USB speed is limited to the speed of all the connected devices on the same bus. The bus is the portion of the computer's data traffic cop that connects several USB devices at once. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info to determine if there are any slower items connected to the same bus. Some USB ports may connect to a different bus under the USB section. If you want to see which bus a device has moved to after physically moving it, select Refresh from the View menu. Additionally some USB non-Apple devices may trip up if you put your machine to sleep either but closing the lid, or manually from the Apple menu, or automatically through the timer in the Energy Saver System Preferences. Some of these connection devices have latency issues. This means, they need a place to store their downloads before they come onto your computer. It may be their driver on the PC has settings to store something on the machine directly. Make sure your Mac isn't too full*:

  • Slow download speeds on Power Mac

I recently moved and have subscribed to Comcast for internet access. I have an Airport Extreme plugged directly into the Comcast cable modem and my Power Mac is plugged into the Extreme.
I can only get a download speed of 205 Kbps on the Power Mac. I can get 2000 Kbps on a laptop that is wirelessly connected to the Extreme.
I'm not sure what settings to check? Any ideas?

Hope you don't mind be adding to this but I have a similar problem. Tried the same solution i.e. installing a better cable, but have found that there is no difference to my up/download speeds.
Is there anything else you can think may be impeding my broadband speeds?
Any info would be most welcome.

  • What is the normal upload and download speed of a mac book pro?

im curious because my mac book pro has been quite slow and its not old or anything wrong with it.

There is really no "normal."  Uploads & downloads depends on your ISP.  Have you contacted them to see if the problem is on their end?

  • Download speed slow on Mac Pro but fast on MacBook Pro

I have an early 2008 8-core Mac pro, 6 GB RAM, running 10.6.8. I'm connected via ethernet to the HITRON CGN3 modem/WiFi router from Rogers. I'm only getting about 20Mbps download, and 10 Mbps upload. However, when I connect my 13" 2011 MacBook Pro (8 GB RAM) to the modem, also running 10.6.8 and using ethernet into the same port, I get about 80Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Even using WiFi, my MacBook Pro is able to get about 80Mbps download.
My network settings are the same in both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. I should be getting around 60-80Mbps download on my internet plan, but my Mac Pro is underperforming.
Anyone know the solution, or have experienced a similar issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Grant, you sir are a mega genius.
The culprit was the ethernet cable. I plugged the cable I was using for the Mac Pro into my MacBook and experienced a drop in download speed. Upon inspection, the cable had 6 wires. Who knew? This cable worked with my previous modem, and my speeds were pretty good. I just upgraded my internet package, and got this new modem, so I guess the cable is no longer incompatible.
Now that I've replaced the ethernet cable to my Mac Pro, my download speeds are smokin'.
Thanks, man, you saved the day!

  • Download Speeds slow on Mac, not on PC, Parallels or Bootcamp?

I recently switch from DSL to Cable because they offered higher speeds. I don't know if this affected DSL before because they only offered up to 2.5Mbps, the cable internet I'm on now is a 7Mbps/1Mbps line.
For the life of me, I cannot figure what is happening with my configurations. I have 2 PCs at home, a intel imac, and a macbook. When I run speedtests on dslreports or when I download large files from microsoft/apple, I get great speeds on my PCs. Around 880KB/s down. However, when I try to do the exact same thing on OSX, I get speeds around 260KB/s and it seems to be capped there.
The strange thing is that when I run parallels or boot camp, and try the exact downloads or speedtests I get the correct 7Mbps that I'm supposed to get. Am I doing something wrong with my configurations on OSX? It doesn't make sense that I can download in a window on OSX running paralles and get the fast speeds but thru OSX I cannot?
Both OS's are running Firefox. I've tried Safari and Camino on OSX and get the same results. I'm guessing its not a hardware problem because winxp on parallels and bootcamp get great speeds. This affects both my iMac and macbook. Any help would be appreciated

I have a 24megabit ADSL+2 connection and I had the same trouble as you.
When using Ubuntu or windows xp in parallels I had maximum uploads and downloads. But this was not the case in OSX.
My ftp uploads in osx were like 45k yet in ubuntu the were 120k to the same server.
I tried all sorts of methods to fix the problem.
But it turned out my problem was the router, I had a thompson/alcatel router a recent model.
I tried a cheap netgear adsl2+ router and bingo all my problems went away. I now have the same speeds in OSX and XP and Ubuntu.

  • My download speed in the Mac App store is horribly slow going at 600kb/s when my internet speed is 60Mb/s fibre optic broadband, why? Every other application has expected (fast) download speeds, so i doubt its my ISP or security settings.

As above, I have also tried clearing caches and changing settings in keychain. I can normally download a 5GB file in roughly 30 in any other application howver, in the App store it takes 4 hours. Very frustrating, any suggestions are very welcome.

Note: using enthernet or Wifi makes no difference in speed.

  • Mac App Store download speed very slow...

I have been trying to download the App Store updates OS X Update 10.10.3 and OS X Yosemite Recovery Update to my iMac for the past several days.  When opening the Mac App Store, I click on updates and they appear.  However, when I select 'download' my download speed slows to the point of less than 1 MB per minute.
I seem to remember this happening when Yosemite was first released, but after a few days, I had no problem downloading Yosemite from the App Store.
This only occurs when trying to download from the Mac App Store.  When I download iOS App updates to iTunes I do not have the same problem so it seems to be only affecting the Mac App Store.
My internet speed is fine.  I can download fine from other websites, just not the Mac App Store.
After searching online, I found one solution that looked promising:
Finder->Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access->Preferences->Certificates->Certificate Revocation List- Changed from Best attempt to OFF.
Unfortunately for me this had no effect so I changed the setting back.
I then looked for a way I could download the files from outside the Mac App Store & found this:
       Apple - Support - Downloads
When downloading from Apple Support downloads page, my downloads were very fast.  The Yosemite 2 GB Combo update took about 15 minutes, a far cry from the App Store which would have taken hours.
Is there some setting I need to change to increase the download speed from the Mac App Store or is it just overloaded servers?  Why then can I download the files from the support page and not run into the same slow speeds?  Updating iTunes was also giving me very slow download speeds, so again, I went to the Apple Support Downloads & clicked the link to download the latest version of iTunes.  The file downloaded in about a minute.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Apple servers are overloaded. Instead of using App Store, use safari to download the updates manually from apple websites.
    Here's a link for OS X 10.10.2 Combo Update.
OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update
I had the same issue and downloaded manually from this link. It took me about 30-40 minutes. I'm using a 5mb connection. Your 40mb connection should be faster.
As for the iOS updates, you will have to download them from your iOS devices, because there are no standalone updates for iOS. Alternatively after you update your Mac, use iTunes to download iOS updates by connecting your iOS devices with your Mac. That should be faster than downloading through your iOS devices.

  • Slow download speeds on macs v's windows

Hi, have newish MBP and iMac.  I also run several windows 7 based pc's.  Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly.  Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale.  I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Many thanks

Try turning off DNS pre-fetching. To do so enter this command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

  • Download speeds awful on 4mb line

Please can someone hear this out because it's driving me mad. I have two Macs, iMac G5 and iBook. I alos have a, dare I say it, a PC laptop. I am connected to the internet with Telewest Broadband (blueyonder) on a 4mb line. My download speeds on the Macs is around 90KB sec - yet on the PC I get around 400KB sec! I have tested this out by plugging each machine directly into the modem. Tech support at blueyonder is unhelpful and claims it's the mac's fault. Does anyone have any suggestions because I can't even stream the smallest quicktime movie trailer smoothly anymore. I have no other apps running when tested and even turned the firewall off. If one mac was slow then I would at least have something to go on but both are the same. I downloaded the same files from their download test site gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk as they instructed. But I was talking to a technician who asked what Firefox was when I told him one of the browsers I was trying. Incidentally the speeds were the same for Safari, Firefox and Camino. Please can someone suggest something... many thanks

Thanks for that link. And well well well, there was my new motorola listed as the one I shouldn't have. So anyway, I got on the phone to Telewest and they said - 'oh, you are the first person to say anything'. They have agreed to swap it with another model - so hopefully things will improve. Interesting though that they were not aware of any issues.
Thank you for a speedy response - faster than my download speed!

  • Airport download speed SLOW!

I am having what I have found to be a common issue (from searching Mac forums)with Airport speeds on my Mac Pro. I am getting very slow download speeds with on my Airport Express network, however my upload speed is normal. I have 2 Mac laptops on the network, both receiving 2.5 to 2.8 mbps download speeds while the Mac Pro, 3 feet from the Airport, downloads between 300 and 1000 kbps. All computers are configured the same, and everything is working fine on the network, including the 2 laptops and an Xbox 360. Only the Mac Pro is experiencing problems.
Upon first hooking up the computer, it worked fine, but later in the day developed a problem with connecting to the network. A clean re-install fixed the problem, however, after a week or so, I am having the speed issue. While I was once able to stream music and video and use wireless printing from the Mac Pro, it is now too slow.
Furthermore, when selecting the airport icon from the menu bar, the computer hangs for a couple of seconds before opening the menu. Is there a solution to this problem? I have been unable to find a solution on the internet, yet I have read of several similar and identical problems with Intel-Macs.

After a lengthy walk-through with an Apple Tech, we were able to fix the problem by power-cycling the Airport and Modem, erasing my network (in the Airport settings in Network Preferences) on the Mac Pro and re-adding it to the Preferred Networks, removing all cables from the Mac Pro, waiting 20 seconds, reattaching cables and then zapping the PRAM (apple, option, P, R) after the chime on start-up. Seems to be working fine now, hope it lasts!

  • Very poor download speeds on MBP Retina

I'm getting extremely slow download speeds on my Mac. It doesn't matter if I'm on WiFi or Ethernet, at home or at the office (both have very fast Internet), or what website I'm downloading from. I consistently get less than ~1Mb down.
    I have a 13" MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) w/ 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD.  Running 10.9.5.
Does anyone have any tips or things I can try? This is beyond frustrating!

  • Slow iMac download speeds

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to cable modem and an Airport Express that's configured to extend a wireless network. Download speeds on a Mac Pro and MacBook Pro are 20-30 Mbps. A 2007 iMac only gets download speeds of 1 Mbps. The iMac is next to a cordless phone base station; I tried unplugging that but it didn't make a difference.
I ran WiFi Diagnostics and here is the Diagnostic Report:

Wireless speed can be affected by ambient wireless signals on the same channel, lack of 100% support of standards (802.11n is a draft standard, thus third party routers are less likely to fully support it, and many use less channel hopping than Apple's Airport wireless). Apple's Airport Wireless is also shorter in wireless range than many third party routers, limiting its range to about 150 feet if nothing is in its way. Walls with pipes, metal file cabinets with papers inside can significantly reduce the range. Airport Express base stations are good repeaters that can be put at any wall outlet, with the Wireless Distributions System setup in the Airport setup (also known as WDS).

  • Are other people's sites suffering from slow  .Mac (IWeb) download speeds?

    Here is the site:
    http://web.mac.com/laneos/iWeb/The%20Triad%20Institute/Triad%20Home.html
Several people have remarked on the slow download speeds, especially the top links on pages other than the homepage.
Please send reactions/advice on how this can be remedied. Thanks!

I don't think .Mac is the problem. The problem is that Apple chose to use the PNG format for all graphics on your page, instead of the standard web graphic format: JPEG. This means that images, such as your rollover links in the top navigation (these are graphics, not text) are much, much larger than they need to be as far as file size. Anyone accessing your site on dialup or other narrowband connection is going to find your site takes a long, long time to load. Every graphic on your pages is being converted to PNG, which is an uncompressed format. There is NOTHING you can do about this at the moment, except Complain to Apple using this Feedback Form.
Don't just complain on this forum, because Apple doesn't officially monitor or respond to user's posts here. But they do promised to read the feedback you provide on the aforementioned form.
This issue of large files and slow download speeds caused me to totally abandon iWeb one week after I bought and started using it. My wife created a beautiful family site, but I pulled it down after testing on a dialup connection. It totally choked the browser--just on a simple home page. A friend waited 8 minutes for the home page to load, and then gave up. I'm just not prepared to anger my visitors to that extent.
