Download speeds suddenly dropped

Over the past year and a half i havent had any problems with my service up until 2 days ago. Our download speeds went from 350KB to 28kb - 50kb... (we have the 3Mbps plan) the modem is set to bridge and connected to a linksys router. I've tried power cycling the modem and router without any luck. I've also tried resetting the modem back to the default settings and plugging the modem directly to 3 different pcs with the same results
Modem: Westell 6100F

#1 Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
#2  Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
#3 If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.

  • Broadband download speed has dropped from ~2.7Mbps...

    Hello,
For the last few weeks our broadband download speed has dropped from ~2.7Mbps (which we've been getting consistently for years) down to 0.7Mbs. It's now so low that our download speed is slower than our upload speed. I've take the following steps and nothing has worked:
Running the BT Broadband Speed Checker
Removing all equipment so its just the BT Home Hub connected through a BT Microfilter straight into the master socket
Replacing the modem cable and Microfilter
    Online line fault check
As I say, it only recently - over the last few weeks - that our speed has decreased so massively from what we've been getting for years and it is extremely frustratingly slow - I can get faster speeds via my mobile phone's 3G network.
Here's a screenshot of the ADSL line status from the BT Home Hub.

when you joined BT broadband you would have received an email address *****@btinternet.com or  ******@btopenworld.com   Bt would normally send the emails to that address

  • Broadband speed suddenly dropped

For the last 7 months we have had good BB speeds of  around 6Mbps this has suddenly dropped down to under 0.5Mbps.
I have reset the Home Hub 2 & had it plugged directly into the test socket on the master unit which has not changed anything.
I ran the BT Speedtest which gave the following:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 414 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :5824 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
I did notice the blue "b" led flashing yellow a lot last eve, far as I know this means the Hub  is updating itself
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Welcome to the forums
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
your ip profile is low this is due to disconnections and providing you can maintain a stable connection with no hub restarts for the next 3/5 days your profile should increase automatically this will then improve your download speed
Then someone here may be able to help and offer more advice.

  • Opening second tab, no address causes download speed to drop from 160 kbs to less than 5 kbs and sits there doing nothing, does not happen with IE, why is this

after firefox updated from 27 to 28, when i download a file, play music, watch a video, or run a speed test, normal speed is about 160 kb/s (dsl connection 1.3 Mb/s) - just opening another blank tab (not any address) or try to open another page like google search page, download speed drops to less than 5 kb/s - downloading stops, and second page does not open, why is this happening, it does not happen with internet explorer and the version of IE i have is out of date,
history/cookies all clear automatically when close, i have disabled all add on, run malware, adware searches - show no problem, norton antivirus is up to date, i have spent hours on phone with ATT isp and connection is showing no problem - if i run a speed test it shows good, if i try to run a speed test and open second tab - speed fails and speed test will not even finish, ATT suggested I try the same thing in IE and there is no problem - so it appears to be an issue with Firefox 28

What is the CPU load when this slowdown happens?
Are you using a specific driver in Windows to mange the internet connection that might not get enough processor time to run properly?
It is also possible that other (security) isn't able to do its work and takes additional CPU time.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem if starting Firefox in Safe Mode didn't help.
    See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Internet Speed sudden drops (need to reboot) - "FBI" name in WIFI names - Allowed?

Question 1: Why do messages asking for help and complaining about Verizon slow speed do not allow a "REPLY" . Verizon filters them?   I see the messages but thee is no Reply button.
Question 2: in the last two months my internet speed has been dropping regularly (suddenly, Pings go from 100 msec to 999 msec) and requires a reboot of my Box. This is in the Edison (NJ) area. Anybody else in Edison seeing this?
Question 3: I didn't notice any new neighbor moving in but in the last few weeks there is a new WIFI that shows-up in my area called "FBI_investig_1".   Anybody knows if people are allowed to use such FBI name for their WIFI, just curious...  Or is this genuine when FBI has a local investigation? (not very undercover...)

To answer your questions, once the ticket has been referred to a Verizon agent you can't reply to the meassage. As to why your pings times are bad it could be almost anything. You will need a Verizon agent to determine that. Lastly someone just changed their SSID to be a wiseguy. The FBI is not going to tell you that there is an investigation going on in your area.

  • Is it normal for your download speeds to drop as l...

I'm getting a range of speeds atm as I'm coming up to my first week. Since Friday it's ranged from 8mbps to 37mbps. Is it normal for it to go as low as 8mbps? Also, my ping has ranged from 18ms to 44ms. Is this also normal?

Thanks for the info, btw.. I had a powercut in my area earlier today, so my internet was down for about 2 hours. Now it's back on, does the 10 day period restart? As I remember the engineer telling me that I shouldn't turn the hub/router off during the next 10 days, but obviously this was out of my control.

  • Broadband download speed has dropped to 2Mbps

    Hi
I believe I am having exactly the same issue and am being told to do lots of tests / switch off hub etc. Running BT's own test I appear to be getting 8mb from the exchange but only 2mb from my hub (consistantly).
I'm new to this forum so can you tell me who I can email to try to resolve this as per this thread?
    Thanks for any help

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Suddenly reduced BB download speed - again!

Many months ago, I suffered a drastic reduction in BB speed.  Please can you help?  According to BT website, I should get BB download speed of 12.0 to 14.5 Mb/s but since September this has been around 9 Mb/s.  On 19 December 2012, the speed suddenly dropped to 6655/828 and here is my current data from the Hub 2.0:

As you can see, the noise ratio which is usually in the 14-15 dB area has jumped to over 20 dB!
Please don't tell me that this is due to the Hub being reset too often.  Only time I switched off the Hub was to move it to the BT box in the hallway.  It resets itself frequently enough with no help from me.  Today it has reset itself three times in 8 minutes during the past hour!!
I have moved my Hub from upstairs at the end of a 15-metre extension to the BT box in our hallway where it enters the house.  No improvement whatever.  I have an I-Plate fitted.
I connected my laptop to the Hub by ethernet and got the results:
Max possible speed 7.15Mb/s; actual speed 5.87 Mb/s download.  Sorry I can't show the image but the desktop I am using is connected by wireless and the BT Speedtester doesn't want me to connect wirelessly - why not?
Can someone please reset the noise margin to something like the 6.0 dB that is the BT standard as that will undoubtedly speed up my connection?  And should I just dump the Hub 2.0 and buy a router which delivers?  And when will this lonely bit of Birmingham be getting Infinity?  Every other exchange around me has Infinity buty good old Acocks Green still operates steam-powered Broadband!!
    Help, please!

  • Very slow download speed though modem line rate no...

    Hi
I recently noticed (today, 31st December) that our download speed had dropped very low, to approx 0.5Mbps. The upload speed is normal, approx 1Mbps. The modem line rate is however normal (8Mbps dowm, 1Mbps up). I have checked the download speed using http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/. I am at postcode SK237FN and have had consistently reliable download speeds for several years, 5-7Mbps.
    Please help!
I already tried rebooting my router but this has not improved matters.
    Thanks...

  • [SOLVED] Download speed is slow while playing certain Steam games

This is a weird one: When playing Steam games my download speed (everywhere) drops to a fraction of what it should be (roughly 1/10th). My upload speed is unaffected.
I don't know how long this has been the case but I think it's fairly recent since when playing games I often tab out and do stuff on the net. I would've noticed.
This doesn't happen with Portal 2, Civ V, Guacamelee or Xcom but does happen with Rochard, Steamworks Dig, Gateways (2d puzzle platformer) and Awesomenauts. I was looking for a pattern but I fail to see one.
To be clear about the problem: If I start one of those games and tab out my download speed is 1/10th what it should be. If I exit the game my download speed returns to normal instantly.
I've checked for obvious stuff like Steam downloading in the background (it's not and nor is anything else - no unusual network activity at all). I've checked for mere coincidence - signal dropping/interference and so on and that seems not to be it either. It's also far too consistent and, as I say, upload is unaffected for some reason.
I don't even know what info to give with this one or how to begin tracking it down so any advice will be received gratefully.
I'm running Arch 64bit, all up to date.
    05:03.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g
Which I believe is using the rt61pci module.

Ok, well, I *think* I've sort of solved it:
I went through various wifi channels and found that the degree to which my download speed was reduced varied depending on the wifi channel I was on. So I left a game running and watched the download speed and the speed of my CPU and GPU as they clocked up/down and it seems that one of them is managing to interfere with the wifi signal. Or at least that's my best guess. High wifi channel numbers seem to be affected least (significantly so) so ... yeah.
I don't know if this makes sense technically (and no idea how I've never encountered it before) but... that's my guess.

  • Very slow speeds suddenly

I have the 3mbps plan, and since about a week ago the download speed has dropped to around .25-.35 mbps consistantly.  Upload seems normal.  Very late at night around 2 AM the speed seems to bump back up, but only around .7 to 1 mbps.  I've disabled wireless on my router and that does not make a difference.  My router is the Westell 327w.
This is not the first time I've had speed issues, and it's starting to get tiresome.  The last time there were horribly poor speeds for about a week and then the entire area had an outage for a day, then it came back up and everything was fine and speeds were back to normal.  Obviously was an issue on Verizon's end.  I suspect this is the same, but of course customer service doesn't want to entertain that possibility.  I'm about on the end of my rope and ready to find a new ISP if this isn't resolved quickly.

It would be that big box. You can technically mess with the Coax, Ethernet and Telephone connections within the ONT, as those are considered customer servicable. What you should never, ever touch would be the Fiber line. Disconnecting that or damaging that can really cause some issues. Fiber is both a pain to clean and splice properly if something happens to the clean connection.
Your BBU should be located inside if the ONT is outdoors, as the BBUs are not weatherproofed like the ONTs are. You should be able to shut it down and power it up without heading outside. The only reason you'd need to go outside is to check on the ONT's status lights to see if it has power and if the network connection is there, which we're saving for other troubleshooting steps for other times.

  • I've extended my Time Capsule wifi via Airport Express and the download speed is still super slow

I get an average of 80Mbps download speed when close to the Time Capsule. When I got upstairs in the house the download speed drastically drops. So I decided to extend the wifi range using an Airport Express. See image below. I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?

I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?
Well, the first rule that you need to remember is that when you "extend" using wireless.....you will have a drop in the potential speed on the network. So, while you might have more "range" for the network, the network speed will drop. Nothing that you can really do about that other than connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection. There will be no speed loss over the Ethernet cable, so the Express should deliver approximately the same speed as the Time Capsule.
The next rule is that when a device "extends" using wireless, it can only extend the quality and speed of the signal that it receives. A speed "boost" will not appear.
Try locating the Express about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage.  Anything that you can do to minimize obstructions between the Time Capsule and Express and on to the other area will help.....but you will never get close to the performance of connecting the AirPorts using an wired Ethernet cable.
Unfortunately, Apple really doesn't tell you very clearly, if at all,  about important things like the two rules above.
