Downloaded files aren't on my computer (searched everywhere)

Hi,
I am having trouble with some PDF files I downloaded.
Completely downloaded about 12 files I needed, but from the download viewer I only moved the 4 I needed to work with into a folder. I figured the rest were stored in some temporary folder and would later be accessible.
However, they are nowhere on my computer.
Interestingly, I don't have this problem with recent image and font files I downloaded.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
- Aaron

Its good to have both, a time machine backup, AND a second cloned HD.
If your HD ever dies on you, you can in a matter of 20 mins, install the old HD and be up and running again quickly.
Its extremely important to have MULTIPLE backups, so many people have been so upset at losing massive amounts of data, because they "had a backup HD" for their data, but when that died etc, its gone.
1 backup is never enough, and the data on your computer "doesnt count" as a backup.

Files I had downloaded from iTunes on my old computer only partly play on my new computer. I have authourised the new computer and checked my user name has remained the same.

Are you not able to uncheck the item in your iTunes sync settings so as to remove it from the phone and then resync it again.

  • If I back up on my external hard drive and then delete files on my computer, those files will remain on my external hard drive even after future back ups when those files aren't on my computer?

I am backing up my macbook pro on an external harddrive because I have run out of space on it.  I am wondering if when I do a backup and then delete those files from my computer, during the next backup, those files will still be availavle on the external harddrive or will they be deleted because they are no longer on my computer.  Confusing I know but I'm sure there is a simple answer to it!

  • IE11: Cannot download files or add search providers

I am cleaning a friend's Windows 7 SP1 laptop that got infected with a bunch of Conduit and MySearch toolbars. I cleaned it with MalwareBytes, AdwCleaner and MS Safety Scanner, dumped Norton and got MSE. I then noticed some issues with Internet Explorer
    11:
I can't download files. Clicking a link or right-click and "Save target as..." does nothing. No errors, prompts, toasts or anything. Acts like I did nothing. Images can still be saved.
I can't open the download manager. Neither the menu option nor Ctrl-J do anything at all. Entering "shell:downloads" in the address bar opens the Downloads folder in Explorer, but I can't get to the normal download manager.
I can't add a search provider. Adding through the gallery or using a button on a search engine's homepage results in the message "The search provider could not be installed." It suggests that a required file couldn't be downloaded, the site is
not available, or I'm not connected to the Internet.
Search suggestions don't work, at least for Bing, the only search provider I can get. They also didn't work when I copied in the registry entries from a Win8 machine to add Google manually. I just get "[search provider] Suggestions: An error occurred."
Search providers don't have their icons. I currently have 2 copies of Bing, and both just have a generic magnifying glass icon.
Browsing is very often slow. Every page load stalls for a few extra seconds on "Waiting for [site]...". I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the network in general or with the whole system. Both IE on other computers and Chrome on this computer
    load pages without this delay.
    So far, I have tried:
Started with add-ons disabled and/or run as administrator.
    Cleared personal stuff, reset IE.
Disabled and re-enabled IE in "Turn Windows features on or off".
sfc /scannow says everything is okay. Before running the System Update Readiness Tool it said there were corrupted files it couldn't fix.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth, which found 4 "corrupted" packages that according to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/cbs-mum-package-naming-issue-causing-false/9cd9b2e0-0377-46dc-9d2b-5b9d7fedac4a
are false positives caused by differing number of tildes in their names. Apart from those 4 it gave the system a clean bill of health. System Update Readiness Tool says the same thing.
Uninstalled IE11 through "Uninstall a program", in the Windows Updates section. I now had IE10, which exhibited exactly the same issues. Attempting to reinstall IE11 resulted in an unspecified error.
Uninstalled IE10 the same way, hoping to revert to IE9 or 8 and reinstall from there. I now found myself with no Internet Explorer at all. "Windows cannot find 'iexplore'", remaining shortcuts like the no-addons one were broken, and it was even
missing from "Turn Windows features on or off". Attempting to reinstall IE10 or IE11 failed. I couldn't find a download of IE9.
Used System Restore to bring back IE11. Obviously this returned everything to the broken state it was in before I uninstalled.
Anyone have anything else I can try? (And no, there aren't any restore points from before the toolbars got in.)

  • Firefox 16.0.2 does not actually download files to my computer (Mac running OSX 10.8.2) - not to downloads or any other specificied location.

When I try to download a file, everything at first appears to function properly. I get the option to specfic the download location, for example. It does not matter if I accept the default location (downloads), or if I specify a custom location (for example, my Desktop). Once I initiate the download there is a brief animated sequence showing a file icon going somewhere. Once that's done, however, I find there has been no download accomplished. The file is not in the specfied location, and a searching the computer does not show that it went anywhere else either. I have no difficulties downloading files with Safari. I would prefer to use Firefox.

same issue with same system specs. Google Chrome and Safari download the files just fine. Firefox used to dowmload files fine.

But I'm not the one to tell you how to do it; someone like "Illaass" (Illaass seems to know how to correct / fix almost anything!) will know how if you don't. Just look for the "cat" icon.

The qualifying product is the older version that you owned before you purchased the upgrade to version.  It is what qualifies you to use the less expensive upgrade version.  So you need to select the older version and provide its serial number to prove that you qualify for using the upgrade.

That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Accidentally deleted iTunes, is there anyway I can download it again and have it just back up my iPod instead of clearing it of all data? All of iTunes files are still on my computer, but the actual program got deleted.

I was trying to clear space on my C drive and decided to delete programs that I didn't use or that I didn't recognize. (Bad idea, I know that now.) Anyways, accidentally deleted a program that iTunes needed to run and the computer said it would undo the uninstall and restart to fix the problem but when it restarted iTunes was gone. So my question is, after I download iTunes again, is there a way I can just backup my iPod to it's last sync (which was coincidentally right before I accidentally deleted iTunes) instead it being cleared of all its data? All of iTunes' files are still on my computer except the actual program itself.

    Hi, InsaneCharlie.
Thanks for the question.  I see you have uninstalled iTunes and want this program back.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes if present and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.  If none of your data was modified in the iTunes media folder, then your data should be present upon installation.

  • HT4854 Can I copy the downloaded file to another computer to avoid the 4gigs re-download?

I'm downloading ML and it takes A LOT to download the 4gb install files, can I just copy the downloaded files into my other computer so I can avoid re-downloading it?

When Mountain Lion is fully downloaded it will automatically start. DO NOT click the Install button. Instead Quit the installer. Make a copy and put it in your Downloads folder for safe keeping. Now, see the following:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • My files aren't in the folders anymore, but still on my computer?

I'm getting ready to back up my computer, so I organized everything important to me into folders. The problem is, however, that now the folders within folders are empty. Not all of them, but the majority of them. The files are still on my computer; they didn't get deleted or anything like that. Not invisible, just not there anymore. I just want them organized and ready to go, and I don't want to have to search through my entire computer for all of them again. Is there any way I can fix this?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
are you able to view the photos in full size in the library?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Where on my computer does Firefox put downloaded files?

Where on my computer does Firefox put downloaded files? I need to use them.

    Hello Dan.
This question can have many answers. If you selected, as you downloaded the file, a custom place to place the download, Firefox will have stored the file there (if the download was successfully completed). If you forgot where it was, you can go into Tools > Downloads, rightclick the file you want, and select "Open Containing Folder".
If Firefox did not ask you where to save the file, you go into Tools > Options > General and select the location where Firefox will store your downloads. Here, you can also configure it to ask you every time you choose to save a download. As before, you can go into Tools > Downloads and ask for the containing folder.
If you simply opened the download without asking Firefox to save it, it's possible that you can still access your file (if you did not close Firefox in the meantime). Files are are opened and not stored, are temporarily placed in a cache folder so you can use it while your Firefox session lasts. Simply go into Tools > Downloads, and, as before, ask for the containing folder. From there, you can copy/cut the file and paste it anywhere you want.
