Download error Firefox won't force quit

Downloaded an image from Ancestry.com, trying to save it to my hard drive. Got "Download Error" /......jpg could not be saved because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location. [OK]
Clicking the OK button does nothing.
Tried Cancel in the save window, nothing. Created a new folder to save the doc to, still same error.
Tried Force Quit of Firefox. Doesn't work.
Any suggestions how to kill the "save file" function?

Try quitting it with Activity Monitor. Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), select Firefox and force quit the process. You can also do it pressing Alt, Command and Esc keys.
If this doesn't work, press Control, Command and Eject keys to force the restart, and if nothing works, hold the Power button until your MacBook Pro turns off

  • Speedgrade won't force quit.  Cannot restart my computer

So I opened Speedgrade CS6 and it crashed and won't force quit.  I cannot see the work area but the icon is open in the dock and I cannot open any other Speedgrade project or even restart my computer for that matter.  It's just frozen there.
Anyone else had this problem before?  Any fixes or solutions?
    Thanks!

When you uninstall firefox, do you go to the control panel and in C:/ProgramFiles/(delete mozilla firefox)? Or only one of the two options?Try.

  • Itunes won't open, won't force quit, won't anything

This problem started about a month ago and now it's critical.
When I click the itunes icon, it bounces and then freezes. itunes won't open. It also won't force quit. I can't shut down because, it says, itunes won't quit. I have to hold down the power button 7 seconds to shut down and then restart. My IT guy at work (who is a Mac person) showed me how to repair permissions and the first half dozen or so times this happened, that worked. Now it won't. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. I've tried reinstalling and repairing permissions. I've rebooted and repaired and reinstalled.
This is the kind of thing I switched from PCs to get away with.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really need to be able to use itunes.
    Thanks,
    Teresa

Here are some basic to try in turn, see if any one will help:
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime and iTunes.
    1. Delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    2. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • PS CS3 Crashes and Won't Force Quit

Using Mac OS X 10.5.2 and latest PS. PS crashes and won't force quit. I have to reboot. Then after opening PS again and barely start editing a file (nothing else is running and I have 4GB ram) PS crashes again.
Also the reset password function on the Adobe site refuses to work and I can't get any support. This is getting really frustrating.

I assume you trashed your preferences? Look in your user Library/Preferences folder and delete your com.adobe.Photoshop.plist file where your preferences are stored. Other than that, I have no clue. Did you try editing different files to see if it could be just that one file giving you problems? I have been using PS CS3 for the past three days, and I have noticed a lot of instability which I didn't have with PS 7. Of course, new machine, new programs, I was expecting a few glitches, but hopefully the dust will settle soon and my workflow will become stable again.

  • My iTunes won't force quit and says it's still syncing my iPhone after hours of syncing.

My iTunes won't force quit and says it's still syncing my iPhone after hours of syncing. I had plugged in my iPhone 4S in the morning before I left for school, it synced almost completely, and then it got stuck on "Finishing Sync". I pulled my iPhone out because I had to leave to go to school, and iTunes is still stuck on "Finishing Sync". I tried force quitting and restarting but it's of no use. Now I can't use iTunes at all.

Scratch that, I TRIED to shut down but I guess iTunes overrided it because it still thinks it's syncing

  • Iphoto frozen, won't force quit - but pretends to!

Iphoto has simply frozen, won't force quit and hides until I call up all open windows by squeezing the mouse buttons - it shows as a window with a blue highlight all around.  Not sure whats happened.  Tried connecting camera and importing, but wont open - still stays hidden from view.  Also tried synching Iphone but same happens.  Small dot shows Iphoto as open, but nowhere to be seen until I squeeze the mouse - then the highlighted window pops up, but doesn;t allow me to do anything and disappears as soon as I let go of the ouse buttons. Help please....

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Safari hangs and won't force quit

I tried searching for this but the problem prevented that.
After repairing my permissions yesterday, Safari won't let me do certain things like right-clicking an image or goto various sites or let my use tabbed browsing. I just get stuck with the spinning beachball.
If I try to force quit Safari just disappears from the force quit menu while still existing in the Dock and in the background. I tried running top to get the process id and kill it but I couldn't find Safari in there.
I really need some help on this as I have to hand in an assignment online on monday.
    Anyone got some ideas?

  • Google Chrome locks up and won't force quit

Something is off with my MacBook.  I'm running OS X 10.5.8 Google Chrome routinely locks up when browsing Facebook sites.  And lately once Chrome is locked up even a Force Quit will not close the program.  When Chrome encounters a problem running a script and becomes unresponsive mac mail locks up too and often crashes then crashes on launch 8 or nine times in a row then runs fine until Google Chrome locks up again.  I suspected malware so downloaded iAntivirus which found nothing and ClamXav which found 4 problem e-mails in my junk folder all of which had never been open and I quickly trashed.  But the problem continues.

This won't help with your problem, but never move or delete e-mail files manually or allow your AV software to do so. This will corrupt your mailbox index which could result in additional e-mails being lost. More imprortantly, if you have an IMAP account or a POP account where you leave messages on the server, those same messages will just be downloaded to your computer again the next time you check for new mail. Always delete e-mail from your e-mail client application. If this it's a g-mail account you will need to take an extra step of using webmail in your browser to permanently delete any e-mail.

  • Excel won't force quit and won't open.

I'm on Yosemite.  No problems at first.  But now if I try to open an excel file I get the error message "The application “Microsoft Excel” is not open anymore."  I get the same message when I try to open the application from the applications folder.  Excel appears in the Force Quit options but won't disappear when I force quit it.  That's about the limit of my troubleshooting, any ideas?

OK I turned my mac off and on (as per the IT Crowd) - it worked  :0/

  • ITunes won't force quit and is hanging after update

OK, so I downloaded the new update for my iPhone. While it said preparing to install it took a long time. I figured it was frozen so I did a force quit. Now I'm stuck. I can't get into my iPhone because it is showing a picture of the plug going into iTunes logo.
I can't force quit itunes either. It just doesn't do anything. I tried rebooting and iTunes is still "open" and won't respond.
    Any help would be appreciated

I seemed to have gotten it to finally disappear after rebooting again and again. Though it sent my phone into recovery mode so I'm working on that

  • Applications won't force quit

I'm having an issues with apps freezing and not being able to force quit them.
So far it's happened with: Finder, iChat, iTunes, textmate, coda, photoshop, firefox, safari.... and maybe a few more i can't remember.
    I'm running:
    I'm on Mac Intel g5 OS X 10.5.5
    Processor 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual Core
    2 gigs Ram
    2 internal ata disks
1 external back up drive (for time machine)
The only way to get the application(s) that have quit is to hard restart the computer. I've tried checking and repairing permissions on all my hard disks as well as verifying disks. I've also done a clean install of OSX 10.5, same issues, didn't help anything.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I've encountered this problem, and though I don't have a fix, I might be able to shed some light on what's actually happening and why OS X can't force-quit the app.
During this summer, I had periodic problems with Entourage when it was unable to connect to my mail server. It would display an error dialog that I couldn't close. If I attempted to force-quit Entourage quickly enough, it teminated, but if I waited too long, I wasn't able to force-quit the app. At this point, things got worse. The longer I waited, the less likely I was able to terminate or force-quit any of my other apps, as well. So I learned that once Entourage got into its error state, it was important to force-quit it as soon as possible. After one of the system restarts I had to do due to this, I took a look in the system console, and saw a lot of messages that reported that Entourage was leaking memory (allocating system memory and not releasing it). This explained why if I waited too long, that Entourage was probably allocating so much memory for itself that there was not enough for any other app (or the operating system itself) to use in order to function. Fortunately for me, the upgrade to 10.5.5 made this problem go away. But if you encounter this problem, it might be useful to check the system console to see what was happening leading up to the time you had to restart the system. It may be that the culprit isn't the app you couldn't force-quit, but some other app that's misbehaving and preventing other apps from getting the resources they need to run properly.
    Hope this helps,
    Ken

  • HT1725 I have downloads that have a download error, and won't download. How do I delete them

How do I delete podcasts and movies that won't download due to download error?

AHA, you have Firmware password protection in Mac OS X , disable it & try Option/alt...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.

  • Documents downloaded via Firefox won't print or appear in preview

Documents opened with Firefox won't print or even appear in preview. The document can be viewed but won't print. When trying to print (or see in preview) only a blank page appears. This happens even when the document is saved or made a PDF file. This began with 3.6.13 and continues with 3.6.15. Curiously, documents saved or made a PDF before this began ~ 2 weeks ago can be still be printed and viewed in preview. I'm using an iMac with OS X 10.6.6 and a CanonMX 300 printer

    Hi Lidia.C,
I understand that you are passionate about fixing this issue and I am sorry that it is so difficult to print.
It is possible to change the default program that reads pdfs if it does not work from adobe. This can be done from the "3bar" > Options > Applications menu. [[Set how Firefox handles different types of files]]
Does downloading the file and saving it first, then opening the file in another program allow you to print in the meantime?
If there is a lockfile in the profile, it may be that preferences are not allowed to be changed. [[How to fix preferences that won't save]]
    I hope this helps.
