Download music from iMac to iPad via iTunes

I just want to move a few albums from my iMac iTunes library onto my iPad 3. My music was ripped from my own CDs and was not purchased from the iTunes store. I am not using iTunes Match. I am using OS X 10.8.2, iTunes 11.0.1, and iOS 6.0.1.
I plugged my iPad into my iMac with a USB cord and selected the iPad under devices in the left side of iTunes. In the Summary pane, only "Synch with this iPad over Wi-Fi" is checked. I clicked on the Music tab at the top, checked Synch Music, and clicked the radio button to sync selected music. Then I scrolled down the list of albums and checked six albums. The horizontal bar at the bottom of the iTunes window shows a yellow bar labelled "Other" but nothing else (i.e., no Audio). Next, I clicked the Synch button. The messages "Preparing to Synch" and "Determining Tracks..." flashed by at the top of the iTunes window, and nothing else happened. No Audio bar shows at the bottom of the iTunes window, no albums appear in the Music app on the iPad. If I open the iPad's name under Devices on the left side of iTunes, and click Music, all the albums and their tracks appear in light gray but this music is not on my iPad. The Synch button still does nothing.
I have also tried dragging the albums from my iTunes music library onto the name of my iPad under "Devices" on the left side of the iTunes window. I see a green plus sign, but when I drop the music nothing happens. If I click the Summary tab and check "Manually manage music and videos," an Audio section immediately appears in the bar at the bottom of the iTunes window. If I click the Synch button, nothing happens except that the Audio section disappears again.
I really don't understand this. It seems like such a simple thing to want to transfer a few albums from my iTunes library on my iMac to my iPad. This app seems so counter-intuitive. Can anyone explain to me how to perform this one simple task successfully? Thank you.

Thanks for the help, Demo. I did what you suggested, except that I could not check "Sync only checked songs and videos" because it was grayed out for some reason. When I clicked the Apply button, iTunes got stuck with a message displaying at the top of the window that said "Step 4 of 4: Waiting for changes to be applied."
What finally solved this problem was ejecting the iPad and disconnecting its USB cable and doing a hard restart, then simultaneously rebooting the iMac. After both devices were back up, I reconnected the iPad with the USB cable and clicked Apply again. This time the music was transferred to the iPad. I think I probably needed to restart the iMac as soon as I updated iTunes to 11.0.1 since this was also necessary when I updated it to 11.0.
I still feel that transferring a few music files to the iPad should be much simpler and more intuitive. Jony Ive, we need you!

Within iTunes use the add folder to library option available on file menu. Select the folder to add. iTunes will add the file to iTunes library. Depending on settings, iTunes may copy the file to iTUnes folder location.

I have a question...how can I purchase tunes from other countries. • Downloading music from your ipod to your itunes library

does anyone know if you can download music you have on your ipod to your itunes library

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod to iTunes.

  • Can not download music from iCloud to iPad

  • When i add a book, music or video to ipad via itunes it keeps trying to add deleted files on the ipad previously. Why?

No major problem, just takes a lot of unecessary time. Whenever i do either of the following functions of adding a video, book, or a music file. Itunes keeps checking for the previously deleted files on the ipad and i dont know why. My problem is that if i just want to add ONE single file i will take more time because it does that silly thing. Any suggestion why this happens and how can be fixed?
    My current settings are:
(TICK) Prevent ipad from syncing automatically,
(TICK) Manually manage music and videos,

If it's any consolation i've just had a similar thing happen. Went to add a playlist and it wiped 35 gig of music off my iPod touch 64g in a nanosecond. I've got the latest iTunes and osx but do not back up because i keep different styles of music (and loads of it) in separate libraries and devices which i don't want mixed together. All my stuff is burned from cd so it's not lost for good and i've got a hard drive with the "lost" mp3 music on it but even so it will take literally weeks to prune the tracks for my iPod to be the same again. Why do they make it so difficult to manage your music on these things. I have massive amounts of music on my computer so autofill is a disastrous unusable gimmick to me. The whole thing seems to be aimed at 9 year old kids with about 6 mp3's on their phone rather than serious music lovers (for example accessing EQ is a joke let alone the lack of a manual option). I'm a dj and use apple for that reason but to be honest i'm beginning to wonder why. I'm absolutely livid. The weird thing is that my mac still shows the titles of the missing tunes in the 'on my device' window but as my macbook storage display shows no increase i'm pretty sure it's all gone. Nightmare. I have no confidence in this device anymore and could barely use the previous osx 8.2 anyway. Why they have to change it every ten minutes is beyond me. As the old saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but this format just gets more broken every time they update. An absolute disgrace. Why not just drag and drop or delete. No wonder the iPod is said to be a dying device, it's for music, it is not a phone. Not fit for purpose anymore. I can't be bothered to read a massive 'how to use' article every update. Good technology should be easier and more intuitive with each new version. I suppose i'll have to phone apple at my expense to find out what's going on, or maybe that's the whole idea. Very very very not happy.

  • How do I download music from my 3G iphone to itunes to upload to my 4g?

Hi, hopefully somebody out there has an answer to this one...
I had an old 3G iPhone, and my music was on iTunes, so no problem.  The problem came about when I upgraded to the 4G iPhone.  When I set it up and transferred everything, the music was essentially deleted from iTunes.  How am I able to get it off of the old device to the new one?
    Thanks!

You did not provide any information about your computer or Operating System...
    For Windows 7:
Windows 7 comes with Windows Media Center.  You can use Media Center to "Rip a CD" and place the contents of the CD onto your computer.
To see your computer's help files on how to do this:
Click Start > search / type "help and support" > Click on program "Help and Support" to open Help
in the search bar, type:  Rip CD
    Alternative:
You can download and install Apple iTunes
Once you have it installed, you can Import your CD contents into your computer.
It is pretty easy to do; the help files are onboard the iTunes program..
    Essentially, after iTunes is installed:
you load the CD into the player, open iTunes and it asks you if you want to import the CD.
Once the CD is imported, the music is available all the time.  You just open iTunes and you can listen to the music by selecting it.
    Kind Regards,

  • Can't download photos from iMac to iPad.

I have my iPad connected to my iMac. When I bring up iTunes on the mac, it does not show the iPad under devices. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

    Ralph,
I was too quick in responding. I had to leave the machine and now I'm back. I followed your advice and went to the VIEW menu and clicked Show Sidebar. What shows is Library, Store, Genius and Playlists - no iPad. I do have iTunes 11.  Another suggestion?  By the way, when I click on File and then Devices, hte Sync Don's iPad is not lit up and I'm unable to invoke that. Perhaps that will provide a clue for you.  Don

  • Downloading music from my ipod to itunes

Can someone help me in answering if it is possible to download music from my ipod to my itunes?

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
