Download speed bad in mornings too

hi all
i know that bt shape torrent speeds at night but i have tried to download this torrent on numerous occasions. day and night. but i cant download any faster than 114kbs. this is a bit over the top dont u think? any help with this would be greatly apreciated. thanks

Hi ganjiry,
There might be plenty of seeders, but all individual seeders can limit there uploads themselves, they can also seed to many people which limits each leechers download.
Plus those same seeders might also be on other ISP's here and abroad who also limit P2P.

haha, so now i'm thinking. I'm learning the terminal as fast as i can but there are several lines of codes and commands in there that throws up red flags to me that i don't fully understand. It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. There is something Definitely wrong with iOS 7 regarding DATA USAGE being logged to wireless carrier in for WIFI instead.
I read all the previous replies and same issue.
I rarely use my mac to sync....its all wifi sync for the last 2 years....never had this issue before... and i know it began with iOS7.... here is why....
My iPhone was at home when I updated to iOS7 connected to wifi...but it logged Data Usage to Rogers Wireless (700MB approx)...data will never do an update over 50mb in app store (it gives the warning to use wifi) I play a lot of games and pay for them so I always update through App Store.  2 weeks later, simposons halloween update (650mb)...at home, using wifi.
Rogers told me there was 700+mb data usage on the day of update and 650+mb data on oct 1.st (tapped out).
Went over my 6GB plan and paid the fees.
This has never happened before...It must come to apples attention by now...

Reply from mod, oh thats easy the files for hd are some huge that sky go can't play them and no app can stream hd due to this and so when they say they are they're really sd streams, if there was any way around this we would have done it now.

  • Slower 4G Download Speeds and Higher Pings Tonight

Stillwater, OK. Tonight, the DL speeds and ping times are worse than normal. UL speeds are unaffected.
Normal speeds, representative of the last few weeks...
Tonight's speeds (similar results to different test servers in the area)...
Ping times have more than doubled, and the download speed has been cut to ~25% of normal. If I try a test server on the east coast, I get something like the following (bad UL speeds too)...
Scary to think this could be due to the tower becoming overloaded (it is prime time) so early in the 4G game. The only other thing I can think of is that its particularly humid tonight, but why would that affect mainly the DL speed and not the UL speed?

Speeds were still slow this morning, so I power-cycled the modem (and router). Speeds are back to normal, so it seems like I just needed to reboot the gear.

  • Slow download speeds on macs v's windows

Hi, have newish MBP and iMac.  I also run several windows 7 based pc's.  Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly.  Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale.  I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Many thanks

Try turning off DNS pre-fetching. To do so enter this command in Terminal:

  • Time capsule download speeds are slow

    iMac <======>Time capsule (bridge mode) <=====> 10/100 ethernet switch <====> Comcast router/modem Arris TG862
Multiple iDevices are wirelessly connected to Time capsule because Arris TG862 couldn't handle more than 10 wireless devices without kicking them off.
Time capsule is in bridge mode, 4th gen, 7.6.4.
Have been running this configuration for over a year and download speeds @ 50Mbs for the iMac that is wired to the time capsule and an iMac that is wirelessly connected to time capsule.  AppeTV is hardwired to 10/100 ethernet switch as well, and has never had a problem before download / streaming movies.
In the past week, the wired download speed of the iMac has crawled down to 5-6 Mbs.  Wireless connections are .5-1 Mbs.
I have unplugged all devices, waited 10 mins, plugged in router/modem, waited 5 mins, plugged in switch, waited 1 min, plugged in TC, waited 5 mins, ran a test on Speedtest.net - still getting 5 Mbs wired and slower on wifi.  If I unplug the ethernet cable from the TC (WAN) and plug it into the iMac directly, I get 57 Mbs download speed on Speedtest.net.  Why would the TC suddenly be slowing down download speeds.  In all configurations, the upload speed is still 10-11 Mbs.  It appears that only download speeds are affected.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I've tried moving the ethernet cable from the iMac to a different LAN port on the TC.  Same slow speed.  The wireless download speeds are slow too, seems like the WAN connection is "throttling" download speeds no matter if it's wired or wireless.
I have pressed the reset button on the back of the TC until the front light blinks amber.  Then I went thru the setup to have it connected Ethernet, Bridge mode, create a wireless network, and DHCP from the router.  I got 12 Mbs download speed for the wired connection after doing this the first time.  Fifteen minutes later I tested it again using Speedtest.net and the download speed for the wired connection had fallen to 5 Mbs.  I unplugged the TC, waited a half hour, held the reset button down while I plugged it in, went thru the setup again, and still had a download speed of only 4 Mbs when I was done.
I assumed if the switch on the TC went bad that it wouldn't work at all, not just be slow.
    Any other suggestions?

Even the 'respected' tools like Onyx, if you look at what (each and every update) states in the "what is new" and changes will be to improve compatibility.
Never use or install anything (and I include OS X updates in that category) without cloning your system and having TimeMachine that is current, and backup(s) that will be off line.
Some cannot be trashed or deleted or removed without using an "uninstall app" or the installer, doing so without can mean having to reinstall first.
Or wipe the drive and restore from a known good backup set.

USB speed is limited to the speed of all the connected devices on the same bus. The bus is the portion of the computer's data traffic cop that connects several USB devices at once. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info to determine if there are any slower items connected to the same bus. Some USB ports may connect to a different bus under the USB section. If you want to see which bus a device has moved to after physically moving it, select Refresh from the View menu. Additionally some USB non-Apple devices may trip up if you put your machine to sleep either but closing the lid, or manually from the Apple menu, or automatically through the timer in the Energy Saver System Preferences. Some of these connection devices have latency issues. This means, they need a place to store their downloads before they come onto your computer. It may be their driver on the PC has settings to store something on the machine directly. Make sure your Mac isn't too full*:

  • Terrible download speed with Infinity 2 (less than...

I was a relatively early adopter of BT infinity.  When I first signup I recieved a consistent 70mbps+ down 80mbps up.
Over the last few months this has dropped to around 40mbps down and 12mbps up.
I posted here regarding the issue, contacted BT, and even Emailed the tech support guys recommended here on this very forum.
Unfortunately nothing improved, however since 40mbps down was okay for almost everything I needed to do I decided to leave it.
Now however, the situation has become dire.  For the last month my download speed has been consistently less than 4mbps with my upload speed being 2-3x as fast!
The BT speedtester refuses to complete due to the test taking too long. However I have managed to get a screenshot from speedtest.net.
To make matters worse, webpages down't always seem to complete, with many requests eventually timing out.
I am at a complete loss and would like some advice on where to go from here.  I have for all intents and purposes lost faith in the standard BT customer service having spent hours on the phone with them before when my speed dropped to 40mbps a few months ago.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi
I also am having the exact same issue. I am on the phone now and they are telling me now that is all my line can handle.
This is disgusting, the service is disgusting, cannot get an engineer out. For over 10 months i could get 60mbps steady downloads now i can't
    even stream a youtube video!!
even though i have another infinity 2 line in the downstairs living room getting 65mbps steady downloads from the same exchange.

  • 2009 Macbook issue: download speed limitation

    Hi
Mi wife got a late 2009 white macbook that's driving me crazy. Despite we got a 7Mbit ADSL connection and all others macs at home (we got 2 more 2008 macbooks and a 2008 macbook pro) with the very same OS version (10.6.4) and network settings are working properly and downloading at full speed, her one looks to have some kind of speed limitation in download to around 1.5 Mbps.
The ping and upload speeds are the very same of other computers, and apparently randomly the download speed also on that computer gets back to around 7 Mbps...
I just spent the afternoon doing tests and I got nowhere but maybe I found a pattern...
    First what I excluded:
-doesn't depend on how it's hooked to the net, same behavior by ethernet or wifi in both cases the other service was off
-any other mac using the same connection is working properly, did side by side tests
-ping is always the same on both computers used for test
-it is not a DNS issue
-deleted and created a new position in Network panel
    -did several restarts, no solution
-doesn't depend on a specific app being used (but maybe apps can matter, see below)
-none of possible fixes I found online did work
-probably it isn't related to OS version or updates, this issue has likely been there since a lot of time, and over more os updates (not really sure of this, we had unrelated netwok issues and changed provider for that reason in last year, we cot a stable and uniform environment just recently)
    Now what I noticed:
-As soon as the computer is started and I open a single browser (be it Safari, Chrome or Firefox doesn't change) speedtest.net test is ok, 7Mbps download.
-work and navigate with it, it's ok, download speed remains 7Mbps
-As soon another internet using application is opened (Mail, another browser) the connection speed drops to 1.5 Mbps (this is ALWAYS the limit, no relevant fluctuation in this)
-If I close any of above apps and remain with a single browser, running tests initially report still the 1.5 limit, but shortly after (one or two minutes) the speed gets back to 7Mbps
My wife needs to work with Mail, Skype, and at least two browsers open, so this limit is giving her great troubles

    taylor.henderson wrote:
-none of possible fixes I found online did work
This doesn't really help narrow down the problem
    {quote}
doh, you are right... sorry... the possible fixes I had found around are the ones reported right before...
Create a new user account on the problem computer and see if the slow speeds and strange behaviour persists in it.
    I did, it does...
    - created a new user and logged in
    - opened Safari, speedtest returns 7Mbit/s in download
    - opened Firefox, after a little speed drops to 1.4
    - some successive test starts slow (1.4) then sometimes speeds up, but most remain at 1.4
    - start chrome too, same behaviour
    - close Safari and Firefox, wait a little (1 or 2 minutes) do the test with Chrome, back to 7Mbit/s
Then go through stuff like this http://www.gballard.net/macrant/osx_troubleshooting.html.
I went through it and did most of what's suggested there (it's a little complex because when I am not working my wife is usually using her macbook to study and needs to use it all the time)...
    - unused disk space is 95,6 GB
    - booted in single user mode and did a fsck -fy
    - repaired permissions
Nothing changed, both the behavior takes place in new user account, and in main one, where any internet using application (Mail, Skype...) opened together causes the download slow down...

  • BT Infinity 80/20 true download speed not matching...

I upgraded to the BT Infinity 2 (80/20) service in April having previously been on the Infinity 1 (40/2) service. However since then no matter what time of day (or night) I try I cannot truly download anything at close to the speed I was quoted.
The speed I was quoted for my line was 76/20 and from running the BT speed test I believe my IP profile is set to 77.43 down and 20 up. The download speed quoted from the BT speed test site appears to reflect this:
BT speedtester: 72.28Mbps/9.51Mbps (ip profile 77.43 down and 20 up) although upload seems low.
I also get a similar result from speedtest.bbmax:
    BBMax: 74938kbps / 12139kbps
However whenever I attempt to actually download anything at all (windows files, bbc iplayer download, thinkbroadband files, and many other download files) I get no where near this and tend to average around 35Mbps-45Mbps. The speed/download also seems to fluctuate and pause quite a lot. The highest speed I have ever got that lasted for more than a few seconds was around 54Mbps but this was a one off.
Here are the results of some other tests I ran:
Speedtest.net (Dublin): 58.88Mbps / 10.18Mbps (I live in Belfast and this seems best one)
Visualware Single Threaded: 48.1Mbps / 17.0Mbps (this seems to closely reflect what I see on downloads)
I am testing with Ethernet cable direct to BT HomeHub 3 (so no wifi or powerlines) and I have tried 3 different PC's/Laptop's just to rule out any issue with my own PC, setup, etc. I've also tried switching off firewalls, antivirus, etc.
I am hoping someone can please help with suggestions of what this could be. At the moment I can only think of congestion (that's 24/7!!), or there is some issue with my profile (maybe its set too high?), or there is throttling at play here (I have read from other posts that there have been problems in Northern Ireland so maybe this is BT trying to stabilise things?).
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Cheers for the advice. I'll try out a few of the download managers you mentioned to see what I get.
Makes sense I suppose although the visualware results I am getting are still throwing me (when I know others are getting much better) and that's perhaps playing into my thoughts something strange was going on. The fluctuations and pauses/delays are still slightly annoying too but maybe that's another story...
Trust me, it will solve your speed issues! Oh and below is a screenshot I just took of a download I did from bbc iplayer, top gear episode which was nearly 600mb & downloaded in less than 1 minute, maxed out my connection at just over 9mb/s, the transfer rate in the image is a tad bogus as I max out at 9.4mb/s, not 9.7 it shows but you get the idea
Finally got chance to try the IDM download manager tool as well as a couple of others and I got the high speeds (very similar to what you had) so I guess I can see my higher speeds being used after all :-)
I'm still a little bit wary that my connection isn't the best as does still seem to fluctuate and pause a lot and my ping is usually high 30's or 40's whereas I have seen other people report getting ping in the 20's.
However happy to mark this as resolved. Cheers for everyones help.

  • A browser with download speed limit?

It sounds weird but on Linux I can't find a browser that allows to set a download speed limit.
I found an extension for Firefox but it works only on Windows.
I know the existence of download managers like d4x, wget, jdownloader, etc... but some downloads can only be done by browser.
I know trickle too but if I want to change the speed limit I have to 'restart' the command (interrupting the current download).
Then I didn't find an extension for Chromium.

I was able to implement [global] throttling with wondershaper. You will need to modprobe sch_cbq if you use the CBQ script (not sure about the HTB one). I use the CBQ version.

  • G580 - pathetic download speed & wifi connectivity

I had purchased G580 laptop in October & upgraded to windows 8. Since then, the wifi problem has been regular. After   updating the drivers the wifi is mostly. Once in a while I have to restart the router..  That's still OK, but the download speed is really pathetic.
I have another old Acer Laptop with windows 8 (upgraded) too. I have an 8 MBPS broadband connection. The Acer laptop has 1 Mbps download speed without any hindrance. But, the Lenovo G580 is giving 250kbps downloads, that too with regular stoppages. Another big issue - while.. this dead slow download happens, not even a single webpage opens.. Regular "error loading" messages.
Kindly help in rectifying the issue as I have updated all the drivers through windows update as well as lenovo site.
I'm using a bitdefender antivirus, will that have any problem with wifi speed ??
Kindly advice as the only other option is to discard the laptop.
    thx
    Satish

    hi satishrk1978,
If you have the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Adapter, you can try to:
    1. Update your wireless card driver to v10.0.0.221, get it here, otherwise skip this step.
    2. Depending on your brand of router (and if applicable), make sure you disable WMM QoS (Wireless Multimedia) and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
    3. Use a WPA2-PSK TKIP or AES encryption.
    4. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz), try to use only the 2.4Ghz band.
    5. Temporarily disable any running firewall / antivirus software.
    5. After applying steps 1-5, try running a speedtest again via www.speedtest.net.
    Let me know the result.
    Cheers
