Download free ringtones without itunes?

Is there any way to download free ringtones directly to my Iphone without having to go thru Itunes or sync from my laptop? Droid allows you to download straight to the phone but I can't get my Iphone to do it. Has anyone found a way to do this? Using Itunes to do this is a hassle and is time consuming. Maybe I should have bought a Droid.

You can take music and turn them into ringtones for free with ringtone app. Download songs from your old CDs onto iTunes on computer then sync iPhone. After that use ringtone app then follow app directions you might sync phone to computer to put ringtone in right spot on phone. It will tell you how to after you make to ringtone on your phone.

If None is not available - On your computer launch iTunes and click "iTunes Store" in the left navigation pane. Click the "down arrow" next to your name at the top right side of the page and click "Account." Enter your username and password and click "View Account" to log into your account information. Next to your Payment Type, click "Edit." Select the "None" button and click "Done." Confirm that your card has been removed by returning to the Apple account information screen. Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is critical. Note that you can do this only when creating a new Apple ID. You cannot use an existing ID.
You will of course not be able to get anything other than the free apps without entering in some sort of payment method (credit card, prepaid iTunes card, gift certificate, etc.)

Apps that are listed in the app store as free will be free to download (if you have a credit card on your iTunes account then you may get a temporary holding charge on it which should disappear within a few days : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3702). If you don't want to be able to buy any 'extras' within any app after you've downloaded it then turn off In-App Purchases on your devices - on an iPad it's under Settings > General > Restrictions, and I assume it's similar for other devices.

Thanks for your help. I bought a 5 second ring tone. I have tried all the suggestions to convert it but still nothing. I will ask for a refund when I get my receipt email. Frank, thanks for your note. I wrote "COMPLETED" because I had gone to a lot of effort to get the content of the book precisely as I wanted it. I would fully expect to see my level of effort and care matched by functional competence in Aperture 3 to render the book the way I created it. Too much to ask?
And yes, I upgraded the Aperture 2 Library first. [Not ALL my tens of 000s of pix, because I use Lightroom selectively for photo editing. But Yes to the Aperture 2 Library.] That step took a number of minutes, but seemed to work fine (no error messages of any kind).
Then I opened the existing book project in Aperture 3, which followed some "magic-box" process that took a minute or so. As I said, when that step was done, by all appearances the book was ready to submit for printing - until I examined the photos a little more closely. You did see the blurry example I included, didn't you? That is what each and every photo looks like.
Text-box content appears to have been rendered pertectly, for the record (including captions).
So, ... is this result something you have heard of before? Do you know of a one-step solution? Or am I looking at an extended picture-by-picture fix?

I am a new iphone user. I have a PC..with itunes on it, yet my husband has a mac with all our new music on it (dont want to open itunes on my pc and have it download all the new stuff...satellite internet can't handle the transfer!)

i just remember that if i open itunes on my pc, wont it automatically detect new downloads and try to add them? I have satellite internet and when i do that, it exceeds my fair threshold policy and i cant have that...
also wasn't sure if i could hook an iphone to a pc and have it transfer the ringtones properly.

I just received a new iphone and want to try out some of the free apps on the app-store. i'm used to being able to download free apps w/o itunes within the Droid enviroment. This seems complicated with having to install itunes, and having to enter credit card/pay-pal information just to be able to use some 'free' apps. Is there a method of setting up my account w/o having to do this?

Have you already established an Apple ID, or are you balking because of the credit card issue? It is my understanding that you can get the Apple ID by specifying NONE when they ask for the credit card information. You should then be able to download free stuff.
Later, if you try to buy something, you will then need to provide a method of payment. One alternative may be to add a gift card to your account. I've seen them for sale at Walmart. That way you can buy things without any worry about someone stealing your credit card information.
