Download or view PDFs?

I have uploaded numerous PDFs to my site, using the hyperlink-to-file option in the inspector. On the published site (published to MobileMe), some of the PDFs download when their links are clicked, and others simply open in the browser. Is there a way to choose which happens? I would like the files to download automatically.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Generally if the pdf is zipped and then linked to it will download without opening in the browser. If you link to an unzipped pdf file it will open in the browser (if the browser has the capability of displaying a pdf file) and then can be downloaded from that window.
I have an unzipped and a zipped pdf file linked to in this demo page.

  • Can't open, download or view PDFs - Tried all fixes recommended on this site!

I updated Firefox yesterday and now I am suddenly unable to open, download or view PDF documents on my mac. I just get a blank page in Firefox when I click on a PDF link.<br />
I tried every fix I could find on this forum and others:<br />
Disabling both the Acrobat NPAPI Plugin and the Acrobat Reader Plugin<br />
delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder to reset all file actions.<br />
installing another PDF reader plug-in<br />
    Cleared download history<br />
    Reset Firefox<br />
Checked status of Download Folder - no 'user set' values<br />
    Reinstalled Firefox<br />
    Fixed all Mac Permissions<br />
Still same thing PDF tries to open in a new tab - I just get a blank window… even when my PDF Preferences are set for the pop-up dialogue to show so I can choose whether to save, open or view.<br />
AND my Firefox preferences are set for viewing in Acrobat Pro X (this was how I had it set up before the update and had no problems - all PDFs opened in this application. (my preferred)
I am stumped. Anyone have any fresh ideas? HELP!! :) Thank you

The Adobe Reader plugin may not be working properly on Mac.

Disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
PDF files may be found under entries like Portable document or Adobe PDF document.
*Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader

  • For some reason I cannot download and view PDFs from a website, It works in chrome, but not Firefox, please help.

When attempting to download a PDF, (detailed bill description) the download appears in the OS X download folder. When attempting to click on that file, a warning comes up that the file is empty.
When I switch browsers and navigate to the same page, (Chrome), the document downloads and I'm able to view the document.
I updated the browser to version 33.1, but that didn't help.

Do you have parental controls enabled on your computer or have other security software that might interfere?

  • Undefined data download after viewing PDF's

Hi, and thanks in advance for any assistance. Everytime I view a PDF doc, in or outside a browser, a stream of download data begins and is unstoppable. In order to stop it I have to disconnect from my ISP and reboot my computer. This happens whether the PDF is downloaded or opened from my computer. Becoming very frustrating, specially considering that I am paying downloads by the MB. Adobe Reader 9.
    Thank you

    Elliot,
Your post actually linked to an article which explained the terminal command. I posted moments after you posted, and your post was not displayed, nor did it have any influence on my post. I am a slow typist.
It appears to me as if one is an "off" command and one is an "on" command

  • Problem viewing pdf in print mode

I am able to download and view pdf files, but when I go to print them I sometimes get a file that looks like the correct pdf file but there is no text in the file. It has the formatting correct, but the text is absent.
I am using Mac OS 10.6.8, Firefox 15.0, and Adobe reader 10.4.1
This problem also occurs with Safari.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Michael,
Thanks for the response but downloading and then opening with Reader produces the same result, a formatted form without text.

  • Unable to install reader/view PDF files

    Hi all,
Here's another wierd one... suddenly, I cannot download or view PDF files in Safari. I have attempted to download acrobat reader for a re-install, but neither safari nor firefox will download the complete file. Adobe says the file is 21 megs, but when downloaded (takes 3 seconds!!) file size shows 409 Kb everytime I try it. When I click the .dmg I get a message that says "unable to open file... unsupported file type" or similar statement. Any idea what might be happening here? I'm running 10.4.8 and everything used to work fine, although I hated Acrobat because it took 30 seconds to load!!!
    Thanks for your input.

Correction... downloaded Reader file is actually a folder named "DownloadReader.pkg" and double-clicking on it causes the message "File could not be opened because the specified format is not supported"

  • Safari auto-downloading previously view-only PDFs

    Hi everyone,
Begrudgingly working my way through Lion's changes in the middle of a work-week.. Not the best use of my time, but oh well!
I have an issue with certain websites, where on Snow Leopard, clicking a PDF report of something would open a new Safari window with the PDF displayed.
On Lion, when I click the same PDF report it automatically downloads and then opens in Preview.
In this particular circumstance, I bounce back and forth between reports quite often, and would rather not have 30 or 40 downloaded PDFs in my downloads folder.
Does anyone know if there is a preference or a command I need to activate in order to "view-only" these PDFs rather than have them automatically download?
I looked in Preferences but did not see anything relating to what I am looking for.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    +1 on this.
I'm in process of writing a textbook chapter, and I would like to be able to view PDFs inside of Safari rather than having to navigate to the downloads folder, opening the file, deciding if I want to keep it, and then managing the file.  Was better in the previous version where the pdf would display inside the window and I could read the paper's abstract and then decide if I wanted to save it.

  • Why won't Adobe reader no longer let me view previously download (from Safari) pdf's? I am running OSX 10.8.5 and have uninstalled and reinstalled latest version of Reader?

Why won't Adobe reader no longer let me view previously download (from Safari) pdf's? I am running OSX 10.8.5 and have uninstalled and reinstalled latest version of Reader. I get this error message "Adobe Reader could not open 'OD Test Bed Proposals_0.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."  I have tried changing the 'open with' options too. Thanks

    Try this:
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins
Trash the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin files
    Empty the trash
Relaunch Safari. You can now download undamaged PDFs.

  • Reader X issues Viewing PDF's with IE downloads turned off

First off, Our company has a policy that Internet downloads are turned off through GP for IE. We recently upgraded from Adobe 6.06 (had active x control to view PDF's online) to adobe X. We are looking for a way to view PDF's through the IE 8 browser with file Downloads disabled. When trying to view a PDF on the Web, we get "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded". Previously, the active x control in reader 6.x allowed viewing PDF's on the web. Is there any way to allow this in adobe X? can code be written to alleviate this? Is there a solution? HELP anyone please. It's driving me NUTTY!!

    Cyberdawg,
Try to turn off anything that enhances speeds his video through the video driver. That is most likely the problem..

  • Can't view PDFs over 500 kb in Chrome and MSIE, download as corrupted

I have Adobe Reader XI installed on a PC running Windows 7. I have it set as the pdf viewer for both Chrome and Internet Explorer. In either browser, when I try to view a pdf that is greater than 500 kb in size, it won't open and I get an error message that the file is corrupted. I can see if I download the resulting pdf that the file is always being truncated to ~500 kb in size in the process.  I can view pdf's smaller than 500 kb just fine in both browsers.  None of the other users in my office's network have this issue, just me.  I also have Acrobat XI Pro installed, in case that means anything.
I have been troubleshooting for a couple days and have no clue where the problem is, but since it happens in two different browsers, I think it might be Reader.  I did a repair installation and still no joy.  Ideas?

Can you download such a file to your local disk, then open it from there with Adobe Reader?  If the download also gets truncated, then it is a problem of your Windows installation or network connection (since Adobe Reader is not involved in the physical download).

  • How can I download and view a pdf with iphone?

How can I download and view a pdf with iphone?

If the PDF is an email attachment, you can view it by tapping on the attachment icon while you are viewing the email message. Another option is to set up a dropbox account and then use a computer to drop the PDF into your account. Install the iOS dropbox app and you can view PDFs there that way.
