Downloaded DivX codec, now can't play MJPG

Hi,
I've raised this with the DivX folks, but I wanted to see if it's a known issue. I downloaded the latest DivX community codec (6.6.0) and I can play .AVI DivX movies fine now, but when I try to load up some of my old movies taken with an old digital camera, Quicktime Player refuses to start up. (The older movies are MJPG format with araw audio stream.) Removing DivX Decoder.component from /Library/Quicktime allows me to open and play my old movies with no problme.
Are there known problems with this codec, or a workaround other than removing the codec when I don't need it? Is it a problem with Quicktime Player or the codec? I'm on a G5 iMac with OS X 10.3.9.
Thanks,
Montreal

You seem to have answered your own question.
Third party software added to QuickTime can cause issues.
And AVI should have died 8 years ago. Those that use that container are only doing so because it really doesn't have any "standards".

I downloaded songs that now will not play completely on my touch.  There were no error messages, and I see them fine on my touch.  They get to a certain point in the song and jump to the next song.

Do they play ok on your computer's iTunes ? If they do then try deleting them from your iPod and then re-sync them back to it.
If they also don't play on your computer's iTunes, then depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting the incomplete tracks from your iTunes library and redownload them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if they re-download in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find those songs and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

Downloaded much and now can not see how to fix it?

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

    As to iWork:
Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first. Nothing will import AppleWorks databases: the only way to deal with them is to export them to ASCII text (of course you need AW running to be able to do this) and open them in a database program - the best choices are Bento for very simple databases or FileMaker Pro - please see these pages:

    Hi Tgordineer,
This sounds like a known issue reported here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=713014
There was a workaround posted, but I've not tested it myself. Here are the steps.
    # Go into Yahoo Messenger Options - Change the Window in the dropdown to Tab and press OK.
    # Then go back and switch it to small window and press OK.
Once the bug is officially resolved, you could try running a Nightly or Aurora build to use the fix early.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • HT203175 I don't know whether these articles apply or not.  Here's what I seeing in my iTunes program.  When I open iTunes, I see little exclamation points next to EVERY song that has been downloaded.  Therefore, I can't play them from my computer or dwnl

Can somebody help me get rid of these exclamation points so that I can download all my songs to my iPod?  Please?  I don't know why they appeared, as I did have the songs working before and they were on my iPod.  But, I didn't want ALL of them on there and I didn't know I could "select" which songs to send to the iPod.  However, it's been a few months since I messed with it.  But, yesterday, when I went to select my songs, I noticed all these excalamation points on everything that was there.  Help, please!  Again, I can't play them from my computer AND they won't download to my iPod!
    Thanks,

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • I paid for and downloaded an album but can't play one song

Hi everybody, this is the first time I downloaded and purchased an album from iTunes. Note: I purchased and downloaded on my iPhone
I just purchased and downloaded Outasight's "Nights Like These" album. However, for some reason, the third track ("I'll Drink to That") didn't fully download and process. When I go to my music library on my iPhone, "I'll Drink to That" shows up but I can't play the track. Whenever I try to play it, the album just skips to the next track.
I went to iTunes on my phone to try to download it again but "I'll Drink to That" shows up as $1.29 when I specifically paid for the entire album. In fact, the song even shows up in my PURCHASED panel but it just won't play. iTunes wants to charge me again.
    How do I fix this?
    P.S.
the album won't show up as a purchased album on my iTunes on my computer because I downloaded from my phone. How do I fix this? I am afraid if I sync my phone to my iTunes on my computer, I will lose what I have paid for.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP if u do reply

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try deleting the problematic file (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iTunes store.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option which is revealed in the iTunes app on your iOS device by tapping the more button at the bottom of the screen.
If the problem re-occurs, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.

  • I emptied trash with itunes in it accidentally and now can't play any songs on itunes what can i do?

so i needed to clear disk space so i could use imovie more, so i put a load of stuff in trash and emptied it, but somehow i stupidly put itunes there too, so now when on itunes i can't play any songs because it keeps asking me to "Locate" it, which i can't do because it doesn't exist anymore arrrggh! i can't use any of my songs on imovie either, it's very frustrating. If there is any way at all that i could recover the songs so i could play them on itunes then that would be great-
    thanks,

    Hi,
If you don't have a back up, you have lost your music.
If you have iTunes Store purchases, you can go into iTunes Store and redownload previous purchases.

  • Downloaded Yosemite and now can't open photoshop on Mac Book Pro?

I have downloaded Yosemite on MacBook Pro and now can't open photoshop.
I have updated Java but still no help.
Anyone know anything about this please?

If you updated the OS after Photoshop 5.x was installed, the nefarious Yosemite disjointed beast damaged your Photoshop installation.  Thank Apple for that.
You need to UNinstall Photoshop again, look for, download and run the Adobe CS Cleaner Tool, Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility, install Photoshop from scratch again, apply any and all available Photoshop updates, and ONCE AGAIN Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility—in that precise order.

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.)

  • Changed e-mail associated and now can't play anything

I recently changed my e-mail from a very old hotmail account to a gmail account. I did this through my iTunes account management. After changing my e-mail I can not play anything that was purchased before. This has affected many season passes and music that I have downloaded and need to know if there is a way to fix this. I tried to de-authorize and then re-authorize my computer, but that didn't work. Changing the e-mail back to my old one also did not work. Anyone have any ideas, or did I just lose out on a lot of money? I would assume that it is my apple ID, not my e-mail that the purchases would go by. When I look in my account history it still shows all of my purchases. Thanks!

I took the drastic step of reformatting the drive. You need a day to do it for back up of all your files, planning how to reload the software, and of course an operating system disk. Luckily I had that as the recovery disks didn't work. You also need to know where to get the drives when the recovery disks don't work and the sony download taxi did the trick.

  • Transferred songs and now can't play songs

I just transferred some purchased songs from my computer onto my son's computer using my iPod. His computer and mine are both authorized to play the songs. I can play the songs on his computer in iTunes, but can't play anything (including songs I imported from CDs) on my computer! When I click on a song to play it, it lists at the top of iTunes, but won't play!
    Any ideas?

Just realized that something was wrong the sound on my system, not iTunes!
