John, thanks for the suggestion. The messasge was created by outlook and is an email message. I brought it back into outlook and still cannot open it. I think it is more of an issue of the file not being converted properly by acrobat, but I can;t tell for sure.

  • Can't open .msg files more then once, saved or as an attachment to an email

    we use :
    microsoft xp & office/outlook 2003
can't open .msg files more then once, saved or as an attachment to an email
If we save an email as a outlook.msg file , we can only open it once, close it,
when trying to open it again it gives an error that it is not possible due to a scurity issue or it is already open.
After closing outlook and starting it again, we can open it once again.
Same when clicking an .msg that is attached to an email, but here we can switch to another email, go back to the one and open it again.
We have installed all updates for both xp and office 2003 also internet explorer 8.0 to test if that would work, normally we have ie7.0.

    Hi,
    1.  What is the detail error information, please try to reproduce the issue and then post the detail error information here.
    2.  Did you save the msg file locally or on a network drive?
    3.  Please try to check security on the msg file and also check the drive NTFS permission.
    4.  Copy over the email messages from the affected user machine to a different machine and check if the issue persist.
    5.  Test if the issue persist after saving a new email on Mailbox to local drives.
    6.  Copy over the affected email messages from local drive to a PST file and check if these emails can be opened fine.
    1)    Create a new PST file .
    2)    Added to user’s Outlook profiles.
    3)    Launch Outlook .
    4)    Highlight a folder under this PST.
    5)    Drag and drop or copy/paste the emails from local drive to Folder highlighted under the PST files.
Besides, please try to remove all the add-ins like Entrust and then test the issue again.
    1.     Remove add-ins
    1)    Uncheck all Third-Party Add-ins selected in Outlook , found under Tool\Options\Other\Add-ins managers.
    2)    Export the registry hive below for backup.
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook \Addins
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook \Addins
    3)    Delete the registry entries under the above path for all Third-Party Add-ins.
    4)    Close , Open Outlook and attempt to open email message on local drives.
    2.     Temporarily stop all third-party application running following the steps
    below.
    1)    Run MSCONFIG
    2)    Go to Services Tab\Select Hide all Microsoft Services check box.
    3)    Click Disable All.
    4)    Restart the Machine Test if the issue persist.
    5)    To revert back the above setting Run MSCONFIG, Go to General Tab , Select Normal
    Startup and restarted the machine.

1 Translated from dutch as good as i know :
"Can't open : c:\test.msg, it might not exist, do you have the required permission to open the file or is it open in another application. Click
with the right mousebutton on the map click properties to view/check the rights for that map."
2 tried both, the network and locally, i have the rights to save it in the map and open it once, so thats not the problem, iseems that outlook locks the file after it is openen once.
3 security and ntfs permissions are ok, see 2
4 tried it from different pc's networks maps etc.
    5 done.
6 in a pst file the msg can be openen ore than once, but thats not the problem, tried and this works, but i need to save an email as an .msg file.
7 addins removed and doen all of that part, didn't help.
    We also have tried:
    -Installing all updates and ie8
-going back to xp sp2 (fresh install of xp)
Only thing that did work was an msg file attached to an email, we couldn't open that more then once,
but after  checking "Use exchange modus with cache" at the account properties we could open that more than once.
Now we need to be able to open the email's saved as .msg more then 1 time.

  • Saving Email as a .msg file on local machine

    Hi Everyone,
I have a requirement of reading an email from the INBOX folder and later save it as a .msg file on my local machine. Although, the file is getting created, I am unable to open it. However, when the file is saved as an .eml file, it works fine.
I have tried saving a .msg file from outlook and opening it, however, the problem is with the email file saved as .msg file using java.
Any suggestions on fixing this problem.
    Thanks,
    Nitin

    Hi nithin,
You can achieve this when the client send the message to you in octet streem then the par object contains the message subject as file name along with .msg files . if you store the same you can retrieve by using
    response.setcontenttype("octet-stream")
and retrieve the stored message in .msg extension. can you pleasse let us know hoe you are capturing the part and storing in PC , I mean which type of part you are trying to open whether the part object content in octet stream or message/RFC822 format. please let me know.

  • How to file an email as .msg file

i organise my important email as files in .msg format.
When i searched i came across an app email archiver which saves it as .eml.
Is there any way to save email as .msg file on SD card? I am ok to buy an app for this.
The msg file should contact attachment also, if the email has one.

    Sorry m8, my bad...
Okay, so the button is there but nothing happens when you click it.
    Try this:
-create a new user account on you computer, when you use Mail in the new account do you have the same issue?
If you don´t have the same issue
-switch back to your original user account. Go to ~/Library/Preferences/ rename com.apple.mail.plist to com.apple.mail.plistOLD
-open mail and try the To-Do button.

  • Extracting meta data from a email msg file.

    Hello,
I am looking for a powershell solution. I have a business need to save outlook emails (.msg files) to a document library and somehow extract the metadata from it. Metadata includes display name of the user who sent the email, email address, subject, attachment
and body. Have you worked on anything like this before? Perhaps some other form of document?
I haven't built anything like this before so as I googled (and binged) and came across the below link. After you cutomize the file location, the script does run but doesn't give any results. If and when this script will work, I need to figure out a way to export
it as a txt or csv file. Has any built such a script? If not then can you take a look at this powershell script and make any suggestions?
    https://jls3tech.wordpress.com/2013/09/21/msgextract-ps1-parses-metadata-of-msg-files/
    Thanks in advance.

You are best to get the "metadata" from the message before exporting it.
You will not find any scripts to do this as it is very much a custom request.
What kind of document library are you referring to.  If you mean SharePoint then there are many SharePoint add-ins that can display emails and their associated data.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • How can email internet headers be retained when rendering MSG files to PDF?

I am using Acrobat X Pro and it is a simple task to create a PDF rendition of an Outlook email message, either directly from Outlook using the Acrobat plug-in or by saving as an MSG file and then converting to PDF. However, all of the internet header metadata within the MSG file is lost. I've been told by someone from the PDF Association that it is possible to retain the internet header data when converting Outlook emails to PDF but cannot see how this can be done with Acrobat X Pro. Is this only possible with Acrobat XI or is another product or plug-in needed?

Unfortunately the entire header information isn't stored in the Outlook messsage. Because Outlook is a MAPI client, it doesn't store messages in native SMTP format.  So messages in Outlook are converted to MAPI, and the data is stored in a set of MAPI properties. You'll need to retrieve the properties in order to print them (or create a PDF). I've never tried it, but here is an example of a macro for Outlook that will attempt the following:
Retrieve the internet message headers from the original message and store them in the body of the new post item.
Add the subject and received time so that you can visually "see" that these headers go with the original item.
Attaches the original item to the new post.
Asks if you are ready to print both the new post item and the original together.

  • I am interested in downloading email attachment files directly to my App.

Looked at dropbox, pdf reader and other Apps which automatically appear as an option when you are trying to download an attachment in your Ipad email. What kind of method or functions that an App need to include so email programs can recognize it and show as an option when you try to download email attachment?
    Please help!

I've just installed it on my iMac (also Mt. Lion) but it didn't keep my settings from OpenOffice.org version 3.
By mucking around in the Library, I think I've at least gotten it to use my templates.
There's a user discussion list, and  I asked there about this, but so far have not heard back yet.
I've been using Open Office for years, and am quite happy with it; I also have MS office but that's bloated and cumbersome.
Pages (for $10 from the app store) is another interesting alternative for a word processor.

  • .msg files open in new tab or window, not with the default program

    Hello,
I am having an issue with .msg files not opening with the default program, Outlook. They are opening in a new tab and it is just a bunch of gibberish from the email header. Does anyone know how to force IE to open the .msg files in Outlook? They open fine
    in Chrome and Firefox.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
First I suggest we take a try in IE with no-addons.
    Follow the steps below:
    1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (with no add-ons)
    2. Press Shift, then right click Internet Explorer icon on taskbar, select run as administrator;
Please also take a verify that if the outlook is set to the default open program of .msg files:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs, find the .msg file and take a look.
Then we may try to use process monitor to track the root cause of this issue:
    The download link here:
    Process monitor
    And here is
a blog talking about how to use it:

    Hope this may help

  • Creating a .MSG file which has file attachments

    Hi
If I wanted to create a Word document or an Excel file, I would simply use cfcontent and then save the content to disk using cffile.
However, I now have a requirement whereby I would like to create a .MSG file.  (This is the equivalent, if you use MS Outlook, of saving an email that you have in your inbox to disc.)
My question is, how do you accomplish this?
I was thinking I could change the MIME type of the document to a type equivalent to MS outlook message files but how do include the attachments etc to the email?
Has anyone done something similar before? Ideas please?
    Thanks
    Michael

Changing the MIME type of a response doesn't magically convert the file format of the response, it just sets an HTTP header to reflect the desired MIME type.  What the browser does with that info is up to the browser, but when you save the file, it's still just plain text, unless you have specifically created the binary data that represents the file format you want (which it doesn't sound like you're doing).
So simply using CFCONTENT to indicate the MIME type is application/msword (etc) and saving downloaded data as a .doc file does not make it a Word file, unless the data you send down is in the Word binary format.  It's just a text file with a .doc extension.  Word will have a stab at converting it to Word format - in memory - when you open it, but until you resave it, the file is still just text.
The same applies to any other file format.  If you want to create an Outlook message file with attachments etc, you'll need to file the file format somewhere (and it's like to be proprietry, and not published, if it's a MS format), and replicate that.  No mean task.
Why are you trying to create a file representing a saved email message?  It's an uncommon requirement...

  • Can't open *.msg files from Windows

I am moving from PC to Mac and I used to store my e-mail messages as *.msg files in my hard drive and not Outlook 2011 nor Mail recognizes them so I can't open them, what can I do?

But what about if I want to view the attachments as well? I have Office for Mac 2011 and I've been trying to open some .msg files from Outlook 2007. I received them as files on a disk, and I was able to open them on my PC at work just fine. However, I can't open them on my Mac. I downloaded a free trial of Mail Raider (and a couple other programs, but none of them worked.) It only opens some of the files. They come out as a mess and the attachments aren't accessible. And the rest of the files just don't open at all, or sometimes it doesn't realize there are attachments. I was able to randomly extract one attachment and a jumbled email message, and that's my only success so far. I used the same method on another email/attachment and got nothing. According to what I've seen on Microsoft blogs/forums, it seems like Outlook 2011 should be able to open these files, so I shouldn't even need another program, right? Please help!

  • Converting Outlook .msg files to .one files

    Hello,
I am facing a few difficulties regarding the conversion of .msg files to .one files.
A colleague of mine is using around 200 .msg files which he could view on his phone but since that suddenly did not work, I am tasked with converting those .msg files to .one (or a file format that is compatible with OneNote).
I then encountered the possibility of converting .msg files to .pdf, but you can't edit .pdf files within OneNote (therefore requiring another conversion progress).
Also I'd like, if possible, to convert the .msg files in one large batch without having to click and convert every single one of them (could be done but would take a while though).
If there are any questions, feel free to ask!

    Hi,
I haven't found a method to directly convert .msg file to .one files. However, as a workaround, we can try inserting these .msg files as printouts in OneNote notebook. To do this, click Insert tab > File Printout button, then, hold Ctrl key and select
all the .msg files you want to import into OneNote. Click Insert button.

    Hello Steve,
I have already converted the Outlook notes to .doc format with a third party tool (it was a big hassle but I am one step closer to importing them in OneNote).
At the moment, I'm importing the Outlook notes into OneNote which will take a while since there around 270 notes.
I'll keep you posted when it's done or I have tried something else.
