From the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer
Then follow the instructions here > Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchases.

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. I am having a hard time authorizing my new computer for previous purchases on itunes. The support suggestion to go to store menu and select authorize is not materializing anything even remotely similiar. At the store I only see advertisement and topics at the bottom. Can anyone guide me thru this, it really should be easier.

If the computer's running Mac OS X, move the cursor to the very top of the computer's screen, click on Store, and choose Authorize this Computer.
If the computer's running Windows, press the Alt and S keys and choose Authorize this Computer, or click here, follow the instructions, click on Store in the menu bar, and choose Authorize this Computer.

I tried calling the apple help line but they want me to spend $69.99 for the help plan. these purchases are over a year old and on my old ipod now i want them on my new devices. I am starting to get very irritated!! please help.

Are you running the most current version of iTunes? If you are, you should be able to go into the iTunes Store, and click on Purchased under the Quick Links. (You have to be signed on, and the computer has to be authorized to do this). Once you have selected the Purchased from the Quick Links, you should see a tab for Books - your audiobooks should show up there and be available for downloading.
This is all assuming that you sync'd those books to the iTunes library on your computer. If you have not, you will need to sync the iPod first....
