Download PDF files instead of viewing them within Safari?

I would like to automatically download PDF files instead of having to view them within Safari.
I have disabled Acrobat as the default reader and now Safari has switched to using Preview. However, I cannot find a way to also disable Preview to allow the PDF file to be downloaded instead of displayed within a Safari window.
Anyone have any ideas on how to do this seemingly simple task?

It's amazing to me that simply asking Safari to default to auto download a PDF is so arcane. It's incredible that Apple doesn't have a Safari preference for this very simple action!
The Terminal and Onyx methods recommended above are just ways of accessing a setting for Safari that Apple hasn't added to Safari Preferences. As I understand it, settings like this are built into Safari - they just aren't readily user-accessible. This is why programs like Onyx and Safari Enhancer exist, to open up "hidden" features and settings.
I imagine Apple's developers debate these things, trying to decide what would be simpler to leave out to avoid complexity and what confusion (but allow third-party or Terminal methods to access) and which would be better added to the regular Preferences settings.
Since this is a feature you'd like to see in Safari Preferences, I'd recommend submitting this as feedback to Apple.
In the meantime, though, I'd consider it a good thing that there are built-in ways to get the setting that you prefer. Personally, I don't find the default settings such a hindrance. They're intended to help the "average" user (the new Mac user, the non-technical user, etc.) who wants a PDF file to just open, without having to understand how to work with it. For the more savvy user, there are multiple methods of downloading and/or opening PDFs. I'm rather like you - I prefer to download PDFs (in which case I use the Control-click method if I notice the link is to a PDF) or sometimes I allow the PDF to open in Safari, then Control-click on the open PDF and choose the option to open in Acrobat Reader. I find the latter method even smoother than downloading and then opening, in fact. If I decide it's a file I want to keep, I save it to my hard drive; otherwise I just close it.

  • Downloading .swf files instead of viewing them as a new tab

I use several browsers on several different machines, one is not able to access the internet for reasons unknown... so, I am using a laptop in the meantime.
My desktop would download .swf files (when clicked on) as default. the current browser merely opens them in a new tab.
the filetype is not in the options and i have almost all the same plugins (all relevant ones to my knowlege at least...)
i have the most recent version of the flash plugin

i know i can do it that way, but i want to know why my other firefox browser allows me to click the link to open it and it automatically downloads.

  • Safari 5.1 downloads .pdf's instead of opening them

Yesterday I upgraded to Safari 5.1 for my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8. Now when I click on a .pdf file on a page in Safari, the file downloads into my Downloads folder and two additional windows open up plus the .pdf (one is a blank page, the other is the contents of the Downloads folder). Now for each .pdf I open, I have to delete it from my Downloads folder into the trash rather than simply closing the .pdf when I'm finished with it. Is there a way to reset this to the way it used to be?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm having the same issue as reported by DocSarvis. I have never been using Adobe Acrobat on my Mac's - as the Preview plug-in for Safari have work perfect for me, that is until Safari 5.1.
Some sites, the PDF file is viewed perfectly wihtin Safari, as with earlier versions of Safari, but other including my Bank, somehow tricks Safari to download the file instead of just viewing it as before upgrading Safari.
Have anyone succeeded twiking Safari to view all PDF files from any sites - or do I really need to install the mention plug-in from http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/ - in order for Safari to work as before?

  • Adobe pdf files won't open while I'm online in FireFox even though I can download pdf files and then open them. It all freezes and tells me to check regedit. I have FireFox 5 and Acrobat 8, and I haven't found regedit, let alone know what to do with it..

If I click to open a pdf file when online with Firefox, the screen freezes and it tells me that the registry isn't updated and I should try regedit. About a month ago I had to wipe my computer clean and start all over again because of a virus that couldn't be cleaned out. I've since downloaded all necessary programs, Acrobat 8 one of them, but this message only appeared yesterday. Not sure why it worked up until now if it's the registry. But I don't know how to update it with regedit.

You need to get rid of all those duplicate files. Put these in the Trash:
    Adobe Reader 7.07 (all copies)
    AdbeRdr708enUS.dmg
This should leave you with one copy of Adobe Reader 7.08 in your Applications folder, with the correct Adobe icon.
Now run Disk Utility and choose Repair Permissions. When it's done, try double-clicking on the Adobe Reader icon and see if it starts normally. If not, make a note as to any error messages or unusual behavior and post again.

  • PDFs always downloads. How can I view them within the browser?

I have tried the following a Mozilla support suggestion to go to options and find Adobe Acrobat Document and change the action from "always ask" (which never happens) to "preview in Firefox" which is not listed. I am running Firefox 35.0.1. Can anyone help with this problem?

hello cathyvers, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware/malware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tool like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • How do I get the Linux version of Firefox to allow me to download mp3 files instead of playing them in Firefox (the windoze solution doesn't work for Linux)?

I've tried to modify a couple of "media" settings in about:config, but it still plays mp3s instead of allowing me to save them. In applications, mp3 audio is set to "Always ask".

Did this behavior change after an update, or has it continued for several Firefox versions?
Is there a visible player? If so, can you right-click it and see whether you get a plugin menu or a standard Firefox context menu?
For some plugins, there is a separate configuration dialog to indicate which kinds of content they will handle (I recall QuickTime having such a dialog).

  • Opening downloaded pdf files using Adobe instead of in Safari

I prefer to use full-feature Adobe software to view downloaded pdf files instead of Safari. How do I keep Safari from opening them in the browser and instead automatically open Adobe Reader when the search engine finds a pdf file?

I have just installed Adobe Reader 9. I am getting frequent system hangs (cannot do anything without cold re-boot) when using the product, in particular when using forms documents provided by Companies House, a UK government agency.

  • LSO: Download office files instead of embedded

    Hello colleagues,
I hope you can help me with my current issue in my current Learning Solution implementation.
Customer wants to use as part of a web based training different kind of Microsoft Office files, mainly powerpoint files, but for windows vista and windows 7 with office 2007 and higher versions Learning Solution always tries to download the files instead of show them embedded in the MS Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
I tried with some earlier versions of Windows, like Windows XP and this works just fine, but in Windows Vista and Windows 7, this is not working.
Have you seen a behavior like this one? If it so, how did you solve it?
Thank you for the help in advance!
    Regards.

  • Downloading pdf files in Safari

Lately I'm having trouble downloading pdf files that are open in the Safari window. I'm using the latest versions of Safari Adobe Reader on an IMac OSX 10.6.8. I used to download them simply with "command s", now it says "the document ... cannot be exported".
    thanks for any help,

Sorry, no, this did not help. I cannot recommend doing this. As a result, pdfs are no longer displayed at all in Safari!!
I had found a different solution, though, in the meantime. In the dark grey toolbar that appears at the bottom of a pdf window in Safari once you mouse over the spot, there is this adobe symbol which looks like a windmill. if you click on it, the adobe reader toolbars appear at the top of the browser window. if you click THAT save button there, it works just fine.

  • Mavericks 10.9.1. Freezes or trackpad becomes slow and unresponsive when viewing downloaded PDF files in Preview.Help!

The earlier post was my first attempt at posting and had some typos. Repeated with typos corrected.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 with preinstalled Mavericks.I now have the 10.9.1 update. Almost from the time of purchase in Nov '13, I have been experiencing freezes and slow & unresponsive trackpad. I have more or less narrowed this symptom as happening when viewing downloaded PDF files. The only option is to force eject, if available or shut down. I spoke to Support as I thought it was a RAM issue and they told me that in Mavericks RAM showing almost full was normal as it uses RAM differently. They took me through some resets and cleaning up which has helped a little but freezing stll happens. This never happened with my Macbook AIr running Lion. Any suggestions?

So a PDF file that you can view in Preview on your MBA causes your new MBP to lock up and/or slow down. Is this right? Also you say more or less narrowed down to PDFs with Preview but does the computer exhibit this behavior with other programs and if so under what conditions? And how much free hard drive space do you have?
Viewing memory use in Mavericks is different than with previous versions of the OS. Today it looks like we need to pay attention to what Apple calls Memory Pressure which is gauged by the bar graph in Activity Monitor and to the Virtual Memory being used. When the memory pressure graph bar gets too high it turns red and that's bad news. Looking at how much memory is being used doesn't help - I have a 16GB computer and with almost nothing running it still shows something like 15.79GB used but the memory pressure graph is just a think green line. So unless you see the memory pressure bar turning red lets not worry about memory usage at the moment.
If among the things AppleCare had you do was reinstall Mavericks then I recommend a trip to the Apple store - and take a problem PDF file with you to demonstrate.

How to make Adobe as your default viewer for all your PDF file instead of the Preview given? Thanks

you need to "Get Info" on the file first. Select it, right click and select 'Get Info' in the menu.
In the window that pops up, near the bottom, the "Open With" drop down menu needs changed. If the drop down menu does not present the one you want, select "Other" and find it.

  • Unable to download pdf files from emails or websites

I used to be able to download pdf files from emails and websites on my Windows vista 2007 computer, but am now unable to save or download them.  Is there something I need to adjust in my security system which hasn't changed?

If you're using Vista it's the same procedure as with Windows 7 (which I use) From Tools>Internet Options, click the Programs tab, and then click the Set Programs button. In Windows 7 this will open the Control Panel>Default Programs window. From there you want to click Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Scroll down the list to Portable Document Format (PDF). click it and click the Change Program button. Choose Adobe Reader as the default program, click Ok and then PDFs will download instead of opening in IE.

  • Downloading PDF files in OS X Mavericks

After upgrading to OS X Mavericks, I find that Adobe cannot open downloaded PDF files.

Felicia clearly stated that she had no issue viewing PDF files from the Internet within Safari. Rather, Reader was newly borking on the files that were direct downloads into the filesystem, or came as email attachments. A very different issue from plug-ins.
Felicia, if you had opened an Internet PDF in a browser plug-in, you must use the save feature in the plug-in, not File > PDF Export, or File > Save As... These approaches will create a munged PDF that will cause Reader to pop that dialog you saw. You must use the Save feature provided by the browser plug-in. This is on a hover-bar that appears slightly above the bottom of your browser window with the PDF displayed.
This may also explain the corrupted PDF email attachments too.
Ok. So you have reinstalled Acrobat Reader per CF McBlob's pointer and everything is messed up.
Drag Acrobat Reader to the trash and empty the trash again. Sigh. Now get a fresh copy from the Adobe consumer site. Once you download it, exit Safari. Install Acrobat Reader. See if you can see Internet PDF again in Safari. Follow my advice above on how to correctly save viable PDF files. See if your issues are solved. And eject the Acrobat Reader installer from your Desktop.
