Download folder is forgotten frequently

I started with Firefox 10 today after updating some packages of my Kubuntu10.04. Before I used 3.6.?
Since this change firefox often forgets my lastly used download folder. It presents one that I used some downlaodactions before, but had changed in the meantime, or it present the standard /home/user/download.

  • The files in download folder keeps adding _b to the file name

I have a strange problem when downloading files on my Macbook Pro(running Mavericks). The name of the files being downloaded or already downloaded to the Download folder keep growing like this:
Say for a file called My_file_name.zip, the system keeps adding _b to the name, it becomes
    My_file_name_b_b_b_b...._b.zip.
And for big files, frequently I get the error message saying the file could not be downloaded due because there is no enough disk space. However the file is infact downloaded. I just need to highlight the .download and select Show Package Content, and copy the real file out of it. Howerer this is very annoying.
This problems seems only happens when download files to the default Downoad folder. When downloading to other user selected folders, everything works fine, Please help if you know how to fix this issue.
    Thanks

  • Downloads Folder Action

    Hello,
I found a simple shell script that will help keep my Downloads folder organized by modification date. I used Automator to create a Finder Plug-In that's nothing but a Run Shell Script action: touch "$." Works great. I saved it as a folder action and attached it to my Downloads folder, but it won't work as a folder action. I added a Wait for Files to Copy action (testing with a pdf extension and download), and it still doesn't work. I tried to attach it to a dummy folder on my desktop that I directed Safari to save downloads to, still wouldn't work. I've saved it as a script, and attached it to the folder as a script, no joy. Will someone please help me with this. It should be very simple, I just want the items to be touched without having to touch each one myself.
I have checked permissions on my user folder and Downloads folder, also deleted ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist and com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist, logged out/in, disabled and re-enabled folder actions. Also, I have another folder action attached to my Downloads (Unquarantine), and it seems to work fine.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Jess

I'm closing this question because the folder actions somehow work now. I must have shut down/started up enough times, or done something inadvertently to kick it into gear. I frequently have to check to make sure the folder actions are enabled, but other than that, my script works like a charm! Thanks for giving this your attention.

  • OK to remove any old dmg from Downloads folder to increase disc space?

This is related to my earlier question about the 10.6.6. updater combo dmg.  I just don't understand dmgs.  If they are in my Downloads folder and not current, can I assume I don't need them any more?  That is, am I likely to have problems if I delete them?

    Hi
A dmg is a "disk image" - a  way of converting a collection of files and folders into a serial sequence of bytes that can be conveniently downloaded.  When you "mount" a disk image, OS X gets access to the files.
Frequently, a disk image will contain an installer application.  When you run this, it copies all the necessary files to their various locations on the disk so that the software is installed or updated.
In principle, one could download an installer directly from the net without the need for a disk image, however Apple and other distributors tend not to do this, because the disk image allows the addition of other files, such as a Read Me, Release Notes or User Manual.
Once the installer has been run, then the software on the disk image has been installed so in theory you don't need the disk image file any more - however, you may decide you want to keep it anyway because it's got (say) the User Manual or useful Release Notes.

  • Can the contents of the Downloads folder be deleted?

Can the contents of the Downloads folder be deleted in order to regain storage space?

    Hi KMess1948
The Downloads folder is just a convenient place to put stuff that you downloaded from various sources. It's contents can be deleted at will. You could of course create an archive on a separate harddisk or memory stick to keep for instance study material, or stuff that you would use more frequently. The rest of the stuff could be trashed at will.
I keep three achives, OS X and Combo Updates including and since SL, Documents, & important downloaded documents besides the normal backup stuff.
    Download folder gets emptied regularly.
    Have fun

  • How do I use one downloads folder for multiple users?

I recently added my girlfriend a profile in my Imac. We both have seperate Profiles and logins however I would like to find out, if the the Downloads folder can be used by both profiles. I found that each profile has their own Downloads folder, and goes to their own locations.
I would like to find out, if its possible to re-direct my downloaded files as well as her downloaded files into just ONE "Downloads" folder. The default destination of the downloads folder would be /users/girlfriend(name of girlfriend). I want to change it to /users/(me) so that all downloads would just go to one folder.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Mail attachments aren't being downloaded to Downloads folder?

Whenever I click on an attachment I receive on Mail, I want it to automatically download onto my Downloads folder. However, when I click on an attachment, it opens, but it doesn't appear in my Downloads folder. It only saves onto the hidden "Mail Downloads" folder that you can find by going into your Mac's Library. This is especially irritating when I open an attached word document, edit and save it, close the window, and then attempt to resend the edited attachment through email only to find that it's not in my downloads folder and that the "Mail Downloads" folder only has the original copy (without edits).
Under "Mail Preferences -> General -> Downloads folder:" I have it set to my actual Downloads folder so I don't understand what could be wrong. Anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks for the help!
P.S. I know that I can "Save As" the file and put it into my downloads folder, but that's a lot of unnecessary work when I'm downloading multiple attachments.

Select the photo(s) in the email body, Control (right) - click , and select Save to Downloads Folder from the contextual menu:

  • Downloads Folder

    Hey everyone!
I'm sorry if I asked the wrong question in a wrong place. I really do not know where to got to ask this question. Here we go. I know how to change my icons on my Mac from Finder to the trash can, but I do not know how to change my Download Folder, and what not. I mean I know how to change it, but when I change the icon to a basket. The stuff I download are not in the basket. They are usually infront of the basket where you can't see the basket, or behind the basket where you can't see what I downloaded. How can I set it up where I can see the basket, and the stuff in my basket. I know this is a hard question to understand. Maybe some of you do know what I'm talking about, but I do need some help please. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
    -Tyson

Are you talking about changing the icon that shows up in the Dock where the Downloads stack is? I assume you're using the method where you put an empty file/folder with the icon you want in the Downloads folder (not actually changing the icon of the downloads folder itself).
The Downloads folder is sorted by the date the file was added (so you can see the order in which you downloaded files). You can right-click it and sort by name to keep a certain icon in front (so the basket would show up above the others).
If you update to 10.5.2 or later, another method that might work better (but you wouldn't be able to actually see the stuff in the basket) would be to set the icon of the Downloads folder itself as the basket (Get Info on the basket, click the icon, copy, get info on the downloads folder, click the icon, paste), and then right click and Display As Folder. This will set the downloads Stack to show the basket (and only the basket, with nothing behind or "in" it) as its icon. When you click it, it would still pop out all of the files in the Downloads folder.

  • Downloads Folder Help Please :(

    Hi all,
A friend sent me a RAR file, i unpacked it and nothing appeared in the downloads folder where i unpacked it to ????
after doing this a couple of times as i thought it might be a blip, i deleted everything in the folder. but the folder states the size of it is 4.5gb for 0 items?
now i guess i have done somthing wrong, but for the life i dont know, please can someone help me. 4.5gb folder with 0 items??
    Thanks in advance
    Barry

    Open up terminal and type
" sudo rm -rf downloads/ " provided you have nothing inside the downloads folder, not even empty folders
you will then have to hit enter, and then your password, and hit enter again
that will remove the downloads directory

  • Downloads Folder No Longer Jumps Up When Saving Attachments

When saving attachments in Mail, my downloads folder on the Doc used to jump up a couple of times when I hit "save" from within an email that I received to signify that I just saved it into that folder.
However, for no rhyme or reason, the downloads folder no longer jumps up when I save attachments. The attachment still save in to that folder but I miss the pop-up action telling me that it did.
I searched the net and posts and found nothing on this quark. This is driving me nutz!
    Please help!

Check in System Preferences>Dock and check off Animate opening applications and see if that doesn't do it. Not sure if that is why but it is worth a shot.

  • Attachments in Mail Downloads folder

I found a folder Home>Library>Mail Downloads which was loaded with about every attachment I have ever received using Mail. I was trying to figure out why. In Mail prefs, there is an option to select a folder, I have chosen Home>Downloads pretty much which is also default for my browser. The action is set to remove unedited copies when message is deleted. I'm confused because it looks like the Destination and Action are independent. When I have an attachment, if I click "Save" it populates the selected path to the "Downloads" folder. If I open that attachment, it seems to populate the Home>Library>Mail folder.
What controls the opened attachments form populating this, somewhat, obscure folder?

    Hi,
Attachments to messages are actually stored in the mailbox along with the message text. It is when an attachment must be opened with another application, such as a Word document with Word, that the attachment is also placed in the Mail Downloads folder. There it can be used and edited by the application used to open it, and from there can be returned as edited to the sender or to others.
There is no reason files must permanently stay, but if you edit or otherwise alter files that have been attached, then you must elect some place to keep them for your own use.
You will note that in the Mail Preferences/General there is also a selection regarding when to remove files from Downloads folder if not edited. Any file that is not edited need not remain in the Downloads folder since it already exists in the mailbox with the message it came attached to.
Image files, since they can be opened directly in the Mail window, by Mail, do not go into the Downloads folder, but if any were opened from the message, with say, Photoshop, then that image file would also be sent to the Downloads, temporarily.

  • Why does Reader XI download email attachments to my Download folder before I am able to print them?

After last update my Reader XI automatically downloads email attachments (.pdf) to my Downloads folder. I then have to open that file in order to print it.  Before, the attachment would open in Reader and I could print from that direct.

Windows 8, Firefox email client.  What happens is that I click on attachment links in emails, which are .pdf files.  Instead of a menu allowing opening of the file with Reader, the file gets automatically downloaded to my Downloads folder.  I then have to open that folder, click on the file name... then Reader opens and I can view the file as well as print it from the Reader menu.

  • Quick Look copies attachments to Mail Downloads folder!

Holy maloly, I just discovered why my MacBook Pro was slowly losing disk space! Every time I use Quick Look to check an attachment in Mail, a copy of the attachment is placed in the Mail Downloads folder of my user Library. My writing work entails quickly looking at lots of very large attachments and e-mailing estimates to clients. Quick Look has been a great time saver for this. Nice being able to stay in Mail and not have to open Word to examine the job. But I don't need all these additional copies taking up space on my hard drive. As far as I know, Mail is the only program that does this.
Is there any way of telling Quick Look to NOT make copies of Mail attachments?
    Thanks!

  • Why are my Downloads not going to the Download Folder?

I presume my computer is playing up:
    In the Firefox preferences,
I have selected "Show the Downloads window when downloading a file"
and "Save files to Downloads folder"
BUT - my computer neither shows the downloads window,
nor saves the download to the folder.
(It used to do so, and I didn't change my preferences)
Is there something you could recommend to correct its wayward behaviour?
    Thanks,
    Peter.

I'm not sure this is the complete answer but try:
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
And here is a System Management tool that can help clean some of your processes up:
