Download software to computer or external hard drive?

I'd like to put Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 on my laptop, but before downloading it I'd like to get some advice on whether I should put it on my laptop's hard drive or an external hard drive. The reason I ask is suppose I end up getting a new computer in the next year or two...what would be the best way to still access my Photoshop software? Would downloading it to an external hard drive be a good solution, or are there problems that arise with that?
Solved!

You will have to reinstall the prgram on the new computer regardless of whether you install on an internal or external hard drive.  Let me explain:
When you install a program under WIndows, it not only creates folders for installation, but also makes changes to the windows registry and often add files to the windows folder.  If you simply copy the folders created to a new computer, the registry changes and other files are not copied.  Before you ask, there is no way to copy these, as the registry and other files would be quite different on the new machine, because Photoshop installs files based in part on what hardware you have.
That being said, you *CAN* store the files you created on an external hard drive.  That way, once you install Photoshop on the new computer, all the files you created on the old computer are available on the external hard drive, which only needs to be plugged in to the new computer.

  • When I try to import, I receive the following message: "An internal error has occurred: not enough memory".  I always download my photos onto an external hard drive.

Yesterday,I downloaded an update for Lightroom 5.  Now when I try to import, I receive the following message: "An internal error has occurred: not enough memory".  The message comes up right after I click import, before I choose a file to upload. Here is the information I can think of that might be needed to answer this question:
    - I always download my photos onto an external hard drive. It is about 10 % full.
    - It says I have Lightroom 5.6  64 bit
    - I am working from a newer laptop (Windows).  The internal drive on the laptop has 289 gb and I am using 61 gb total memory.
    - I have edited 2794 photos in Lightroom and it is all in one catalog.
    - I did not have this problem until I made the update.  I did have my first "bug" earlier this week when one of my photos had a line show up through the middle of it when I exported it. I was able to export it a second time without the line.
If there is more info. needed, let me know.  I do photography as a hobby and know enough about Lightroom to edit out blemishes and adjust color balance, but not too much more, so forgive my ignorance if this is an obvious fix.
    Sincerely,
    Adrianne

Not Enough Memory typically refers to RAM.  How much RAM do you have on your 64-bit OS computer?  Do you have other programs running that may be using most of the memory?

  • I am trying to gather all of my music into one place, but it is scattered throughout my computer and external hard drive, how can I put it all in one folder and then create one library off of it?

My first problem is that I need to get all of my music files in one folder, they are scattered throughout my computer and external hard drive and I am trying to get them all together. Afterwards I want to send this music to my microsd hard in my Samsung Galaxy s4, is there a way to proceed through this? Or at least one part of it?

    Consolidate your iTunes Library
As for the other part of the question, iTunes syncs with Apple devices.
Simply copy the media desired from the computer to the microSD card.  This has nothing to do with iTunes.

I downloaded several cds to my external hard drive in .mp3 format. Later, I copied them to iTunes. The songs only play when the external hard drive is plugged in. I tried to load the songs from iTunes to my iPhone and the songs don't play. I thought iTunes allowed me to transfer music to my iPhone and play it. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi skoorb1,
When adding music to iTunes, you can set it to either make a local copy of the file, or simply point to the original location of the file (for example, on an external hard drive). If it is set to do the latter, it will not be able to play or transfer those files when the external hard drive is not plugged in. You may find the following article helpful:

  • How can i transfer an itunes downloaded movie on to an external hard drive

Hi, I have just downloaded a movie from itunes for the first time. All of my previously purchased DVD's are on an external Hard drive to play directly on my TV. I wanted to move this downloaded movie on to the hard drive, but it will only play through itunes and will not play on the hard drive. Has anyone got any advice as to how I can do this. The movie is on the hard drive but will only play through my computer. Thsanks

Movies purchases via iTunes will only play in iTunes or on an iOS device.

  • Backing up computer on external hard drive

I have an external hard drive which I have partitioned into two sections. One is a bootable partition so I can boot from that should my computer drive fail and the other section is just for backup storage. The computer I want to back up is my PowerBook G4. Is there a widget that can help me back up everything including applications or can I just "drag and drop" from computer to external? I know that I can drag my user file to get all my stuff but want to see if I can back up my applications too!
Anyone have any feedback on this?

there are several ways to do it, try a utility such a carbon copy cloner...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
you can clone your whole mac to the external drive, so you have a bootable backup, or just backup selected areas

  • HT4527 I transeferred my itunes to a new computer via external hard drive, however over 4000 plus songs have a ! mark beside it and they cannt be played as itunes states that the location can not be found.  how do i fix this so all my music can be played.

    Hi
I recently moved my itunes to a new computer by using a external hard drive.
However my itunes music is not all playable.  over 4000 songs have a ! mark and when tried to be played or copied to ipod or iphone, it says that this song cannot be found and asks to locate it.
How do i fix this problem so that all my songs are available in itunes

It is probably best to start over. These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • New computer with external hard drive...

Current setup has iTunes Library, all files, located on an external hard drive....I'm going to implement a new laptop shortly, and will download the latest version on iTunes when I set it up.....
I'll have the destination for music point to that external hard drive...
Do I have to do something with that XML file with the new iTunes before importing all the music back into iTunes?? Also, is there something I'll need to do per the iPod software with the new laptop? or should it be smooth when I plug my iPod in for the first time into the new lapop?? Any further things I need to be aware of?
    THANKS.

Actually Hudgie, I'm posing another closely related question for you. I read with interest your reply to BuePod. I recently moved and added some new app's to my PC. After re-attaching all of my USB devices, I couldnt' sync my IPOD, so I reset, I downloaded new versions of IPOD and ITUNES software, did a restart, and now I have no music at all on my IPOD, and no playlists in ITUNES. What I do have is this; my ext hard drive (H) has a folder I called "Dave's ITUNES MUSIC LIBRARY" which has all of my actual music files in it. Then I also have the following files/folders on that same external H Drive:
    itunes music library.itl
    itunes 4 music library.itl
    itunes music library.xml
Then in my "C" local drive on my laptop PC the only APPLE related folders/files I have within the "my music" folder are:
    ITUNES, which in turn contains:
    itunes music
    itunes music library.itl
    itunes music library.xml
I've made sure that ITUNES preferences is pointed to the H drive, to DAVE'S ITUNES MUSIC LIBRARY. But apparently that may be a mistake. I may have inadvertently deleted a file or folder in my C drive under "my music." But the fact remains that my ITUNES cannot seem to find or connect to my music library on my H drive.
Can you point me in the right direction. Unfortunately, apple support wouldn't even help me as they consider this external hard drive on an XP platform "non standard" and will not even offer advice.
    Thanks in advance!

  • I downloaded all into a new external hard drive because my internal hard drive was failing. then got internal hard drive replaced by Apple Store. Now when I try to sync IPAD or IPhone to IMAC, photos will not transfer. Why? What shall I do?

How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • Downloading with itunes on an external hard drive

How can I not lose the music on my ipod while downloading when it has been moved to an external hard drive (my book)? Presently, I can't download new music to my ipod as it will erase what is there. Also, my playlists are gone! If I move the music back to the mac itself, the computer will freeze. Can someone help me?

    yes.
If I let her create her own library isn't it just a bunch of duplicate files eating up space?
yes, but it would be safer.

  • How to restore my computer from external hard drive

I recently had to re install a new hard drive and I'm trying to restore my computer from my external hard drive... how do I do that?

hold c boot from the 10.6 disk, Erase the drive with Security option > Zero: Partition Option: GUID Format: OS X extended J, quit install 10.6, reboot
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3251
Next you'll be in setup assistant,
If the external drive is a TimeMachine drive you can restore, your done.
If TM is corrupt your screwed and need to perform data recovery options. Stop.
If the external drive is a clone, hold the option key and boot from it, setup the internal drive and reverse clone.
    or
If the external drive a clone then set the new machine up with either the same or a different user name depending if the clone is good or bad.
Use the same name if the clone is bad, install your programs from fresh sources on the new drive, transfer files manually from the bad clone.
Use a setup different name if the clone is good, use Utilities > Migration Assistant program on the clone drive to transfer everything over.
You can use a same name with a good clone and chose to reinstall programs fresh and just transfer files you want from the good clone.
If the external drive a storage drive (just files) then set the machine up with the same user name as before and transfer files manually.
