Download folder along bottom of desktop lost

I have lost the download folder on the bottom of the desktop. How can I get it back please?
Martyn

Hi Martyn:
That is easy (I have done that myself)!
Open your home location. Drag the downloads folder you see there to its location on the dock. That actually creates a pointer to the actual folder.

open your home folder in a finder window and drag the Downloads folder back to the right side of the dock.

  • Downloads folder disappeared from the desktop?

    Hello!
Mavericks user here. Today I was trying to find the downloads folder, you know the folder where all newly downloaded files end up on the right lower border of the screen, and are beautifully filed with the newest download at the bottom.
So for some reason I moved the folder to finder, and it disappeared from the desktop. It is not in finder either. When I searched for it on finder I found the folder again, putted it back on the desktop, but now the downloads are ordered alpahabetically when I download a new file, it looks different.
How do I restore the folder on the desktop in such a way the the newest files come at the bottom?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

putted it back on the desktop,
Do you mean in your Dock?
If so, right-click (CTRL-click) > Sort by > Date Added
If you mean you actuall moved it to your Desktop or created and alias then open the folder, Click the Arrange icon:
    and select Date Added

  • Can I remove download folder from desktop without deleting

My Downloads folder has gotten on my desktop and now to remove it I have to put it in the trash and lose all my downloads. Is there something else I can do? It is already on my dock and in finder, but once I put the download folder from the desktop in the trash it removes my downloads from finder and the dock.

Open a Finder window and navigate to your User directory (it will typically have folders including Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures). Click the arrow to the left of Desktop and you should see the Downloads folder that is currently on your desktop. Drag that Downloads folder (or the Downloads folder on your desktop -- they are the same) to the blank space in the Finder window below the other folders -- i.e., below Documents, Movies, etc.)

  • Downloads folder lost in trash. I managed to drag it from Home but now...

Downloads folder lost in trash. I managed to drag it from Home but now every download shows up twice, one in the download stack and another in the trash can. What can I do to stop downloads from showing up in the trash can?

I did it already. The thing is that, since I put the "downloads stack folder" into the trash, and the emptied it, the downloads (from safari) keep showing up in both: the downloads folder (the one I dragged from "Home" to fix my accident) and the trash. The trash looks empty but it is like the computer detects a "download folder" in the trash, that I can't see.

  • Safari puts a copy of downloads onto my desktop even though i have the downloads folder specified as the save downloads to location in Safari preferences. How can I stop this from happening?

I dont' want to have to keep manually moving each download off of the desktop. The downloads folder is selected as the location where i would like downloads to go. They are downloaded there but an additional copy keeps showing up on my desktop. Help!

What are dmgs? I downloaded Microsoft Silverlight and the icon showed up on my desktop. I tried moving it to trash but it wanted to delete the whole program instead of just a shortcut. I opened the general tab in Finder's preferences and the only options that were selected to show up on desktop were External Drives and Cds, Dvds, and Ipods. THanks so much!

  • Is there a way of displaying  the various item in my Downloads folder as icons arranged in order of Date Created, such that the most recent items appear at the bottom, rather than the top?

Is there a way of displaying  the various item in my Downloads folder as icons arranged in order of Date Created, such that the most recent items appear at the bottom, rather than the top? I know this can be done when they are displayed as a list, but I want icons!

    Hi geezer,
when you open your 'Downloads' folder choose 'View'  in the Menu bar and choose:
    'as List'
    'Show View Options'
In 'View options' window you tick:
    'Always open in list view'
    'Date Modified', or
    'Date created'
Now inside the 'Downloads' folder click on 'Date Created' (or 'Date Modified')
column to get items alined from oldest to newest date (or reverse)…

  • I lost my Download Stacks option. Now it is just a Download folder. Need to find out how to get the Download Stacks option back. Previous answers to this question don't make any sense to me. Please help in explicit detail. PS I'm using Mountain Lion.

Need to know how to get it back to its original Download Stack. Previous answers to this questionin Apple Support just don't make any sense to me. I'd appreciate explicit directions on how to restore this feature. Currently it's just a Download folder... must have accidently poofed it away.
    Help!

And if what WZZZ suggests doesn't work (and hopefully it will) move the file name below to the desktop, log out or restart and the Dock preferences with its defaults should be recreated. You'll need to re-configure it as you like it:
    com.apple.dock.plist
It's located: in Finder hold the Alt/Option key and from the Go menu select Library>Preferences.
If it fixes things, delete the file on your desktop.

  • How do I change my preferences to save downloads to my desktop, instead of a User's download folder?

How do I change my preferences to save downloads to my desktop, instead of an internal User's download folder? I have an older Mac Mini & recently upgraded the operating system to 10.5.8.

I presuming you're using the default Internet Browser, Safari.
    Choose Safari → Preferences
         Alternatively, press Command+, (comma).
Click the General tab; then click the Save Downloaded Files To pop-up menu and choose Other.
Navigate to and select the location where you want the files stored and click Select.
Click the Close button to exit Preferences.

  • Download folder "List" starts at the bottom instead of top

    Hello,
I have my "download" folder in the dock, and it is set to "list" the items in a "stack" according to the "date added."  In Snow Leopard when I woud click on the folder in the dock it would start at the top of the list with the newest items first.  However with Lion it always starts the list at the very bottom.  Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    FP

    My settings are this:
And it does display the newest items at the top:
Confirmed by opening the download folder in Finder and sorting by date added:

  • Download folder on doc lost

I accidentally removed the download folder from my doc. When I used the folder from my account file it wasn't the same (opens on the doc like the documents folder). How do I get the downloads folder back?

I'm also a new user and had the same problem.
The answer is double-click on the hard drive icon (e.g. Macintosh HD), expand the Users folder and then expand your username.
You should see a (your) Downloads folder and you simply drag it to the Dock. Having said that, there is a trick to it as you can inadvertently drag a copy to the desktop.
When you drag the icon to the dock (e.g. between the Documents folder icon and the Trash icon), make sure the icons separate from each other, indicating that the icons are "making room" for a new icon. Then let go of the mouse button.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downloads never finalized, stuck in downloads folder

To fully diagnose this problem, I will start from the beginning I noticed something a bit 'off' about iTunes.
i was browsing the iTunes Store, looking for a good mix of music to buy, adding to the Wish List, blah blah blah. I left the computer running for a few hours while I was away, then came back to complete the process.
When I came back, I noticed that whenever I would load a page, the 'Accessing iTunes Store' progress bar would not fill up all the way. It would reach about 85% across, then just stop. I had no problem with it as I was able to browse the pages just fine, but it wouldn't go away. I then proceeded to purchase the music.
After the first 2 finished downloading, I went to start playing them. They showed up in the Music library, no errors or anything, but nothing happened when I double-clicked on the song. iTunes didn't even crash. I went to the song info, looked at the location, and saw it was in <iTunes Media Folder>\Downloads\Artist - Album.tmp\download.m4a
I went to the downloads folder, and both songs were there, each with their own directory. There was also a list.plist file in Downloads. I immediately paused all the downloads, quit iTunes, relaunched it, and tried again. The songs were still behaving the same, but when I continued the downloads, they finalized and went to their proper directories (<iTunes Media Folder>\Music\Artist\Album\Song.m4a). The first two just would not play. So I tried moving the downloads folder to the desktop so they wouldn't be lost, removed the songs from the library (they now had the little gray exclamation point), and checked available downloads. Nothing. They weren't even in the Purchases list.
I go to play the files with QuickTime, and it gives me:
Error -2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie (download.m4a)
If you (an Apple tech) check my Apple ID, it's the last purchase I made. 2 albums and 3 other songs.
    I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, iTunes 10.5.0.142
All I want to know is how to get the songs back into the library without having to pay for them again. You can tell me in computer jargon, I'm very good with them.

    Never mind, problem solved.
If you are having this problem, I suggest you go to your receipt that got emailed to you, click on 'report a problem', and follow the steps. State simply what happened: download failed, corrupt file. The support team answers very promptly.

  • Can't find downloads folder since i updated

Through Blackberry Desktop Software I updated my Curve and it changed everything.  I hate my phone now but my biggest problem is that no matter where I look I can't find my downloads folder.  I even went to options-->homescreen preferences-->downloads folder-->from here it doesn't matter where i put it i can't find it.  i also no longer have an option for what theme i can use.  it only has one which is new and i hate.  the two that were default on my phone when i bought it are gone and i can't find the ones i've downloaded from Blackberry App World along the way either.  That's why I thought if I could just find my download folder I could maybe find my themes I had previously and use them.  HELP!

I've had a quite similar issue, and I've solved it by deleting the custom command set preference file (user/library/Application SUpport/ Aperture/ Comands set/)
Not sure if it'll solve your problem, but it deserves a try

  • Time Machine isn't backing up my Downloads folder

I went to restore a file from my "Downloads" folder, while connected to my Time Machine external drive and when I browse for the file every file or folder in my "Downloads" folder is greyed out and don't even look like files.
Downloads is not listed in the section of excluded files.
Anybody got any insight? Here's a picture:

I'm not having any problems with any other folders that I'm aware of. Just poked around some other folders in backups, both internal backups and on the external and they are fine.
Downloads shows "0 files" at the bottom of the window in any of the backups, both externals and internals.
Moved a copy of Mountain Lion from the desktop to the Downloads folder, then did a manual backup. Here is the output I got from the backup buddy in my dashboard:
Starting manual backupBackup failed with error: 19Starting manual backupBacking up to: /Volumes/The Monopoly Guy/Backups.backupdbUsing file event preflight for SpeedyWill copy (1.7 MB) from SpeedyFound 150 files (4.76 GB) needing backup6.61 GB required (including padding), 84.92 GB availableCopied 2579 files (38.7 MB) from volume Speedy.Using file event preflight for SpeedyWill copy (Zero KB) from SpeedyFound 20 files (Zero KB) needing backup902.1 MB required (including padding), 84.88 GB availableCopied 1391 files (677 bytes) from volume Speedy.Created new backup: 2012-12-14-161604Starting post-backup thinningNo post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups existBackup completed successfully.
And going back into time machine, that file is not available for restoring.

  • Contents of Downloads folder wiped out???

I have just migrated my data to my new mountain lion install from my time machine backup.
All of the old files I had in my ~/Downloads folder have now been wiped out, and to top it off, My old time machine backup no longer shows anything under Backups.backupdb
This really *****, as I seem to have lost all of my timemachine history.
    Any ides?
    Thanks,
    Doug

OK, these two lines have clued me in.
    drwxr-xr-x+ 5 root     staff   170 Aug 10  2011 Backups.backupdb/
    $ ll /Volumes/Time\ Machine\ Backups/Backups.backupdb/
    $
The first shows that there are 5 entries in the directory, the second should have immediately clued me in as ther is no '.' or '..' listed.
It is a permissions issue on how TM directories are restricted.  Bottom line is that my data is there, so that is very good.
That still leaves the way my Downloads folder was blown away by the ML upgrade/Data Migration.  I am fairly confidant that it got blown away after I ran Safari, most likely something to do with the new sandboxing.
