Download speeds limited to 8-9mbps for FIOS 35 service?

I've *NEVER* had a problem with verizon fios download speeds until last night (7/11) and today.  I've always been able to achieve the d/l speeds of whatever my service is.  When I had 50mbps service, I'd get 50mbps download.  Now I only have 35mbps service and I've always got 35mbps service *until yesterday.   Now my download speeds through various services and bandwidth tests seem to be capped at 8-9mbps.  Is anyone else seeing this sudden drop and cap in download speed??  I'm located in Atco in South Jersey.

Ok on the 35 mb/s standard in your location.
I doubt Verizon is deliberately capping you.
Are you using a few different servers at www.speedtest.net to test your speed?
Do you have more than one device (Mac or PC) you run the tests with and get the same results?
If the answer is yes to both of those troubleshooting questions, I'd suggest you call Verizon tech support and ask for help with the problem.  It could be local to your ONT or something else at their end than needs looking into and correcting.
Good luck.

  • 2009 Macbook issue: download speed limitation

    Hi
Mi wife got a late 2009 white macbook that's driving me crazy. Despite we got a 7Mbit ADSL connection and all others macs at home (we got 2 more 2008 macbooks and a 2008 macbook pro) with the very same OS version (10.6.4) and network settings are working properly and downloading at full speed, her one looks to have some kind of speed limitation in download to around 1.5 Mbps.
The ping and upload speeds are the very same of other computers, and apparently randomly the download speed also on that computer gets back to around 7 Mbps...
I just spent the afternoon doing tests and I got nowhere but maybe I found a pattern...
    First what I excluded:
-doesn't depend on how it's hooked to the net, same behavior by ethernet or wifi in both cases the other service was off
-any other mac using the same connection is working properly, did side by side tests
-ping is always the same on both computers used for test
-it is not a DNS issue
-deleted and created a new position in Network panel
    -did several restarts, no solution
-doesn't depend on a specific app being used (but maybe apps can matter, see below)
-none of possible fixes I found online did work
-probably it isn't related to OS version or updates, this issue has likely been there since a lot of time, and over more os updates (not really sure of this, we had unrelated netwok issues and changed provider for that reason in last year, we cot a stable and uniform environment just recently)
    Now what I noticed:
-As soon as the computer is started and I open a single browser (be it Safari, Chrome or Firefox doesn't change) speedtest.net test is ok, 7Mbps download.
-work and navigate with it, it's ok, download speed remains 7Mbps
-As soon another internet using application is opened (Mail, another browser) the connection speed drops to 1.5 Mbps (this is ALWAYS the limit, no relevant fluctuation in this)
-If I close any of above apps and remain with a single browser, running tests initially report still the 1.5 limit, but shortly after (one or two minutes) the speed gets back to 7Mbps
My wife needs to work with Mail, Skype, and at least two browsers open, so this limit is giving her great troubles

This doesn't really help narrow down the problem
    {quote}
doh, you are right... sorry... the possible fixes I had found around are the ones reported right before...
Create a new user account on the problem computer and see if the slow speeds and strange behaviour persists in it.
    I did, it does...
    - created a new user and logged in
    - opened Safari, speedtest returns 7Mbit/s in download
    - opened Firefox, after a little speed drops to 1.4
    - some successive test starts slow (1.4) then sometimes speeds up, but most remain at 1.4
    - start chrome too, same behaviour
    - close Safari and Firefox, wait a little (1 or 2 minutes) do the test with Chrome, back to 7Mbit/s
Then go through stuff like this http://www.gballard.net/macrant/osx_troubleshooting.html.
I went through it and did most of what's suggested there (it's a little complex because when I am not working my wife is usually using her macbook to study and needs to use it all the time)...
    - unused disk space is 95,6 GB
    - booted in single user mode and did a fsck -fy
    - repaired permissions
Nothing changed, both the behavior takes place in new user account, and in main one, where any internet using application (Mail, Skype...) opened together causes the download slow down...

  • Download speed at 125k or below for the last 2 wee...

We've been having a fair amount of grief over the last couple of weeks. We usually have a download speed of 2mb with some periods where it drops down to near-dial-up speeds. If these don't clear automatically I will force a disconnect, reboot and reconnect and hope that over a few days the exchange picks up the better connection speed.
However, about 2 weeks ago the broadband completely lost connection for about 22 hours. My wife works from home so we needed it up, even at dial-up speeds so that she could use email. I contacted the call centre in India (who weren't much use) who said they couldn't find anything wrong with the line and suggested I call the UK tecchies. Funnily enough, I had just called them up when I noticed that the broadband was back on. An amazing coincidence...
Anyway, I then did the usual - wait a day or so to see if it improves, re-set the connection so that my ADSL settings show a Downstream connection of 2000+ kbps and then wait some more for the exchange to catch up and bump my profile up to its maximum. That bump-up hasn't happened and today the connection is dropping out again, pushing my downstream connection down to 600 kbps. But for all this time we've been stuck at between 100-125k actual download speed.
I've got files I need to download, my wife has work to do from her laptop and I have 2 kids with homework projects to research. 100k is painfully slow, especially when more and more websites have flashy ads that probably load instantly on high-speed connections but take up to ten seconds for us. Why are downstream connections at exchanges allowed to fall to 100-125k, particularly when it will take DAYS to bump up (if you're lucky)? Having a minimum speed of 500k would at least allow you to work with the internet.
And why won't my connection automatically increase at the moment? If it's to do with flaky line connection, why has it deteriorated?  I had an engineer out about a year ago to find out why my connection was poor at that time and it turns out there was a bit of internal wiring that was causing the blockage - the connection to my house was a reasonably strong 2mb. I haven't touched my internal wiring since we sorted it out, but every now and then the BT Broadband connection just nosedives.
Current connection status (was 2400k, dropped to 1300k, dropped to 608k just as I was accessing the forums):
    Line state Connected
    Connection time 0 days, 00:28:48
    Downstream 608 Kbps
    Upstream 448 Kbps
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation G.992.1 Annex A
    Latency type Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 25.9 dB / 21.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 56.2 dB / 31.5 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 1.1 dBm / 1.5 dBm
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
    FEC Errors (Down/Up) 6 / 4
    CRC Errors (Down/Up) 84 / 34
    HEC Errors (Down/Up) 71 / 43
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote) 6 / 4
But my actual download/upload speeds are 125 kbps & 345 kbps (using Broadband Speed Checker rather than the BT version cos its a lot quicker when download speeds are this poor).
I live in a village a few km from the Stubton exchange in Lincs so don't expect a brilliant connection, but this is getting pretty frustrating. If any of the mods can have a look at what may be happening on the exchange (and possibly fix it) I'd be very appreciative!
    Cheers
    Nick

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers
    Nick

  • Download Speeds poor in my area for the last few days

I live in the Baltimore area and my download speeds have been under 2MBps since last thursday.  I've been testing them out regularly at www.speedtest.net as I've been timing out from the normal internet applications I use.  My upload speeds are still testing at 20MBps + but the download speeds haven't reached 2MBps and are often under 1MBps.  I tried calling the support number, and they said there wasn't any local issue.  I've tried all of the standard nonsense of turning everything off, rebooting, running anti-virus spyware but to no avail.  I'm pretty sure there is a local issue and they just didn't have the expertise or desire to look in to it.

My speed test from Montgomery County, MD to Comcast in Baltimore. Do you have another PC you could use to run a second test? Are you running this test over wireless? If so, try a hardwired connection and report back. If running on wireless, you may wish to log into your router and try a different wireless channel.

  • Newbie with question about the $400 Deposit for FIOS TV Service

Okay, i was real happy when i found Fios is finally available in my area after years of waiting.  I call to order and theysay i need to post a 400 dollar deposit for fios tv.  I ask why and they say combination of poor credit and also the fact that the TV equipment as in the DVR boxes are very expensive and they just want security.  Its fullt refundable after 1 year.  However, to my suprise i was approved for FIOS Internet And Phone Service or Double freedom plan 20/5 internet and Freedom Phone plan both for $64 Dollars monthly 2 year guarantee.  Also get the 100 dollars cash back in for of the debit card.  My problem is that i dont need any verizon equipment for the Televisions as all my tvs in the home have tivo.  All i need is the cablecard decoder which i am sure are considerably less expensive than the Home media dvr or regular dvr.  Is there a way to get around this or am i stuck without fios tv until i put up the 400 dollars?  Is there a higher power i can appeal to??

Thanks for the many previous replies.....  I solved my problem by calling verizon and using my wifes maiden name.  Now i will have all 3 fios services with no $400 dollar deposit.

  • Loss in Potential Download Speed

Hi, I used to have an average download speed of 2.x Mbps going towards 3 Mbps, and continuing on months later I am now at an average speed of 1.2 - 1.4 Mbps. I don't need to follow any diagnostics advised by Sky as the same setup has been used since installation i.e. microfilters etc. I am mainly curious if anything can be improved with this as my friend experienced the same problem where they had a download speed of around 4 Mbps for a number of months, coming to a point where the speed had eventually dropped to around 0.5 Mbps, and this was not due to any faults in the line, they had phoned Sky multiple times and it eventually led to their download speed being improved again and resulted in around 8 Mbps. I'm wondering if I could receive any help to possibly improve the download speed to its original amount as it makes a pleasant difference compared to my current speed when on YouTube, Facebook, and downloading files. If my statistics also seem different than normal then I would like to request a 'reprofile' of my line (if possible). Thank you.

Hello, GREAT, Thank-you for updating your post. I've just looked over the images : Your below your speeds this marked as fault. Could please ask you go to your master BT socket and take image of it and send us what it looks like ? Then could please un-do the screws on both sides and you will see socket behind the face plate please plus your phone & adsl cable in to the microfilter, Then send us update screen shot of the same images. Then could you please change your microfilter if you have spare one re-upload  images again. Please could use this site and send us speedtest http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ Please repeat on link 2 : http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html : please share  Thank - You! Im sorry lot of things need to do but i want make sure nothing in the household causing before tell you next step. Thank - You  Please don't for get like the posts.

  • HSI Enhanced - Slow download speeds

My download speed has been running slow for at least 1.5 weeks.  My service is HSI enhanced. I was to receive download speeds up to 3.0 Mbps, and  upload speeds of 768Kbps.  When I first received the service my download speeds were 2+Mbps.  Now my download speeds range from 0.45 Mbps to 0.86 Mbps.  The upload speeds have been consistenly ranging from 0.69 to 0.73 Mbps.  The speeds were tested using a Mac, PC (Windows 7), iPad, and an Android device.  I still get the same poor results for download speeds.  While in RI I was able to get upload speeds of 2+Mbps using another network.  Since then I have tried two different Verizon wireless routers supplied by Verizon and still get the same poor results for download speeds.  The technician indicated the speed capability tested ok at the router.  However, I am now at a lost after all these years.  I have always liked the quality of Verizon products.  In spite of the different challenges I have had with services in the past, I am at a point where I have to decide whether to find another supplier as I am unable to perform my daily responsibilities.  My setup is very basic - phone jack to router, router to computer.  There is no filter on the connection between the phone jack and router.
Has anyone had a similar problem that was resolved?  If so, what was the resolution?

You wouldnt believe how long ive been dealing with this EXACT same issues. Almost a year now with no results. The thing with my problem is, I get fantastic speed during the early morning hours  4-5 am while i getting ready for work, but when i get home 6-7-8pm I get the .53-.79 speeds. No one seems to be able to do anything about it. Im on chat  now with them....same results. Im sure a tier 2 tech will call me, Ill miss their call and that will be the end of it! (Sorry i ranted, all done now.)

  • Slow 3G Download Speed

I've been having slow download speeds on my Iphone 3G for the 3G connection. I've had the phone for about 2 months and its been perfect until the speeds shot down in last two weeks. I did a scan on testmyiphone.com on my 3G download stream and it ended up being 0.11 MBPS. I did the same scan at the same location with my mates iphone and he had 1.5MBPS so it can't be location. I've tried reseting the network settings and restoring the phone but nothing has solved the issue. Anyone got any ideas what it might be?

  • Experiencing Extremely Slow Upload / Download Speeds AGAIN - Bradenton, FL

Experiencing very slow internet speeds for the last few days in Bradenton, FL area (4 Mbps / 4 Mbps). The exact same issue occurred approximately 2 months ago and took over two weeks to resolve. Turns out it was an area wide equipment problem that Verizon wouldn't address until they received a sufficient number of customer complaints. Very frustrating. Paying for sub-standard service. Looking to switch to Brighthouse in the New Year as this appears to be a never ending problem.

Here we are, 9 months later and I am AGAIN experiencing slow internet speeds. I am paying for fios speeds of up to 50/35 but am seeing 5/15 instead. This problem keeps recurring time and time again. Tech support refuses to do anything because I can get normal speeds to my nearest hub, but ANY hub beyond that is useless. When I do speed tests using other methods, I show slow speeds. I was on the phone with tech support for 2 hours only to be told that all the network technicians and gone home.
This problem crops up every so often. Tech support will not address the issue until a sufficient number of customers call in to complain. Each time the problem is finally solved weeks later and was due to some sort of equipment failure on Verizon's end.
Speedtest.net testing out of Ft. Myers is giving me 5.84 Mbps down and 14.87 Mbps up.
Speakeasy.net testing out of Atlanta is giving me 11.45 Mbps down and 23.54 Mbps up.
In the past I my router has been replaced and I have been told that the problem is with all of my computers. Hmmmm... I pay over $200 per month for fios service which includes tv and digital phone. I recently renewed my contract for 2 years thinking that this problem would not come back but it has for the THIRD time in one year. I have a 30 day money back guarantee with no penalty if I cancel my contract. At this point, I am so frustrated that I will be calling Verizon to cancel my service effective the end of the month.

I’m in Queens N.Y. area, The way I see it Verizon Fios has OVER PROVISIONED, OVER SOLD their own network and switches are overloaded with bandwidth that can't handle. So they throttle down everyone’s speed, on the local Central office hub. As the hour of the day 7PM the speed is being gradually being slowed down to about 7Mbps for me.
As the hour approaches I have been running tests between a few servers transferring large files for a few hours, my results were: as the hour approaches the speed gradually decreases until it’s caped at 7Mbps. but the upload speeds are unaffected. It’s like Fios provisioned download speed is exhausted. PC directly connected with a CAT6 1Gigabit LAN cable to ONT. So the bottle neck is the central office

Do you ever visit a friend or realtive with a Mac who has faster internet? Maybe the local library has Macs on a fast line. If so, get a USB thumb drive and put this link on it from your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then put this link on the drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
When you are at some place that has a Mac with a decent download speed. insert the thumb drive in that Mac and click on the first link ("DL1399") and direct the download to your thumb drive. Now do the same this with the second link.
The installer files will now be on the thumb drive and, when you get home, drag them from the thumb drive to your desktop. Install the Combo update first.

  • Why is the download speed for Creative Cloud updates and initial software installation so slow?

Why is the download process for Adobe Creative Cloud updates and initial installations so slow? I can download and update other software from other providers almost an order of magnitude faster. This slow download problem has been present since I started using Creative Cloud soon after it was initially offered.
Adobe customer support maintains that there is no throttling at Adobe's end, and that no one has complained about this problem -- this forum shows the latter not to be true.
    What is the problem?

    Hi ErstwhileCreative,
I don't think I've ever checked the download speed but the installers are definitely large files, many several GB. It might seem longer because the download immediately progresses into the installation at 50%
