Downloaded Artwork

What's the difference between downloaded artwork and artwork, that I put with the album myself? If I save my songs to an external harddrive will the artwork be saved with it or do I have to save it seperately.
I hope somebody can help me - Thanks.

Downloaded artwork is not embedded inside the ID3 tag in the file itself. In other words, if you move the file to some other hard drive or another computer, the artwork will NOT go with it. I think Apple did this to save hard disk space. The artwork from the iTunes Store is typically around 500 KB. There is only one copy of downloaded artwork for each album that has it.
If you put the artwork in the album yourself, the artwork is embedded in the ID3 tag -- at least for supported file types. As far as I know, these are AAC and MP3 files only -- but there may be more. Embedded artwork takes up more space on the hard drive, but is more portable to other media players.
If you don't mind taking up more room on your hard drive (i.e. you'd rather have portable artwork), I have a program that will embed downloaded artwork into the ID3 tag.

  • Downloading artwork - "could not get artwork for some albums"

This might have been addressed before, but I browsed the forum and couldn't find a thread. Sorry if it's been gone over several times.
I live in Turkey and I've added albums to my iTunes. I checked the box in the Get Info next to Artwork and I selected Get Album Artwork from the Advanced tab. It scans through all the albums and then says "could not get artwork for some albums." "Some" albums means all of them actually. And the error tab details say "artwork not available." I also tried getting artwork by right clicking on a single album but I get the same error. Before it was a 609 error. Now it just says not available.
I logged out of the store, quit iTunes, loaded it again, re-signed in to the store and tried to get artwork that way, but got the same result. No artwork. The albums are things like Let It Be, Allman Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald... Albums that should certainly have artwork available.
    I'm using Windows Vista.
Has anyone had and conquered this problem? Any ideas on what I should do? I have 300+ albums, so getting the cover art from wikipedia would be a bit tedious. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give!

    Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are your songs from Audio CDs or iTunes Store? If not you may need to manually find the album artwork for them as these songs may not be listed in the iTunes Store database for your region.

iTunes will only download album artwork for songs that it can find in the iTunes Store. iTunes will check each song in your iTunes library and attempt to match it up with a song in the iTunes Store. If the data matches, iTunes will download the album artwork from the iTunes Store and add it to the song in your iTunes library. If iTunes does not find a particular song's artwork in the iTunes Store, you will not see an alert message. iTunes simply does not download artwork for that song.

Hi- apparently I also had a similar moment of madness and thought that 'freeride games' would be fun. Well, so much for that! It added a ton of things to my tool bar, I would like to uninstall it, any suggestions for this one?
    thanks :)

  • Embedding downloaded artwork into files

Is there an easy way to embed downloaded artwork into files? I have transferred some files to my PS3, but since iTunes doesn't embed the artwork it downloads to the files, only the ones I've manually added show artwork, which are very few. Is there a way that iTunes or another program for the Mac can take those artwork files and actually embed the images into the song files? I only need to do this with MP3s. Thanks

OK, I figured out how. I used one of Doug's AppleScripts, called Embed Artwork.

  • Error when trying to download artwork

I have successfully downloaded all kinds of album artwork until yesterday and now it says unknown error 609 and does not pull the album artwork in. Does anyone know what the deal is?
    thanks

I wish I could say the same. "Get Album Artwork" so far has been useless. Of the 465 albums (original, purchased, nothing pirate) I have on my iPod, Apple can only find 7 album covers. Of those, 3 are wrong. The vast majority of the albums I have imported were recognized by CDDB Gracenote, so album and track names were entered "correctly".
I cleared all previous artwork I had entered manually to try this new feature (don't worry, I saved all bmp on a folder in case this didn't work). I was hoping that saving a single image per album would allow me to get more room since 6000 songs with each ID3 tag storing an image averaging 250K was costing 1.5Gb!
As examples, I have a huge collection of broadway musicals:
-Aida is considered by CDDB Gracenote as "Aida" when I import the CD. iTunes store has the same album as "Aida (Original Broadway Cast Recording)". Anyway, I've tried changing the album names, artist, year, to match exactly what was on the iTunes store song info, but no artwork is ever found.
-Cats never downloads any artwork either.
-Titanic, downloads the artwork for Cats!! (go figure, the name of the album is Titanic: A New Musical". How the **** does it associate it with Cats?
-The Man of LaMancha downloads artwork for a musical I had never heard before: Carnival!!!
-One classical CD with only orchestral music by Mahler downloads artwork for another album with a Mexican tenor singing arias by Mozart!!! What?
This software by Apple is complete screwed up!! I hope they issue a new release soon where the user can enter this single artwork per album without having to go fetch on whatever flawed database they're using now.

  • Itunes error when attempting to download artwork

    Hi
everytime I try to download artwork for my music collection I
get "cannot download song title etc unknown error occured (-609)".
Anybody else have this problem and know how to fix it?
The function was working fine until I formatted my computer
    thanks

why? because itunes artwork never downloaded for me, and this works.
    how?
1 - go onto amazon (or google images, whatever floats your boat) and search for the album
    2 - save the artwork
3 - locate the artwork in my documents
4 - highlight the enitre album in itunes --> get info
5 - drag the located artwork from my documents into the "artwork" box in the itunes get info screen.

  • Trouble Downloading Artwork

I used to have an App for my iphone called 'Halo 3 Virtual Coach' but I have deleted the app, but it updated a bit ago on my computer, and for some reason the artwork is missing for the app.
Now every time I turn itunes on it tries to update the app and comes up with an error saying there was a problem trying to download the artwork for it and this error comes up every time I try to download app updates.
Is there anyway I can completely remove this app from my computer so that it doesn't try to update and stops annoying me.
    Cheers,
    Tom

  • Cannot download artwork anymore?

    Hi,
All of a sudden, I can't download artwork for albums? I have a valid iTunes Store account, but it just flashes up quickly but never downloads. I tested it on an album I KNOW worked before (I removed downloaded artwork) and tried to get album artwork (highlighted the album - right click get album artwork) but nothing
Also, I seriously don't remember ever having a Audible.com account - but in my advanced it gives an option to Deauthorise Audible Account?? What the?
    I have iTunes 8.0.1 (11) for Mac.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Thanks, but the issue is more to do with why it won't download via iTunes like it used to do? And how to deauthorize an Audible account that I'm pretty sure I never had! Cheers.

  • Auto download artwork?

Does anyone know of a program that will auto download artwork for a song/album by either selecting the album or something and attach the artwork to the file?
Currently I am using Linspire's Lsongs in a virtual pc session on my PC to try to go through my library and download artwork. In Lsongs you can select a song or group of songs from the same album and there is a button that will attempt to download the artwork for that album from Amazon. It works very well but using Lsongs witha big song library stinks big time. I was wondering if someone else had a good program they were using to download artwork. Need a program for either windows or osx as I could run it from my ibook but I would like the program to attach the artwork to the song file like however lsongs is doing it cause I don't want a bunch of images files in the music library folders.

    Tag&Rename. http://www.softpointer.com
Use the Amazon.com lookup function, and tell it to save the album art in the file tag. Perfectly iTunes compatible.

  • Itunes 12 can't download artwork

Started a new library of wav albums. I can't get the artwork to download. I can go to get info, artwork and bring it to here, but when I save it, it doesn't show up.

These instructions will have to be modified if you've moved the iTunes folder from its usual location.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Cache
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with a subfolder named "Cache" selected. Quit iTunes if it's running. Move the selected folder to the Trash. Relaunch the application and re-download all album artwork.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Sound distortion after downloading artworks

I am using the latest version of itunes 7.0.1.8
It has seemed ok, until yesterday i decided to click on get album artwork.
The artwork was downloaded fine but the noice quality immediately after and since has been awful. I can only describe it as an interferance / distortion. It is a constant sound regardless of teh beat / tone of teh music. When i use any other program to run sounds or music (windows media, audacity, windows sounds) it works fine UNLESS itunes is running. If itunes is running all noise on teh machine is unbearable.
As soon as i exit itunes, all sound is good again.
When i first upgraded to itumes 7 i had some sound qulaity issues , thyat were resolved by the latest upgrade, but this is an altogether different and more prevalent sound.

Goto the PC makers site and update your sound card/drivers
In Windows goto Control panel>Quicktime>Audio tab check "Safemode" hit OK and reboot the PC for settings to take
If that doesn't work try the steps here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610

  • Re-download artwork for purchased songs

I noticed that iTunes 7 hasn't actually transferred artwork out of the song tags of previously purchased songs so I thought I'd delete the artwork and use the Get Album Artwork feature. I wanted it to be more efficient and use the new method of storing one cover per album instead one inside every track. It doesn't work even though the songs are clearly in the store, so I had to copy the artwork back in manually. I only tried it on a couple of songs so no harm done.
There seems to be a block on using the service to download covers for iTunes purchased tracks. Is this correct?

There seems to be a block on using the service to download covers for iTunes purchased tracks. Is this correct?
    No, not in my experience.
This is what I did with an album I purchased over a year ago:
Select all tracks of the album.
    Get Info
    Check 'Artwork'
    Click OK
All artwork will be removed from the tracks (I did save a copy in case it didn't work or the album was not available anymore)
Still, with all tracks selected, Get Album Artwork.
Presto. 1 picture (.itc file)appearing in the Download folder.
Selecting only one track will also get the artwork.
The new file which appeared in the Download folder was detected by GraphicConverter as having a jpeg datastream. After decoding it showed the correct picture.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downloaded artwork file sizes - can be HUGE!

    Just so you know....
Artwork files downloaded from the Apple site can be HUGE. For example, artwork for "Travis - The Invisible Band" is a JPEG of 1.35 megabytes despite being only a 600x600 pixel image. It's hard to discover just how big these files are - most people won't relaise! They are hidden in Music:iTunes:Artwork in a cryptically named set of folders. I got Disk Inventory X to help find the bigger ones, then used it's reveal in Finder option to view them by dragging onto Graphic Converter's icon.
Having lots of artwork of this size really chews into your hard disk. The average size seems to be around 400k. 4,000 mp3's might mean 1,000 images or about half a gig of disk space. These files will be attached to your mp3 files reducing available space on your iPod by about 10% for 128M mp3's.
The same 1.3M image file can be reduced to 160k in Graphic Converter at the same pixel size without meaningful visual degradation, and to only 40k at 300x300 pixels. An iPod that might lose up to 10% of its capacity with large artwork files would see almost no loss of capacity with more compact artwork.
I've figured out an applescript that will reduce the image file size to whatever I want (using Graphic Converter). It puts a smaller version as a jpg on the desktop. Unfortunately applescript can't insert jpg files into iTunes, it's only permitted to add them after conversion to PICT files. Who knows why! PICT files are much larger than jpg files, so I can't make the script nearly as useful as it should be - annoying indeed. If it was not for this, a script that automatically went through iTunes and shrunk large artwork would definitely be feasible.
Even more surprising, I found that if you drag a jpg image direct from Safari into iTunes, it does not go in as a jpg! Apple change it to a high-quality PNG in transit, and the file size goes up by a factor of 5 to 6 if the original jpg was well-compressed to start with. The only way to ensure that the original (compact) jpg file gets into iTunes is to drag it from Safari to the desktop, and then manually drag that jpg into iTunes.
Apple should perhaps have paid a little more attention to file size issues with artwork. Before providing such huge artwork files for download they might have provided options for size (300x300 vs 600x600) and quality (medium vs high). Also they should leave dragged jpg's alone.
This has spoiled my iTunes 7 experience somewhat. Otherwise it's great.
    Chris.

while Coverflow may be a delightful treat for the eyes,
i've contested since day-one that the artwork bloats
the song files to an unacceptable size... for me, anyway.
many months ago, i decided to endure the task of
deleting the song art from ALL my song files, and to
my absolute surprise, i got back hundreds of MBs
of space on my hard drive.
so now, obviously, whenever i purchase any new music,
the first thing i do after up/downloading is delete
the song art. it's all pretty, but i didn't buy an iPod to
    look at the song art.
    my two cents! cheers!

  • Why won't downloaded artwork transfer to iPod?

    Hi all!
I am having a problem where artwork that I downloaded through iTunes is not transferring to my 80GB iPod. This applies only to artwork that I have downloaded from iTunes. Artwork that I have manually put in transfers and displays just fine. The artwork is showing up in iTunes and when I transfer it to iPod, the artwork is gone. I've already done the basic stuff ('display album art' is checked, the artwork shows up in iTunes when I look at the song info, but not on the iPod), so has anybody else had this problem and solved it? I'm thinking its some lame copyright restriction thing, but I haven't found anything official from Apple pertaining to this.
    Notebook   Windows XP Pro

Hmmm. . . does that include artwork that you downloaded using iTunes for songs that you did not buy on iTunes? That is my specific issue. Songs that I bought on iTunes transfer with the artwork just fine. Its songs that I ripped from a CD that I later added the artwork to using iTunes' 'Download Album Art' feature that I have a problem with. I guess I should have been more clear.

  • ITunes fails to download artwork for each and every album!

    Hi!
The Get Artwork feature seems to totally fail. Right clicking an album, then Get Artwork, gives error: "Artwork for [band name] - [album] could not be found".
This happens for every album I have, even though all my MP3s are correctly tagged with the Artist name and album.
    Any suggestions?

Do you get an error message when you try to download iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)
