Download Mavericks Free?

I run Snow Leopard. Twice a pop-up message appeared on my MacBookPro saying "Download Mavericks Free."
This box is highly suspicious. It has a URL called "Details" and nothing else. Just those 4 words, and no way to delete the box.
We know what clicking on a URL from an unknown source can lead to, and no one with sense would do it. But there is no x to delete the invading box. No way to get rid of it except reboot.
No reputable company would do that, certainly not Apple, so I'm wondering who sends it, and if it can be blocked. Of course my browser is set to block pop-up windows, but hackers have no problem skirting that.
Anyone else get this attack?

The announcement is from Apple. Mavericks is free and they constant reminders are annoying after a while. Yosemite due out this fall will also be free.

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
          ▪          iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
          ▪          MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
          ▪          MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),

          ▪          Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
          ▪          Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac also needs:
  ▪ OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
  ▪ 2 GB or more of memory  <--I would recommend a minimum of 4GB but 8GB is much better.
  ▪ 8 GB or more of available space
While your computer might meet the requirements, also check your applications for Mavericks compatibility here:  http://roaringapps.com/

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor

  • After having downloaded the free version of Maverick OS X, HD version, I haven`t got a clear screen anymore and even on my photos lots of scratches in different colours appear. It seems to me that something went wrong.

Since I have downloaded the free version Maverick OS X, HD version, from the App Store, I haven`t got anymore a clear screen whenever I open a page. Scratches and stripes appear and this is especially annoying when I wanna have a look on my downloaded photos from my iPhone 5 S. Does anybody know a solution ? Maybe somebody is struggling with the same problem.

I'm not sure what you mean by HD Version. There is only one Mavericks and I find nothing about HD.
Perhaps you have the display resolution set wrong for your display.

Yes, it's in your Applications folder and is called "Install OS X". Make sure to empty your trash afterwards to clear the space.

I am trying to Download the free Maverick 10.9.1 and it's sitting there showing "downloading" but nothing indicates for the last 15 minutes that it is really doing it? Anyone out there has ideas to share?

When I downloaded it, it appeared as if nothing was happening but it actually was being downloaded! It took quite some time to download. I suspect the internet speed affects how quickly it moves.

  • Why does it require me to input my credit card just to download a free app? The app is the new OSX Mavericks

Its says that I must enter my credit card number in order to download a free app (OSX Mavericks). Why is this?

You can select, "None" > Mac App Store: Changing your account information

The system (computer) requirements for Mavericks are posted on the web site. If your computer will handle it, you can update directly from OS X 10.7.

  • Since I downloaded Mavericks I can't open iPhoto anymore. Does anyone know where i can get a free update?

    Hi,
I downloaded Mavericks a couple of days ago and since then I can not open my iPhoto (Version 9.2.3.) anymore.
I cant find a free update...but I dont want to pay for the whole app again.
    What can I do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You are running iPhoto '11, so you can get the latest iPhoto update for free. Open the Mac App Store, go to Updates and update iPhoto to the latest version.
If you don't see it, switch the Mac OS X language to English in System Preferences > Language and Region, and restart

    I cannot download Maverick.
Pop-up invitation said it was free.  When I clicked Download, my desktop started looking like an iPad for a few seconds, then  reverted.
All subsequent attempts via the App Store at download have been met either with the gear turning for just a second then disappearing, or no response at all.
No files have appeared in my Downloads folder.

  • Getting errors just trying to download Mavericks wondering if I really should do it

I'm reading of others having problems w Mavericks, although some say its fine.
The reason that is pushing me is that I updated my iPad Mini to ios 7 & now when I try to open a Numbers file on it, it tells me if I open it, I will no longer be able to sync until I upgrade to Mavericks. Not happy about that w no warning & not expecting an OS upgrade to change apps. I was certainly not expecting to lose the ability to sync iWorks files between my iPad Mini & MacBookPro just because I upgraded to ios 7.
But I decided today to take the time to actually go ahead. I really need to use that file & want to keep it synced between ipad & Mac. Data entry is easier on the Mac, but I'm not using it as much these days since I can do much of my everyday things, email, web browsing & iMessaging on it, as well as taking notes in Pages.
I'm also wondering about upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. I've spent hours preparing my Mac. 1st checking to make sure Paralells 8 would work, then updating it to latest version & then updating Windows & its virus definitions.
Then I had read some reports of people having trouble w mail, so decided to delete quite a lot of mail (still have a lot but I guess I deleted over 10k messages.
I also updated Mountain Lion. & also removed some things from the desktop.
Then I closed out of everything & shut down for a few min. Then rebooted.
All this to give the optimal environment for downloading & installing what I realize is a large file.
This is bringing back memories of when I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my mid 2010 MacBookPro (replaced in May after spilling water all over it). I purched it to download at Apple store. It went all the way through w me at the projects table. It seemed like it was done but was stuck. But the Apple person kept saying to wait. Finally he asked the Geniuses who said to shut down & start over. That time it did work.
Opened App store & selected Mavericks Free Update. Got an error message. It said there was an error & to try from Purchased. Tried there & got errors after just a few seconds 2-3 times before it finally started downloading. It got up to near 500 mb & then came the error message again.
I did not have anything else open as I went right to start downloading.
So, w reading about the problems others are having & these problems just downloading I'm having major 2nd thoughts so think I may not go ahead, especially as the evening is moving on & I guess even if it downloads smoothly it was showing expected download time (when it was doing the 1st part) of around 40-45 min w my fairly fast internet download of 25.89 (just now tested using SpeedTest. Of course don't know exactly what it was when I was trying to download a few min ago, but that's about what it usually is).
So w this much trouble just trying to download. How do I know whether it will work ok after downloaded or have problems like others are reporting?
I have plenty of HD space--401.58 GB storage available.  4 GB memory
I'm using wifi, w my MacBookPro right next to the Arris Telephony modem from Comcast & the wifi router.
    Mid 2012 MacBookPro.

    Update
OK, Today I went ahead & booted & tried again & it worked this time.
Not sure why it didn't yesterday. Maybe the servers were just overloaded? Several others reported similar.
Also yesterday when I ran Speedtest it showd download at about 25 mbps, This morning just before I re-started the download it was showing just above 30 mbps.  So maybe the internet was less busy? Or at least the parts between me & the test server.
& so far it is working ok.

  • HOW can I FIX Mavericks and Safari 7.0 to allow Gmail to work?  Gmail has been FUBAR'd since downloading Mavericks today.  Finally found the brute-force logout site to just getr logged out; can't keep doing that.  Other features no longer work, either.

Made big mistake of downloading Mavericks today.
Been struggling with all the FUBARd messes it caused, ALL DAY.
Google basic buttons don't work--can't log out or other basic functions.
    Website use is impaired.
It took almost 3 hours to do a basic online order on one of them--at this rate, I'll be out of business soon, and it's seriously impairing Christmas preparations!
Google Voice/Video are screwed up, had to RE-download their voice/video plugin all over again--again.
    Voice/video quality is REALLY poor.
Lag times in so many things are bad.
Thought this would download WITH the better writing/bookkeeping programs--NOT!
Mac Maps is piddle compaired with GoogleMaps.
The Email program on the desktop is REALLY hard to use, has few useful functions.  It's MAYbe good if one only has ONE email; using it with severeal various email accounts is a serious liability in many ways--like filing, sorting, marking, etc.; no clear way to move email files to an external drive to save, to unload the HD.
HOW can Safari and Mavericks be fixed?
IF not, HOW can I REMOVE Mavericks and get back to Mountain Lion--which was not too great, but certainly more functional than Mavericks!
I NEED my web-based emails to work--NOW...NOT when Mac finally gets around to fixing things sometime later.
I NEED online ordering to work--NOW--not later when Mac finally gets around to fixing things.
PLEASE someone--any help out there?  I couldn't even find but a rare hint that Safari 7.0 even exists--much less that anyone admits it's got problems, nor fixes for it.
What to do?  Throw the whole unit out? Wipe and reboot?  Dumb it back to OS 10? HOW? WHAT?
    [freaking out here...]

    Zak Adelman, LexSchellings,
It's a shiney new computer.  Came loaded with Mountain Lion.
Too busy learning to use the blessed thing, to download anything....except...
The only pluggin that had to be loaded, was Google Voice-Video pluggin, while Lion was still it's OS.  [AND been using the Safari that came already in it.]   Had to do that a couple times--nothing new there--that plug-in had to be re-loaded when using a PC, too--THAT happened even before Google slammed everyone into coerced use of it's Google+.
[I understood from others, that Firefox won't work in Mac units--or I woulda put that in it to see if that solved anything]
This unit seemed a bit sluggish from the git-go, out-of-the-box.
I figured that was probly the local DSL here---rural DSL is...um...our DSL's not something to brag about, but it's the best we can do...
The difference between speed of loading pages, etc. on the new Mac, was --not-- toooo terribly different--though yes, slower on Mac....and chalked it up to my inexperience with Mac.
Been trying to get things up and running for a bit over a month now.
NOT doing very well at it--just barely getting by; rapidly falling behind what needs done [work].
Google worked just --OK-- when OS was Lion, as did the Google voice/video--slower, and voice-video was kinda scratchy or glitchy, but worked enough to --get by--.
    Loading Mavericks, ruined that.
VOIP calls via Google talk have bad echio, static, cut-outs; video calling was pixilated or not working; WAS cued to re-load it's Voice-Video plug-in....which seemed to help a bit, though not very well; it only helped the Voice-Video some, not all--figured that was probably Google issues, less than Mac's, since Google has been increasingly dysfunctional as they have twisted it to be a social media-dominant thing.
[[now seeking an email venue that does what Gmail was good at, including the Voice-video calling, that has no intention of turning itself inside out to be "social"]]
Can't sign out of Gmail or Google+, nor use buttons in upper right corner with the drop-down menu.
NO buttons in upper right corner cluster on Gmail work, except the name+ button to toggle over to Google+---which I don't need! [yeah--THAT's a Google problem!]
Can only switch to HTML version by catching that button as the account signs in--if one fails to be fast enough with their fingers, it goes to Google+; can't get to email unless type in mail.google.com.
Managed to catch that button today, and clicked to use HTML "permanently" until these issues get solved.
    ALSO:
Have fairly new [about 1 year?] HP bluetooth printer-scanner.
BUT, after Mavericks loaded: it HAS the unit listed, HAS drivers for it, HP unit IS listed as default printer, everything --seems-- "go",
.....except Mac keeps posting it's out of ink, and/or, not hooked up, and/or not turned on--even when it is on.
    It's SUPPOSED to be blue-toothing that printer/scanner.
It did it for Lion, before loading Mavericks, even though it was troublesome to get it to work, it at least HAD printed one document when Lion was the OS.
    Thank you...Downloaded EtreCheck:
BTW:  Trying to copy/paste data from that check list, to this post, was achaic:
had to use Edit, select all, then use edit again to get it pasted--the mouse buttons weren't allowed to copy-paste using right-click functions [is this a relic limited-function "thing" with Mac?, or is it because I wanted to keep using this new wirless, non-Mac mouse?].
    Advice?

  • How can I get my 10.6.8 MacBook to download Mavericks?

    Hi there,
I've been scouting various threads on the Support Community but still can't seem to figure out what's up with my MacBook...
    * I get onto the App Store...
    * Click on the link to download the free upgrade of OS X Mavericks...
    * Click on 'Install App'
    * I am then asked to fill in my account details, password, etc.
    * Then the icon for Mavericks appears in the corner of my dock but nothing else. When I hover over the icon it says it's 'Downloading...' however when I go to the purchased tab on the App Store it doesn't show up with anything. And if I click on the Mavericks icon it gives me the option to either 'Pause' or 'Cancel the download'.
So, I would be really grateful if you could help me figure out whether my laptop is downloading the update, bearing in mind I don't have a Trackpad nor am I able to see a 'Gatekeeper' in System Preferences.
    Thanks in advance

Hi MiMattheMac, you probably won't have any problems but just be aware upgrading from Snow Leopard to anything later is a big leap. Old, PowerPC - only programs won't work, for example, and even more recently developed programs won't work if their developers have not been updating them for recent OS X versions.
If you haven't made a backup of your Mac yet, and you consider the information on it important, please consider doing that. It is the only practicable way to "undo" an OS X upgrade should you want to. Merely having a backup seems to preclude the need to ever use it.
If the information on your Mac is not important to you, upgrading to Mavericks is even easier since you can completely erase the Mac first.
In any event let the download complete.
If this raises any concerns about installing it, and you need to ask questions to alleviate those concerns, you can just close this window when it eventually appears:
The 5 GB downloaded file will not be deleted and will remain available until you actually install Mavericks. You can do that at any time convenient for you.

  • My imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!

When trying to download Mavericks it says it cannot be loaded onto this machine? Strange as I have just downloaded Pages, Numbers and Keynote...free? Thanks and Regards
    Brian

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got OS X Mavericks installed (the Keynote, Pages and Numbers versions available in the Mac App Store are only compatible with OS X Mavericks).
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which uses a special OS X Mavericks version that is not available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store is not compatible with OS X Mavericks even if you are using it. This will be fixed in OS X 10.9.1, when your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs.

  • Cannot download Mavericks from App Store - error 1004, then error 13.

I have previously downloaded Mavericks 10.9.5, but now I cannot a second time.  When I attempt to download, I get an error code 1004..hitting cancel gives me error 13. Yosemite will download, but I don't want it until the "bugs" are worked out - maybe version 10.10.2.
Have contacted technical support by phone and cannot talk to a real person, only the menu system..want a serial number for a Mac. Since my MacBook Pro is over 3 years old, says I must pay for a technical support session - $29 fee.
This is how to treat a loyal customer?  Pay for support for an App Store failure to download a free upgrade?

This advise (in theory) should work. However, there are no "hidden items", but there is a "manage" link
Clicking on that link shows me nothing other than 2 previously downloaded, and since removed, free items (free apps I tried but later removed).
There is no "hidden" Mavericks download, or for that matter, previously downloaded Mountain Lion.
(Which I also cannot download from the "purchases" page.)
There is a button labeled "Reset" which links to "Reset all warnings for buying and downloading" which I have tried multiple times with no positive result.
    No joy.
