open your home folder in a finder window and drag the Downloads folder back to the right side of the dock.

    Hi Martyn:
That is easy (I have done that myself)!
Open your home location. Drag the downloads folder you see there to its location on the dock. That actually creates a pointer to the actual folder.

  • Downloads folder disappeared from the desktop?

    Hello!
Mavericks user here. Today I was trying to find the downloads folder, you know the folder where all newly downloaded files end up on the right lower border of the screen, and are beautifully filed with the newest download at the bottom.
So for some reason I moved the folder to finder, and it disappeared from the desktop. It is not in finder either. When I searched for it on finder I found the folder again, putted it back on the desktop, but now the downloads are ordered alpahabetically when I download a new file, it looks different.
How do I restore the folder on the desktop in such a way the the newest files come at the bottom?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Do you mean in your Dock?
If so, right-click (CTRL-click) > Sort by > Date Added
If you mean you actuall moved it to your Desktop or created and alias then open the folder, Click the Arrange icon:
    and select Date Added

  • Can I remove download folder from desktop without deleting

My Downloads folder has gotten on my desktop and now to remove it I have to put it in the trash and lose all my downloads. Is there something else I can do? It is already on my dock and in finder, but once I put the download folder from the desktop in the trash it removes my downloads from finder and the dock.

Open a Finder window and navigate to your User directory (it will typically have folders including Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures). Click the arrow to the left of Desktop and you should see the Downloads folder that is currently on your desktop. Drag that Downloads folder (or the Downloads folder on your desktop -- they are the same) to the blank space in the Finder window below the other folders -- i.e., below Documents, Movies, etc.)

  • Safari puts a copy of downloads onto my desktop even though i have the downloads folder specified as the save downloads to location in Safari preferences. How can I stop this from happening?

I dont' want to have to keep manually moving each download off of the desktop. The downloads folder is selected as the location where i would like downloads to go. They are downloaded there but an additional copy keeps showing up on my desktop. Help!

What are dmgs? I downloaded Microsoft Silverlight and the icon showed up on my desktop. I tried moving it to trash but it wanted to delete the whole program instead of just a shortcut. I opened the general tab in Finder's preferences and the only options that were selected to show up on desktop were External Drives and Cds, Dvds, and Ipods. THanks so much!

  • Is there a way of displaying  the various item in my Downloads folder as icons arranged in order of Date Created, such that the most recent items appear at the bottom, rather than the top?

Is there a way of displaying  the various item in my Downloads folder as icons arranged in order of Date Created, such that the most recent items appear at the bottom, rather than the top? I know this can be done when they are displayed as a list, but I want icons!

    Hi geezer,
when you open your 'Downloads' folder choose 'View'  in the Menu bar and choose:
    'as List'
    'Show View Options'
In 'View options' window you tick:
    'Always open in list view'
    'Date Modified', or
    'Date created'
Now inside the 'Downloads' folder click on 'Date Created' (or 'Date Modified')
column to get items alined from oldest to newest date (or reverse)…

  • How do I change my preferences to save downloads to my desktop, instead of a User's download folder?

How do I change my preferences to save downloads to my desktop, instead of an internal User's download folder? I have an older Mac Mini & recently upgraded the operating system to 10.5.8.

I presuming you're using the default Internet Browser, Safari.
    Choose Safari → Preferences
         Alternatively, press Command+, (comma).
Click the General tab; then click the Save Downloaded Files To pop-up menu and choose Other.
Navigate to and select the location where you want the files stored and click Select.
Click the Close button to exit Preferences.

  • Download folder "List" starts at the bottom instead of top

    Hello,
I have my "download" folder in the dock, and it is set to "list" the items in a "stack" according to the "date added."  In Snow Leopard when I woud click on the folder in the dock it would start at the top of the list with the newest items first.  However with Lion it always starts the list at the very bottom.  Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    FP

    My settings are this:
And it does display the newest items at the top:
Confirmed by opening the download folder in Finder and sorting by date added:

  • Can't find downloads folder since i updated

Through Blackberry Desktop Software I updated my Curve and it changed everything.  I hate my phone now but my biggest problem is that no matter where I look I can't find my downloads folder.  I even went to options-->homescreen preferences-->downloads folder-->from here it doesn't matter where i put it i can't find it.  i also no longer have an option for what theme i can use.  it only has one which is new and i hate.  the two that were default on my phone when i bought it are gone and i can't find the ones i've downloaded from Blackberry App World along the way either.  That's why I thought if I could just find my download folder I could maybe find my themes I had previously and use them.  HELP!

I've had a quite similar issue, and I've solved it by deleting the custom command set preference file (user/library/Application SUpport/ Aperture/ Comands set/)
Not sure if it'll solve your problem, but it deserves a try

  • Time Machine isn't backing up my Downloads folder

I went to restore a file from my "Downloads" folder, while connected to my Time Machine external drive and when I browse for the file every file or folder in my "Downloads" folder is greyed out and don't even look like files.
Downloads is not listed in the section of excluded files.
Anybody got any insight? Here's a picture:

I'm not having any problems with any other folders that I'm aware of. Just poked around some other folders in backups, both internal backups and on the external and they are fine.
Downloads shows "0 files" at the bottom of the window in any of the backups, both externals and internals.
Moved a copy of Mountain Lion from the desktop to the Downloads folder, then did a manual backup. Here is the output I got from the backup buddy in my dashboard:
Starting manual backupBackup failed with error: 19Starting manual backupBacking up to: /Volumes/The Monopoly Guy/Backups.backupdbUsing file event preflight for SpeedyWill copy (1.7 MB) from SpeedyFound 150 files (4.76 GB) needing backup6.61 GB required (including padding), 84.92 GB availableCopied 2579 files (38.7 MB) from volume Speedy.Using file event preflight for SpeedyWill copy (Zero KB) from SpeedyFound 20 files (Zero KB) needing backup902.1 MB required (including padding), 84.88 GB availableCopied 1391 files (677 bytes) from volume Speedy.Created new backup: 2012-12-14-161604Starting post-backup thinningNo post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups existBackup completed successfully.
And going back into time machine, that file is not available for restoring.

  • I accidentally removed my download folder from the dock, how do I get it back?

I accidently removed my download folder from my desktop, how do I get it back?

I accidently removed my dowload folder as well.  Your tip easily put it back in the dock, but now the folder opens differently. It used to show the most recent downloads at the bottom of a vertical list of icons. Now, a huge folder opens up in seemingly random order. How do I get it to go back to the previous preferences?

  • Attachments in Mail Downloads folder

I found a folder Home>Library>Mail Downloads which was loaded with about every attachment I have ever received using Mail. I was trying to figure out why. In Mail prefs, there is an option to select a folder, I have chosen Home>Downloads pretty much which is also default for my browser. The action is set to remove unedited copies when message is deleted. I'm confused because it looks like the Destination and Action are independent. When I have an attachment, if I click "Save" it populates the selected path to the "Downloads" folder. If I open that attachment, it seems to populate the Home>Library>Mail folder.
What controls the opened attachments form populating this, somewhat, obscure folder?

    Hi,
Attachments to messages are actually stored in the mailbox along with the message text. It is when an attachment must be opened with another application, such as a Word document with Word, that the attachment is also placed in the Mail Downloads folder. There it can be used and edited by the application used to open it, and from there can be returned as edited to the sender or to others.
There is no reason files must permanently stay, but if you edit or otherwise alter files that have been attached, then you must elect some place to keep them for your own use.
You will note that in the Mail Preferences/General there is also a selection regarding when to remove files from Downloads folder if not edited. Any file that is not edited need not remain in the Downloads folder since it already exists in the mailbox with the message it came attached to.
Image files, since they can be opened directly in the Mail window, by Mail, do not go into the Downloads folder, but if any were opened from the message, with say, Photoshop, then that image file would also be sent to the Downloads, temporarily.

  • Quick Look copies attachments to Mail Downloads folder!

Holy maloly, I just discovered why my MacBook Pro was slowly losing disk space! Every time I use Quick Look to check an attachment in Mail, a copy of the attachment is placed in the Mail Downloads folder of my user Library. My writing work entails quickly looking at lots of very large attachments and e-mailing estimates to clients. Quick Look has been a great time saver for this. Nice being able to stay in Mail and not have to open Word to examine the job. But I don't need all these additional copies taking up space on my hard drive. As far as I know, Mail is the only program that does this.
Is there any way of telling Quick Look to NOT make copies of Mail attachments?
    Thanks!

  • Changing "Mail Downloads" folder for attachments

It seems in Leopard Mail, when you double click an attachment to open it, it is temporarily saved to ~/Library/Mail Downloads. This is in contrast to (I think) Tiger, where it would be saved to the Downloads folder set in the General preferences. There is still a setting for the Downloads folder in the General preferences, and according to the help window, it is to "Specify the folder in which to temporarily save attachments you open from a message". To me, that means the same as the Tiger behavior. However, if I change this preference to, say, "Desktop", it seems opening an attachment (not explicitly saving it) still saves it to the ~/Library/Mail Downloads folder, not the assigned folder. Is this the correct behavior? If so, the help window is misleading. Personally, I would like the option to change this folder, although I suppose there are workarounds such as changing the Mail Downloads folder to an alias of the desired destination folder.
    thanks.

Ok, so much for that clever workaround. Doesn't work, Mail just throws up an error and refuses to save the attachment. Any other ideas? I just want Mail to auto-save opened attachments onto the Desktop, in case I forget to explicitly save it, and so I don't have to root into subfolders to find it.
