Download Solaris 8 7/01

Hello,
I want to download Solaris 8 7/01. Can anybody provide me with the link.
-Mallik

@lulians:
Sun has discontinued Solaris 8, and I believe all links to it have been pulled.
(It is an old OS)
Your system can run Solaris 9 or Solaris 10 very well.
Solaris 9 would occupy a bit less hard drive space.
Solaris 10 has tons of new capabilities.
Start here, for download links:
http://www.sun.com/download/
Pull down the CD files, because an Ultra-10 never shipped with a DVD drive.
Also, please note...
This post was originally put into the Solaris on x86 forum, more than a year ago.
Your Ultra-10 is NOT* an x86 system.
It has a SPARC cpu in it.

  • Problem unzipping downloaded Solaris 10 from oracle site

    Hi All,
I have a serious problem downloading solaris 10 from the official oracle site. Whenever i want to unzipped the downaloaded zipped file containg the iso DVD solaris the file gets corrupted after a successful downlaod. Is it a problem from the source because i tried downlaoding it onto different computers and still getting the same problem. Can somebody help with a solution or an alternative site i get a good copy of the file.
    Thanks

I am having approximately the same problem. My download was successful on a dvd, but my problem is that my Ultra Sparc 60 came with a cdrom, thus, when I try to do the installation, I get an error message: "Boot device:/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@6,0:f File and args: can't open boot device" I have tried nvalias dvd .... without success. Help!If you downloaded the DVD ISO and burnt it to a DVD, you can't use it in a CD-ROM drive. CD-ROM drives don't read DVD's. Either buy a DVD-ROM for your U60 or find a way to Jumpstart the system.

    Try download via browser url:
You need a valid support contract not just Sunsolve account for many patches.

  • Where Do I Download Solaris for Intel?

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me where do I download Solaris 8 for Intel?
When I can use Solaris for SPARC will I have any problems
using the Intel one? Are they any differences in commands
    or so?
    Thanks
    Tom

You can no longer download Solaris for Intel. You can order it @
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html
When you get it sucessfully installed you should not see any difference in command set from The SPARC version.

  • Where I can download Solaris 2.6 x86 32bit?

Where I can download Solaris 2.6 x86 32bit at this site?

    Hi Gurus,
If i am not wrong try this website.
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/drivers/dca_diskettes/index.jsp
    Yes, you are wrong.
That link is only for the bootable floppy that was required to begin the installation process of Solaris 2.6 x86 from its CD media because in the 1980's and the early 1990's (the era of the particular Solaris being discussed in this forum thread) virtually no x86 systems could boot from CD. They could only boot from their floppy drive or their hard drive.
The DCA disk was not the OS. That floppy was included in the media kit that was purchased from Sun. Even if you create such a floppy from that link, you still need the OS media if you hope to proceed with the installation.

  • Download Solaris 9 ISO image

    hi,
Does somebody know where I can download Solaris 9 ISO images?
    BR
    Marcel

Solaris 9 is no longer available as a free download.
Older releases of Solaris 10 are no longer available as free downloads, either.
If you want it directly from the company, your only recourse is if you happen to have any support contract credentials with Oracle. You could then log a Support Request (S.R.) that asks for the company to send you the software on CD media. They would pull it out from their internal archives and eventually get it to you.
I can think of another alternative, but it's not a free alternative:
You can haunt your favorite online auction web site (for example, eBay) and purchase a full original media kit of CD's and manuals. As I type this, there are a few such kits avaiable at eBay, various Sol9 releases, both for SPARC and for x86.

  • New to solaris what should I be downloading solaris 10 or opensolaris?

well I have some experience with redhat but want to learn solaris as, well I really will never be able to get a linux/unix position if I only know one. hmm so I started looking around and got confused by the many versions now available of solaris. so after bout an hour is seems like...
    1) the solaris 10 os is released for free
    2) there are multiple solaris's based off this code but the one solaris is pushing is the opensolaris 2008.05.
in my mind I figure that solaris loosely relates to redhat then and opensolaris loosely relates to fedora.
    so here are my questions.
I see solaris is "free" but I can't figure out exactly what that means. I know for instance that me sitting at home at night learning will not be able to call or email sun for support (too bad that would be sweet). but once installed can I get applications, use the sun software installation system (whatever would be like yum to redhat) to get software, will it be from a repo sponsored by sun? also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software.
secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. I really don't want to waist time downloading and installing this if regular old solaris 10 is the better option. thanks you much for helping a newbie out. I have a seconds pc waiting for this and remember it is basically so I can get up to speed so my solaris unix will be on par with my quite limited linux experience. thanks again...

With Solaris you can use the Solaris Companion CD to get a few of the more generic programs or you can use sites such as Blastwave, SunFreeWare, Package Archive etc... to add more software of you can always compile from source.
OpenSolaris has a pkg install command which is analogous to yum and contains a lot more software then the Solaris Companion CD. If you hunt around you can get a list of all software that pkg install can install to your system.
also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I Plop in the DVD and hit "upgrade" or you can do fancy things like live upgrade if you plan in advance.
guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software. Patches that aren't labeled as critical or security, phone support, etc... are not part of "free" Solaris.
secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. There is a device detection tool that can be used for either OS so you can see in advance if your hardware is probably supported. OpenSolaris contains programs that are generally more current then those that are offered by Solaris.

  • How to Download Solaris Version of 9iAs Report services...

    Hello all..,
I am facing problem while downloading 9iAS Reports services Solaris verion. While downloading File segments , it is getting saved as text documents... (Or is it supposed to be saved as text document..?)
With the first option (savin as .cpio file) there is a problem . The file (.cpio) is very big file and we are not able to download it at a single strech... So can't go with this option...
Please any body can u please tell any work around.....?
    Regards
    -Raj.

I don't know whether it's supposed to be saved as text documents, alhough it's possible that you're download uuencoded files that are concatenated together and uudecoded by the unpack script.
However, you may be able to use an ftp manager to do the download. Tools like Windows Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/) have the ability to pick up and resume aborted ftp sessions, so you may want to check this out.
    Hope this helps,
    Danny
