Download an existing site

All the tutorials I have found have dealt with creating new
sites and publishing them. I have a site already on the internet
that I want to work on with DW. I have been unsuccessful at
importing it using DW and it won't synchronize with the existing
site if I simply FTP my old way. Kind hearted suggestions would be
appreciated...

Ignore what you've been told.
1. Define a site in DW (refer to Help (F1) to learn how to
properly define a
site).
2. Connect to your (remote) site.
3. Get (DW term) the site.
If you follow DW's instructions and define your site
correctly this will
work perfectly.

Edit Existing Site With Dreamweaver

Im sure this question has been asked 100 times but how do I edit an existing site (published and on the web) with Dreamweaver CS5.5? I took over as webmaster last month at a company and would like to edit the companys website. How do I download the files off the web? I can do it with Contribute but not Dreamweaver.

Create a local site folder in DW. Site > Manage Sites > New.
Go to Advanced > Remote info and enter your log in-details (FTP, host URL, username, password).
Test connection to server.
Then GET files from server.

There are two parts to this:
1) It may be that you should have an Apple Education Support person helping you with this. If you have enough computers for this to be a problem, you may benefit from a Server, a site license, and an occasional visit from an Education Support Specialist.
2) The brief answer, if you want Individual Apple_IDs to control each computer, is to buy new copies of Mac OS X under those new Apple_IDs and re-download and re-Install. Mac OS X is customized to the Apple_ID before it is downloaded.

Problems trying to manage an existing site in DW

I'm coming from FrontPage to DW. I always edited my website on the server. I can't get DW to do that and I wasn't able to get DW to download my existing website to my computer so I downloaded it using Frontpage. I know can edit the local copy of my website in DW but can't get DW to see my remote files. I did set up the remote section when I defined the local site and when using the test connection button I get a message saying DW connected successfully however all I see in the folder tab is a folder icon with no name and no files.

Don't ever do that! If you mess something up on the server-side you could be stuck with no viable backups to recover from.
Do your editing of site/pages within your locally defined Site in DW. When you're happy with the previews on all major browsers then, and only then, upload (PUT) to server.

Dreamweaver CS6 will not recognize existing site definition files

Neither does CC, naturally. These are sites I haven't edited for about a year. I can't find any information about reloading sites by importing the contents, only by opening the STE files... which in this case, won't open.

Are you attempting to simply open the .ste, or are you going to Site > Manage Sites > Import?
If you are tring to import them correctly (second option above) and they aren't importing, the .ste files may be corrupt. To create new site definitions from your existing content...
1. Go to Site > New Site
2. For the "Local Site Folder" browse to one of your current site folders on your HD
3. Add a server and FTP credentials obtained from your hosting company (if you don't have them)
4. Save
5. Repeat for each site
EDIT: If you don't have the site's files locally, do the same as above (setting the local site folder to an empty folder on your HD) and, once you add the FTP info, click the Get button (down arrow) in the Files window to download your entire site onto your machine.

Newbie: first time interfacing with existing site

Hi, first post here.
Our company has an existing website that was created several
years ago by someone no longer with the company. It is ColdFusion
based.
For the last few years, I have been in charge of site
management. I have no formal background or training as a webmaster,
so my experience growth has been awkward and unconventional.
I've been doing coding using a text editor to do direct html
manipulation. I then test "live" on our site, usually on a hidden
page. As my company grows, I have not had the time to keep up with
site expansion, and I have yet to date to find a reliable full time
or part time webmaster replacement for me (believe me, I've tried)!
So in the meantime, I have decided to see if I can simplify
my work using Dreamweaver.
So far, I am not off to a great start.
I have downloaded our entire site to our local networked
server in order to have a local architecture mirror. However, since
our local server does not have CF installed, I realize that I
cannot test locally.
I set up remote access to our web server, and Dreamweaver
connects successfully when I test in site management.
However, when I go to "remote view" or "testing server" and
accept the prompt to Get Dependent Files, I always end up with a
partially complete view of the page I want to see, with many
missing elements.
Am I asking too much from Dreamweaver, since in essence I am
asking it to come in and manage a very mature and extensively
developed site after the fact? Is the program able to fully
interface with any established site as long as its programming
language is supported?

Sounds like maybe you haven't told us everything. Does your
site use
Coldfusion programming? If so, you can always download the
free
developer version and test locally.
As far as testing HTML locally, you don't need a remote
connection.
You can download the files to your computer and use the
Preview in
Browser to test the pages before you load them. And yes, you
should
be able to scroll up and down and see the entire page if it's
coded
properly.
Or am I totally misunderstanding your question?

Can I load an existing site in iWeb?

I have a website that I put together with an old program I can't use in OS Leopard (wouldn't want to anyway). I want to start using iWeb to work on my web pages. Can I load the pages of my site into the iWeb program to edit? How do I do that? Thanks.

How do i download my PHP site and edit it with Dreamweaver CS5?

I have followed the instructions and installed MAMP for mac. Connected and downloaded the entire site.
When i open the index.htm file it appears with a URL for the main website.
When i place it in live view the website code and design appear, but i cant edit it.
When i copy the code and save it then open the index.htm file the design appears without the links to the flash, gifs, etc and looks pretty basic.
the page appears with the following meta tag

Have you tried Inspect mode? If not try this:
Open your page in Split Design/Code view. Start Live View. Start Inspect mode.
Move the mouse around in Live View. Notice that the element under the mouse is automatically selected in Code View. Click on the element that you'd like to edit. Make your edit in Code View. Press F5 to refresh Live View.
Repeat, if necessary

You can upgrade to iPhoto '11 with OS X 10.8.5 by purchasing an iPhoto '11 DVD from Amazon, eBay or other source - or you can upgrade your OS to Mavericks for free if your system meets the requirements and then purchase the upgrade to iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store - in either case backup first in case of problems

For one, every time I try and download it it takes a second and then says "thank you for downloading iTunes!" and after that there's nothing, no results, no download. I read the instructions, and I looked on my toolbar. There appears to be no pop-up control and I can't find anything relating to it. I have Windows 8, in case that makes a difference. This shouldn't be a problem, but it is, so....HELP???!

I can't open sites that I built in iWeb 09 after my hard drive has been reformatted, I can only open new.

if you were using time machine or any other backup system you should be able to recover a copy of the domain file.
All your iweb work is in the domain file, if that isn't frequently backed up, you lose your edited work. Your published site should still be fine but if you republish iWeb now it will overwrite your published site and it will be gone as well.
By default, the "domain" file is in your user/library/application support/iWeb folder.
You will have to start over if you want to make changes to your published site. If you have to redevelop your site, publish to a local folder until you get it the way you want it, because when you publish to your server it will overwrite your existing site. in the future keep your domain file frequently backed up and keep copies somewhere other than your hard drive.
Hopefully you were using time machine, if not I feel your pain.
