Download speed drop

The issue i have been having is that after a day or so my download speeds for my internet are crap. I get 10mb download speeds and when i check it after a day or so its only around 2.5mb. At first i thought it was just my internet but then i started rebooting the router and checked my speeds after i rebooted the router and bam it was back up to 10mb download speed. So i thought maybe it was just a flook so the next time it happened. I tested the speeds just before i rebooted the router and it was running about 2.5mb download speed and right after i rebooted the router it went back up to 10mb download speed.
Is there a setting i am missing in the router that i need to check off or somthing?
I have a linksys  Wireless -N broadband Router WRT160N

Did you enable "logging" in the router?  If so, turn it off and see if that corrects your problem.
Are you running P2P (peer-to-peer) software?  If so, this is a known cause for router slow downs and disconnections.   Stop the P2P and reboot router.  It may take up to a week for the router to completely clear all the P2P junk out of its memory, and return to normal.
If the above is not your problem, then
1)  Please state your ISP
2)  Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT160N).
3)  Please do the following test:
Power down your entire network.  Using an ethernet cable, connect your modem directly to your computer.  (Do not use the WRT160N for this test.)  Power up the modem and computer.  Verify that you have a working Internet connection, then proceed with the following:  (Even if your Internet connection does not work, state this, and proceed.)
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   Copy all the results to your next post.  To do the copy, highlight the results, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) keys and the paste (Ctrl-v) keys.  If your "IP address" does not start with 192.168 , then for security reasons, erase the last half of your IP address.
Kudos! Thanks!

  • Wireless downloading speeds dropped

    Hi,
Really unsure about tech stuff but on 24/09/2014 had major issues with my wireless speed dropping hugely. The night before was able to stream TV, play games and many other activitives at the same time. The following morning found that every device I own on the property had close to 0 connection speeds though signal strength was good. Did the BT wholesale speed check found my wireless download speed was less then 1 on other occasions less than 0.1. When the ethernet was connected to the router speeds were over 37mbps so its clearly my wireless. Did the inssider check and my link score is 71, Im on channel 6 atm. Not sure if anyone has had similar issues and resolved them, BT told me the fault was on my property but seems a bit flippant as the change was so dramatic and occurred overnight. Any help would be grateful.,

    Which Homehub are you using?
    Try a different channel.

  • Opening second tab, no address causes download speed to drop from 160 kbs to less than 5 kbs and sits there doing nothing, does not happen with IE, why is this

after firefox updated from 27 to 28, when i download a file, play music, watch a video, or run a speed test, normal speed is about 160 kb/s (dsl connection 1.3 Mb/s) - just opening another blank tab (not any address) or try to open another page like google search page, download speed drops to less than 5 kb/s - downloading stops, and second page does not open, why is this happening, it does not happen with internet explorer and the version of IE i have is out of date,
history/cookies all clear automatically when close, i have disabled all add on, run malware, adware searches - show no problem, norton antivirus is up to date, i have spent hours on phone with ATT isp and connection is showing no problem - if i run a speed test it shows good, if i try to run a speed test and open second tab - speed fails and speed test will not even finish, ATT suggested I try the same thing in IE and there is no problem - so it appears to be an issue with Firefox 28

What is the CPU load when this slowdown happens?
Are you using a specific driver in Windows to mange the internet connection that might not get enough processor time to run properly?
It is also possible that other (security) isn't able to do its work and takes additional CPU time.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem if starting Firefox in Safe Mode didn't help.
    See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Airport WEP Security drops my download speed

I have two routers: one from my ISP (which issues my IP addresses) and an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (which serves as a bridge). My DSL speed is 5MB, which I've been getting with both routers unsecured. I secured the ISP router and nothing changes as far as my speed is concerned, but when I secure the AEBS, my download speed drops to 3MB, a significant drop. Any suggestions how to correct this?

    1 don't use WEP, it's crackable in 30 seconds.
2 don't use two routers unless you have to
3 if you must use two routers, set them to use different networks

  • Yosemite Drops WiFi Download Speed 25%

I really had no problems with Yosemite on my late-2013 MBP Retina...until I did a Speedtest.net test of my Internet speed, in this case over a wi-fi connection to my router.
I routinely get 55-60 Mbit/sec download speeds, but with Yosemite I got only 40-45 Mbit/sec, roughly a 25% reduction. In case it was just a slowdown from my ISP, I checked using wired Ethernet, which showed my usual 55-60 Mbit/sec throughput. Toggling immediately back to wi-fi, the speed went back down to the 40-45 Mbit/range.
I saw others with wi-fi issues under Yosemite and tried the proposed solutions that some said fixed the wi-fi speed (and wi-fi drops) problems--turn off Bluetooth for one. Nothing helped. So I restored the Time Machine backup of my Mavericks installation and...everything wifi-related is back to normal. Same network speeds as before Yosemite.
Lesson learned--always do a full backup before a major OS upgrade just in case.

Any other my phone (Samsunf S3 for ex.) have no such issue in same location...
Please advise what can cause such issue or it is my Sony hardware specific issue ? How can I solve it ?
This issue is not router specific, because same behavior at home and at work.
just in case following settings I have at home: router in mixed mode, 20/40MHz auto, WMM enabled
Download this and take a look which channel of your router had the best signal and make changes on your router to the best channel within 1-11. Try your speed test again to see if this helps.

  • Loss of download speed using airport extreme and express.

I have Wifi using an Airport extreme base station and an airport express extender.  However, the download speed drops from 21 Mbps to 8 Mbps. Any suggestions to boost the express other than an ethernet connection which would be difficult.

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and take speed measurement at that exact location.
Whatever that is.....likely in the 8-10 Mpbs range......is what the Express will try to "extend".
In other words, the Express can only extend the bandwidth or speed that it receives. It cannot make the connection that it receives go any faster. In that regard, the term "repeater" is probably a more accurate description of what the Express is trying to accomplish.
If you want the Express to extend faster speeds, then it must be located closer to the AirPort Extreme. In addition, anything that you can do to reduce any obstructions in the signal path between the AirPorts will help.
Ideally, you want a line-of-sight relationship between the AirPorts to help reduce the amount of speed loss that occurs with any wireless connection.

  • Upgraded from HH3 to HH5 and Speed Dropped Straigh...

    Hello All,
I did a very foolish thing earlier in the week. I ordered a Home Hub 5 to replace my Hub 3. I installed it today and immediately the download speed dropped from an average 71megs (+BT WiFi Allowance) to 61megs. I spoke to online support and they basically told me I was only guaranteed about 55meg. Now, I have been getting 71 for more than a year - completely constant. No problems, very little variation. BT Wholesale Speedtest shows my download speed has dropped to 61.00 and my profile is set to 62.28. The slowdown is quite noticable in use. I presume the changeover has caused my line to be re-profiled which, naively, I didn't expect to happen as I was only changing the hub. My hub stats are shown below. Any help would be most appreciated. I have to say though that I should have followed the expression 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' and left things well alone!
    Best wishes and kind regards,

I have an update........ after several calls to India I finally found a level 2 Tech that seemed to know what he was doing, very helpful well spoken guy called Sanjeev (pobably never get him again).
I told him that my HH5 drops out and is very unstable and I should get 75meg but was fluctuation between 6 and 32meg on wi fi.I told him I hve reverted back to my old Huib 3 and Router setrup and both him and an engineer that visited me said that ws a good move. He told me to do the following:
Go into the hub and change the channel to 11
turn all media off that was connecting to the wi fi, from mobiles to laptops and iPads and even the Youview box
unplug the Router then the HH3 and leave off
he then resent the line to clear as he said "static/cache on the line and anything holding memory"
a few minutes later he came back and said to start up the white Router untill the power and DSL lights were on and steady
turn the HH3 back on and wiait for the 3 blue lights
fire up my wireless laptop and go to Speedtest.net and check the speed and consistancey
The result.......... back up to 36meg wifi which is what it used to be in my conservatory and steady as a rock. I get steady 75meg wired and I expect about 50% loss for the distance away through wi fi.
I am now getting a £33 refund for my trouble and am now trying to arrange for the refund of my HH5 which I have told them is "Not fit for purpose" and asked for my contract to be reverted to before I upgraded.  Watch this spce for update

  • Where's the problem: Safari/Download Speed/ISP?

My connection speed has been shaped to 64kbps and something funny is now happening to my internet other than being slow. The thing is, I can handle the slow speed; what I can't handle is the download speed dropping to zero and staying there.
I have Menu Meters showing download speed in the Toolbar so that I can monitor what's happening. What I want to know is: why does connecting to a website be progressing well at 64 kbps, then drop to 0 after a minute or two? The internet connection itself is not lost. If I stop the download with the "X" in the address bar and the restart, the speed goes up to 64kbps again. I usually have several tabs open when I am in Safari so that I can jump between them when the speed is slow. But that doesn't work when the speed is zero.
I'm pretty confident that when I am unshaped at the start of the new billing cycle, and the speed goes back up to 3 Mbps, that things will return to normal.
Q1: Is this loss of connection caused by the slow speed? i.e. is the website saying to Safari: "Hey, the connection is too slow, I'm dropping you". A bit like an aircraft flying at too low a speed. It can't keep flying, it stalls.
Q2: Is this likely to be caused by time-out? i.e. the website saying "Hey, this is taking too long. Get lost!"
Q3: Is it a problem in Safari? I'll answer that one – not likely, because Google Chrome does the same thing.
As I said, slow I can handle. What I can't handle is nothing at all. Any suggestions as to the cause of this will be most appreciated. I am running Safari 5.1.4 under OSX 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
P.S. I just opened Activity Monitor and saw the Google Downloads is operational. Maybe that's hogging all the download speed. That leads to two more questions.
Q4. Is it possible to stop all internet traffic except via Safari?
Q5. How do I stop Google Downloads from downloading?

same problems on my systems still as well. none of the "fixes" work for me at all.
i've had to switch from safari(3.0.3) to firefox because of this.
i really would love to get back to using safari, since it's my browser of choice as well.
its going on over a month of this nonsense now.

  • Major download speed issues as of 2 days ago

As the subject line says, as of a couple days ago my download speed dropped to 40KB/s.  Before then, it was around 1MB/s.  Using speedtest, it said I had 26 ms ping, 1.2-ish mbps download, and 3.32 upload speed.  I'm 100% sure our internet plan does not consist of lower download than upload speed, so does anyone have any idea if there's anything I could do about this?  I mean, I can't even load a low quality youtube video while watching it at this speed, and that's just pathetic.

    ultraline series3 model 9100em
I seriously doubt it's the router though because if that was the case, my upload speed and ping would be bad as well.  Instead it's just my download speed.

  • Big speed drop!!

Hey, ive had BT Infinity for just over a month now, pay for upto 76mb, it started off fine, but the speed over the last 2/3 weeks it has intervals of serious drop in speed, these can last upto a day or 2! This happened again to me yesterday the download speed dropped during the evening and by the night it was below 1mb, during the next day it went up to 15mb but now again during the night its dropped below 1mb as the result below shows.
im quite experienced with Internet etc, so done all the basic tests etc restarted router, pc, disconnected all wireless devices but still having this problem?!
i also live within a stones throw of the exchange so that isnt the problem either!
If anyone else has this problem or know any solutions they will be much appreciated
    Thanks

As you can see on the stats you have posted, your IP profile is 70.37Mbps the data rate for your line is 72.59Mbps and your max data rate is 72.69Mbps with the noise margin at 6.5. This would indicate no problem with your actual connection.
Have you tried a speed test with your PC turned off/disconnected from the network. It could be something running on it that is slowing your network down.

  • WRT54G download speeds

I have a 10Mbs DSL service. When I connect my PC directly to the DSL modem (Speedstream 6520), I can get full 10Mbs download.
When I set my modem to bridging mode and set up my WRT54G (ver. 6) between the modem and the PC, my download speed drops back to around 600Kbs.
Any thoughts on why this is and what can be done to fix it? Any and all help appreciated.

Good call... the wired speed (through the Linksys) also checks out to be the full 7Mbs.
Any recommendations on how to start troubleshooting the Wireless connection?
    Here are my settings:

  • Massive speed drop during peak time!!

    Hi,
I recently switched over to BT broadband (3/11/2014) and unfortunately I have been having some major issues with download speeds during peak times. Off peak times I usually register download speeds of around 12-14Mbps, which is great, but during peak hours (11:00-14:00 and 18:00-22:00) my download speed drops to anywhere between 0.01-1.0Mbps, even on a wired connection. I fully expect speeds to drop during these hours (even though BT claimed on their website that they wouldn’t) but in no way should they even be this slow surely. The internet is completely unusable when the speeds drop as pages can take several minutes to load and I am currently paying for Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions that I simply can’t use because videos or streams will not load, they just constantly buffer!
I have been in contact with the online help chat with this issue and they simply recommended that I reset my router, and whilst this temporarily fixed the issue for a few hours, my problem soon returned. Since then I have not touched the router in over 10 days in the hope that the speeds would start to settle, and whilst off-peak times have improved, peak times are no better than before, and in some cases worse.
I have been patient and given the router and provider 3 weeks to settle down, but I am seeing absolutely no signs of improvement. As I said, I understand that speeds may drop during peak hours, but as it stands I’m basically losing my internet during this time. I’m starting to wonder what it is I’m paying for. I had no such trouble with my previous provider during peak hours, so I’m not sure why there is suddenly a problem.
I am using the Home Hub 4, and here are my ADSL Stats and my test results from Sunday evening (23/11/14):
    13:58:12, 23 Nov.  ( 81.290000) DSL noise margin: 5.60 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
    13:58:11, 23 Nov.  ( 80.240000) DSL line rate: 1152 Kbps upstream, 15576 Kbps downstream
    18:55:08, 23 Nov.  ( 81.160000) DSL noise margin: 6.50 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
    18:55:07, 23 Nov.  ( 80.100000) DSL line rate: 1104 Kbps upstream, 15288 Kbps downstream
After a network test on my xbox one (wired connection) I got the following:
    7.05pm
    Download speed: 0.34Mbps
    Upload speed: 0.88 Mbps
    7.20pm
    Download speed: 0.05Mbps
    Upload speed: 0.87 Mbps
    Speedtest result:
I have tried to get a result from the BT Speed checker, but my internet won’t even load it as of around 7-8pm
During the week I have been browsing the forums in an attempt to locate a possible solution and I came across this thread in which the original poster describes a problem very similar to mine. It seems that switching their line at the exchange to a less congested one seemed to alleviate the problem?
    https://community.bt.com/t5/ADSL-Copper-Broadband-Speed/Slow-Peak-time-broadband/m-p/1111272/highlig...
Anyway, hopefully someone can help address and solve these issues as I’m starting to get a bit frustrated and beginning to regret my decision to switch providers.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Ben

  • Airport express reduces download speed by over 50%, any ideas on how to improve

My ISP provides 15MBPS download speed, which when I hook my PC direct to the modem, I get about 14-15 MBPS download speed.  When I run the speed test again using the airport wireless network, the download speed drops to between 3-5MBPS.  Any ideas on what I could do to improve the speed with my wireless

I actually have two Airports, one  is located in our bedroom which is hooked to my modem and the other is an extention which is located in our family room.  The total distance between the modem and our family room is no more than about 60 feet and there are a couple of walls between the two.
If the main AirPort is located in the bedroom and family room is approximately 60 feet away...then the "extending" AirPort should be located at an approximate mid point between the two rooms.
The way that you have things configured now, the signal from the "main" AirPort must travel all the way to the family room. It has lost a great deal of strength and speed by that point.
The AirPort in the family room can only "extend" the speed that it receives. It can make the signal go further, but it cannot make the speed go faster. Think of it as a repeater, not a booster. As it stands now, you are receiving little to no benefit from the extending AirPort in the family room.
Experiment with the location of the extending AirPort at maybe 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from the bedroom to the family room. Minimize any obstructions in the signal path as much as possible. A typical sheetrock wall will absorb 10-15% of the signal (and speed), just to give you a quick example.
Get the AirPorts up as high as possible. They should not be down low on the wall or behind anything. They need a free look into the room.
There may likely be other things that we need to do to help things along, but locating the extending device correctly will be a start. Give that a try and report on your results.

  • WRT54GL Slowed Download Speeds (only 30Mbs down when old BEFSR41 got 50Mbs).

I just replaced my BEFSR41 with a new WRT54GL (to get WiFi support in addition to Wired Support). With the BEFSR41 I was getting 50/8 speeds. As soon as I swaped with the WRT54GL my download speed dropped to 30Mbs. Is the WRT54GL unable to get 50Mbs unlike the BEFSR41 or is there something I have miss configured? I am using the same computer settings as I used to and reconecting the BEFSR41 restored my 50Mbs Download Speed. This is with wired connections with the WiFi turned off (to eliminate any question of the WiFi stealing any of the processing power).

The BEF is a wired router which was designed for higher speeds than 50 Mbit/s.
The WRT54GLv1.1 can do 50 Mbps at most under ideal test circumstances. See here:
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/26843-linksyswrt54gv5reallyisalousyrouter?s...
Now, unfortunately real internet is not ideal, shows more packet delays, packet loss, and often ISPs use some round-robin or similar algorithm to their clients. Exaggerated example: your ISP sends you packets at 100 Mbit/s for 0.5s and then another 0.5s nothing. Makes 50 Mbps overall, if and only if your router is capable often dealing with 100 Mbit/s traffic.
If you use the WRT only as access point, i.e. you connect it LAN-LAN to your BEF you have to make sure to disable the DHCP server on the WRT. Otherwise the DHCP server on the WRT will assign incorrect default gateways to your clients.
Disable the DHCP server on the WRT if it's connected LAN-LAN (and disable RIP, too, otherwise you start again to route traffic through the WRT which you don't want to do)
