Download movies to Apple TV's 160GB HDD

Hello,
Newbie here.
I just got the old Apple TV with the 160GB Hard Drive.  I wanted to figure out how to sign in to iTunes on the Apple TV and start downloading all the Movies I've already bought on iTunes, but I can't figure it out.  I prefer to have these movies on the Apple TV Hard Drive to playback later from this drive because sometimes when I try to Stream video on other devices, the video will start and stop and buffer a lot.  I was thinking that I would avoid this if I played the movies right from the Apple TV's hard drive.
If I could, I would copy the movies from my laptop hard drive to a USB memory stick, but I can't seem to copy the movie files from the memory stick to the Apple TV hard drive when I plug it into the the Apple TV device. this Would be faster than downloading all the movies from itunes again.
I'm also going to hard wire my Apple TV instead of using the WiFi.  I find that my Laptop searches the internet and Downloads faster with Ethernet Cable, and takes twice as long with the WiFi.
Any help would be great, because I have about 25 movies on my Laptop and iTunes account I want to get on my Apple TV hard drive. it's about 80GB and would really suck if I had spend hours and hours, all day, getting these movies to Apple TV hard drive very slowly.
Thanks.
John

You sync content on to the first gen ATV thought iTunes.  After you have entered the ATV setup code in iTunes it will give you a menu to let you choose what content to sycn to ATV.
I'm also going to hard wire my Apple TV instead of using the WiFi.
GREAT CALL!!!!!  Probalby 60% - 80% of the posts on the ATV fourm are WiFi issues.

  • I cannot hear the vocals on downloaded movies on Apple TV. Ithe background music and sound effects only. What can I do to fix  this please?

I cannot hear the vocals on downloaded movies on Apple TV.
I can hear the  background music and sound effects only.
What can I do to fix  this please?

Most movies have Dolby surround sound. Seems like you don't have all sound channels coming out of your speakers.
Is the AppleTV connected to a receiver or to a TV?
If you have a receiver that supports dolby surround you should configure the sound settings of the Apple TV and receiver accordingly.
If it's connected to a TV the audio setting "Dolby Digital" in the Apple TV should be set to off.

  • Error occuring when trying to download movie from apple tv

When ever I rent a movie from apple tv an error occurs when I go to downlaod it. The error just says that the movie cant download right now, try again later. Even after numerous attempts the movie still wont download. This had been happening for months and I've just been watching movies from netflix. I'm being charged for movies I can't even watch! How can I fix this problem?

First, what is your internet speed? www.speedtest.net
iTunes HD content requires 6mbps (SD would be 3mbps)
Netflix uses variable bit-rate so it simply degrades on slower connections
iTunes content waits to play until enough has buffered for playback without interupption

  • Cannot play any downloaded movies on Apple TV

I have a downloaded movie in my iTunes library, and Home Sharing is enabled both on my Apple TV and on my iTunes. The same thing always happens when I try to play the movie. The play bar will appear, showing the correct time, but the spiral loading icon will keep spinning forever while never loading the movie. The exact same thing happens when I try to airplay a video I shot on my iPhone.
I never get this problem when airplaying YouTube, HBO Go, or Netflix. What is causing this problem with local videos, and how do I fix it?

    1. Do you have by any chance your iTunes Library stored on an external drive?
    2. Does Apple TV plays your movie after you have once restarted your iTunes?
As of today my only option is after a fresh download to restart iTunes and it works again.
Currently investigation and once found out I will post it here.
    It is really anoying.
    I found that article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
it seems Apple is aware of this connectivity issues and offers what I am doin anyway. When it comes to connection problem restart everything (seems that is a more easy solution for them instead of fixing it)

I am having the exact same issue. I will not be using my AppleTV to rent at all anymore. I am very pleased with the netflix streaming so I will use it only for that. I am on my 5th hour of waiting for a 30 minute show to download. As an experiment I downloaded the same show on my laptop. It used the same Wifi connection in my house. Laptop was 6 minutes. This is horrible.
That's because your Apple Tv gets interference. Try changing your router channel or move the Apple Tv a bit.

  • Downloaded movie to apple tv stops playing movie after few minutes

After a few minutes of watching a movie through Apple TV and Home sharing, the movie inexplicably stops and goes back to main menu.  This only started happening 2 days ago and I've had the Apple Tv for 6 months now with this issue not happening before.  Seems to maybe be linked to my comuter going into sleep mode, but again, it never used to do this.  And I'm not 100% sure of this fact.

    Hi,
I had a more or less similar problem after upgrading to Itunes 11 and the upgrade on the appleTV. Videos just stopped without any message and went back to the main menu of AppleTV.
My Itunes library is hosted on an Imac with a 6Tb firewire 800 connected disk.
What really resolved it was to set the following options in ' System preferences'  , ' Energy saver' :
    Computer sleep: Never
unselect ' put hard disk to sleep when possible'
    select all other options.
After an Itunes restart it worked continuously without any interruption what so ever.  (+10 hours or so) .
    Hopes this helps you,

  • Streaming a downloaded movie onto Apple TV

I downloaded a movie from the internet of which the files are in vob format. I can play the movie fine on my iMac through DVD player. How can I stream this this movie to my HDTV through Apple TV using Airplay? Home Sharing is turned for both the iMac and the Apple TV, and my iTunes library is appearing on the Apple TV menu screen.
Do I have to import the movie into my iTunes library? If so, how do I do that? I tried importing the folder containing the movie into iTunes but couldn't do it. Do I have to convert it to a different format?
    Thanks in advance

vob format would usually indicate a DVD source - if you downloaded this from somewhere the assumption would be it's a commercial movie someone else has ripped and is illegally being made available for download on the internet.
Discussion about obtaining/ripping/converting commercial copy protected DVD content is prohibited by the forum T&Cs and often prompts thread deletion by the moderators.
I know OS X DVD Player allow playback of vob fies but itunes does not, and these files are incompatible with AppleTV.

  • HT1657 trouble downloading movie on apple tv

I am having problems downloading a movie on my apple tv. When I select the movie icon it shakes, I double click, it opens to the selection. I select a movie but nothing happens. I have rented movies before and it worked but not any longer. I need help!

    Welcome to the Apple Communities.
Try restarting the Apple TV and router, although this may be a network issue.

  • Can't see downloaded movie on Apple TV

Can't seem to see the movie I downloaded from the computer on the Apple Tv. Bought and Downloaded some episodes of Dora at the same time, and they are showing and can be played under tvshows. Have checked the settings on iTunes and it shows as home sharing on, same with the ATV. Anyone else had this problem?

Home Sharing is playing up - you should see Movies/Rentals (on computer)/TV Shows etc under Computers.
Might be stating the obvious but computer and itunes need to be running for Home Sharing to work.
Might not help but try restarting your router.  For some reason AppleTV and iTunes on the computer are not detecting each other - they should if both are on the same LAN, but occasionally security software or spurious factors prevent this.
Are you on Windows or Mac platform? Which OS version? iTunes up to date?
Any security software running that might be blocking access?
iTunes purchases can either be played over the LAN from the computer (Computers icon) or streamed over the internet (Movies/TV Shows icons).  Your Dora purchases if accessed under TV Shows icon >Purchased are actually playing from the internet not the computer.

  • Downloading movies on Apple TV have become very slow lately. Previously an HD movie could be downloaded in less than a minute. I have an internet with speeds up to 30MPS. Latest generation of Apple TV and software up to date. Any suggestions.

Recently in the last 2-3 weeks, I've noticed that downloading a movie from iTunes via Apple TV has become painfully slow. Previuosly, I could download an HD movie in less than a minute. My internet speed is 30MPS. I installed the lastest Apple TV software. Nothing else has changed. I have the latest generation Apple TV.Is anybody else having a similar problem? Appreciate any ideas.

The limitation of approximately 200 titles has been discussed before, we can't be sure whether it will be something that gets fixed or not. I'm not really sure what your other issues are, if I use search instead of lists, I find whatever I want and am able to rent or purchase subject to those options being available for that particular title.

  • Downloading movies to Apple TV

I downloaded a movie which took 2 1/2 hours last night. I wanted to watch it today but I had to downloaded it all over again. Am I doing something wrong?

After downloading content to the Apple TV, if you do something else with it or allow it to go to sleep, you will lose that content. If you have a slow internet connection, you might consider downloading it to a computer and streaming it from there. That way it won't be removed until it's time limit is up or you delete it.
