Download file from the web

Hey,
I'm struggling to download files from the web.
The first approach I though of was simply opening the url in Safari, but it would just open the file, not download it.
Then there is an application called "URL Access Scripting", but I can't figure out how it works.
That might sound stupid, since it has only a download and an upload command, but they do not work.
The download function asks for a file specification, what the #$^& is that?
I tried supplying a file, but to no avail.
For obvious reasons I can't make an alias of a not yet existing file, so what do I put in there?
It seems file specification is a deprecated format.
My last resort was running curl in a shell script, which works, but that feels hackish.
Is there any good way to do this?

Hi pepsel,
Let's take an example. Suppose that you want to download “UltiCalc Mac 2.5” (freeware) from [this Web page|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/utilities/ulticalcmac.html]. You can proceed as follows:
--BEGINNING OF SCRIPT
set theURL to "http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=23023&cat=25&platf orm=osx&method=sa/ulticalc_mac.zip"
set theFile to "/Users/pierre/Desktop/My_download.zip" -- same extension as the file to download
tell application "URL Access Scripting" to download theURL to theFile
--END OF SCRIPT
Of course, you should replace “pierre” with the name of your own home folder.
Hope it can help.

  • I am having problems downloading files from the web. After a number of files are downloaded, the system become sluggish, and then hangs. I traced the problem to the download history file: downloads.sqlite.

    After downloading a number of 1.0 MB files, the system became very sluggish, and I started to get lots of (Not Responding) messages when trying to download or just use Firefox for browsing. Using Performance Monitor, I observed that the Firefox executable was growing larger and larger - up to as large as 1.2 GB on a system with 2.0 GB memory. Page faults were off the chart.
    Looking for a similar problem, I found one that discussed the downloads.sqlite file becoming corrupted. I first noticed that this file was over 600 MB in size, so I deleted it. I then downloaded additional files, and observed that the new downloads.sqlite file would increase in size by about 150% of the size of each file that was downloaded. Once it would get up to 500 MB in size, the system started slowing down again.
    I don't know the purpose of this file, but it appears that it keeps a full copy of every file downloaded, which may be the function of a download history file, but it does not seem correct that the file should grow in size without limit, and thus impact the system.
    I would also appear that the Firefox executable is trying to read the entire contents of this file each time a new file is downloaded, which does not seem right.
    Temporary fix is to periodically delete the downloads.sqlite file when it gets too large and starts impacting performance.. Apparently it is smart enough to open a new file if the old one is not found. I am not sure what the correct behavior for this file should be. Apparently is does not re-initialize when a new Firefox session is initiated.
    Please feel free to contact me if more information is desired. I'm not sure what details you might need to troubleshoot this type of problem.

    Hi Katy, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    What is the exact name of the file?
    Is it aim.bin?
    Which requires either Stuffit Expander, or the Unarchiver to deflate.

  • Help required with downloading files from inside WEB-INF folder

    I am working on a web application and I have an upload script which uploads different files to a foler called 'uploads' . To stop users from accessing the folder content I have put it in the /WEB-INF/.
    In my JSP file, I used to link to the uploaded files like this before for users to download them :
    if(filesListIterator.hasNext()
    files = (FilesBean)filesListIterator.next();
    <tr><td><a target="_new" href="<%=files.getFileName()%>">"<%=files.getFileName()%></a></td></tr>
    }I need to know how to alter the above link to make it access/download files from the /WEB-INF/uploads/ while still restricting direct access to the files.
    Thanks

    Anything under WEB-INF is not directly accessible via the browser/ client. You could try defining the JSP/ Servlet inside web.xml deployment descriptor and see if you can access the file from there.
    I think a better way to accomplish this would be to keep the file outside WEB-INF , and use other techniques to protect the folder that contains the file - for example password-protection, or defining a .htaccess file and serving a 403 Forbidden error.

  • When I download something from the Web, the "Downloads" window opens, but the window remains blank. Before it used to at least show the name of the file and I could open the file from the "Downloads" window. Is there a way to get this functionality back?

    I'm running Windows XP which is updated to latest version (which I think might be Service Pack 3, but not positive.) Mozilla Firefox is version 5.0. I tend to use Google as my search engine so most of the stuff I download comes through sites found through Google, which is also updated.
    At some time in the past (maybe a few versions ago) when I would download a file from the Web, the "Downloads" window would open and in the window would be displayed the name of the file I was downloading or had just completed downloading. I think I used to be able to then click on that file name and the file (or the installation file if needed to start the new program) would open. I am currently using Firefox 5.0 (the "About Firefox" screen says this is up to date) and when I download a file or document, the "Downloads" window appears on the screen as it always has in the past, but it remains blank, i.e., nothing appears in the downloads box. I don't remember making any configuration changes, etc., that may have caused the window to remain blank, but I could be mistaken. I know how to find the items I've downloaded (My Documents / Downloads) and can usually guess what the name of the downloaded file might be, but it used to be much easier when something (anything) showed up in the downloads window.
    I'd love for someone to tell me about a simple fix for this. I'm willing to be quite embarrassed that I did something I shouldn't have.'''

    In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
    To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

    Hi Gurus

    compared to the saved file name of the document downloaded.
    Clarity
    1. Download any pdf file from the web
    2. Click File, Save as note the populated File Name
    3. Compare the populated file name with the saved file name of the documant yuo are downloading.
    4. The file Name is incorrect...
    Is there any work around on this issue? Can someone please help?..
    OS:Windows7
    Reader: Adobe Reader X
    I've tried a couple of other versions and still get the same results...

    Are you downloading the file (right-click, save link as), or just opening it by clicking it?
    If the latter, then what happens is the file is loaded to the temporary internet files folder by IE and assigned a temporary name, which is then used when you're trying to save it.
    You can test this out by going to File - Document Properties before trying to save and looking at the file's location.

  • When i download a file from the web i get "Anti-Virus Program not found " message. This has been happening since I change anti-virus programs for CA etrust to Sophos. How do I get Firefox to recognise my new Anti-virus program?

    every time i download a file from the web (ie. a PDF file) i get "Anti-Virus Program not found " message. This has been happening since I changed anti-virus programs for CA etrust to Sophos. How do I get Firefox to recognise my new Anti-virus program?

    That is a very good warning provided by the Download Statusbar extension. Something like that should been built into Firefox. I filed this Bug report a couple of years ago, about the lack of a warning like that. <br />
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480855 <br />
    I have looked everywhere that I can think of to find a list of '''IOfficeAntiVirus providers''' ''(as mentioned in the Bug report)'' that will work with Firefox, so I can't answer that for you.
    You might want to ask the developer of the Download Statusbar extension about it. He might know which AV programs are compatible with the Windows API that Firefox uses for the download scan. <br />

  • Adobe 8 - Unexpected Corrupt or incorrect file type warning when viewing a PDF file from the Web

    Hi,
    On downloading a PDF file from my web site using Adobe 8 on the client machine I expect the file to open automatically however I receive encounter the "File Download" dialog. It has the following warning message: "The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download."
    This issue did not occur within previously tested versions of Adobe Reader (e.g. Version 5.1).
    On investigating the issue I discovered the factor that results in Adobe 8 failing to open the file automatically is the Content-Type = "application/pdf; Charset=utf-8". However, if I intercept the response and alter the Content-Type to contain only "application/pdf;" the issue on Adobe 8 does not occur.
    I have even tested when the Content-Type contains an empty Charset (i.e. "application/pdf; Charset=") but this issue still occurs. In addition setting the Charset to other encodings (e.g. "ISO-LATIN-7", "iso-8859-1") the issue occurs.
    QUESTION(s):
    1. Why is it necessary for Adobe 8 when opening PDF files from the web to expect no Charset within the Content-Type?
    2. If this was not an issue within previous versions of Adobe surly this is a bug?
    Since I cannot ensure that the Response's Content-Type does not contain a Charset at all please can someone suggest either a work-around or more importantly a solution to the issue?
    Please Note:-
    1. Within Adobe, Edit -> Preferences -> Internet option it's compulsory for our users to have "Display PDF in browser" ticked!
    2. We cannot prevent a Charset from being present within the Content-Type of the response sent to the client, hence this issue.
    Many Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

    Bill,
    This is exactly the same behavior I observed when I rendered a PDF stored in a database through a .NET page. If I chose to save it, it would open fine after the save, but if I chose to open it in the browser without saving it, I would get the error.
    The problem was not with the PDF or Acrobat. It was with the way I was delivering the PDF. Putting the following code before my binarywrite fixed the issue completely:
    Response.ClearHeaders()
    Response.ClearContent()
    Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
    Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + saveFilename)
    where saveFileName is the name you want to give the PDF.
    You can use 'inline' instead of 'attachment' above if you just want the PDF to open (no option to save first). You can also use 'pdf' instead of 'octet-stream' (not sure the difference).
    The trouble seems to be that .NET puts some info in the header and/or content by default prior to anything your code says to write. If you don't clear this, IE has an issue with it. Other browsers seem to ignore it.
    Bottomline is that this is an issue the website programmer needs to fix and is not something the user can fix by changing some setting(s).
    I hope this helps.

  • My iphoto library has become unreadable. I am wondering if I shoudl delete iphoto and reinstall? Can I download iphoto from the web? I bought my computer in February of this year. Do I have to buy a new copy of iphoto?

    My iphoto library has become unreadable. I am wondering if I shoudl delete iphoto and reinstall? Can I download iphoto from the web? I bought my computer in February of this year. Do I have to buy a new copy?

    It's probably the library that's the prolem and not the application. Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create and open a new library then your existing library is damaged.
    If that's the case, Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How to download pictures from the web with their URLs?

    How do you download pictures from the Web so that they automatically have their URL addresses in their "Comments" section of the Get Info window? I thought Safari did this automatically, but it's not happening for me.

    Graham--
    When you say to open the image in another window, do you mean another Safari window? When I do and right click on the image, I don't get the "Inspect Element" option. I have tried your other suggestion, and that doesn't work either.
    So.... I'm still puzzled...
    I am also working in the same version of Safari (4.0.4) but this may be because I have the "Develop" menu (between Bookmarks and Window). If you do not, that will not be available to you. I can tell you how to get this, but as a newer user, this may be (for now) more information than you want.
    However, if you do open that image in a new window, the toolbar will display the URL of the image.
    As to the other solution, I may not have explained this clearly enough. Let me suggest another route to the same idea. With an image in a web page, drag it to the desktop. When it is on the desktop, highlight the image (click once) and then use the Finder > File menu and the item, Get Info. The large panel that opens will give the URL and this works for any file downloaded from the internet, which makes it a useful security check too.
    All the best.

  • Downloading .mp3s from the Web

    Hi all,
    I've just encountered a slight problem on my BlackBerry 9800 Torch when downloading .mp3 files from the web.
    What I often do is send the files to my Gmail address from my computer as attached files, then login to Gmail from my BB and download them onto my device there.
    Thing is, it doesn't always work : some files go to the music section (which is where I expect and intend them to appear) but some mysteriously disappear, don't know where to look to find them.
    Has anyone ever encountered this problem before? If so, any help would be greatly appreciated !
    Thanks
    EDIT : I ended up finding them when I connected my device to my computer. Doesn't expalin where they went on the phone but at least I found them !

    It's Safari 4 not Quicktime that causes this... Safari 4 doesn't support downloading non-embedded media. Safari now supports html 5 might be the reason why. Media in html 5 isn't handle by plugins. Use Firefox instead.

  • Lately pdf files from the Web do not display properly; what is wrong and how can I fix it so I don't have to use IE?

    I am a professor and frequently need to open pdfs of academic journal articles from electronic databases. Within the last two or three weeks, when I try to do this using Firefox, only the first page of the pdf displays and the rest are blank. In addition, a bar appears across the top with the message "This pdf file may not display properly." So I have had to switch to Internet Explorer to open the files and do my research. What is going on and how can I fix it so I can open pdf files from the Web in Firefox and have them display properly?

    My question is simple - why would you put an application in production that has a lot of bugs? To replace a good and steady Adobe product? My customers will believe that I put a pathetic fallible form online. They are not sophisticated on computers so I just tell them to use IE. Ugh
    I must agree with pgwebgirl!

    Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
    Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
    Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
    If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
    What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
    FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
    BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
    Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.
