Hi,
iTunes and the iPod will only play mp4 files. You will need to convert the .avi files to this format in order to play them.
You can do this by opening them in Quicktime (if you have Quicktime Pro) and choosing File/Export/Movie to iPod.
Look here for other converters - http://www.versiontracker.com/php/qs.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=avitomp4&srchArea=windows%7Cwin-all&submit=Go

No, it is not possible, but you can always download any video converter. Or open your AVI file with QuickTime.

  • Is it possible to import an avi file into iTunes?

I am trying to import in a TV show that i have downloaded as an avi file into iTunes. However when i try to import it nothing happens, if i try and change the file format into a mp4 it wont recognize it. Does anyone have any ideas?
I can not find it in any other file format anywhere online.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Export the OMF from an audio app like ProTools or Logic as a stereo pair AIFF, then use that with your video. Chop it up if you need to checkerboard.
Of course this will only work if the audio is very simple - overlapping audio will mess you up. If you can figure out the audio app part, you can split up your OMF into separate tracks.
But then if you can't get it into an audio app, you're a bit hosed.

I suggest that you try to use Tiny Umbrella to kick your device out of recovery
The link to download Tiny Umbrella is shown below

On the right hand side of the link you will see links to download Tiny Umbrella
After downloading and opening tiny umbrella, Click on exit out of recovery. Hope that works for you. If it doesnt work, try to write a detailed description of your problem and what is appearing on your screen etc and we will go from there. Good Luck

  • Importing .avi files in iTunes

Importing .avi files in iTunes can be done as follows ( this comes from the Quicktime tutorial site) :
Open your .avi file in Quicktime and click Share
When I try this on my iMAC the option for ITunes does not show up on the list. Is someone able to tell me how to achieve this. I have attached a print from what I see in Quicktime when I want to share an . avi file

Convert the file to an itunes compatible format using Handbrake.

  • Problem downloading avi files

    Hi,
I have recently had problems downloading avi files from rapidshare.de, because the avi files do not download to my desktop (a new ticket system prevents me from manually clicking on the link, and instead begins downloading the files automatically), but open and play in my browser (Internet Explorer 5.2). I cannot save these files to my computer or open them in my QuickTime application. Can I get some help as to how I can configure my browser to download avi files to my desktop, instead of opening them in the browser

    Hi erikson1,
If the link is a direct liink to the avi file, you can just hold the 'control' key - click and hold the mouse over the link and then select "Download linked file to disk."
If the link is to a html or other similiar web page that will play the file in it then it gets a little more complicated to get that avi file. Then you may have to view source of that page and find the direct link to the avi file for download.

  • Viewing .AVI files iin iTunes

Hi, is there any way of viewing .AVI files in iTunes, and if so is it possible to make them viewable on a Video iPod?
    Thanks.

I don't believe AVI is one of the supported formats. You are probably better off converting it to an MPEG format.

  • Watch avi files on iTune

Hi I want to use iTune as mediacenter, all my files are avi,
how can I watch them in iTunes ?
I have over 1000 files so converting is out of the picture.

I have a feeling they want to prevent files being transferred over the internet and played on iTunes that way. It does annoy me sometimes like that. For example, my iTunes can play .mov files and podcasts, but my phone doesn't seem to like those pulled from iTunes, though it will play them fine online.
I can recommend iSquint which is free, and they have a pay version which has many more features, but it's brilliant at converting files anything from avi to flash. They also have settings for quality which can help get really good quality, or space saving files. They also have a few little silly things as well which I always seem to smile at when I see them.
I just hope the link below still works! The developers seem to have gone out of business since I downloaded the file. Hope versiontracker works!

  • Where are the  downloaded movie files for iTunes stored?

Im trying to find the files on my time machine to restore some movies I had in Itunes.  I can't download them again from itunes for some reason so I am trying to restore the files from the time machine. I need to know where on my mac the movies and tv shows I've downloaded from iTunes are stored on my computer Any help would be greatly apreciated.

They're located inside the Music:iTunes:iTunes Media folder of your home folder unless you told iTunes to look elsewhere for its library.

  • How to download mp3 files into iTunes

This question differs from, but is related to subscribing to podcasts (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2124335&tstart).
Rather than subscribing to a podcast, I just want to download a story http://transmissionsfrombeyond.com/podpresstrac/web/121/0/TFB_020TheWatersOfMeribah.mp3, hosted at http://transmissionsfrombeyond.com/2009/08/transmission20. I did File->AddFileToLibrary. The dialogue box that came up was pointing at a temporary internet file folder. For the file name, I provided the URL above, but all that happened was that it downloaded 2 files into the temporary internet file folder:
    TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[1].mp3
    TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[2].mp3
    Why are there 2 parts?
I tried to drag them to the iTunes Podcasts area, then try to drag it to the Podcast entry in the navigation panel along the left. Neither action resulted in the appearance of the files in iTunes.
I tried to find where iTunes stores its files. It seems to be at "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music", though the folder structure in no way mirrors the 6 iTunes libraries (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Applications, Radio). Previously suscribed podcasts had corresponding folders in the Podcasts subfolder, but there were no subfolders for the other five libraries.
I dragged the two mp3's into the Podcasts subfolder, but it didn't show up in iTunes. I then emulated the previously subscribed podcasts by creating a TheWatersOfMeribah folder within the Podcasts subfolder, then dragged the mp3's into that folder. Again, no joy.
Surely, I doing something very wrong. What is the way to download mp3's into one's iPod Touch?

    Apple rejects my alias wrote:
That's the thing, it's not a subscription podcast. It's just an mp3 file. Entering a URL as worked for subscription podcasts, but hasn't worked for the URL of the mp3 file.
    No, it won't!
I've checked the links you provided and the problem is - they are not Podcasts (as you noted), despite what the text on the page says. In order to get these programmes into the Podcast section of iTunes, they must be downloaded _as Podcasts._ So why not get the Podcast?
First, let's get the Podcast, then I'll explain what the problem has been.
To actually get the Podcast; on the pages you linked, look for and click on the *iTunes/1 click* button, just above the donate button. You may get a dialogue box appear that says "This link needs to open an application. Send to:" and one of the choices should be iTunes - choose it. That step may be skipped and you may go straight to iTunes.
When iTunes does open, it should go to the *iTunes Store/Podcasts/.../Transmissions From Beyond* page, where you can select individual episodes or subscribe to the complete series. Make your choice. The advantage of subscribing is that iTunes will then do all the work of finding new episodes, downloading them and syncing them to your iPod.
An alternative is to search in the iTunes Store for "Transmissions From Beyond" which will find the Podcast. I've just done this, so I know it works!
    Now, what was the problem?
On the pages you linked to, the authors keep referring to everything as a Podcast, but an mp3 file _is only a Podcast_ if it's downloaded through a "Podcast catcher", such as iTunes. This whole process then keeps track of new episodes and can also automate the removal of an episode that you have listened to if you wish. (See the options in the Podcast tab of your iPod when you connect it to iTunes.)
If you download the mp3 files as you did, they are simply mp3 files, which will end up in the music section of your library, perhaps with a genre of Podcast. (To be a Podcast, the file needs to have a *Media Kind* of Podcast, not the genre. A Podcast can have any genre, speech, music, drama etc.)
As you have seen, even the content providers are mis-informed about what a Podcast is.
By the way, when you tried "entering the URL" - iTunes will only recognise valid *Podcast Feed URLs,* but not the location of an mp3 file. The enter URL option is useful if you have the *Podcast Feed* of a Podcast that is not listed in the iTunes Store.
Finally, in fact you have downloaded the mp3 file _three times._
    The first time as TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah.mp3,
    the second time as TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[1].mp3,
and a third time as TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[2].mp3

  • Add .avi files to iTunes Library

Hi, I can't seem to add a .avi file to my iTunes library. When I give the command, I can hear my hard disk working, but it doesn't add the movie to the library. Do I have to convert it first? If so, how can I convert it, and make a file that I can add to my iPod?
    Thanks.

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert it to MPEG-4 and import that into iTunes. An AVI can contain audio and video of any format, and some formats can't be played or converted in Mac OS X.

  • Downloading avi files from camera

I have a Canon Powershot s230 and usually I can easily download my video clips (avi format). However, every once in a while, iPhoto just acts like it is downloading but it gets "stuck." It doesn't download the video clip or anything taken after. I notice it only when the files are large. I read another user was successful with ImageCapture, but I tried that and had no luck.
Anyone else having the same problem? Any way to resolve this other than deleting the clip from the camera and re-trying?

"I notice it only when the files are large."
How large? See Knowledge Base Article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93490 QuickTime: Exporting AVI Files Larger Than 1 GB

  • Cant add .avi files into itunes

    as above..
i have been clicking n dragging n it doesnt work..
it opens fine in quicktime pro though..

iTunes can't handle .avi files. If you have Quicktime Pro and are able to open them with it, you should also be able to convert to something more palatable using the Export function.

  • Playing avi files in iTunes

I would like to be able to use iTunes and my iPod touch to play .avi files saved saved to my pc from a canon digital camera. There is an option to open the video file using itunes but when I select that option, iTunes simply opens and nothing else happens. Similarly when I sync photos to my iPod touch, the video files are ignored despite my selecting the "include videos" option. Any ideas?

itunes and ipods won't play avi files. Use handbrake or something similar to convert them to a supported format.
