and phone (Motorola Droid 4) on the same Google Apps so I can load apps on both (or one or the other) from the playstore on my computer. But in your case, it would make more sense to have separate accounts for the two lines.

This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.
