Download icon on dock?

What is the Download icon on Leopard's dock used for? Do I trash the contents after I download something? I don't get it. Thank you.

The download folder was not in Tiger. If you wish to loose it, remove ot from the dock and poof it's gone. Replacing it is as easy as dragging one down from your user folder. DMG downloads can be stored elsewhere. Not to contradict the great post prior to mine, only another option.

  • Can't find the Download icon in dock

I accidentally dragged the icon that all the downloaded files go in for the new Leopard, off of the dock and saw it poof away. If it were anything else I'd find it in my folders and drag it back onto the dock but I have no idea where an option like that is located.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I did this as well. Then I dragged the folder from my Finder. But is is not a folder icon now; it's just a document stack. How do I get the 3-D folder icon back?

  • I have a new Mac book pro- accidentally removed downloads stack from dock - want to restore it --tried looking for home folder and that didn't work

Your Home folder is located in the /Users/ folder. Double-click on the disk icon on your Desktop. Double-click on the Home folder. Select the Downloads folder and drag its icon into the Dock on the right side of the Dock's sizing bar (next to the Trash icon.)

How do I get my downloads icon back onto my dock?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To get your Downloads icon in the Dock, open a Finder window and drag Downloads from the Finder sidebar to the right part of the Dock, so it will show up in the Dock

Help I have 'lost' my downloads icon from the dock on my desktop Mac. Can I retrieve it? If so please describe how, using simple terms. I have tried searching folders, finder and trash

Your Downloads folder should be in your Home folder. Just drag it to the Dock.
If you've managed to delete it, try creating a new folder called 'Downloads'. You will probably need to nominate it in Safari or any other browser preferences as your download destination. (Safari Preferences>General, 'Save downloaded items to:' menu)

  • Dock "download" icon (file) not working

My download icon (file) on the dock dose nothing when pressed? And when I right click it and "engage" *open download* it gives me a question mark. My downloaded files are there through the finder and when I download all seems to be OK. So what could be the problem? All suggestions, advice and comments are welcomed; thank you in advance for any feedback.

drag the downloads icon off the dock. now select the downloads folder in finder and drag it to the dock. this will recreate the downloads stack and hopefully fix the problem with it.

  • How do I get a Download icon into my dock?

I used to be able to see a folder of Downloads in my dock.  It isn't there anymore and I want to get it back.  I tried to go into Applications and look for a Download icon to drag into the dock, but I didnt see anything called Downloads.  Any suggestions?

In Finder open a new window and drag the Downloads item listed on the left of the window to the Dock and place it between the line and the Trash - a space should open up to accommodate it - and drop it there.

lion icon in dock says paused, can't start download

    Try this:
    1. Make sure you have the latest version of iOS.
    2. Make sure you have the latest version of ibooks.
    3. Download a free book from the iBook store. (Winnie the Pooh is free) This appears to make existing books with a "downloading" status change to the cloud download button.  Click the button to download the book again.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then to resume the download.

  • I lost my download icon from my dock. How do I get it back?

I lost my download icon from my dock. How do I get it back?
    Thanks.

It was tricky, because one should click on finder itself, not finder preferences, where the download icon is actually movable. So I was able to move the icon down to the dock.
But now it doesn't have the same view as before. Now it looks like a folder with downloaded files in alphabetical order. Before it was showing the latest downloads in the way the Mac computers only do, the curved way (can't describe it). Anyone knows how to bring that back?

  • DOWNLOADS folder in dock... all of a sudden DOCUMENTS folder!

What the hayhay? Seriously... I was just getting used to the new download folder, and it magically switched to the "documents" folder. And, I have no idea where my downloads are now going.
    Help?

Spotlight (the magnifying glass icon in the upper right of the screen) can help you find where your downloads have gone. Most likely they are still going to the Downloads folder, which is just a standard folder in your home directory (the one that has your login name in the Finder).
The Documents and Downloads icons in the Dock are just pointers to the actual folders in your Home directory. If you click and drag one of them away from the Dock it will go "poof" and vanish -- as you have just removed it from the Dock.
To replace it in the Dock, open up a Finder window showing your Home directory, and drag the folder you want (Downloads in your case) back into the Dock on the Trash can side of the Dock's divider bar. The "real" Downloads folder will stay in your Home directory and you will get a new pointer (a "Stack" view) of your Downloads folder in the Dock again.

  • Downloads missing from dock

Both the downloads icon and the documents icon are missing from the dock.  I try to drag them from Finder and nothing happens.  Where they should be there are very light grey bars.  This sounds odd, but I think they got pulled below the dock.  Sometime they appear in grey behind the dock but cannot be opened by clicking on them.  How do I get them back.

(this is not going to solve it but it will help us see what you're saying. can you hit shift+cmd+4 at the same time, the cursor will become crosshairs. now hit space bar. the cursor should become a camera. place this camera on the dock, the dock should be highlighted when doing this, and click the mouse.
A picture will be saved on your dock, upload that picture here for us to see.
if you have your dock hidden this will not work, you'll need to right clickt he track where it separates your applications with the trash icon and then right click that go to dock preferences and then uncheck automatically hide and show dock. you can also access these settings in system preferences>dock
should look something like this (I customized my dock so it won't look exactly like this but it will isolate your dock

  • How can I change the view of Download Folder in Dock

I used to have my Download Folder in my Dock show up as a vertical string of icons with the latest at the bottom, when I clicked on the Folder. I recently had to drag the Downloads Folder back into the Dock after it had disappeared from there.  After doing that I now notice when I click on the Downloads icon in the Dock, it now shows up as a page full of icons.  I prefer the original vertical listing.  How can I change it back?
Hope someone can help on this one.  Thanks.

That's not an option. Under Display As, you have the view options for Downloads

  • I accidentally dragged the Lion download from the dock onto my desktop and it disappeared in a puff. This seems to have halted the download as it is now 8 hours since purchase and stuck at 1.75gigs. Help anyone - please?

I accidentally dragged the Lion download from the dock onto my desktop and it disappeared in a puff. This seems to have halted the download as it is now 8 hours since purchase and has stuck at 1.75gigs. Could anyone advise please?

The icon in the dock is NOT the file itself.  You simply removed the dock icon.  Go into your Applications folder and you'll find "Install Mac OSX..." and you have what you want.

  • I accidently moved my download icon to the screen and it went up in smoke, Now I can't download where is it?

I can't download because I have accidently moved my download icon to the the screen and it went up in smoke

Assuming you mean your Downloads folder (there is no download icon):  Go to Home and drag the Downloads folder to the left of the @ pin in your Dock.  Make sure you drag the folder over the Dock separator line.
