Downloaded files don't appear on desktop

I just started experiencing an odd problem and when I went searching, I found the topic in the archives, unanswered - so I thought I would try again.
For the last few days, everything I download to the desktop - doesn't appear on my desktop. When I search in my downloads folder, I find all of the files, but they don't physically show up unless I relaunch the finder - which is frustrating and annoying.
Does anyone know what causes this? The posts relating to this problem go back quite a way, so it can't be an update issue and I haven't changed any settings or loaded any new software recently.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for clarifying. Are you saying that there's a folder named downloads on your Desktop that you're not seeing getting filled with the downloads or is the Desktop your downloads folder? In any case, you're describing a Finder hangup that's been around for quite awhile, but yours is extremely rare in that only relaunching the Finder gets it to update properly. Create a new admin user account, log into it, set up your browser to download to the Desktop, download some things, and see if the problem persists. Report back.

My downloaded files don't appear in the download window. The download window is blank, yet the files download OK.

Thank you for your prompt help. When I finally got to my profile file, I couldn't find downloads.rdf to delete, but I did find the downloads.sqlite file. Have I misunderstood your help?

  • "Save As" or Downloaded file Icons not appearing on Desktop or FindeFolders

I've had this on-going problem for weeks now. I thought it was isolated to Microsoft Office tools, and now I'm not so sure. (When I would save attachments from MS Office to my Desktop, they would not appear.)
However, this morning I booted my machine brought up Safari and start surfing . Found a PDF I wanted to read, downloaded it, and no ICON. Spotlight says it's there, and I can open it from Spotlight, but the ICON is STILL not on my desktop.
When I've had this problem before, I could log out/log back in and all the Icons magically appear.
    Anyone else having this issue?
This seemed to start having right after I applied the 10.4.10 update. Yes, I've repaired Permissions, etc.

Finder can sometimes be a real sluggard about updating folders, there used to be a nice contextual menu item called Nudge which would force it to update. Unfortunately it no longer works. I tried writing a simple Applescript to force Finder to update but I couldn't get that to work either. It seems especially prone to problems about updating the Desktop, which is one of a number of reasons I tend to not put stuff on the Desktop--I keep a couple of folders on the Desktop for the sorts of files one tends to drop there and put things into those folders instead. Rather than logging out/in you can force the Finder to relaunch, which generally does force an update of the Desktop and folder contents:
    1. Hold down the option key and click on the Finder icon in the Dock
    2. Select Relaunch from the menu
All open windows will be closed by this action, but at least you don't have to quit your programs. Takes about a second or so.

  • Downloaded files don't appear in iTunes

I'm trying to download an MIT Physics course from iTunesU, but only three random lectures will show up after I download them.
The others give me the error "There were problems adding xxx to iTunes." When I go into the "Mymusic" folder there is a "Download" folder there containing folders for each download. Those folders contain a working MP4 file called "download.mp4."
I've found that I can download the files on my iPhone and they show up in iTunes when I sync, but It's so much easier to download them the "normal" way - through iTunes.
If anyone has seen this before or has any ideas how I can fix this, I'd appreciate the help.
    Thanks,
    - Paul

You're sure they are not there? Have you done a
search with the name in iTunes? Or on your disk with
    Spotlight?
I've tried all these things to no avail. Do you have any other suggestions?

  • Files don't appear visually on the desktop

I recently installed Leopard and I've been working with Logic 7.2.
Before upgrading to Leopard When I created new audio files with Logic they usually appeared immediately on the desktop if I assigned them there. With Leopard they do not. They can be seen in the Finder however. They just don't appear on the desktop. I've discovered that if I reboot then the icons show up on the desktop. I hate to have to reboot every time I want to see files that may be on my desktop, especially since I need to have visual confirmation of 20 or 30 files in one session. Is there another way or is this just a Leopard fluke?

This problem shows up with distressing frequency, and I'm not sure why. The preferences for the Desktop, such things as the view options for arrangement, whether to display a preview icon, and so on, are kept in this file:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist"
Other information is kept in .DS_Store file for the Desktop folder itself, thus when a new file is created in the Desktop folder the .DS_Store file is immediately updated with that information. Finder should be seeing this and updating the view of the Desktop that displays on the monitor, but sometimes it can be a sluggard about doing so.
You could try removing both the finder.plist file, and the Desktop's invisible .DS_Store file (you will need to turn on show invisibles to do so, or use the Terminal) and then relaunch the Finder or log out and back in and see if that fixes the problem. It should not be necessary to restart to see your Desktop files: simply opening the actual Desktop folder in your home folder should show the files, even though the Finder isn't updating the monitor display to reflect the state of the actual folder. Sometimes if you open the folder and select a file there the Finder will then update its display of the Desktop on the monitor. Also, when Finder is being unbearably slow about showing things generally you can force it to update by relaunching it: hold down the Option key and click and hold the click on the Finder icon in the Dock, then select Relaunch from the pop up menu. All folders will close and the Desktop will "blink" and then reappear--hopefully its reappearance will display all the latest files that are present in the Desktop folder.

  • Deleted files don't appear in trash

When I drag files to trash they are deleted from the folder, but don't appear in trash.  Is there some setting that has changed so the trash is emptied immediately?

Hi and welcome to  discussions.
You are probably aware that the external drive needs to be connected and showing in order to empty whatever has been deleted from it.
Deleting something via Finder should add crumpled paper to the trash icon.
However deleting from within some applications does not put the deleted file in the Desktop's trash can. iPhoto is an example of this, so using this as an example you would need to 'empty the trash' from within iPhoto or relevant application to get rid of it.

  • Downloaded Files don't write on external disc once completed

    Hi,
Ever since the last two itunes update (v.10.2.2 & 10.2.1) I had some problems with the podcast & apps from saving to an external disc.
I've used the same setup without any problems for over 6 months but for about a month or two I've start to have some problems. Here we go :
When I download podcast and/or Apps, once the download reach 100% and the "Done" message appears, 1 time out off 2 the files doesn't write
to my external Network drive (where my librairy & media files are stored). When it happen, I have to retry the download 1 or 2 times for the files to write correctly on the disk. Sometimes the files write correctly but as I said, almost one time out of two it doesn't!
I'm using a 2TB LaCie 2Big Network 2 configured in mirror mode (1TB mirrored) on witch I've transfered my Library files and Medias Files.
As I said earlier, This setup worked for me flawlessly for over 6 month.
The only thing I can remember that have change recently is the new firmware in my LaCie disk (I've send them the same message about this issue)
and the other thing is the newest version of iTunes.
I don't have any issue writing to the disc in any other situation.
And before someone ask me the question : Yes, The disk is correctly mounted every time before launching iTunes!
Hope someone at Apple or in the community could help me on this one.
Every time I have to re-download a podcast or app, It my Internet bandwith that I use and my Internet provider give me a bandwith limit per month!
    Thanks,
    Martin Brazeau

  • .m4V files don't appear in iTunes until played from iTunes' 'Movies' folder

Some .m4v camcorder movie files (from a recent .avi conversion using Handbrake) just don't appear in my iTunes 'Movies' library until I double-click on them in the iTunes 'Movies' folder. Handbrake did the batch conversion and placed the converted files in the iTunes 'Movies' folder.
All of the converted files are visible in that 'Movies' folder of iTunes. And when I double-click them they play in an iTunes window. iTunes 'Movies' section seems unable to display them until they have first been played from the iTunes 'Movies' folder. Am I missing something about the way iTunes handles .m4v files?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Any idea what the issue might be?
    Thanks.

    Problem.
I just tried turingtest2's suggestion and it didn't work.
I converted an H264 .mov file in Handbrake and output the conversion to the 'Automatically Add to iTunes' folder. But it was not added to iTunes - it ended up in the 'Not Added' folder and remained there until I played it from that location. Then it immediately turned up in iTunes 'Movies' folder.
The Handbrake conversion was to an 'Apple TV' compatible .m4v file.
Any idea what the problem might be?

  • Some flash files don't appear on macintosh

I've installed the latest flash player on a macintosh 10.4.11. But I've noticed that a few flash sites don't appear. Among them the flash player page itself:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
As you can see, where the flash movie should play there's just white space. Both on Safari and Firefox for Mac.
I've also tried in on another mac so it's not just my computer.
I've checked the version on: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about and that flash movie runs fine. It also says: 'You have version 10,0,32,18 installed'
At home on a pc these pages (like http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer) work fine. What kind of thing could make the swf disappear on a mac?

That one works fine on both macs to. It's not just my mac giving trouble. Tested in on another mac too to make sure it's not my computer. The other one has only the basic operating system (os 10.4.11) and the latest flash player and other default stuff. So no fancy additions like on mine. But the same result there:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/  - white space
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about    - no problem
Another site which gives white space is www.morethanline.nl. I can see the preloader, but after that the screen turns white exept for the red ribbon on the top left which says 'vacatures' . Clicking on that doesn't do anything, which I expect is because it changes the main movie in the center. Which is white so even though it would change to the 'vacatures' page, I wouldn't see it.
Is it perhaps the way the swf loads external swf's? Some way that isn't compatible on a mac and works fine on a pc? I don't know how the products/flashplayer swf loads the external movie. Do you happen to know how it is loaded? I can see the play/pauze buttons as you can see from my screendump. Just not the loaded video. Perhaps there's some specific way it is loaded which doesn't work on a mac and gives white space instead?

  • When I download files, a window appears; how do I recall this window?

I may be asking for an enhancement in future releases.
I want to be able to access information about recent downloads and sometimes I like to open the downloaded file by "clicking" on it in this window. It would be nice to be able to open this window from a menu selection (perhaps "View" command).

Whatever you are asking is already provided by firefox. To open the DOWNLOAD window go to Tools -> Download. Most of all get the latest version of [https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/ '''Firefox'''].

  • Files don't appear on my desktop

    So, happens this strange thing:
    when i download a file,
i choose as destination the desktop.
The download finishes, but no file is shown!
I have to go in spotlight, search the name of the file,
choose show it in the finder, and then it appears!
I use firefox, but it's not related to it:
for exemple, if i uncompress a file, same thing,
the file is not shown on the desktop.
    I've already repaired permissions,
it should be an osx problem,
but don't want to reinstall it only for this.
Any other things i could try?
    Thanks

In Firefox, you really must make sure to select a destination. I assume you are using 1.5.0.7 (latest) or even 2.0 RC2 (just posted).
It is possible for downloads to go elsewhere (control + click and select destination) in FF (but Safari will ONLY download to the "download designated folder".
When expanding, some ".dmg" images will go into the trash afterwards unless you change the behavior in Disk Utility of what to do (preferences).
Click on desktop and it doesn't show up even though it is done? Sometimes things are in memory, and the Finder has a general amnesia problem with updating itself with changes. A long standing point of ire.
I would create a folder "Downloads" which seems to help keep things organized and in one place (and do hang onto all the updates and installers).

  • Downloaded files don't open automatically

why most of files, Word, Excel and many other don't open automatically on desktop after downloading them, is very irritating to go and search all the time
    Thanks for help

    Ferro wrote:
... is very irritating to go and search all the time
You don't need to search for them. When you download a file, the Safari Downloads window opens automatically. After the file has finished downloading, double-click on its icon in the Downloads window to open it directly. Also note that you can go to its location by clicking on the magnifying-glass icon to the right. This will open a Finder window with the file selected – handy if you want to delete it or move it to another location.
As Mulder points out, some files (such as MS Office files) will never open automatically, because doing so could be unsafe for your computer. But files that are considered "safe" will open automatically if you have the right option selected in your preferences: Safari > Preferences > General, check the box next to "Open 'safe' files after downloading."

  • DOWNLOAD FILES GO NECESSARILY TO MY DESKTOP  ????

Whenever I download a file either from the internet or e-mails, etc. the files appear automatically in my desktop. Is there a way of prevent them from showing up in my desktop or at least redirect them to another folder?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The preferences of Safari have a place where you can direct downloads to from the Safari menu -> Preferences.
Mail, when you open a message that has an attachment, has beneath the header information but above the body a Save As button, which if depressed lets you direct the location of your downloads.
P.S. Please remember to avoid using all uppercase. Most people who have been on the internet long enough will think you are attempting to be rude and shout your question.
