Download speed worse than halved

Up 'yill yesterday I had been getting a steady, but lowish 2900kbps thoughput on my Home Hub 2. It had been like this for many weeks.
Yesterday it reset itself and throughput is 1300kbps.
I will reset the unit, but why would it suddenly change? Water in the phone line pipes? (there ware some major down pours yesterday!!
Thanks in advance for any help

  • BB Connection speed worse than it was before repor...

    Hi
I am new to this forum but wonder if someone can help.
I had a speed of 1.2Meg and was supposed to get between 3.5-5.5 according to BT via a call center, BT wholesale website and through recent letter when I signed up to a new contract. I therefore queried this and after 1 hour on the phone with various checks and engineer was sent out and he managed to get my speed to 1.6 but said distance from exchange was the issue. A follow up call by BT said that I was being switched to ADSL2 line and after 10 days stabilisation my speed would jump to around 4meg.
The 10 day stabilisation period has ended and my speed is now 0.8 meg and the BT wholesale website for my number has been updated to state max speed of 3.5meg but I get nowhere near that and am actually worse off than I was before.
I do not know what to do now as I am in a worse position than I was and am dependant on a decent speed as I work from home.
Any thoughts on what to do and if there is someone to speak to in BT that deals specifically with BB issues would be appreciated.
    Many thanks
    M

I have done the quiet line test and I hear nothing.
I spoke to BT again yesterday and they said they would make some changes and within 24 hours my speed would increase but is has not.
Thanks for the hints and tips from Roger B – I have had this same BT line for past 6 years so no changes or additions at my end that could interfere with the speed - this is worst speed I have had. All I did recently was upgrade from option 2 to option 3 and that is when BT advised me on the phone and by letter that I should be getting 3.5  - 5.5 mbps. I was getting about 1.2 no problem and when engineer came out he managed to get it to sync at 1.8 but I was getting about 1.6 during tests and he  said that i would never get as high as the sync test.
Not sure what BT have done since the engineer came out but they did mention switching me to ADSL2 but I thought that would have had an increase – its frustrating as each time I speak to someone at BT I have to explain the whole issue again and they start with their script of questions that has all been tried and tested already.
If there is someone at BT who reviews this forum and can take this on it would help immensely.
Many thanks everyone for any help you can offer.

P.S. does anyone know what bandwidth/speed is needed to make telephone calls through the internet as that is what I am worried about.

  • Wireless Download Speed Less Than Half As Fast As My Upload Speeds

Is anyone else having this problem: I use Verizon Fios and currently have their 50/50 plan.  When I go to speedtest.net to check my speed I see that I'm only getting about 14 Mb download speeds but 42 Mb upload speeds.  I have checked my speeds on wired connection and get about 38-40Mb. My Specs:HP HPE-400yUsing the Ralink driver for Windows 7 (http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/pcimpcicbrt2860rt2760rt2890/)I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit)PC is not more than 25ft from the router, almost a direct line of sight Any advice or help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Your noise margin is on the high side and this will also affect your speed. you will need to have a stable connection for a further day ie 3 days in total before you can contact the mods.
Hi conrad  also  the line is very short  look at the attenuation figure as Keith has posted  the reduction in noise margin would achieve nothing on adlsmax  as the connection is already at its maximum but gives spare noise margin  when the op gets on to adsl2+

  • Download speed lower than Dial Up

I am stumped. I am getting download speeds of 40 kbs or less from a plan that is 3355/751. Im no dummy I should average somewhere in the high 270's to 300kbs. It takes me 20 minutes to watch a 5 minute video with all the buffering. If I upload something, I am averaging 80kbs which I can live with. I only upload a video or 2.
I phoned support and they told me my modem was going bad and should get another one, then try that. Did that, no change. Call support and they said everything is in order on their end. They have no issues with my line and everything is reading fine with all line tests. There is only 1 phone line in the whole house. DSL is on it since we have to telephone number just a dedicated dsl line.
I am using a Actiontec Modem Router Combination. I am hoping to resolve this issue soon I am tired of going through a dead end support team that walks me through the same steps every time.
    Thanks

I assume you get the 3355/751 from the transceiver statistics. If that is correct, the problem isn't in your link between the Modem/Router and Verizon. That leaves the router itself, and your PC.
Check the security settings on the router to make sure you aren't doing anything there that slows you down> In addition software firewalls on your PC, and Anti-Virus software can seriously degrade network performance.
You might also want to run the speedtest/connection analyses from Argonne National Labs, which will tell you what your connection is capable of, and where the delays are.

  • Hotspot download speeds less than 1 mbps on Tab and constantly disconnects

I'm using my Tab for the Hotspot feature to my Macbook and am constantly resetting. Speeds are ridiculously slow (had to reset twice to write this post!) Is there a programming fix for this or an update or SOMETHING?? I love my Tab, but replaced my USB Broadband connect and am regretting it!

  • Fault repaired, Speed more than halved !!

    Hi all,
I've had a line fault which took out phone and infinity, prior to fault has wired speeds of 34/37 down and 5.5/5.9 up, I'm on infinity one so was pleased with it. Fault been repaired and speeds now down to 13 down and 3 up, how can i get this reset so i have my speeds back. Bt estimate for my line is 30 - 42 down which i was within. I have been getting 34/37 down for over 2 years do i just have to sit back and wait for the dslam to sort itself out which could take weeks/months or can the Mods get anything sorted for me please.
I haven't got much faith in it sorting itself out.

You could always try and complain to BT and ask for it to be reset but usually Openreach will not do anything until DLM has had a chance to do it's job. I would give it upto three weeks from when the fault was fixed and if it's not back to where it should be either post back or complain to BT.

  • Terrible download speed with Infinity 2 (less than...

I was a relatively early adopter of BT infinity.  When I first signup I recieved a consistent 70mbps+ down 80mbps up.
Over the last few months this has dropped to around 40mbps down and 12mbps up.
I posted here regarding the issue, contacted BT, and even Emailed the tech support guys recommended here on this very forum.
Unfortunately nothing improved, however since 40mbps down was okay for almost everything I needed to do I decided to leave it.
Now however, the situation has become dire.  For the last month my download speed has been consistently less than 4mbps with my upload speed being 2-3x as fast!
The BT speedtester refuses to complete due to the test taking too long. However I have managed to get a screenshot from speedtest.net.
To make matters worse, webpages down't always seem to complete, with many requests eventually timing out.
I am at a complete loss and would like some advice on where to go from here.  I have for all intents and purposes lost faith in the standard BT customer service having spent hours on the phone with them before when my speed dropped to 40mbps a few months ago.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi
I also am having the exact same issue. I am on the phone now and they are telling me now that is all my line can handle.
This is disgusting, the service is disgusting, cannot get an engineer out. For over 10 months i could get 60mbps steady downloads now i can't
    even stream a youtube video!!
even though i have another infinity 2 line in the downstairs living room getting 65mbps steady downloads from the same exchange.

  • More Than One Computer Trying to Access Web = Very Slow Download Speeds?

We have Verizon DSL with a basic Westell modem, which supposedly is only a modem with no router capabilities. We have an Airport Extreme Snow Base Station that acts as a WDS Main, with one other AEB Snow as a WDS Remote. All computers have unique ip addresses in the 10.0.1.X range as provided by the WDS Main's DHCP.
When only one computer connects to the internet to download web pages, software updates, etc., there seems to be no problem at all. When I do a speed check I get results that seem to be in the correct range, and it doesn't matter which computer I use for the test.
However, if we try to access the internet with more than one computer at the same time, everything slows to a crawl. Such as, if one computer is downloading software updates, the other CPUs have super slow web page downloads, slow to the point of connection time-outs at times. Or if two of the computers are simply trying to download web pages at the same time, one or the other has super slow downloads.
I feel like there is some kind of routing problem with the Base Station but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.
What could the problem be? Where could it originate, and what, if any, advice could someone give me to help trace the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

... the one computer I am looking at right now shows DNS servers as 10.0.1.1, which is the internal ip address of the AEB. Could this be part of the problem?
That is normal and shouldn't cause a problem. Essentially it tells the computer to ask the snow AirPort base station (ABS) for DNS information. The ABS will then provide the DNS information which it currently received from the ISP.
Would it help if I manually entered the DNS numbers that appear on the AEB on each machine's Network Preferences?
Probably not. A busy DNS server or faulty DNS info won't affect download speeds. That only affects browsing since that requires the computer to convert human readable addresses to numbers that the computer can use.
Remember that the snow ABS only operates at 802.11b (11 Mbps) speeds. Then when you use WDS it cuts your available wireless bandwidth in half.

  • Download speeds halved

I'm hoping to get some help with an issue iv'e been having with my download speeds as of late. On June 23 my modem went out for about 30 minutes and when it returned online my download speeds have been cut in half. I subscribe to the blast service and was getting about 125 MBs down on average. Now my speed is capped out at 59 MBs and it wont go passed that. I've spoken to tech support on several different occasions and every solution that was offered yielded no results. I'm using a Motorola surfboard sb 6183 and the only difference I noticed is that i'm now getting all 16 downstream channels as oppose to the 8 I was getting when the service was first initiated. I've tried using other modems to no avail as well as having a tech come out and found nothing wrong. If anyone could shed some light on this or look into why i'm experiencing this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to know what's going on as well, this is first night taking forever to watch a show on Netflix, decrease in speed been happening past month, I understand bandwidth, had 4gb bandwidth in Alaska which is faster than xfinity this past month, maybe they need top add more cable boxes or something, Something has to be done we not only ones in twin cities to complain

  • 8x slower download speed than Windows laptop on cable

I have cable internet (in Luxembourg). The provider uses Scientific Atlanta EPC2100R2 modems. Download speed is around 1 Mbps, rather than the 8 Mbps advertised. When technicians come to investigate, the connection is 8 Mbps on their Windows laptop. They claim to have several clients on Macs, and none have the problem.
My modems also get fried very often. The provider had to replace my modem twice in four months.
The problem persisted after I replaced my iMac. It may be a software issue, though, as I migrated my old Mac to the new one.
My Mac works fine with ADSL. I haven't tried it with other cable providers.
What can I do? I tried creating new locations in Network preferences, to no avail. Always the same result.

wireless is unreliable for the speedtest as it varies depending on home conditions so only way accpeted is by cable.  if that also shows a problem then you can take it from there

  • Opening second tab, no address causes download speed to drop from 160 kbs to less than 5 kbs and sits there doing nothing, does not happen with IE, why is this

after firefox updated from 27 to 28, when i download a file, play music, watch a video, or run a speed test, normal speed is about 160 kb/s (dsl connection 1.3 Mb/s) - just opening another blank tab (not any address) or try to open another page like google search page, download speed drops to less than 5 kb/s - downloading stops, and second page does not open, why is this happening, it does not happen with internet explorer and the version of IE i have is out of date,
history/cookies all clear automatically when close, i have disabled all add on, run malware, adware searches - show no problem, norton antivirus is up to date, i have spent hours on phone with ATT isp and connection is showing no problem - if i run a speed test it shows good, if i try to run a speed test and open second tab - speed fails and speed test will not even finish, ATT suggested I try the same thing in IE and there is no problem - so it appears to be an issue with Firefox 28

What is the CPU load when this slowdown happens?
Are you using a specific driver in Windows to mange the internet connection that might not get enough processor time to run properly?
It is also possible that other (security) isn't able to do its work and takes additional CPU time.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem if starting Firefox in Safe Mode didn't help.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Wireless Download speed much slower than it should be

Wireless Download speed on Belkin N300 is only 1.5 mps and hard wired speed is 50 mps.  Firmware is up to date, what else can I do??  What is the Wireless Router that Comcast recomends??

A Verizon Tech support employee helped solve the issue. Apparrently we still had the same plan when we started and were only getting 768 kbps download and were paying like $21 dollar for it. So we are going to upgrade and get the starter plan and pay $20 a month and get 1 MB download. I might even get the 3 MB download plan.

  • IPad 2 / Apple TV slower download speed than laptop?

My Apple TV (gen 2) and iPad 2 both have issues with download speeds.  Netflix has pretty much become useless on my Apple TV due to the slow download speeds.  I'm currently using CableOne for my internet provider and I consistently get ~ 20-25Mbps download speeds on my laptop, but only around 0.75Mbps on the iPad 2.
I use a Linksys WRT64G router and currently have it set to use wireless "G" only, QoS and WMM disabled, WPA Personal Security with AES encryption and the wireless set to channel 1.  All these settings were based off other user's findings that have had the same issues and yet I'm still having problems.
Both the iPad and the router have been rebooted without improvements.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Very slow download speed with Airport Express

    Hi.
I've recently experienced painfully slow downlink (download) speed using Airport Express.
    My WiFi configuration:
    - main router: WRT54G connected to my provider (speed limit: 4Mbit up/down link),
    - AirPort Express with WiFi N and Airtunes hooked up to stereo in living room,
    - AirPort Express WiFi G and Airtunes connected to stereo on bedroom.
Second Airport is currently not used to simplify tests and description of my problem.
The problem: when connecting from MacBook to Airport Express I can't reach more than approx. 512kbit downloading from internet, usually even 300kbit, while uplink reaches easily 2.5Mbit (limited probably by my network provider). While connected to WRT54G I can get 2.5 up to 4Mbit downlink, same when using cable directly plugged in to WRT54G.
I tried changing channels, switching different options in Airport with no effect - still getting pathetic download speeds. Even worse - browsing experience is awful, with frequent slowdowns, etc.
I tried different encryption methods, and seems like only switching it off at all (unprotected network) seems to let my Airport work on full speed (2.5Mbits symmetrically up/down, up to 4Mbits - provider speed limit) - which is unacceptable, I refuse to set up and use unprotected network at home.
Problem is clearly in Airport or in interaction between Airport and Macbook. I've just ran out of ideas - can you help me?

I can't offer any help with your problem except for the fact that mine has recently done the exact same thing. It's ridiculous, for months and months it was extremely fast and then all of a sudden it takes 20 minutes to open a simple browser page. Something is definitely wrong with the airport because all other wireless internet connections from other routers are as usual. \

  • What has happened to download speed for any video....tv, movies

Since about 2 days ago, the download speed for purchased video has become ridiculous. A 30 minute tv show takes MORE than 30 minutes to download......it used to take about 3 minutes...or less. I rented TRON yesterday and it took over 3 hours to download......it used to take 10-15 minutes. This happens on both my 2 Macs and 1 Windows machines. My Internet connections report a solid 20MB down and 1.5 up.....on every machine and device I have. It is NOT a problem in my home system or machines. All other downloads are fine.
Something is seriously wrong with Apple's iTunes websites. I am certain that there is nothing wrong locally......no machines have changed.....and they all experience this abysmally slow service.
Netflix streams full HD fine on all machines, by the way. I wouldn't even begin to download an HD movie from iTunes until someone at Apple figures out why their service suddenly is not useable.

My box has similar issues with Multiplex D (which Film 4 and 4 Music are on).  My TV is absolutely fine but my Vision box is less happy.  I have the channels listed but no picture.  I keep meaning to replace my aerial leads but haven't got round to it.  Strange thing though is that my aerial goes to my vision box which then goes to my TV so it makes no sense as I would expect the reception to be the same or worse on the TV as with the Vison box.
