Download error -228, tryed all methods still no solution except .xpi manual install, please help!
Hi,
Until last year i could normally d\load and install addons. Then i did an update to firefox 3 and it became impossible to update those installed addons or to d\load new ones.
I've followed all the advice here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable%20to%20install%20add-ons without any result even made a totally clean install of firefox. Still not able to install any plugin or theme, getting the message: "Firefox could not install the file at

I can go to the developers site to download the .xpi file and do a manual installation, but this has to be done for every addon and every theme, and every time i need to update those, so it's a pain in the back side.
Is there a solution to this problem?

Sometimes you only disable the user interface of security software, but the firewall services are still running in the background. So make sure that you give Firefox full access in the firewall.

When Firefox starts up it checks for add-on updates. Frequently I get "Firefox could not install the file at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/10868/forefox_sync-1.6.3-sm+fb+fx.xpi because Download error -228"
This one is for Firefox Sync; I get equivalent for any others for which updates were found.
I find all updates will apply, or none. It's never some do and some don't.Thanks for the link. Unfortunately this doesn't help because without changing any setting the update will eventually install be it a day or three later.
If updates were disabled, then they would remain disabled and no updates would ever install (& I'd expect a more relevant worded message), which is not the case.
I would expect Firefox to find updates to extensions only if they were compatible, or again tell me "not compatible" rather than a nondescript "download error" message.
I have Firefox auto-updating so am on the latest release (not beta) most of the time .. until it tells me to download the latest. -
Upgrading to Mountain Lion using free upgrade, download froze halfway, tried again and unable to use same code twice. Is there a way I can get a new code without having to submit other information (scan/photo of proof of purchase)?
Open the App Store and navigate to the Purchases tab. You should see Mountain Lion there. You can click there to restart the download.

hello all i have an issue with my hours app on my iphone4 when i touch to open it does not open, it flashes as if but then goes back to icon screen. whta the heck?
Have you tried closing the app completely and seeing if it works when you re-open it ? From the home screen (i.e. not with the My Hours app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the My Hours app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot. -
Trying to replace Yahoo from FF 7. Have tried all methods that I could find Including these:

It has to do with the Spotlight cache on the phone. There is no other way that I am aware of to clear that cache.

Download error -228 when using new Vizio router
Download error -228 using new Vizio router when trying to update plugins. It says I need to install them but when I hit install i get the error -228.
Update: still not working. I thought maybe it was an issue with this certain show (Big Love - Season 2), so I tried buying one episode of Fringe (another show I would like to get into) and the same problem continues. Finally, I bought one song to see if it was a file size/type issue, but nope. Can anyone please help me? This is really irritating... Will they still charge me for these even though I cannot download them?

Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data. Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!

I've tried all of the suggested solutions, but I still can't get my cd drive recognised on my laptop. If I delete the driver and reboot, the cd drive appears, but as soon as the driver automatically installs, the driver disappears into the Q: drive, which is not accessible and neither is the CD drive
I had the same or similar problem after installin iTunes 11 on my Acer Laptop with Vista. The new iTunes ran but I
completely lost access to my CdRom/DVD drive. Error Code 19 was displayed in Windows Device Manager. Found out
this is more widespread of a problem than expected. After trying several forum recommended fixes, the Only thing that gave me back my CdRom drive was doing a Windows Restore to a date prior to iTunes 11 install. I got my drive back but it also restored me to the prior 10.0.7.21 vers of iTunes which no longer worked due to missing files. iTunes help
recommended a Reinstall. I am reluctant to do that for several reason. That's where I am at for now until I find out if there are any other risks for using iTunes 11 vs. Registry Errors vs. Losing access to my CdRom drive. Brad -
my macbook pro running lion will not boot . it stays on the grey page with the cog spinning. I have tried all methods of booting to no avail. I have removed the bottom and taken out the battery and the ram . will this affect my applecare warranty. I had to try myself as I'm overseas for two months and nowhere near any sort of help .
there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up. Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests. But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum. there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc. -

When I try to install an Add-On, I get the following message:

This happens with ANY Add-On download. Theme or Add-On.See if this works. Try downloading the .xpi file for the add-on, to do that right-click on the installation link and choose "Save link as". Then in the Firefox menus choose "File > Open File" and open the .xpi file that you downloaded. That should install the add-on.

When trying to download or sync podcasts, I get an error code "you do not have the privilege to make changes". Please help! I tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling, but that did not work. Also, I rebooted and that didn't work, either.
I tried to use an external hard drive from my windows computer that was formatted in NTFS Windows format. Mac Pro sees that hard drive as "read only". Itunes works on existing media on the hard drive to play music or movies, but when you try to purchase from itunes store and download you get the above message. You need to move your library to a library that is formatted in exFAT format (which can be used both by "windows" and mac computers.

The iTune cannot detect my iPhone 4S. I have already tried all methods suggested, including re-installling iTune, re-activating Apple Mobile Device, plugging in various USB ports, and etc. I use windows 7. How can I solve this?
The new cable is completely new, and my computer can detect the phone as a drive, and battery charging is ok. So I believe the USB cable works properly. It is so weird that just iTune itself cannot detect the phone, and it is of the most updated version. What else can I do? Thanks.
