Download Stack = unreadable

In the last couple of days, the Downloads stack has become unreadable. If I click on it, only the drop-shadows of the items in there shows up.
Help?

The first thing to do is actually locate your downloads folder and find out what's in it here: /Users/Downloads.
Once you've located it try taking everything out of the folder and then replacing them 1 by 1.
If that doesn't work you may have to pull the finder Prefs.

I accidentally deleted the download stack, but managed to get it back. How can I change back to stack view?

Right-click on the folder icon on the dock where you put it. Change it from 'Display As: Folder' to 'Display As: Stack'.
After that you'll be all set.

  • I lost my Download Stacks option. Now it is just a Download folder. Need to find out how to get the Download Stacks option back. Previous answers to this question don't make any sense to me. Please help in explicit detail. PS I'm using Mountain Lion.

Need to know how to get it back to its original Download Stack. Previous answers to this questionin Apple Support just don't make any sense to me. I'd appreciate explicit directions on how to restore this feature. Currently it's just a Download folder... must have accidently poofed it away.
    Help!

And if what WZZZ suggests doesn't work (and hopefully it will) move the file name below to the desktop, log out or restart and the Dock preferences with its defaults should be recreated. You'll need to re-configure it as you like it:
    com.apple.dock.plist
It's located: in Finder hold the Alt/Option key and from the Go menu select Library>Preferences.
If it fixes things, delete the file on your desktop.

  • What can I do to get Downloads Stacks back?

I searched Stars & Stripes archives that downloaded every paper I searched, computer started running VERY slow, so I moved the downloads to trash & "emptied".  Somehow, the "download" file or folder itself got into the trash... now I don't have my download stacks, just a file icon with a "?" symbol... so I removed that from dock as it just isn't there anymore.  Would like to get my download stack back???  I have a stock 13" pro that I got in Sept., it says "early 2011", Lion 10.7.2  Not real happy with my abilities on this puppy, it replaces an old tiger desktop, but I don't seem to have much luck with the finger pad thingy and it seems to do a lot of stuff I'm not wanting it to do, or realizing is being done... New 'puter doesn't come with any reinstall disks like old one did, so have I lost permanently my "Downloads" file/folder/stack... or is there some way I can get that back?  Thanks

Do you have a picture of a disc drive (metal box looking item that may say Macintosh HD) on your desktop in the upper right corner?
If so, double click it and you should get a screen similar to mine as posted below.
Double click on the Users folder (the one with the silouhette on it).
You should now see something similar to this screen (the house should be back!)
Double click on the house and look for the Downloads folder (circle with the arrow and Mac on it).
Let me know if you have made it this far.
Note: To make a screenshot you should use the Apple tools. Press Shift-Command-3 and then look for a file named Screenshot (date) at (time). Use the Apple Camera button and choose the first option. It will ask you where the file is on your computer. Select it and it should upload without the ?

After updating to OS X Mountain Lion, there is a password locked pdf document in the Downloads Stack. Does anyone know what password is required to access this file?

Hello, if your install disk is locked (I assume with FileVault) there is no way to change the password. If it weren't locked there were at least two solutions. As far as I know, the only solutions now are:
    - contact your dad
    - erase and reinstall the OS X clean
    Let us know.

  • Into my download stack which appears to be a Facebook login page to someone who is not me but has my e/mail as the primary account, should I be concerned?

I have clicked on a link received in my e/mai which has put a download  into my download stack which appears to be a Facebook login page to someone who is not me but has my e/mail as the primary account, should I be concerned?

I would do the following just to be safe.
Change your email password so anyone trying to use your email address won't be able to or delete that email address from where ever you got it after getting a new one.
    I would trash the download.

  • Finder opens items from download stack in the background

    Hi,
I download all my files to the standard download folder in the home directory. The problem is the following: If the application, which is currently active is NOT finder and I click on the download stack in the dock, select an item which will typically be handled by the finder (DMGs, Zips etc.), the finder window opens BEHIND the current active application. Normally I would expect that finder window would go into the foreground since I decided to access an item handled by the finder. It does not matter what application is in the foreground (Safari, Mail etc, all the same outcome).
BUT: When the file I choose which is not handled by the finder, I get the behaviour I expected from the start. For Example: I have Safari active, open the download folder from the dock and click on, lets say, a pdf-file. The Preview application handling that file will open in the foreground and become the active application. Just the way I want it.
I am pretty sure that this problem is not related to my setup. I could reproduce the problem on my Mac Mini and on 2 Macs in my company (all running Snow Leopard 6.2).

For what it's worth, it seems like I've got the same issue with a bunch of Epson folders. This has come after using the install disc for an Epson printer - now, when I turn on the computer, there are 4-5 other Finder windows open, each pointing to one of the Epson applications. Like you, I can't find these in my Startup Items list.
I just started looking around for solutions - will let you know if I find anything.
Or did you find a solution? (At the moment somehow deleting plists seems like the right idea, but I want to find out more before I do that.)

  • Icons disappear in Download stack fan

When I fan out my downloads stack, the icons and file names do not appear. They appear in grid, but not fan. I have repaired permissions, restarted computer, but nothing works. How do I fix it?

This happened to my father who just got a new iMac after seeing how great my MBP was. Thanks for the hint with p-ram... (Does anyone know what that is?) It worked but it happened for a second time (Also happened with other stacks I had made for iWorks and MS Office). My dad got frustrated with it also the mouse stopped working and was stuck on the screen. (a simple unplug and plug back in worked fine) Needless to say he wasn't very impressed with Apple. Can anyone enlighten us to this issue?
On a plus side he likes taking some photos and is very impressed with the screen!!

  • Only Download New Unread Pop3 Email?

One of my email accounts is a yahoo hosted pop3 account. In the past I have left all my email on the server (7k + messages). When I access this account on my iphone it is downloading old email that has already been read in my email client on my computer.
    1) Is there a way to force the iphone to only download new unread emails in this pop3 account (similar to turning recent off in gmail)?
    2) Is there a way to tell the iphone that the 7000 messages have already been viewed and I don't need to download them and to only download email from today forward?
Ideally, what I would like it for my computer email client to continue to receive my hosted pop3 email regardless of whether or not it has been read as it does today. But, I would like my iphone to only download new messages that haven't been downloaded by another pop3 client.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • HT5161 How do I reinstall the downloads (stack) folder?

I inadvertently trashed by download stacks folder (OS10.8.2). How do I reinstall the folder and place it on the dock?

And if you mean you deleted the Downloads folder from your Home directory, just create a new folder, title it "Downloads", and set that folder as the default location for Safari and any other web browser etc. for downloads.
    Regards.

  • Can someone please upload the original downloads stack .doc file that comes default with a clean install?

Can someone please upload the Downloads Stack.doc file to somewhere for me to download? The document detailing how the downloads stack works. I deleted it by accident hoping to free up space but figured out that the dowloads stack now looks horrible without it. So, can someone please upload it? Thanks. The document with the green down arrow that comes with your mac when you clean install the OS. I don't exactly want to clean install Mountain Lion just for the document so... yeah.

It is not a doc file, but a pdf.
Here it is for you. I'll leave it up for 24 hours, or until you indicate you have it (whichever comes first).

  • Firefox Download Stack

    Hi Guys,
When I download from Firefox to my desktop, the files don't automatically go in my downloads stack. Is there a way to configure this?
    Cheers
    A

I might have figured something out that could be useful to people trying to solve this problem... though at the moment it doesn't seem that it's going to be useful to me...
If you have Firefox set to open any files automatically, it will autmomatically save them to the Desktop. I figured this out when I changed the way Firefox handled .mpgs from "open with..." to "save to disk" and it finally saved .mpgs into my selected download folder. You can change it by going to the Preferences>Content then down to File Types and hit the Manage button.
Now if I could just get it to save to a folder AND open upon download...

  • My download stack is gone

I must have done something to it.
I may have inadvertently deleted it or it changed somehow.
New to Macs and playing with all the new features.
My downloads are now appearing on my desktop.
I would like to know how to restore the download stack.
I have not been able to find any info on this.
Also I have installed Firefox and was asked where to put my downloads.
I believe I indicated my desktop. Not sure if that's why they are all going on my desktop.
If you need more information ask and I will reply as best I can.

click on the home button in sidebar and select the Downloads folder. that's the actual folder where downloads should go. the stack on the dock is just a shortcut to it. drag the folder to the dock to get your downloads stack back. set firefox to download to the downloads folder instead of the desktop.
