Download Speed Capped?

We've had Unlimited Fibre Optic for a few months now and whenever I've downloaded something, whether that be using my browser or programs like Steam etc. to download games, I've never seen my download speed go over 4.5 mb/s however when I do a speedtest, I get over 35 mb/s consistently. Surely this isn't right and I'm starting to think Sky has capped download speed for whatever reason. Any help is appreciated and my router stats are below along with the speedtest..  Broadband LinkDownstreamUpstreamConnection Speed40000 kbps9999 kbpsLine Attenuation8.6 dB0.0 dBNoise Margin26.2 dB31.31 dB  http://www.speedtest.net/result/4544529825.png

You are likely confusing megaBITS and megaBYTES.
8 BITS (b) = 1 BYTE (B)
So 4.5megaBYTES per second (4.5MB/s) = ~36megaBITS per second (36Mb/s)
Capital B or lower case b makes a huge difference.
Broadband speeds are (almost) always quoted in megabits per second, web browsers and apps often show speeds as megabytes per second, hence the confusion.

  • Re: BT Infinity 2 IP Profile - Download Speed "Cap...

My BT Infinity 2 IP Profile has been consistently the same for nearly 2 years since I first signed-up for it and became available in my area, i.e. Upload Speed (US) = Up to 20 Mbps  / Download Speed (DS) = Up to 77.47 Mbps.  I was regularly getting US = 14-17 Mbps / DS = 73-75 Mbps.  Upon doing regular speed checks on my line using the BT Wholesale site, about 4 weeks ago, I noticed my IP Profile DS was reduced to/capped at (Up to) 65.74 Mbps.  Since, I have been receiving the same US as before but DS = 62-64 Mbps.
FYI, I have attached two screenshots but I am reluctant to give my phone number openly on here so can you provide a means for me to send it privately please.
I initially contacted BT Broadband Faults a few times, they did the usual bull**bleep** basic checks to make sure it wasn't my equipment and to give it 10 days to see if it was DLM.  I even hooked up a BT HH5 router to ensure any further line testing was done by the BT book.  After several days, it was evident it wasn't DLM despite BT Broadband Faults insistence to give it several more days until around 11.04.15, to which I did.  By this time, it was crystal clear it was not DLM and Broadband Faults were obtuse upon my persistence that I wanted the specific reason as to why my DS had been reduced/capped by 11 Mbps, and tried to palm me off with excuses such as "copper wire degredation". They refused to contact OpenReach or report it to them.
Note, I had a phone line fault in early Feb 2015 which the OpenReach Telephone Engineer changed lines to fix the fault at my local cabinet.  I was their when he did this and showed me that there weren't many Infinity customers locally.  My line speeds remained the same after and all stable.  I can rule out cross-talk.
I have made 3 complaints via the BT portal regarding this issue and all resulting call-backs have originated from India. Not one can categorically tell me the specific reason why I have, in essence, had my DS capped.  Just the usual bull**bleep** guesses by people not technically qualified to make such diagnoses.  All have been obtuse and said that my current DS remains within the terms of my contract, blah, and refuse to give me a reduction in price of my BT bill.  I accept this is correct, but they will NOT tell me the exact reason why my DS has been reduced/capped!!!!
I do not think it is unreasonable to demand to know the specific reason why the product I pay for has been reduced without an honest explanation why.
Please can you look into my case and any feedback would be much appreciated as this frustrating me a lot.

Sounds like you are being affected by the G.INP rollout to Huawei cabs but the modem being incompatible with it.

  • Download speeds halved

I'm hoping to get some help with an issue iv'e been having with my download speeds as of late. On June 23 my modem went out for about 30 minutes and when it returned online my download speeds have been cut in half. I subscribe to the blast service and was getting about 125 MBs down on average. Now my speed is capped out at 59 MBs and it wont go passed that. I've spoken to tech support on several different occasions and every solution that was offered yielded no results. I'm using a Motorola surfboard sb 6183 and the only difference I noticed is that i'm now getting all 16 downstream channels as oppose to the 8 I was getting when the service was first initiated. I've tried using other modems to no avail as well as having a tech come out and found nothing wrong. If anyone could shed some light on this or look into why i'm experiencing this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to know what's going on as well, this is first night taking forever to watch a show on Netflix, decrease in speed been happening past month, I understand bandwidth, had 4gb bandwidth in Alaska which is faster than xfinity this past month, maybe they need top add more cable boxes or something, Something has to be done we not only ones in twin cities to complain

  • Download speeds limited to 8-9mbps for FIOS 35 service?

I've *NEVER* had a problem with verizon fios download speeds until last night (7/11) and today.  I've always been able to achieve the d/l speeds of whatever my service is.  When I had 50mbps service, I'd get 50mbps download.  Now I only have 35mbps service and I've always got 35mbps service *until yesterday.   Now my download speeds through various services and bandwidth tests seem to be capped at 8-9mbps.  Is anyone else seeing this sudden drop and cap in download speed??  I'm located in Atco in South Jersey.

Ok on the 35 mb/s standard in your location.
I doubt Verizon is deliberately capping you.
Are you using a few different servers at www.speedtest.net to test your speed?
Do you have more than one device (Mac or PC) you run the tests with and get the same results?
If the answer is yes to both of those troubleshooting questions, I'd suggest you call Verizon tech support and ask for help with the problem.  It could be local to your ONT or something else at their end than needs looking into and correcting.
    Good luck.

  • Verizon DSL download speed not as advertised?

Well, I've been a customer of Verizon for over 5+ years now and I've had Verizon DSL for quite some time. I'm not too sure if I have either the 256kbps package or the 768kbps download speed.
My DSL modem box model is the Westell 327W.
My problem is, it has always reached a download peak of 95.4kbps, as if it was capped at that download speed. The speed never really jumps up and down, just a steady download rate of 90 ~ 95 kbps through out the day, even though I use DSL.
There are no other users besides myself that uses the internet, and wireless settings have been turned off to ensure my internet is not shared.
I do not have any type of virus on my computer, since I've switch computers very often with fresh hard drives because I tend to upgrade alot.
My current hardware and operating system specs are:
    ASUS Crosshair III Formula Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU [Black Edition / Overclocked: 4GHz]
    2 x ATI XFX HD 5870 DDR5 (2 x 1GB) 2GB GPU [Twin Crossfire / Overclocked]
    8GB (4 x 2GB) Crucial Tracer 1600 DDR3 RAM [Overclocked]
Corsair (850W Watt) Power Supply Unit
Cooler Master HAF 932 Full ATX Case
500GB Western Digital Caviar HD (Main)
    250GB Western Digital Caviar HD
Prolimatech Megahalems AM3 CPU Cooler / Heatsink
    2 x Asus DVD/CD Burner
    Logitech G500 Gaming Laser Mouse
    Logitech G15 2-Tone Gaming Keyboard
    LG 30" LCD Widescreen Monitor [2560 x 1600 Resolution]
    Windows 7 (64Bit) Operating System
    Verizon Westell 327W DSL Modem
So I doubt it is hardware related.
My question is, is DSL suppose to be this slow and capped at 95 kbps download rate, or shall I contact a Verizon high speed internet rep because something is wrong?
also, can i "upgrade" to the new Verizon DSL with the new 1mbps download rate, for the same price I am paying right now? because I'm paying the same exact price for a slower/older version of DSL right now, which makes no sense, and I could cancel my DSL any time because my 2 year agreement has been reached years ago,
    Thank you
    Regards, Chris
    Cheers.

I doubt the problem is with your DSL service. The Transceiver speed correspond exactly to what the 768/Kbps plan would provide. The transceiver statistics say that your DSL link is running at Kbps on the downlink side, and Kbps on the uplink side. That is the provisioning for the old 768/128 Kbps plan. If you cannot get a Kbps downlink, and/or Kbps uplink it isn't because of the DSL link.
The DSL link runs at the lower of either the provisioned speed, or the highest speed your DSL Modem can negotiate with the Central Office Equipment. You are at the provisioned speed.
So either the problem is further upstream (beyond the DSL connection ), or on your computer, perhaps due to anti-virus, or firewall settings.
You might want to run a network analyzer program such as http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov/ from the Argonne National Laboratory, and take a good look at the details of the test.

  • Limit download speed

I just started using mac so I have no knowledge on how to use it. I share a network with my brother and so far I have not found an application that allows me to download stuff and limit the download speed. Every time I start downloading stuff the download browser will take up all the bandwidth and my brother is left with none. Is there a way to cap the download speed with safari or use an application that can do it when downloading.
Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated

    Hi,
You would need to apply a service-policy to police the bandwidth to that user. As you will most likely be natting to the internet, you will need to apply this policy to the inside interface attaching to the user host. You would need to rely on windowing af the PC connection also to ensure the stream is actually slowed absolute. By this I mean that the download has already hit the ASA by the time we want to slow it down, so if its not a TCP connection, you may find that the ASA will need to buffer the rest of the exceeding traffic. Unlike routers, the ASA does not drop exceeds, it throttles.
access-list USER1 extended permit ip host 10.1.1.18 any
    class-map USER1
         match access-list USER1
    policy-map Police-User1

  • Crawling Wifi Download Speeds from iTunes Store

Ever since upgrading to iTunes 10.7, my download speeds from the iTunes store have slowed to a crawl. Prior to upgrading, I was able to download video podcasts and other media @ over 10 mbps over wifi. I have tried this on several other networks, and am experiencing the same speed issues. This does not appear to be a router issue or a FiOS issue; I have done all of the usual troubleshooting and do not seem to have any issues with download speeds outside of the iTunes store.
I am running the iTunes 10.7, and have updated OSX to the latest release of ML.
Is anyone else experiencing ridiculously slow download speeds through the iTunes store using iTunes for Mac or iOS 6 devices?

I have a 50x5 Mbit cable business class modem, from Time Warner, in my house (doing that give me priority bandwidth over other residences).... Also as a business class there's no data caps or port blockings.  The most I EVER get from the iTunes Store is 4-5MBytes/sec (about 35 Mbits)... Usually I get 1-2 MBytes/sec to iTunes or any device
    My guesses are
    1) Apple just doesn't have the bandwidth during certain times
    2) I notice they throttle accounts. If I download an entire hd season, I start out fast, then it slows after a few hrs... Im guessing apple has a max data cap per day then slows you down.
    3) I also don't think Apple is capable of handling all the new 35-50Mbit connections that are now readily available from the big cable companies.

  • How to control download speed

Currently firefox downloads files at 220 kbps. I want to cap the download speed to 100kbps. Please help.

Hey I am quite novice related to computers.. Could anyone please tell me the exact procedure of how I can limit the download speed. I saw the solution posted to my question but I was unable to execute what was asked. Can someone tell step by step procedure. I am sure this will help a lot of people like me.

  • My download speed - Problem or just this slow?

Well I've always had bad download speeds, guessing because of my area and such, but they seem to have gotten worse lately. My max download speeds used to be around 120kb/sec but now I'm lucky if they even reach 60kb/sec ( not in peak times )
Now I'm not exactly networking savvy, but I did that BT speed test and the results are:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 413 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1248 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
And this is what's in my gateway about my modem I guess:
    Modem Type:
    Built in modem - ADSL
    DSL Line (Wire Pair):
    Line 1 (inner pair)
    Current DSL Connection:
    Rate:

    19.0 dB
    Attenuation:

    31.5 dB
    Output Power:
    16.1 dBm
    11.9 dBm

    Channel:

    DSLAM Vendor Information
    Country: {3840} Vendor: {ALCB} Specific: {0 }
    ATM PVC:
    0/38
    Rate Cap:
    788 kbs
    Attenuation @ 300kHz:
    55.8 dB
    Uncanceled Echo:
    -10.5 dB
    Ok
    VCXO Frequency Offset:
    23.8 ppm
    Ok
    Final Receive Gain:
    34.5 dB
    Ok
    Excessive Impulse Noise:
    0
    Ok
Is that around about right? Is there any other information I should disclose? Do I have a problem or am I just unfortunate enough to have these bad download speeds?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Because you accidently disconnected it, you'll need to remain connected for 3 -5 days (which shouldn't be long now) and allow the profile to rise, I dont think it will rise, but it may just nudge the system and may work...
Alternatively you could contact the mods, and ask for an SNR reset which should give your sync speed a boost and in turn give the system a kick up the backside and tell it to get its ass in gear .  You can contact the mods using this link http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951 .

  • P2P / Download Speeds / FON

    Hi People
Can anyone help me with these few issues I'm having, I've recently signed up to BT and I'm having nasty, capped P2P download speeds. I have looked at the other forums and seen this is due to fair usage for all etc. etc. but what I cannot find is whether:
    1. If its the BT home hub that regulates this capping speed while I use P2P connections? And if I ditch the hub and use my own router will this stop the capping speed?
    2. FON - Can I turn it off?
              - If anyone connects to it will this interupt my connection speed? if not then the router is capping me a pertage of my total speed for FON connections no?
    Many Thanks

    Hi there
item 1 no bt cap you not your hub
2 fon yes you can turn it off but to be honest you wil not notice any difference if some one is using fon at the same time as you are using your connection also remember you can use fon else where in over 2 million places for free a nice bonus

  • Broadband Speed Cap

Ok, well I think I may have been capped.
I'm on the BT Infinity Unlimited Option 3, and my limit is obviously a hidden 300GB, I understand that. What I don't understand is that this is the FIRST time I've ever gone over the limit so I'm not sure how it works and I need some information.
I think I may have gone over my limit, which is why my internet is being capped from 6PM till 12AM (midnight).
When will my speed cap be removed?
    Thanks in advance!

The problem is I don't remember ever downloading 300GBs.
I've filled out a form to BT Customer Support to check for help. I don't remember my account details to sign into my account.
I usually LIVE streamed my Xbox 360 console on to a website, but that doesn't use download as i'm UPLOADING to a website, so i'm really unsure if i'm even at the cap.

  • Very slow iTunes download speeds

I've been having slow download speeds in iTunes for a while now. Downloading a 1 hour TV Show used to take 1 hour or so. Now it's taking 11 hours. Xfinity speed tests say I'm getting 28 mb/s downloads.
    Some info:
    iTunes 10.6 for Windows
Apple Air Extreme - the pc is hard wired to the router
    Comcast as ISP

  • Slow Download Speed for VHD file

Hello, I've looked for the answer to this problem on multiple different sites, but to no avail.
I'm trying to download a 29.2 GB VHD file that crashed up in the cloud so that I can attempt to fix it, or recover the files. Unfortunately, I am achieving abysmal download speeds, even though speedtest indicates that it should be much higher. For example,
right now speedtest indicates that I have a 5MBs connection, but my download is capping at about 1 MBs +- 20KBs. Does anyone know the reason for this? Is there anyway to get around this?
    Thanks in advance.

You can achieve up to 30 gigabits/sec of egress for a locally redundant storage account and up to 60 MB/sec or up to 500 requests per second for a single blob (See Azure Storage Scalability and Performance Targets article
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/storage-scalability-targets/ for more info).
You can also turn on storage analytics/metrics to find out the total egress that you were able to achieve in Azure Storage (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn782843.aspx)
to rule out the possibility of hitting the scalability limit.

  • I think I have Been Speed Capped

    Hi all
I am on Option 3, Unlimited....
Last month my hard drive packed in and I lost all my iTunes library, Apple let me download it all again and my download usage for last month was 220GB.
At 4.30 today I did a speed test and I got 23mbps (my profile is set at 25mbps) with an upload of 1.6mbps (profile is 2mbps).
At 5.13 I did another test and my download speed was now 2.25mbps and the upload was is still 1.6mbps.
I changed anything on the router that I though could be at fault, I connected my laptop directly to the HH3 but the speed stayed the same.
It has now dawned on me that I might have been capped, but how can this be?
I thought the download limit was 300GB?  I used 220GB last month and am currently sitting at 40GB now, I did not receive a letter or email from BT to tell me that this was happening.
The only thing I can check is that after 12am my speed goes back to normal.
If it does where do I stand?  I know I did not go over the limit last month.

    Think I spoke to soon.
My download is still the same but my 10mbps sync speed is barely getting over 1.6mbps when I test it.
It was working fine up until 2pm this afternoon, getting 8mbps when I tested it, I have not changed anything so I have no idea what is going on.
I have tried to use the BT speed tester but it keeps freezing.
This is really starting to annoy me now, seems whatever BT gives me works for about a day then screws itself up.

  • Who has the Unlimited Data Plan and has Been Speed Capped when You went over 5Gig?

Just checking to see how many others have been speed capped to 200Kb on the unlimited data plan when they went over 5Gig in a billing cycle? (you can get a one time reprieve if you call them at 1-888-483-7200)
Did they ask you to change your plan to 10Gig and Update your Equipment and sign a new two year agreement?
Did you know that Sprint is offering unlimited Data on their 4G network and that Verizon is trying to lock down customers that are not on 2 year contracts? (Gives them time to catch up with the competition) Marcus in Fraud and Investigation told me (when I told him that Sprint was offering Unlimited Data)  "...That is a better option..."
I am now looking into other options along with allot of the rest of you.

I was instructed to call that Fraud Department number and was treated like I had broken some kind of law instead of going over the 5 Gig fine print limit on my unlimited grandfathered in account. They would not even consider giving me a one time do over for being a MiFi newbie. I am hearing class action suit rumblings out there!!
